[en] THE TASK OF THE HISTORIAN IN THE DAWN OF HISTORICISM / [pt] A TAREFA DO HISTORIADOR NO ALVORECER DO HISTORICISMO

GESSICA GOES GUIMARAES 03 March 2008 (has links)
[en] The standing work analyzes the building of the concept historicism in the Germany - in the border of the XVIIIth century - from its relation with the Enligthenment and its constitution as a new Weltanschauung and a new historiographical practice, above all at the works of Herder, Humboldt and Ranke. This study has comprised three central characteristics of historicism: firstly, the tension between the universal and the singular; secondly, the conflict between the idea of progress and the conception of history as a process of maturity; and, finally , its close relation with the lutheranism and, specially, with the pietist religiousity

[en] THE HUMAN NATURE ACCORDING TO THOMAS HOBBES: ATTEMPT OF INTERPRETATION ACCORDING TO THE POLITICAL-RELIGIOUS CONFLICTS OF SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ENGLAND AND EUROPE / [pt] A NATUREZA HUMANA SEGUNDO THOMAS HOBBES: UMA TENTATIVA DE INTERPRETAÇÃO A PARTIR DOS CONFLITOS POLÍTICO-RELIGIOSOS DA INGLATERRA E DA EUROPA DO SÉCULO XVII

LEONARDO DELARUE DE SOUZA LOURENÇO 16 July 2012 (has links)
[en] Hobbes seems to be one of the most controversial autors in Modern Political Theory. He developed a model of human nature which introduced in filosofical discussion a mecanicist physics that he created in the seventeeth century and also, at the same time, a concept of desire or conatus which he inherited from the Renaissance. Joining these two concept on his concept of liberty, he produced a filosofical system in which there is a progression from body – man – state (political body). This dissertation is intended to situate, within the discussion of human nature in Hobbes’ philosophical works, the political and religious conflict in which he took part and also the ones that he provocated, always having in mind the british revolutionary context (specially, the Puritan Revolution of 1640) and the seventeenth century Europe, in search for an interpretation that combines the doutrinary and historical views of his works. Through the study of traditional british historians and new interpreters of Hobbes’ works, this research tries to ease the negative vision of Hobbes, situating him not as a conservative supporter of absolutism, but as a moderate modern/iluminst, in search for a point of equilibrium for his new philosophy e for means to solve the problems of the complicated british political context. Both can only be found through acceptance of his point of view about human nature.

[en] FROM ENLIGHTENMENT TO SEMANTIC WEB: REFLECTIONS ABOUT COMMUNICATION BASED ON A SINGLE LANGUAGE / [pt] DO ILUMINISMO À WEB SEMÂNTICA: REFLEXÕES SOBRE A COMUNICAÇÃO COM BASE EM UMA ÚNICA LÍNGUA

FLAVIA DI LUCCIO 06 May 2010 (has links)
[en] Since the beginning of times there have been discussions about linguistic diversity and the communication among men. One can easily say that Plato (427 - 347 b.c) and Aristotle (384 - 322 b.c) led both linguists and philosophers to constantly search for explanations concerning the origins and common characteristics of the many languages that exist in the world. It seems that the obsession to find the one language from which all others are supposed to derive still persists, as does the desire to return to it. This is the reason why philosophers and linguists fundamentally support the development and use of a single language. Such a language would make possible the communication among men on a universal level, irrespective of their birth place, culture or mother tongue. In other words, a free and democratic communication could take place and there would also be free access to knowledge. One of the Enlightenment`s ambitions could therefore be achieved: men would be able to perceive reality autonomously. Taking those issues as a starting point, a historical study was developed to investigate the search for a single language, from the Enlightenment until contemporary times, particularly after the advent of Internet. For this purpose, this study begins with Kant`s conception of Enlightenment, followed by the ideas of two of his contemporaries, Condorcet and Condillac, who suggested the use of a universal language as a means for man to reach Enlightenment. The study discusses universal language projects of the 19th and early 20th centuries and points out the reasons for their failures. It proceeds with a presentation of the attempt to make English the worldwide language of communication from the second half of the 20th century until the Digital Revolution. It argues that, at this stage, what matters is no longer the development of a single language, but of a free way of communicating, regardless of the language spoken and with unlimited access to knowledge. This is more clearly seen with the onset of the third generation of the Internet, known as the Semantic Web, which is recuperating the ideals of the Enlightenment and has been proving to be a possible way for communication on a universal level and for man`s Enlightenment.

[en] LITERATURE AND POPULAR CULTURE ON THE EARLY CHRISTIANITY: THE BELIEF AND PRACTICE OF THE EVIL EYE IN GALATIANS 3,1-5 / [pt] LITERATURA E CULTURA POPULAR NO CRISTIANISMO PRIMITIVO: A CRENÇA E PRÁTICA DO MAU-OLHADO EM GÁLATAS 3,1-5

DANIEL BRASIL JUSTI 24 August 2011 (has links)
[en] Literature and popular culture on the early christianity are presented as subjects and aims to examine, from literature, culture and magical practices in the ancient world, the participation of Christian communities in this vital environment, in general, and the community of Galatians, in particular. The goal is, through transdisciplinarity (theology, history, anthropology and archaeology) to reconstruct the original magical context in Galatian’s community, understand the tensions among them and realize that there are many implications in this community link with the environment of magic. The magical element observed is the belief and practice of the evil eye (baskaíno) that, because of some historical processes, such as the European Enlightenment, was obscured in modern Bible translations and exegetical commentaries. Unveiling, therefore, this filter in built by modernity, is to resize the fragile boundaries between magic (primitive) and religion (civilized), according to the racionalist reading of the nineteenth century onwards.

[en] FROM CRITIC OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT TO SELF-CRITIC: JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU AND THE ACT OF FOUNDATION OF A VIRTUOUS MORAL / [pt] DE CRÍTICO DO ILUMINISMO A AUTOCRÍTICO: JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU E O ATO DE FUNDAÇÃO DE UMA MORAL VIRTUOSA

RENATA BARRETO DE FREITAS 07 December 2006 (has links)
[en] This research aims at Jean-Jacques Rousseau and has the objective of calling attention to the way he peculiarly constructs his critique of Enlightenment from the idea that it is constituted as a historical movement whose notion of progress and improvement of the sciences, the letters and the arts enhanced even more the process of corruption initiated with man´s insertion in history. It is exactly in the first Discourse, in the Letter to D Alembert and in the Confessions that Rousseau - making use of a critical philosophy which differs from the erudite subtlety of the philosophes - explicitaly breaks with the french members of 18th century about the worst they have - the faculty of amour-propre. Although this attribute is indispensable to the life in society, the genevan objects to the exaggerated and disfigured character that it takes on among the encyclopedists, to the point of turning into the vice of hypocrisy. His preocupation in demonstrating against this vice leads to the understanding that, besides being a historically situated problem, it is also a vice against which the virtue of sincerity, innate in the human nature, is opposed to. That is why Rousseau considers himself, besides a critic of the Enlightenment, a self- critic in relation to also being, in contradiction with his inclinations, a philosophe. It is through a confessional exercise that he places in evidence an ethic of sincerity capable of revealing the natural man who is hidden behind the mask of hypocrisy. The context of the Enlightenment, as a convention and an artifice, is incapable of revealing the original identity of each human being. That is why the genevan presents himself as the responsible for idealizing the moral context that will supply it. And the idea of morality becomes expressive to the understanding of his dispute with the enlightened party. Therefore, this research also investigates how Rousseau founds in these three texts a new man and a new society from a remarkable moral guided by the dictates of a sincerely virtuous conscience.

RENATA LOPES MARINHO DE ALMEIDA 11 June 2019 (has links)
[en] The present master research intends to investigate different discursive aspects about the feminine representations in the French society of century XVIII. In the first chapter, based on the entries found in the Encyclopedie, we observe the construction of the female figure and the interpretations regarding the capacities of women in that period. In the second, we study the contrary perceptions of the philosophers Rousseau and Condorcet in relation to women s abilities based on their treatises on education. And finally, our third chapter, presents the trajectory of Madame du Châtelet and, from her posthumous work On happiness published in 1779, we proposed to examine education as a proposal of happiness.

[en] A HISTORY OF THE SPIRIT: CONSIDERATIONS ON LE SIÈCLE DE LOUIS XIV AND VOLTAIRE’S HISTORICAL THOUGHT / [pt] UMA HISTÓRIA DO ESPÍRITO: CONSIDERAÇÕES SOBRE O SÉCULO DE LUÍS XIV E O PENSAMENTO HISTÓRICO DE VOLTAIRE

CAIO MORAES FERREIRA 01 November 2013 (has links)
[en] This essay proposes a critical analysis of Le Siècle de Louis XIV, a work that occupies an important role in the consolidation of modern historiography and that remains only marginally discussed in the debates concerning the theme made in Brazil. Having been written by Voltaire between 1732 and 1751, Le Siècle de Louis XIV discusses (and contains) some of the main issues present in the historical thought of French Enlightenment, whether related to the autonomization of historiography as an analytical science or to the expansion of French literary culture (and the public interested towards history) during the XVIIIth century. We aim to present the ways in which Voltaire – in a single historical work – integrates very distinct themes and narrative methods ir order to comprehend not isolated facts, but the growth of human spirit within a certain period of time. We shall discuss, thus, how Le Siècle de Louis XIV seems to not only suggest a new idea of what historical relevancy, but a new way to report the past that, despite lacking the philosophical consistency of the XIXth century historiography, is no longer solely interested in the exemplarity of political and military facts.

JOAO DE AZEVEDO E DIAS DUARTE 12 June 2014 (has links)
[en] This is a dissertation about the Enlightenment. It does not seek to celebrate the triumphant course of reason and the light of science over faith and religious darkness, nor to denounce an assumed Enlightenment project, pointing out its shortcomings and flaws regarding matters of empire, class, gender, race, and ethnicity. Rather, it seeks to understand one particular form taken by this historical phenomenon in a specific context: England, in the wake of the bloody civil and religious war that fractured it in the seventeenth-century. I argue that the English Enlightenment is an intellectual phenomenon endogenous to the religious and political debates that took place in the period known as the Restoration. Conducted mostly in the language of Reformation and opposing various conceptions of the Protestant religion, these debates concerned the relation between belief and civil and ecclesiastic authority. The central point that this Dissertation articulates, through an examination of these debates, is that the cultural operation that gave birth to the English Enlightenment did not merely mean a subordination of religion to civil power, but meant, above all, the invention of a civil religion, which merged the Christian caritas traditions and the principle – particularly important in the protestant religious experience – of the individual’s responsibility concerning his own salvation in the juridical, civic, and, especially, social senses of civil.

[en] HUME AND HISTORY: AN ANALYSIS ON THE ESSAYS MORAL, POLITICAL AND LITERARY / [pt] DAVID HUME E HISTÓRIA: UMA ANÁLISE DOS ENSAIOS MORAIS, POLÍTICOS E LITERÁRIOS

FLAVIO DA SILVA RIBEIRO 15 February 2007 (has links)
[en] The present research aims to comprehend some thoughts on history within the Essays Moral, Political and Literary, by the Scottish philosopher David Hume (1711-1776). In this particular work (1758), whose dominating characteristic is the heterogeneity of the proposed themes, the author is looking for the knowledge of human affairs under a secular perspective, exposing that between an idealization of society (including the moral conduct of men who live under her) and its concrete reality, the choice towards the very true knowledge must stand with the last, demystifying any metaphysical and religious hypothesis as guides to the capacity of learning. Taking England as a preferential example of the advances and problems of modern Europe, Hume sets some reflections - just as moderation in politics affairs and the economic interdependence among States - which observe the goal of founding a science of politics. In its basis remains an empirical criticism, which leads the Scot to conceive a priority to the general aspects of societies (as economy, institutions, technical advances) as a model of explanation on the historical dynamics, which, according to his conception, is transformed slowly and gradually, in a sequential way, never or rarely trough fast and immediate changes. One looked for, besides these aspects, to analyze the methodological importance of the author´s general rule to the historical concern, for, by using her, Hume wonders about the past and either proposes general directions for his time and future, marking, this way, how societies historically must have developed and how they, probably, would develop themselves from now on, aiming the first step to a scientific knowledge of society as a whole, that would be able to remain even through the circumstantial changes that naturally take place in societies.

[en] THE AESTHETICS OF ORDER: HARMONY AND IMPERFECTION ON THE PHILOSOPHICAL WORK OF ADAM SMITH / [pt] A ESTÉTICA DA ORDEM: HARMONIA E IMPERFEIÇÃO NA OBRA FILOSÓFICA DE ADAM SMITH

JOAO DE AZEVEDO E DIAS DUARTE 13 November 2008 (has links)
[en] This dissertation deals with Adam Smith`s view on the nature of human activity, proposing an interpretation of this eighteenth century Scottish philosopher`s works on intellectual history and ethics. It is suggested that his philosophy is marked by a keen awareness of human imperfection and finitude. It demonstrates that Adam Smith`s thought is also, however, an effort of reconciliation with this essential imperfection. Smith`s reflection is directed to the task of showing how it would be possible for mankind, notwithstanding its limitations, to maintain a regular and harmonious existence and to advance from a cognitive, moral and material point of view. According to Adam Smith`s view, the human spirit is moved by a spontaneous and disinterested impulse to the realization of order, harmony and beauty in the different spheres of its activity. Nonetheless, although the spirit is naturally order- seeking, an absolutely symmetrical situation is never actualized because of the very imperfection of mankind. Such a situation wouldn`t even be bearable to human creatures. The first chapter has its analytical focus on an early text from Adam Smith`s called The History of Astronomy, and puts it into dialogue with the thought of David Hume. The subject here is how Smith, adopting Hume`s theory of imagination, partakes in the Humean project of a science of human nature. The second chapter discusses Adam Smith`s work on ethics, The Theory of the Moral Sentiments, and its central concept, sympathy.
