[en] ENGLISH TEACHING COURSE BOOKS IN A SOCIODISCURSIVE PERSPECTIVE: CULTURES, IDENTITIES AND POST MODERNITY / [pt] O LIVRO DIDÁTICO DE INGLÊS EM UMA ABORDAGEM SÓCIO-DISCURSIVA: CULTURAS, IDENTIDADES E PÓS-MODERNIDADEROGÉRIO TILIO 16 August 2006 (has links)
oportunidades de voz aos alunos;
aprendizagem
e uma abordagem
crítica de discurso e de cultura. A partir de uma visão
não-essencialista das
identidades e considerando a sociedade inserida na pós-
modernidade, este
trabalho analisa doze livros de ensino de inglês, de
seis
interpessoal); e a
organização estrutural do material (metafunção textual)
doze livros,
americanizada e europeizada, sendo o status e a
visibilidade determinantes de sucesso, tal como na
sociedade pós-moderna. A organização dos livros
didáticos,
muitas vezes tematizando o componente gramatical, mostra
no mundo.
[en] The purpose of this research is to investigate the
discourse of English as
foreign language coursebooks and its relation to students´
construction of social
identities. In order to observe socio-discursively how
these books represent the
world and the cultural contexts related to the English
language; to investigate the
extent to which they offer voice opportunities to
students; and to identify the
beliefs they reflect concerning the teaching and learning
of English, this thesis
adopts a systemic-functional approach to language, a socio-
interactionist view of
teaching and learning and a critical perspective of
discourse and culture. Adopting
a non-essentialist view of social identities and
considering the insertion of society
in post modernity, this research analyzes twelve English
coursebooks, from six
different series, at beginner and intermediate levels.
Books were selected
according to variation parameters involving communicative
objectives, target
audience, both place and date of publication, and consumer
market. Topics and
cultural contexts were investigated to identify the world
view expressed in each
book (ideational metafunction); exercises and activities
were both related to the
social roles imagined for projected book users and to
students´ voice opportunities
(interpersonal metafunction); finally, the structural
organization of the materials
(textual metafunction) was studied to identify authors´
beliefs concerning the
teaching and learning of English as a foreign language.
The analysis showed that
the choice of topics and cultural contexts provides a
world view that may lead
students to adopt certain identities which are presented
as the right ones, socially
acceptable and legitimated in several books. Results also
indicate, in eight out of
the twelve books analyzed, the representation of an
American and European world
view, where status and visibility are crucial to success,
in accordance with post
modern society. The organization of the materials, which
generally thematize
grammar, shows that most authors understand the teaching
and learning process as a set of formal rules to be
apprehended and reproduced, rather than a way of
acting in the world. The analysis of the exercises and
activities showed that there
is little space for learners´ cultures and few
opportunities for them to show their
voice and perform their identities freely. Results of this
research point to the
importance of discussing these issues and making students,
teachers and
researchers who deal with coursebooks aware of the social
and discursive force
inherent to the materials, which can interfere with the
construction of identities,
worlds and beliefs.

[en] THE INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD AS A MULTIMODAL-MEDIATING TOOL IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE / [pt] O QUADRO BRANCO INTERATIVO COMO FERRAMENTA MULTIMODAL NO ENSINO DE INGLÊS COMO LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRAFELLIPE FERNANDES CAVALLERO DA SILVA 19 October 2012 (has links)
[en] This research consists of an investigation on the multimodal aspects of the Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) as a mediating tool in the teaching of English as a foreign language (TEFL). Initially, the theoretical background offered by Activity Theory was used with a view to contextualizing the technological artifact in question in the field of teaching activities, from the process of elaborating a lesson to the moment of executing it. The concepts of mediation, teaching activity, set of genres and genre systems constitute the basis for systematizing and contextualizing, whether individually or collectively, the array of actions and operations referring to the classroom environment where the IWB is present. Since the study was delimited to the matter of teaching, an online questionnaire was developed in order to check the perspectives of a group of teachers from a renowned private institution, with excellence in the TEFL through the use of state-of-the-art technologies, which also include the IWB. The main purpose of this questionnaire was to obtain a better understanding of the teaching activities mediated by the IWB, by searching for facilitators or delimiters throughout the process, besides comparing these results with more traditional tools, such as blackboards, whiteboards, transparencies and slides/presentations. The results favor the use of the IWB due to its multiplicity and availability of resources; nevertheless, it is argued that it should not be the main focus in any of the teaching activities mentioned above.

[en] IMAGES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING: A STUDY OF CLASSROOMS FROM A MULTIMODAL PERSPECTIVE / [pt] AS IMAGENS NO ENSINO DE LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRA: UM ESTUDO DE SALA DE AULA POR UMA PERSPECTIVA MULTIMODALGISELE GAMA DA SILVA 16 March 2011 (has links)
A perspectiva
[en] Multimodal texts have a strong presence in contemporary society, in
the mass media and on Internet, for instance. The use of multiple
modalities in the language classroom is common, as can be seen in films,
songs, images, and many other resources. The purpose of this study is to
observe teaching practices with multimodal texts in English language
classrooms in order to gain a view of the role of verbal and visual texts in
this kind of setting. The focus is on (1) the perception that the teachers
have of their choices about what material to use, and (2) their vision of its
use multimodal text in relation to teaching resources in general. The
theoretical perspective of the study is based on the theory of the grammar
of visual design as modeled by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996, 2001). The
pedagogical perspective of the study is guided by the work of Unsworth
(2001) and Royce (2002), authors that argue for teaching based on a
multimodal approach. The study discusses: (1) the use of images in
pedadogical material and teacher’s visions of its use, and (2) the notion of
making learners and teachers to be able to read multimodal texts, so as to
gain multimodal communicative competence.

pessoal coerente. / [en] The implementation of an enterprise culture model in EFL
schools has an
impact on the (re)construction of teachers identities
and, therefore, on their feelings
of affiliation to those institutions. On the basis of such
concepts as identity,
psychological contract and commodification and on
interviews with teachers from
two different institutions, we have tried to investigate
how this change has been
affecting the feeling of biographical continuity of
teachers as individuals,
professionals and members of those organizations. The
results suggest that the
implementation of an enterprise culture model has aroused
conflicts of representation
on teaching practice, on the teacher s role and on the
image of the institution, leading
to changes in the degree of the teachers sense of
belonging to the organization and in
the process of the construction of a coherent personal
narrative.

[en] THE PRESENCE OF PORTUGUESE IN THE WRITTEN PRODUCTION OF THE ENGLISH LEARNER: A STUDY ON WORD USAGE / [pt] A PRESENÇA DO PORTUGUÊS NA ESCRITA DO APRENDIZ DE INGLÊS: UM ESTUDO SOBRE O EMPREGO LEXICALKELLY CRISTINA GONCALVES BARROS 31 July 2006 (has links)
do vocabulário. O
objetivo geral da pesquisa é investigar a interferência do
português no
diferentes, no caso deste estudo,
[en] This study aims at the written production of students of
English as a foreign
language in Brazil. Compositions of intermediate and
advanced students are
analyzed with a special focus on constructions whose
inadequacies may be
specifically associated to vocabulary usage. The general
goal of the research is to
investigate the interference of Portuguese in the
acquisition of English as a foreign
language, with a special emphasis on lexical usage in the
written modality. Its
specific objective is to test the hypothesis that the non
isomorphic character of
sense relations between different languages − in the case
of this study, Portuguese
and English − is related to the incidence of lexical
problems encountered in
compositions of students of English as a foreign language.
The results of the
analysis, which was mainly grounded on the propositions of
Cruse (1986), Lyons
(1990) and Saeed (2003), contribute to confirm this
hypothesis, demonstrating
that the lexical problems being scrutinized can be
associated with mother tongue
interference, and, more specifically, with the
discrepancies in the sense relations
between Portuguese and English.

Posteriormente, esses
aspectos do livro
estrangeira. A análise do
alunos aprovam esses
aspectos e corroborou com a sua escolha. / [en] This study consists of an investigation of the aspects of
an English textbook
which the students like and consider motivating. The
course book chosen is an
English series especially developed for Brazilian tweens
and teenagers who study
at a private English institute. The students using the
material were heard and they
pointed out three aspects which they considered positive
and approved of: the
texts the material makes use of, its layout and its
approach to the teaching of
grammar. Resorting to relevant theories, i.e., the genre
theory, the multimodality
theory and theories related to the teaching of a foreign
language, the material was
thoroughly analysed. The insights brought about by this
analysis helped us
understand the reasons why the students approved of these
aspects and
corroborate their choice.

[en] IMPLEMENTING A PROJECT OF ENGLISH TEACHING IN MUNICIPAL SCHOOL OF RIO DE JANEIRO: VOICES AND DISCOURSES IN COUNTERPOINT / [pt] IMPLEMENTAÇÃO DE UM PROJETO DE ENSINO DE INGLÊS EM ESCOLAS DA REDE MUNICIPAL DO RIO DE JANEIRO: VOZES E DISCURSOS EM CONTRAPONTOWENDELL DOS SANTOS 18 October 2010 (has links)
As
As vozes
privado. / [en] This study focuses on the implementation of an English course in public schools
in Rio de Janeiro municipality by means of an agreement between Rio de Janeiro City
Hall and a language school. The study aims to analyze different views the private and the
public sectors may hold in relation to this project. The theoretical framework is based on
three discourse approaches: the socio-discursive, the interactional and the ideological.
The data are analysed according to the Bakhtinian dialogism, the polifony in Ducrot, the
notion of footing in Goffman, and the Foucaultian discourse perspective. The corpus of
this qualitative-interpretative research includes the Documents of the Contract, individual
and focal group interviews with both students and the representatives of the language
school. The analysis of the data reveals voices in dissonance. The voice form the private
institution appraises the project positively. It advocates the social responsibility issue
towards the unprivileged children and the communicative approach for foreign language
teaching. Voices from the public sector, however, hesitate between the constraints faced
during the project implementation and the responsibilities of the participants involved in
the project. In addition, voices from the private and the public sectors seem to dissonate
especially in relation to the unprivileged children and the selection criteria to include
them in the course. The relevance of this work lies on the possibility to raise issues and
foster further discussion upon English language teaching within a municipal public school
context, which is seen here as a hybrid locus of voices and discourses between the public
and the private sectors.

[en] This research focuses on the reflexive process I undertook about my English classes in a Public High School, in Rio de Janeiro. The study aims at showing my own and my students understandings about the lack of motivation during my classes, in the second semester of 2009, and about the changes that began in 2009
and that continued through the first and second semesters of 2010. This is a qualitative and interpretative research, whose theoretical and methodological framework is based on the principles of Exploratory Practice and on the concepts associated with the Narrativization of Experience. The diaries were written in two
different moments: the first one in the second semester of 2009 and the second one, during 2010. In both phases, reflexive writing is understood as action for understanding. The teacher s diary and the student s compositions, which are considered as instruments of reflexive research, were analyzed through
evidentiality, modality in discourse, and construction of self. The analysis focuses on the construction of emotional, reflexive and agentive self as projected through a reportive epistemological stance. The study indicates not only a review and a ressignification of the teacher s as well as the students belief systems, both becoming more interesting and productive. Articulating evidentiality with positioning in narratives of experience was extremely significant for this dissertation as well as for the teacher in her practice.

[en] This study aims at investigating the construction of the identities of an English teacher, through the manifestations of her beliefs on talks about textbooks and instructional materials. The research is based upon socioconstructionist identity theories which conceive identity construction as a fluid, multiple and fragmented phenomenon, which is generated in discourse; situated in the context and in the course of the interactions; and built in terms of similarity and difference (DUSZAK, 2002; MOITA LOPES, 2002, 2003; BAUMAN, 2005; BUCHOLTZ; HALL, 2005; HALL, 2005). The theoretical framework is also built on the sociosemiotic approach of language proposed by the Systemic-Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1989, 1994) and follows a qualitative methodology of research (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2000). The work was carried out upon a case study with an English teacher during meetings held to discuss the new materials proposed for the new childrens course at a language school in Rio de Janeiro, where I was the academic coordinator in charge of the segment then. The data were analyzed under the light of the Systemic-Functional Linguistics, mainly with the analytical tools of the Appraisal Theory (MARTIN, 2000; MARTIN; WHITE, 2005; VIAN JR., 2009), and they indicate that affection, judgment and appreciation permeate the beliefs which contribute to the teachers identity processes. During these talks, this participant (co)constructed and (re)constructed her identities, reflecting how she sees herself professionally and how she engages with the other participants in the meetings, as well as with the other teachers in the institution and with the students.

[pt] A VALORIZAÇÃO DO TRABALHO DOCENTE EM AMBIENTES DE ENSINO-APRENDIZAGEM DE LÍNGUA INGLESA: UMA PERSPECTIVA DISCURSIVA / [en] TEACHERS PROFESSIONAL APPRECIATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING-LEARNING CONTEXTS: A DISCURSIVE PERSPECTIVEBRENO COSTA RIBEIRO 28 December 2020 (has links)
[en] Teachers professional appreciation is of the utmost importance for their professional development. It can be achieved in a plethora of ways. The present dissertation focuses on trying to understand in which ways such valorization is perceived by three professionals of the area of English language teaching-learning in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Through individual and autobiographical interviews, each of the teachers discusses their professional journey and what motivates them to either consider leaving their profession or continue working as teachers, as they attempt to comprehend what professional appreciation is in their area of expertise. The research is qualitative and interpretative attempting to understand what motivates the interviewees. Even coming from different backgrounds (public schools, English courses and private schools), the three of them share similar visions in relation to freedom of agency, salary and identities imposed by the mercantilist agenda brought about by neoliberalism to schools. Regardless of having theoretical background knowledge about the theme, all of them echo theories about professional appreciation, also related to Applied Linguistics of the professions.
