[en] PERCEPTIVE SUBLIMINAL STIMULI IN VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS: EFFECTS ON CONSUMER`S ATTITUDE AND CHOICE / [pt] ESTÍMULOS SUBLIMINARES PERCEPTIVOS EM AMBIENTES VIRTUAIS: EFEITOS NA ATITUDE E NA ESCOLHA DO CONSUMIDOR

LABRUNA REPOLHES ROMAO VIEIRA 29 December 2010 (has links)
[en] For several years, a new model has been developing that is altering the traditional view of advertising which uses media types that follow, essentially, a passive communication model. The Internet model provides to enterprises the possibility to set up a shared environment, where an interactive communication module is followed and changes the way of doing business with customers. In a virtual space, an observer is able to encode and store information exposed outside its focus of attention, so that the exposure itself and her frequency can be prosecuted even without the individual s consciousness. This study sought through a survey in a sample of students from PUC-Rio, examine the effects of frequency of exposure to subliminal stimuli perception of a given brand in a virtual environment on choice and consumer attitudes. The results showed evidence that an observer with attitude towards the brand very favorable is more likely to select the brand processed unconsciously as the frequency of exposures increases. There was no clear evidence of differentiation in attitude by the frequency of exposure, but was found an influence of attitude on brand choice.

[en] E SE COLOCAR PIMENTA: SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF CHILLI BEANS BRAND IDENTITY / [pt] E SE COLOCAR PIMENTA?: ANÁLISE SEMIÓTICA DA IDENTIDADE DA MARCA CHILLI BEANS

VIVIANE DE AZEVEDO SANTANA 17 July 2012 (has links)
[en] This paper presents the case of a Brazilian fashion accessories brand, Chilli Beans. The analysis assumed the Project/ Manifestation model of brand identity, proposed by Andrea Semprini (2010), which is based on the theoretical and methodological tools of the French approach to discursive-semiotics, that are not very explored in Brazilian market research yet. Designed for the postmodern context, the model compares the proposal of brand identity - set out by its managers - with the brand identity as it is observed by the public through the manifestation of the brand, and what is intended is to check the compatibility between them. The goal of this study is, therefore, explicit approaches and departures between the project proposed by brand managers and the public’s interpretations of brand manifestations. The methodology consists of qualitative research involving interviews with brand executives and the public affected by it. This material is then analyzed according to the proposed by Semprini (2010). The study results indicate correlation between what the brand is intended to be and how the public appreciates it. However, some specific brand manifestations attenuate this relationship. Identifying those weaknesses enables brand managers to adapt their meaning proposition or the way they present their manifestations, in order to establishing a more consistent brand.

[en] BRAND PERSONALITY OF FAST-FOOD: A COMPARISON BETWEEN BRAZILIAN AND AMERICAN YOUTH CONSUMERS / [pt] PERSONALIDADE DE MARCAS DE FAST-FOOD: UMA COMPARAÇÃO ENTRE CONSUMIDORES JOVENS BRASILEIROS E AMERICANOS

FERNANDA MARCIA ARAUJO MACIEL 01 September 2011 (has links)
[en] This study aimed to determine what are the dimensions of brand personality perceived by young consumers in the U.S. and Brazil, when it comes to brands McDonald s and Subway, and if these dimensions have similar settings in both countries. We used the dimensions of brand personality proposed by Aaker (1997), in the American context, and Muniz (2005), in Brazilian context. From these two studies, we obtained a single scale with 67 items for measuring brand personality. The field research was conducted through self-structured questionnaires, hand delivered to respondents by the researcher. A convenience sample was composed of 203 young Brazilian consumers (students of PUC-Rio) and 207 Americans (students of Boston University). We identified five dimensions of brand personality, as previously studies, for each of the brands studied in each country. The survey also verified the influence by relationship between familiarity and brand personality perception among consumers. The results were analyzed using the techniques of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The findings point out similarities and differences between the perceptions of personality of the brands McDonald s and Subway, from young Brazilian and American consumers.

[en] THE IMPORTANCE OF BRAND IN THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF BRAZILIAN COMPANIES: CASE STUDIES IN BEVERAGES INDUSTRY / [pt] A IMPORTÂNCIA DA MARCA NA INTERNACIONALIZAÇÃO DE EMPRESAS BRASILEIRAS: UM ESTUDO DE CASOS NA INDÚSTRIA DE BEBIDAS

ALESSANDRA DE CARVALHO ARAGAO 18 December 2009 (has links)
[en] The movement of Brazilian companies seeking for new markets abroad has increased in the latest years. Some companies stand out by selling products with aggregate value and their brand represent a relevant competitive force. Before making this move, these enterprises need to adopt a marketing strategy with a brand focus in the internationalization process. This study is looking for verifying the international marketing strategy adopted by two Brazilian companies and their respective products - Guaraná Antarctica and the beers Xingu and Palma Louca. This work also seeks to identify the relevance of brand origin effect in the search of Brazilian products by some foreign consumers. This descriptive job based on case studies, intended to evaluate the launch of genuine Brazilian products in external markets, in light of the existing literature. The case studies were based on documents and detailed interviews with companies’ executives and with their distributors/ importers. A survey through a questionnaire has been also conducted with foreign students living in Brazil, to evaluate their perceptions in relation to products made in Brazil. The results show that brand management permits the differentiation of company in the international market. Nevertheless, the major challenge in the internationalization process is still the right choice of the entering way in each new market. In the case of Guaraná Antarctica, the brand origin effect was positive for this product, suggesting a greater inclination for consumption by the fact that it is a typical Brazilian product.

[pt] O NOME DA MARCA E SUA IMPORTÂNCIA NA CONSTRUÇÃO DE IDENTIDADES DE EMPRESAS E PRODUTOS / [en] THE BRAND NAME AND ITS IMPORTANCE TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF COMPANIES AND PRODUCTS IDENTITIES

21 October 2005 (has links)
[en] This research takes into account the fact that the way in which a brand name is conceived can influence in the construction of the companies or products/services identities and consequently influence in the creative process and the designer´s method of work. This way, we created the hypothesis that creative and strategic solutions to the construction of companies and products identities are influenced by the Naming process. To this end, a lot of interviews have been made with autonomous professionals and others connected with offices with headquarters in the city of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and that work in the segment of Corporate Identity and Branding. The intension was verifying what the current vision of the concepts of brand and brand identity is, and until what point the designers involve themselves in the conception of brand names. After the analysis of the results, it was verified that there is a new scenario being formed in the design market in Brazil, where various companies that used to specialize in only supplying design projects are gradually migrating to Branding territory; following the tendencies historically verified abroad. The data obtained from the research aims to contribute to the understanding of the insertion of these new activities, Naming and Branding, in the designers work field, at the same time that they help to comprehend the role of this professional in the construction of this new scenario.

[en] BRANDS THAT PEOPLE LOVE: A STUDY ABOUT THE EMOTIONAL RELATIONSHIP OF PEOPLE WITH BRANDS / [pt] MARCAS QUE MARCAM: UM ESTUDO SOBRE A RELAÇÃO EMOCIONAL DAS PESSOAS COM AS MARCAS

JULIA PEIXOTO DE CARVALHO LIMA 26 June 2008 (has links)
[en] This is a study of brands that was carried out from a Design and Emotion point of view which has as focal point the context in which the brands are used and the reasons for which some brands become dear to us. Its objective is to investigate the experiences the brands create, the feelings they evoke and the social relations they promote. It was from the gathering of testimony about brands that people love that this study was conducted. The following three steps were used: (1) a investigation into blogs and sites on the internet; (2) in person and virtual talks with people of different ages and life styles; (3) and group dynamics with the PUC-Rio design students. It was guided by the thinking of authors in the field of Design and Emotion as the neuroscientist Antonio Damásio, and the cognitive scientist Donald Norman. The stories on brands that people love were organized into categories according to the interviewees responses. This step was guided by the study of the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and the anthropologist Eugene Rochberg-Halton on the endearing relationship of people with their household artifacts. Some of these categories were also mentioned in light of the thinking of social science authors as Mary Douglas e Claude Lévi-Strauss. The results from this investigation confirm that brands participate in every day actions, they provide experiences, they are links between people, and as such they evoke all sorts of feelings. They also show us that there is a close relationship between these experiences, the feelings they evoke and the choosing of the brands that will be part of our lives. Furthermore the results reveal that through some brands people build identities; establish social relations, differentiate themselves and group up. The study of brands that people love provides data to the Design and Emotion, and contributes to its goal of not only designing products with focus on the promotion of experiences and positive feelings, but also contributing towards a more responsible and fraternal society.

[pt] NOME DE PRODUTO, MARCA DE PESSOA: CONSUMO, PUBLICIDADE E CLASSIFICAÇÃO / [en] PRODUCT S NAME, PERSON S BRAND: CONSUMPTION, ADVERTISING AND CLASSIFICATION

JULIANA LOURENCO DA SILVA LOPES 01 February 2006 (has links)
[en] A survey based on the Social Security Administration data called the attention for a curious phenomenon: children whose names are product s brands well-known in the market. The result shows that, in the American society, it already has certain statistic relevance the fact that babies are being named after brands such as: Armani, Porsche, L Oreal or Pepsi. A similar research, conducted for this dissertation, was based on the yellow pages and civil register offices from all over the country, which allowed us to establish the occurrence of this phenomenon also in Brazil. The purpose of this work is to investigate the event, which can be considered a limit case of the insertion of consumption elements as a form of classification. Through interviews with people whose inspiration for nomination were products, it was possible to collect stories that allowed us to deepen determined aspects of this new social logic, in which brands can become names of human beings. It was sought to examine this radical form of identification between products and people, the classificatory system that derivates from it and the role that the advertising plays in this process.

[pt] MARCAS PRÓPRIAS: UM ESTUDO DOS MERCADOS SUPERMERCADISTAS FRANCÊS E BRASILEIRO / [en] PRIVATE LABELS: A BRAZILIAN AND FRENCH GROCERY RETAIL MARKET STUDY

DANIEL SALDANHA ERTHAL 22 November 2007 (has links)
[en] Private Labels (PL s) products blunts as being one of the main tools for retailers to grow and to foment their profits. In developed countries such as France and the US, they already represent 36 percent and 20 percent of the total grocery retail sales respectively. In Brazil, this percentage still does not exceed 7 percent. The purpose of this study is to undertake a comparative analysis between the Brazilian and French PL markets verifying their similarities and differences to outline the possible future perspectives for this segment in Brazil. The French retail market has been selected because of the maturity of its market concerning PLs and due to the two main Brazilian grocery retailers being controlled directly or indirectly by French companies. The literature on this topic in Brazil is still limited and, in it s majority is focused on the industry-retail relationship, with a few references to international markets as it is proposed in this study (Brito et al., 2004). From data collected in personal interviews with top managers of the main Brazilian and French grocery retailers which represent 85 percent and 75 percent of PL s total sales in their markets, an overview of the Brazilian market and a comparison between the two markets has been built. Subsequently, based on the analised data, possible Brazilian PL market scenarios have been outlined. The results show that the Brazilian market is still underdeveloped when compared to the French one due to the Brazilian market History and to the high involvment with brands by Brazilian consumers. The perspective concerning the Brazilian market in the near future is to professionalize itself, with an increase in consumer acceptance and to develop new product categories in the medium and long term.

[en] MEANINGS OF NEW LUXURY: A STUDY ABOUT THE BRAND NESPRESSO AND ITS CONSUMERS / [pt] SIGNIFICADOS DO NOVO LUXO: UM ESTUDO SOBRE A MARCA NESPRESSO E SEUS CONSUMIDORES

MARCELA MARIA GALLINAL CUENCA 04 January 2010 (has links)
[en] Over the last two decades the luxury market has undergone a major transformation. In particular, we have witnessed the emergence of a so-called new luxury market by the authors. This new market comprises the masstige movement, which designates the initiatives taken by some mass production companies to try to reach demanding high-income customers by offering them more sophisticated products (COSTA, 2008). This is a promising market in terms of profitability, and is also a very challenging. It seeks to combine the characteristics of luxury brands and products with mass production, which is unusual in the luxury market. The new luxury requires a strong understanding of customers’ behavior and their purchase motivations (SILVERSTEIN e FISKE, 2003). An analysis of the strategy adopted by the Nespresso brand, launched by Nestlé in 1976, which is well-positioned in the luxury market and representative of the masstige trend, is carried out in the present research. Its main purpose is to shed light on the perceptions and motivations of ‘new luxury’ consumers, by investigating customers of the Nespresso brand, their definitions of brand value and their concept of luxury. Thus, a description of the Nespresso case based on documental research, and a qualitative research based on in-depth interviews with brand consumers were carried out. The results present a comparative analysis between the values associated to the Nespresso brand and those associated to the concept of luxury. From the market view, they can contribute to Nespresso management as well as to the management of other brands inserted in the masstige movement. From a theoretical view, they bring insights on the meaning of luxury and its relationships with the offers of the companies in this segment.

[en] THE RELATION BETWEEN BRANDING STRATEGY AND THE INTANGIBLE VALUE OF A CORPORATION: AN ANALYSIS OF THE BRAZILIAN MARKET REALITY / [pt] RELAÇÃO ENTRE ESTRATÉGIA DE MARCA E VALOR INTANGÍVEL DE UMA CORPORAÇÃO: UMA ANÁLISE A PARTIR DA REALIDADE DO MERCADO BRASILEIRO

ANDRE MEIRA COELHO MELHADO 18 July 2007 (has links)
[en] Companies define their branding strategy in order to maximize profits, increase competitiveness and, as a result, their market value, which is, in its turn, composed by the company´s both tangible and intangible assets. The corporation s competitive edge is less and less based on its tangible assets - such as inventory, facilities, equipments and machinery - focusing on efforts to create value through intangible assets. Recent studies display evidence that intangible assets have been responsible for creating additional value for a company, the brand being the most relevant asset. In spite of numerous researches in branding, corporations have their own interpretation of the best branding strategy, hence the various ways to manage brand portfolios, with various denominations, even among companies operating in the same market. Regarding those aspects, this research aimed to analyze the impact caused by the deployment of a certain branding strategy in a company s intangible value, through a multiple linear regression model, developed by Rao, Agarwal and Dahlholf, which uses Tobin´s quotient (Tobin´s q) as a dependent variable to measure the intangible assets and an array of independent variables that interfere in their value. The present study was based on a sample of 83 companies operating in the Brazilian market and negotiated in São Paulo´s stock exchange (BOVESPA), between 2003 and 2005, and considered the branding strategy taxonomy used by the authors mentioned, which include three categories: Corporate, House of brands and Mixed. The results point that the model is robust, showing that branding strategies, and the control variables, cause impact in a company´s intangible value. However, the coefficients shown for each of the independent variables, and also for the branding strategies, differ from those found in the research developed in the USA. The House of Brands strategy turned out with a positive connection, rejecting the initial hypothesis that such strategy would be connected to a negative coefficient. On the other hand, the value associated with the Corporate strategy´s coefficient turned out positive, resonating with the suggested hypothesis, though in an inferior amplitude than House of Brands´. That particular point was not part of the North-American research, showing how the evaluations of the two markets differ from one another. The study indicates, among other aspects, that investors and consumers weight differently both branding strategies and the control variables used.
