The Serpent and Ophicleide as Instruments of Romantic Color in Selected Works by Mendelssohn, Berlioz and Wagner

Morgan, Richard Sanborn 12 1900 (has links)
Traditional scholarship has stated that the serpent and ophicleide (as well as their successor, the tuba) were developed and added to the standard orchestra to add a bass voice to the brass, allowing a tonal compass to match a similar downward expansion in the strings and woodwinds. A closer reading of the earliest scores calling for these instruments reveals a more coloristic purpose, related to timbre as much as to compass. Indeed, the fact that composers rarely wrote for serpent and ophicleide makes two points: it proves them to be inadequate choices as a brass bass, and when they were called for, they had an expressive, often descriptive purpose. Despite his conservative musical education supervised by Carl Friedrich Zelter, the seventeen-year-old Mendelssohn, under the influence of A. B. Marx, used the Corno inglese di basso, an upright version of the serpent, in his Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream to give a more rustic flavor to Bottom's ass-braying. Even when the English bass horn functioned as a bass voice, it was playing in contexts that were descriptive, where it often demonstrated its musical inadequacy. Berlioz's descriptive writing for the serpent and ophicleide are well known. A remarkable feature which Symphonie fantastique shares with works by the other composers is the confidence Berlioz showed in the ophicleide's functional independence by occasionally giving it an arpeggiated figure while the rest of the orchestra sustains the chord. Wagner's writing for the serpent and ophicleide in Rienzi follows the less imaginative conventions of French grand opera. In Der fliegende Holländer the ophicleide, while not used as descriptively as Mendelssohn and Berlioz, nevertheless contributes significantly to Wagner's emerging focus on the inner lives of his characters and expressive commentary on the stage action. Tubists should consider the expressive implications and the unique timbre of these instruments when performing works originally written for the forerunners of the tuba.

Die Legende von der unsichtbaren Stadt Kitesch von Nikolai Rimskij-Korsakov und Parsifal von Richard Wagner

Gosenpud, Abram Akimowitsch January 1998 (has links)

Between hope and despair : A sermon analysis after the terrorist attack at Drottninggatan in 2017

Brorsson, Caroline January 2023 (has links)
A sermon after a crisis or traumatic event requires great pastoral care. How do we put what happened into words? When things are so devastating that words are not enough? How do we speak about hope and despair in the midst of a crisis? This thesis aims to analyze sermons in the Church of Sweden after the attack on Drottninggatan, Stockholm, Sweden in 2017. Nine sermons held in the weeks following the attack have been analyzed. The theoretical background and theme of the analysis has been psychotraumatology and trauma-informed theology. The thesis’ process has been an inductive approach, as it begins in the material and then compares these against the selected aspects. The questions asked in the thesis are: “What qualities can be found in these sermons after the terrorist attack at Drottninggatan?“ As well as two sub-questions about the respective perspectives: “Which psychotraumatological perspectives were found in the sermons?” and “What perspectives of trauma-informed theology were found in the sermons?” The analysis of sermons and the answer to the first question resulted in five common themes: Responsibility and humanity, The terrorist attack and evil, The Bible and God, Despair and Hope. Based on this, both theoretical aspects have been used to analyze the results.

Tassin, Alan 30 November 2010 (has links) (PDF)

A Match Made in Heaven or Hell: Historians Debate the Influence of Richard Wagner on Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich.

Shockley, Steven W. 01 December 2001 (has links)
This is an analysis of the contributions of Richard Wagner's ideas to the development of Adolf Hitler as seen by various historians. This author has consulted the works of many different authors to attempt to find the ideological roots of Adolf Hitler. The ideology of Richard Wagner, as seen by some of the most pre-eminent historians of this period, has been applied to the ideas of Hitler to find any continuity between these two men. All historians consulted thought Wagner was, for some more, others, less, a contributor to the development of Adolf Hitler and National Socialism. This author has concluded that Wagner was a contributor, but that Hitler's personal environment was more important to the development of National Socialism. This thesis explores an area into which no one has really delved in depth. Hopefully, this thesis can be a springboard for further research into this area.

Geotecnologias no mapeamento de pequenas propriedades rurais

Zamparetti, Adilson de Freitas 23 October 2012 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro Tecnológico / Made available in DSpace on 2012-10-23T22:02:20Z (GMT). / The main objective of this work is to analyze the thematic mapping of two small farms, as well as their fitness related to the land use and environmental legislation suitability using geotechnologies, in Alfredo Wagner municipality in the #Alto Vale do Itajaí# region, in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. Besides, specific objectives include to evaluate the generated digital orthophotos, the accuracy of the control points and farms corners coordinates, looking at the land use and land suitability thematic mapping, which was compared to the environmental legislation recommendations (APP # permanent preservation areas and legal reserves). Alfredo Wagner is located in #Serra Geral#, in the upper part of Itajaí River Watershed, in the transitional area between the coast and Santa Catarina plateau. It was used the following materials: i) aerial photographs (photographic paper and film) from the 1977-1979 survey period, made by Aerofoto Cruzeiro SA company, in 1:25 000 nominal scale; ii) graphic scanner (table scanner) and photogrametric scanner; iii) topographic GPS (Leica GS 20 and ProMark X) and navigation GPS (eTrex model); and iv) digital elevation models (SRTM and IBGE). The data cartographic base refers to a 1:50 000 scale, in digital format and the GIS program used was ILWIS v3.2 Academic (ITC, The Netherlands, 2004), which was fully appropriated to achieve the research objectives. The aerial photographs were generated by the use of eight different combinations, from two kinds of metric aerial photographs (paper and film), two types of GPS receptors (navigation and topographic) and two digital elevation models sources (SRTM and IBGE). The combinations were tested and evaluated by means of visual and numeric ways, considering the internal and external orientation, and the root mean square error. The research shows the feasibility of the orthophotos and navigation GPS use to support the thematic mapping in small farms. The thematic mapping can help rural extensionists to make planning, to orient the farmers in relation to the farms suitability to the environmental legislation and in the production of agricultural projects.
