[en] RECOMMENDER SYSTEM TO SUPPORT CHART CONSTRUCTIONS WITH STATISTICAL DATA / [pt] SISTEMA DE RECOMENDAÇÃO PARA APOIAR A CONSTRUÇÃO DE GRÁFICOS COM DADOS ESTATÍSTICOSTAISSA ABDALLA FILGUEIRAS DE SOUSA 13 September 2013 (has links)
[en] Research on statistical data visualization emphasizes the need for systems that assist in decision-making and visual analysis. Having found problems in chart construction by novice users, we decided to research the following question: How can we support novice users to create efficient visualizations with statistical data? Thus we, created ViSC, a recommender system that supports the interactive construction of charts to visualize statistical data by offering a series of recommendations based on the selected data and the user interaction with the tool. The system explores a visualization ontology to offer a set of graphs that help to answer information-based questions related to the current graph data. By traversing the recommended graphs through their related questions, the user implicitly acquires knowledge both on the domain and on visualization resources that better represent the domain concepts of interest. This dissertation presents the problems that motivated the research, describes the ViSC tool and presents the results of a qualitative study conducted to evaluate ViSC. We used two methods in our evaluation: the Semiotic Inspection Method (SIM) and the Retrospective Communicability Evaluation (RCE) — a combination of the Communicability Evaluation Method (CEM) and Retrospective Think Aloud Protocol. We first analyze how the questions influence the users traversal through the graph and, then, we address the broader question.

[en] EVALUATION OF 2D-3D VISUALIZATION AND ATTENTION MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES FOR THE OPERATION OF INDUSTRIAL PLANTS / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DE TÉCNICAS DE VISUALIZAÇÃO 2D-3D E DE GESTÃO DE ATENÇÃO PARA OPERAÇÃO DE PLANTAS INDUSTRIAISMARCELA COSTA CAMARA DO BOMFIM 28 November 2013 (has links)
[en] 3D Visualization can be valid for different purposes. 2D visualizations can
decrease the occlusion in specific parts, show undistorted angles and distances and
enable precise positioning and navigation. Already the 3D visualization can
provide an overview of the space, illustrate shapes of objects, offering precise
notions of size and distance and support free navigation, and allows the user to
understand how this place is in reality or quickly recognize it when the place is
already known physically. Despite the advantages of the 3D environment, we are
still encountering some challenges in this environment, such as the occlusion of
objects, which, in an environment of real-time monitoring, can bring some
dangers. The main objective of this research is to provide an environment that
supports a scenario of industrial plants monitoring in real time, exploring
techniques of information visualization and scientific data in an integrated
environment that mixes 2D and 3D visualizations, determining how important
information will be displayed to call the user’s attention through warnings about
risky situations. Currently, this monitoring is made on a 2D space plant and some
factors motivated the migration of this type of visualization for the 3D
environment, such as ease the perception of the mapping to the action vision,
communication between different teams who do not know the plant and the
intention of, in the future, make the operation system an integrated part of other
areas of expertise that already use this 3D environment. Thus, this study’s main
research question is to investigate ways of combining these techniques and
propose ways to handle the occlusion, the difficulties of navigation in the 3D
environment and different ways to draw the user’s attention, considering both the
events that are in his field of vision as those who are outside of his field of view
(due to the possibility of free navigation).

[en] EXTREME COMMUNICATION-CENTERED DESIGN: AN AGILE PROCESS FOR HUMANCOMPUTER INTERACTION DESIGN / [pt] EXTREME COMMUNICATION-CENTERED DESIGN: UM PROCESSO ÁGIL PARA O PROJETO DA INTERAÇÃO HUMANO-COMPUTADORVIVIANE CRISTINA OLIVEIRA AURELIANO 26 December 2007 (has links)
àqueles voltados a prototipação (métodos ágeis).
documentação reduzida, focando principalmente a
implementação do sistema, a
destaque no processo
No
eXtreme
Programming (XP). / [en] Interactive software development can follow different
kinds of processes,
from specification-driven approaches (traditional methods)
to prototype-driven
approaches (agile methods). Due to the emphasis in
documentation since its initial
phases, traditional methods allow for more reflection on
the software before its
implementation and contribute to better maintainability.
On the other hand, agile
methods have reduced documentation, concentrating mainly
on the
implementation of the system, in order to increase the
productivity in the software
development process. As software becomes more interactive
and accessible to a
wider range of users, human-computer interaction (HCI)
concerns have been
gaining emphasis in the software development process.
However, schedule and
budget restrictions limit the application of known and
accepted HCI techniques.
As a consequence, and similar to what happened with
software development
processes, there has been a tendency to adopt simplified
usability practices, such
as checklists and guidelines. In order to deal with such
concerns at design time,
and in a way that is not so simplified, this work unites
some advantages of
different kinds of software development processes to
define an HCI design
process. This process brings together the support for
reflection given by the
Semiotic Engineering (SemEng) theory and the agility of
interface prototype
techniques, incorporating the values and practices from
agile methods, more
specifically of the eXtreme Programming (XP) development
process.

[en] COMUNIHC-ES: AN HCI TOOL TO SUPPORT THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN HCI PROFESSIONALS AND SOFTWARE ENGINEERS / [pt] COMUNIHC-ES: FERRAMENTA DE APOIO À COMUNICAÇÃO ENTRE PROFISSIONAIS DE IHC E ENGENHEIROS DE SOFTWAREMAIRA GRECO DE PAULA 31 March 2008 (has links)
[pt] O desenvolvimento de sistemas interativos envolve
profissionais de várias áreas,
dentre as quais interação humano-computador (IHC) e
A partir
deste entendimento, IHC projeta a interface e interação,
tendo como atividade constante a
avaliação dos artefatos produzidos. Já a ESw tem como
principal objetivo a especificação,
implementação e testes das funcionalidades e arquitetura do
sistema interativo. Essas duas
usuários, as tarefas envolvidas e o
[en] Developing interactive systems involves professionals from
many areas of expertise,
including HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) and Software
Engineering (SE), each one
with specific focus and goals. HCI focuses, generally, on
understanding the users`
characteristics, needs and objectives, their work
environment and the tasks they need or
want to perform using the system. Based on this
understanding, HCI designs interface and
interaction, constantly evaluating the produced artifacts.
SE, on the other hand, aims
primarily at specifying, implementing and testing the
interactive system`s functionalities
and architecture. These two areas have a common objective:
to create an interactive system
that meets the needs of its users. To attain this goal,
this work supposes that, throughout the
development process, communication is needed between the
professionals from these areas,
in order to create a shared understanding about the problem
and about what should be built,
so that, consequently, the developed application layer will
be compatible with the
interaction layer, promoting the consistency of what will
be presented to the end user. Thus,
to support both the communication and the negotiation about
interaction design between
HCI and SE professionals, this research proposes a
communication tool based on semiotic
engineering, called ComunIHC-ES. This tool contains
information about the problem
domain, its users, the tasks involved and the usage
context; a language to represent the
interaction; and elements that help to explain the HCI
design to software engineers.
ComunIHC-ES was used in a case study involving
professionals from both areas and, after
analyzing its results, indications were obtained of its
usefulness in supporting both the HCISE
communication and the software engineers work.

observância de requisitos de acessibilidade tem impacto
direto na qualidade da
interação entre pessoas diferentes e sistemas
computacionais.
práticas do design visando
delinear um framework teórico-metodológico para abordar a
acessibilidade, a
usabilidade, o desenho universal e a interação humano-
visual. No entanto, o Decreto
verdadeiramente inclusiva. / [en] In Brazil, the access to the information is a right of all

foresees a stated period of
12 months (to count of the date of its publication) to

The observance of accessibility requirements has direct
impact in the quality of the
interaction between different people and computational

human-computer interaction viable to a heterogeneous
public in some aspects,
interfaces´ design has demanded each time more attention
the solutions that can
flexibly the interaction and the access to the information

its different users. This research is based on design´s
practical and concepts aiming to
delineate a theory-methodological framework to approach
the accessibility, the
usability, the universal design and the human-computer
interaction with the objective
to identify if accessibility´s guidelines, indicated by
the Brazilian Government in
2004, are enough for the adequacy of the governmental
websites´ content for people
with visual deficiency. Field research had been carried
out using questionnaire with
developers, accessibility evaluation in the Eletrobrás´
website (case study), interviews
with Eletrobrás´ managers, development of a prototype and
carried through a
cooperative evaluation with blind people users testing the
prototype. From the
organization and analysis of the collected data it was
possible to confirm the
hypothesis of this research and to define that even the
recommendations are enough
to take care of to the Decree, they are not efficient to
facilitate the websites´ use for
the blind people users. However, Decree 5,296/2004 was a
first step to a truly
inclusive society.

[en] USABILITY STUDY OF VIRTUAL TRIDIMENSIONAL ENVIRONMENTS USING SECOND LIFE / [pt] ESTUDO DE USABILIDADE DE AMBIENTES VIRTUAIS TRIDIMENSIONAIS ATRAVÉS DO SECOND LIFEBRENO GENTIL 11 August 2008 (has links)
internet.
ambientes virtuais tridimensionais. Desta forma, buscamos
identificar tais problemas e formulamos recomendações para
o design de interfaces envolvendo a interação 3D.
Inicialmente construímos um referencial teórico combinando
capítulos de tecnologia tridimensional, percepção visual e
conceitos de usabilidade e interação humano-computador. Em
permitindo afirmar que a usabilidade do Second Life, apesar
tridimensionais. / [en] This research deals with the usability study of three-
dimensional interaction through virtual environments on the
internet. The object of this study is the interaction
experienced using Second Life, a virtual collaborative
environment on the internet that allows users to explore
digital worlds and meet other people in real time. It was
considered as hypothesis that Second Life has usability
problems that compromises the interaction experience for
computer users new to threedimensional virtual
environments. Therefore this research aimed at discovering
such problems and recommending solutions for better design
of this type of interfaces. Initially we built a
theoretical reference combining three-dimensional
technologies, visual perception and important usability
concepts. After that, we applied the usability test
technique followed by a post-test questionnaire dealing
with the factors of presence and subjective satisfaction.
The results obtained confirmed the hypothesis by showing
that the interaction experience in Second Life, besides a
good subjective satisfaction, is compromised by usability
problems that affect computer users new to virtual three-
dimensional environments.

[en] DESIGNER-TO-USER META-COMMUNICATION IN HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION: HELP SYSTEM DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT / [pt] METACOMUNICAÇÃO DESIGNER-USUÁRIO NA INTERAÇÃO HUMANO-COMPUTADOR DESIGN E CONSTRUÇÃO DO SISTEMA DE AJUDAMILENE SELBACH SILVEIRA 19 September 2003 (has links)
A melhor alternativa
Neste
sentido, o trabalho aqui apresentado estende o modelo
discurso. / [en] This work is based on the Semiotic Engineering theory of Human-Computer Interaction. This theory views the application interface as a meta-communication act, a message from designer to user, representing the designers view of the artifact he developed. Since the designer cannot be present in the interface, he is represented by his deputy, who is endowed with a communicative capacity that allows it to carry out a discourse that is complete and exclusively regarding the designers final conclusions about the needs, preferences, capacities and opportunities that he understands the user has. Being impossible to predict all the interpretations that each user can generate for the application, the designer needs, through his deputy, to explain everything that he did (and why he did it), and to give the users a chance to clarify their doubts. The best alternative for metacommunication is, certainly, the help system. In this way, the work herein
proposed extends the current theoretical model of Semiotic Engineering, making explicit the presence of the help system and its communicative role. The purpose of this extension is to provide software designers with epistemic tools to support them when constructing their application s help systems. These tools allow designers to explore help systems communicative power, supporting them in the reflection about the materials available for its elaboration (design models, design rationale, among others), thus supporting them both in the construction of the discourse embedded in the help system, and in the elaboration of the possible ways the user will be able to express himself within this discourse.

[en] MODEL-BASED DESIGN OF HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION GROUNDED ON SEMIOTIC ENGINEERING: AN INTERACTION MODEL / [pt] PROJETO DA INTERAÇÃO HUMANO-COMPUTADOR BASEADO EM MODELOS FUNDAMENTADOS NA ENGENHARIA SEMIÓTICA: CONSTRUÇÃO DE UM MODELO DE INTERAÇÃOMAIRA GRECO DE PAULA 11 November 2003 (has links)
complexidade do projeto de interação humano-computador
(IHC). No entanto, a maioria destes modelos englobam
elementos que deveriam ser contemplados por modelos
distintos.
No
[en] Due to the propagation of personal computers, it is
increasingly important to build highly usable user
interfaces, taking into account users characteristics,
preferences, and needs. Diverse models have been proposed
to cope with the complexity of human-computer interaction
(HCI) design. However, most of them deal at once with
elements that should be addressed by distinct models.
Moreover, many of these models are based on cognitive
theories, which focus mainly on the individual interacting
with an application, without exploring the fact that an
application is the product of a rational decision-making
process carried out by a designer. This gap is dealt with
by Semiotic Engineering, a theory of HCI which views the
interface as a designer-to-users message, representing the
designers solution to what he believes are the users
problems, needs, and preferences. In this message, he is
telling users, directly or indirectly, what he had in mind
when he conceived the application. Within Semiotic
Engineering, this work extends scenarios, adapts an
existing task model and builds a model which treats
interaction as conversation. Our goal is to conceive models
and representations that serve, each under a clear
perspective, as epistemic tools that support the
designers reflection about the interactive solution being
conceived. A small case study was conducted to evaluate the
quality of an interactive solution designed using the
proposed task and interaction models, in comparison with
CTT, a widely used task model.

[pt] ERGONOMIA E USABILIDADE DE INTERFACES PARA CRIANÇAS, O ESTUDO DE CASO DO GAME SPORE / [en] ERGONOMICS AND USABILITY OF INTERFACES FOR CHILDREN, THE CASE STUDY ABOUT GAME SPOREADRIANA STELLA CHAMMAS 09 August 2011 (has links)
A pesquisa
relevância do tema.
no usuário (a criança).
A metodologia englobou a Avaliação Heurística, Avaliação
Cooperativa, Entrevistas Estruturadas e Escalas de Avaliação. As técnicas
otimizar a Interação Criança-Computador. / [en] The theme of this study is Ergonomics and its Applicability to Interfaces
for children, the case study of Game Spore. The emphasis of this study is the
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and the Ergodesign of interfaces focused on
the user. The attention placed by the games market on children, and the
importance of games to children´s lives, support the relevance of studying this
topic. This study examines whether ergonomic sounds in the communication
child-task-machine in the interface of children´s games is too great and whether,
excess of color, elements and animation impede the user’s ability to concentrate
and attend to all tasks. The subjects of this study are children between the ages of
9 to 11, and the object is a game. The methodology used includes a heuristic
evaluation, a cooperative evaluation, structured interviews and evaluation scale.
The heuristic evaluation was performed by professionals. The cooperative
evaluation and structured interviews focused on the opinions and problems
encountered by users while interacting with the system. The evaluation scale
measured quantitatively the ease of interacting with the program and how
enjoyable the game was. Usability problems were identified which compromised
the continual use of the interface. Results upheld the hypothesis of this study and
allowed for its objectives to be reached. 78.38% of the children studied, were so
absorbed in the game that they forgot to accomplish the tasks set, thus in the
analysis of the findings, it can be concluded that cognitive and interactive sounds
distract the user from the task set and that the usefulness of interfaces for children
should follow ergonomic recommendations to optimize the interaction between
children and computers.

[en] SUPPORTING INTERACTION AND INTERFACE DESIGN AND EVALUATION / [pt] APOIANDO O PROJETO E AVALIAÇÃO DA INTERAÇÃO E DA INTERFACE: UM ESTUDO E UMA FERRAMENTAUGO BRAGA SANGIORGI 30 August 2010 (has links)
No entanto,
[en] Nowadays, with the growing popularity of the Internet and mobile devices,
interactive systems have increasingly gained ground among different people,
with different cultural backgrounds. However, the design of the interaction
that takes place between the users and those systems is not properly
supported by tools nor notations, turning the interactive experience into a
mere consequence of the internal functions of the systems – in which errors
are treated as exceptions and must therefore be avoided, instead of properly
supported. This work presents a study on how systems design might be
supported by a model that combines interaction and interface design, and
a tool to support this modeling and to generate prototypes, supporting
the designer’s reflection about the interactive solution being created. The
MoLIC language is used to represent the systems behaviour and sketches
are used to represent the interface in a combined model. The prototypes
are generated from a sequence of sketches, guided by the interaction model.
An exploratory study was conducted in order to gather feedback about the
proposed approach and to investigate the feasibility of the integrated project
