Translation and Chaos: Poetry Translators' Agency in a Non-Hegemonic Network. A Digital Humanities Approach.

This project examines the role played by chaos in shaping and defining the translation activity in a non-hegemonic context, with a focus on literary translation. Based on English-language U.S. and Canadian contemporary poetry translation into Romanian between 1960 and 2017, it challenges the ‘major’ vs. ‘minor’ dichotomy and moves to show that a transnational framework and a networked understanding of translator agency are much better suited to account for the complexity of a translation sociography. Acknowledging a necessary shift that draws on an economy of attention more than on an economy of production (Cronin 2016), as well as on Michael Cronin’s politics of microspection and on Kobus Marais’ paradigm of complexity (2014), my work takes distance from the Bourdieusian dynamics of power that has prevailed in translation studies since the late 1990s and favors a network approach that accounts for disruption, decentralization, and voids. This dissertation seeks to acknowledge the role played by chance, chaos, and self-regulation in shaping the activity of literary translation through the deployment of a mathematical model that has been at the core of Web 2.0 since its very inception. In doing so, my research sets out to complement Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network-Theory with the mathematical notions of network and network of networks. I endeavor to explore the webs of connectivity as they appear in real-life contemporary poetry translator networks with the purpose of potentially laying the groundwork for a possible redefinition of translation across society and media of circulation. Translation can be conceived, I propose, as an act that is essentially, simultaneously and irreducibly linguistic, cultural, and social, but also individual and collective, material and virtual, online and offline. Under these circumstances, I conclude that a critical re-examination of translation studies in micromodernity through a Digital Humanities lens becomes necessary, if not imperative.

Por fim, o estudo, embasado nos Estudos da Tradução e nos Estudos Culturais, imbui-se de analisar as traduções das respectivas obras, a saber: The Brothers (2002), Ashes of the Amazon (2008b) e Orphans of Eldorado (2009a). Nesse sentido, este trabalho aponta soluções encontradas pelo tradutor de Hatoum no que se refere, sobretudo, à tradução de elementos culturais presentes nestes romances, a fim de demonstrar que Gledson, ao final das traduções – por mais que suas ideias sobre tradução denotem, por vezes, forte apego ao texto fonte e certa sacralização deste – apresenta um novo texto, isto é, uma reescrita. Para tanto, esta pesquisa conta com o embasamento teórico de importantes estudiosos das áreas dos Estudos da Tradução e dos Estudos Culturais, como Denys Cuche (1999), Peter Burke (2003, 2009), Stuart Hall (2011), Susan Bassnett (1998, 2007), André Lefevere (2007) e também do tradutor John Gledson (1994, 2007, 2014). / This study, first of all, presents a discussion based on theory and experience, with the central theme cultural translation discussion. Thus, it points out the affinity between Translation Studies and Cultural Studies, due to the influence they exert on recent studies of cultural translation. The study brings conceptions concerning cultural ranslation, addressing some important and intrinsic to this theme, such as negotiation and cultural mediation aspects. It still exposes some considerations, specifically, on the translation of Brazilian culture, from a brief mention of assumptions and speeches about Brazil culture, culminating in its cultural translation. After that, it presents three works of Brazilian writer Milton Hatoum - Dois irmãos (2006), Cinzas do Norte (2005) and Órfãos do Eldorado (2008a), which were translated by the translator and English literary critic John Gledson. Finally, the study, based on Translation Studies and Cultural Studies, aims to analyze translations of these works, namely: The Brothers (2002), Ashes of the Amazon (2008b) and Orphans of Eldorado (2009a). So, this work points out the solutions found by Hatoum’s translator with regard mainly to the translation of cultural elements present in these novels in order to demonstrate that the translations of Gledson – as much as his ideas about translation sometimes denote deep attachment to the source text and some sacredness of this text – presents a new text, in other words, a rewriting. For that, this research has the theoretical support of important scholars in the areas of Translation Studies and Cultural Studies, such as Denys Cuche (1999), Peter Burke (2003, 2009), Stuart Hall (2011), Susan Bassnett (1998, 2007), André Lefevere (2007) and also the translator John Gledson (1994, 2007, 2014).

Uma das formas pelas quais a prática tradutória atua na cultura a que se destina a tradução é por meio da veiculação de representações culturais de um determinado país e seu povo. Tais representações culturais utilizam estratégias de significação e associações que auxiliam o direcionamento de interpretações a respeito da nação e do povo em questão e a reiteração de estereótipos nacionais, podendo contribuir para a continuidade das relações assimétricas entre determinadas línguas e culturas. O presente trabalho analisa essa situação enfocando como o jornal norte-americano The New York Times constrói em suas notícias representações culturais do Brasil e dos brasileiros e como essas representações são reconstruídas nas traduções das notícias para o português. As representações do Brasil estudadas são a da sensualidade, da violência, da cordialidade, do otimismo, da baixa auto-estima, do exotismo e da corrupção. Pretende-se evidenciar que as traduções dessas notícias, ao trabalharem com representações culturais do Brasil previamente construídas em inglês, por sua vez também elaboram em língua portuguesa representações desse país e dos brasileiros. Neste caso, uma vez que reconstroem e veiculam as representações para o mesmo público interpretado por elas, as traduções reiteram construções correntes no imaginário da sociedade brasileira e podem contribuir, assim, para a reconstrução, a amenização ou até mesmo o reforço dessas representações. / Translation is a linguistic practice influenced by the social, cultural and political orientations of the context in which it occurs. It is also able to affect the culture in which it is produced and consumed. One way in which the practice of translation can have effects on the target culture is through the conveyance of cultural representations of a specific country and its people. Such representations usually employ signifying strategies and associations which both conduct the way in which a given country or people is understood and also reiterate national stereotypes, perpetuating unequal relations between languages and cultures. This dissertation analyses this issue by focusing on how The New York Times constructs cultural representations of Brazil and Brazilians and on how these representations are reconstructed in the news when translated into Portuguese. The representations of Brazil selected for this study are: sensuality, violence, cordiality, optimism, low self-esteem, exoticism and corruption. The research reveals that, in dealing with cultural representations of Brazil which had been previously constructed in English, the translated new items also reiterate these representations in Portuguese. In this case, since the representations produce and convey representations to those who are represented by them, they also serve to perpetuate prevalent images in the Brazilian imagination, and may contribute to reconstruct, soften, or even reinforce such representations.

Exploratory Research into the Use of Web Resources of Students Enrolled in an Introductory University-level Medical Translation Course

abstract: This study explored the Web resources used by four students enrolled in an introductory university-level Medical Translation course over a period of one semester. The research examined the students’ use of time, information needs and searches, and whether user attributes (translation experience and training, specialization and familiarity with the text, previous Web search training, and effort) or task-related factors (perceived task difficulty) had a relationship with the Web searching behavior of the participants. The study also investigates how this behavior might have been reflected in the quality of the product. The study focused on two translation tasks extracted from medical texts selected by the instructor that had to be translated from English into Spanish. Data was gathered by means of various instruments: translated texts, Think-Aloud Protocols, computer screen recordings, and questionnaires. The results of the data gathered from these instruments were triangulated in an effort to find relationships between the translation process and the translation product. Results were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings of the study revealed that the students spent a considerable amount of time looking for information on the Web during their translation assignments, and that the students exhibited an inclination toward bilingual Web sources. An analysis of user attributes suggested that translation experience might have had a relationship with the resources used, and the frequency of their use. Data showed that the more experienced students in the translation program received higher scores in their translations. It was also found that the higher the level of familiarity with the topic, the fewer the number of total searches. In addition, previous Web search training appeared to have a relationship with where and how information was sought. It was observed that in one of the two translation tasks, the more effort the students declared, the more Web searches they carried out. A look at perceived task difficulty indicated that in one of two tasks, this factor had an impact on the number of Web searches, which in turn, seemed to influence the time spent on the translation process, and the translation scores. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Spanish 2015

The rhetorical strategies in the Arabic Commentaries on the Hippocratic Aphorisms : an exploration of metadiscourse in medieval medical Arabic

This thesis offers an analysis of the Arabic Commentaries on the Hippocratic Aphorisms (9th-15th centuries AD) on three levels, (i) translation, (ii) individual styles and (iii) genre. It particularly examines meta-discursive features such as cohesion, subjectivity, hedges, the addressing of readership, and the formulation of truth statements. The analysis of these features reveals rhetorical conventions in the corpus that indicate a discursive unity of the genre of the medieval medical commentary. Yet, this study also shows considerable stylistic variation between the individual commentators which, besides its intrinsic value, is crucial for the identification of these authors’ texts. Moreover, this research examines how the rhetorical features of the later commentaries have developed after the fashion of Ḥunayn Ibn Isḥāq’s 9th-century translation of Galen’s 2nd-century Greek commentary. This study highlights significant differences between Ḥunayn’s rhetorical strategies and those in the later Arabic commentaries. Thus, this work demonstrates discontinuities between Greek and Arabic medical discourses, despite the huge influence of Ḥunayn’s translation. This thesis uses an innovative quantitative methodology combining both close reading and distant reading techniques to study Ḥunayn’s translation technique, and compare Ḥunayn’s style with that of the later commentators. Furthermore, this study advances the understanding of the ways of writing in scientific medieval Arabic. Finally, the separate studies in this thesis contribute knowledge regarding grammatical phenomena such as modals, conjunctions, and conditionals in Classical Arabic.

Texts about the demonstrations that took place in Brazil in June 2013, originally written in Portuguese and in English are analyzed, setting up what Tagnin (2004) considers a bilingual comparable corpus. The theoretical foundation used for the analysis is the Theory of Representation of Social Actors, introduced by van Leeuwen (1997), which is derived from the Systemic Functional Linguistics. The Theory of Representation of Social Actors introduces a sociosemantic inventory to investigate the representation of participants of social practices. To perform the analysis, the social actors who, somehow, have actively participated or supported the social practice known as Manifestations in Brazil are called Manifestantes; and the social actors who, somehow, have helped to contain this movement are called Agentes Públicos. Using the Corpus Linguistics tools, corpus has been annotated in order to identify how these social actors were excluded or included in the analyzed texts. The results indicate that in addition to making use of distinct linguistic elements to refer to the social actors in both languages, the texts analyzed in Portuguese and English seem to emphasize different cuts of the same social practice. This dissimilarity in the way of re-contextualizing the same event or social practice brings up questions about the discursive aspects regarding journalistic texts in the language pair analyzed in this work. From this analysis, it is pointed out how much and in which ways the different manners to re-contextualize the same event can build different meanings in the two linguistic systems. / O presente trabalho se insere em uma área de convergência entre os Estudos da Tradução, a Análise Crítica do Discurso e a Representação de Atores Sociais, haja vista que analisamos o fenômeno da representação de atores sociais em textos jornalísticos em língua portuguesa e língua inglesa. São analisados textos originalmente escritos em português e em inglês sobre as manifestações ocorridas no Brasil em 2013, configurando, assim, o que Tagnin (2004) denomina como corpus comparável bilíngue. Como sustentáculo teórico da análise, utilizamos a Teoria de Representação de Atores Sociais proposta por van Leeuwen (1997), a qual deriva da Linguística Sistêmico- Funcional e propõe um inventário sociossemântico para se investigar a representação dos participantes das práticas sociais. Para realizar a análise, denominamos como Manifestantes os atores sociais que, de alguma forma, participaram ativamente ou deram suporte à prática social conhecida como Manifestações no Brasil, e, como Agentes Públicos, os atores sociais que, de alguma forma, contribuíram para conter o referido movimento. Utilizando-nos de ferramentas da Linguística de Corpus, foram feitas anotações no corpus para identificar de quê maneira esses atores sociais foram excluídos ou incluídos nas representações textuais analisadas neste trabalho. Os resultados indicam que, além de fazerem uso de elementos linguísticos distintos para fazer referência aos atores sociais nas duas línguas, os textos analisados em língua portuguesa e em inglesa parecem enfatizar diferentes recortes da mesma prática social. Essa diferenciação no modo de se recontextualizar o mesmo evento ou prática social levanta questionamentos acerca dos aspectos discursivos subjacentes aos textos jornalísticos no par linguístico analisado neste trabalho. A partir da presente análise, procuramos ressaltar quanto e de que forma as diferentes maneiras de se recontextualizar o mesmo evento podem construir diferentes significados nos dois sistemas linguísticos.

Nesta dissertação, procuramos observar como uma adaptação e duas traduções brasileiras de A Cabana do Pai Tomás abordam questões de identificação e de narrativas raciais ao longo de um período de tempo (cerca de 60 anos) em que o paradigma tradicional do Brasil em relação à raça começa a ser questionado, em grande parte devido ao contato com as noções de raça dominantes na cultura estadunidense. Também observamos como a negociação, caracterizada por ser assimétrica e apropriadora, é aplicada nas reescritas selecionadas, e quais os ganhos e perdas advindos dos diferentes níveis de abertura ao diálogo com o Outro hegemônico na tradução e na adaptação. Para isso, foram selecionadas três reescritas da obra Uncle Tom's Cabin, de Harriet Beecher Stowe, para o português brasileiro. Levando em consideração a própria temática da obra – a escravidão nos EUA –, as questões raciais inevitavelmente entram em pauta no romance e, consequentemente, as reescritas são obrigadas a lidar com os discursos raciais e a representação de identidades raciais específicas, especialmente a identidade negra. Como os discursos raciais tradicionalmente apoiados nos Estados Unidos contrastam fortemente com a narrativa racial tradicional no Brasil, as reescritas acabam por refletir ideologias raciais condizentes com o discurso de sua época, mas que podem contrastar com os discursos umas das outras. Após reflexões sobre a natureza da tradução e da adaptação como reescritas literárias e das formas de identificação na pós-modernidade, em particular as identidades raciais, foram feitas análises comparativas entre trechos do original em inglês e das três reescritas selecionadas, de modo a observar nesses excertos questões pertinentes ao discurso racial veiculado a cada reescrita e à forma como a negociação entre as culturas norte-americana e brasileira se manifestou nas opções tradutórias apresentadas. / Translation and adaptation can either represent tools of resistance for non-hegemonic cultures and identities, or tools for hegemonic identities and cultures to maintain power in a global level. This dissertation aims to observe how a Brazilian adaptation and two Brazilian translations of Uncle Tom’s Cabin deal with matters of racial identity and racial narratives spanning a period (roughly 60 years) in which the traditional Brazilian paradigm about race started to shift, in great part due to contact with concepts of race prevalent in American culture. We observed how negotiation, an approach characterized by its asymmetry and appropriative nature, acts in the selected rewritings, and which gains and losses happen when said rewritings allow varying degrees of contact with a hegemonic Other in translation and literary adaptation. With this goal, three rewritings of Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, to Brazilian Portuguese were chosen. Considering the main theme of the novel – slavery in the United Stated– racial matters inevitably come to the forefront of discussion, and therefore the rewritings have to deal with racial discourses and the representation of specific racial identities, especially black identity. Since the racial discourses traditionally associated with the United States differ significantly from the racial narrative traditional in Brazil, the rewritings can’t help but reflect racial ideologies matching the discourses prevalent at their time; however, those discourses may contrast with the discourse of the remaining rewritings. After reflecting upon the nature of translation and literary adaptation as literary rewritings and upon the formation of identities in post-modern times, racial identities in particular, we compared and analyzed excerpts of the original novel and the three selected rewritings, in order to observe in those passages matters related to the racial discourse associated with each rewriting, and the way negotiation between American and Brazilian cultures made itself known in the translation options presented.

Le débat sur la traduction s’est articulé autour de la notion d’intraduisibilité ou l’impossibilité pratique de la traduction. Ainsi, cette thèse porte sur le transfert des éléments culturels en traduction juridique. L’enjeu étant de démontrer la possibilité pratique de la traduction des données culturelles malgré la distance entre les deux langues-cultures.Ainsi, faut-il souligner que dans le cadre de l’étude actuelle, nous avons abordé la question sous un angle proprement civilisationnel porté essentiellement sur les aspects culturels que recouvre le Code algérien de la famille.et que nous nous sommes limité aux cultures algérienne et française.Au coeur de cette problématique, nous avons mis au centre de notre réflexion la notion d’équivalence qui constitue l’essence même de toute opération de traduction. Avec les années, la question de l’équivalence ne se pose plus en termes de convergences ou divergences au niveau des structures d’une langue, mais elle est orientée davantage aujourd’hui vers l’aspect sociologique du phénomène traductif mettant en jeu des éléments extralinguistiques tout aussiimportants lors du transfert d’une langue à une autre. / The debate over the translation was structured around the notion of untranslatability or practical impossibility of translation. This thesis relates to the transfer of cultural elements in legal translation. The aim was to show the practical possibility of translation despite the cultural distance between two languages and cultures. Should it be stressed that within the framework of the current study, we tackled the question under an angle properly civilisationnel carried primarily about the cultural aspects which the Algerian family Code recovers, we limited ourselves to the cultures Algerian and French. This thesis focuses on the concept of equivalence which constitutes a central concept in any operation of translation.

Orientador: Diva Cardoso de Camargo / Banca: Antônio Manoel dos Santos Silva / Banca: Antônio Paulo Berber Sardinha / Resumo: A presente pesquisa buscou examinar a obra An Invincible Memory, que contém acentuada quantidade de marcadores culturais de determinada realidade extralingüística, com o objetivo de analisar as escolhas do autotradutor, João Ubaldo Ribeiro, ao transpor e transformar esses marcadores para o contexto da cultura de chegada, bem como identificar possíveis aspectos de normalização. Para a análise de marcadores culturais, a pesquisa apóiase na abordagem interdisciplinar proposta por Camargo (2004, 2005) envolvendo os estudos de tradução baseados em corpus de Baker (1993, 1995, 1996, 2004), os estudos de lingüística de corpus de Berber Sardinha (2000, 2004), mais a inserção dos trabalhos sobre domínios culturais de Nida (1945) e de Aubert (1981), sobre modalidades tradutórias de Aubert (1984,1998), e sobre traços de normalização de Baker (1996) e de Scott (1998). Os resultados obtidos revelam que a maioria dos marcadores culturais podem ser classificados dentro do domínio da cultura material, com 43%, seguido pelo domínio da cultura social, com 29%, pelo domínio da cultura ideológica, com 15%, e pelo domínio da cultura ecológica, com 13%, o que espelha o contexto da obra. Também foi possível observar traços de normalização que indicam o uso de estratégias, de modo consciente ou inconsciente, por parte do tradutor, para conferir fluência ao texto traduzido e facilitar a leitura para o público de língua inglesa. / Abstract:The present study aimed at investigating the work An Invincible Memory, which contains a great amount of cultural markers, in order to analyse the choices of the selftranslator, João Ubaldo Ribeiro, who transfers and transforms these cultural markers to the context of the translated text. This study also intends to identify possible normalization features. Our investigation is based on Camargo's interdisciplinary proposal (2004, 2005), which involves Baker's corpus-based translation studies (1993, 1995, 1996, 2004), and Berber Sardinha's corpus linguistics studies. Our work also includes Nida's (1945) and Aubert's (1981) works on cultural domains, Aubert's proposal (1984, 1998) for translation modalities, and Baker's (1996) and Scott's (1998) works on normalization features. The obtained results showed that great part of cultural markers can be classified as the material cultural domain, with 43%, followed by the social cultural domain, with 29%, the ideological cultural domain, with 15%, the ecological cultural domain, with 13%. The cultural domains point out the context of the source text. It was also possible to observe that normalization features tend to reveal, conscious or unconscious, the use of fluency strategies by the selftranslator, trying to make the translated text easier to read. / Mestre

Dra. Diva Cardoso de Camargo. O presente trabalho tem como um dos objetivos observar o comportamento de tradutores diferentes em face de fragmentos (re)aproveitados e semelhantes extraídos de duas obras de Clarice Lispector A Descoberta do Mundo, traduzida por Giovanni Pontiero como Discovering the World e Uma Aprendizagem ou o Livro dos Prazeres, traduzida por Richard A. Mazzara e Lorri A. Parris como An Apprenticeship or The Book of Delights. Outro objetivo é identificar aspectos de normalização encontrados nas respectivas traduções desses fragmentos. A metodologia situa-se no campo dos estudos da tradução baseados em corpus (proposta de Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, no prelo; estudos sobre normalização de Scott, 1998; e pesquisas e projeto de Camargo 2003a, 2003b, 2004), e no da lingüística de corpus (estudos de Berber Sardinha, 2003, 2004); também se apóia na fortuna crítica da Autora (trabalhos de Gotlib, 1993; Nunes, B., 1995; Ruggero 2000; Sá, O., 2000; Varin 2002; e Cherem 2003). A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de uma combinação de análises semi-manuais e de análises computadorizadas. Inicialmente, baseamo-nos na fortuna crítica de Lispector, para levantar cinco vocábulos considerados preferenciais da Autora: "vida", "morte", "amor", "silêncio" e "olhos". A seguir, utilizamos o programa WordSmith Tools para verificar se esses cinco vocábulos preferenciais eram recorrentes e significativos sob a perspectiva da lingüística de corpus. Com base em Scott (1998), examinamos a tradução dos cinco vocábulos em relação a nove características de normalização. Os resultados finais encontrados nesta pesquisa mostram que, em comparação com o tradutor individual Giovanni Pontiero, a equipe dos dois tradutores, Mazzara e Parris... Initially, we used Lispector's critical heritage in order to select five words which are considered to be preferred and recurring in Lispector's writing: "life", "death", "love", "silence" and "eyes".
