Exploring Turkish American Fathers: Father Involvement, Father's Perception of Maternal Gatekeeping, Competence, and Conservatism

Soyer, Gonca Feyza 05 1900 (has links)
There has been an increase in the fatherhood studies with minority groups in the United States in the past decades; however, these studies rarely included Turkish American fathers. To the best of the authors knowledge, current study was the first to explore father involvement in relation to fathers' perception of mothers' gate-keeping, fathers' competence as a parent, and their cultural stance as related to conservatism among a sample of Turkish American fathers with children between the ages of 3 to 6 years (n = 103). An exploratory factor analysis was conducted to examine the factor loadings of gate-closing and gate-opening items. The results yielded a two-factor solution with one suppressed item, and two cross-loading items with factor loadings bigger than .32. A path analysis was conducted to determine whether father's competence in relation to gate-closing and gate-opening, and father's conservatism adequately described father involvement through regression paths. The results of the chi-square goodness-of-fit test were not significant, χ2(3) = 1.84, p = .607, suggesting that the model fit the data well. Father's competency significantly predicted father involvement (B = 0.56, SE = .211, p = .008). Gate-closing (B = -30.48, SE = 15.340, p = .047) and gate-opening (B = 1.20, SE = .298, p < .001) significantly predicted father involvement. Gate-closing partially mediated the relationship between father's competency and father involvement (B = 0.11, SE = .063, p = .004) while gate-opening didn't yield mediation. And finally, conservatism did not significantly predict father involvement (B = -0.09, SE = -1.11, p = .266). The results suggest that with Turkish American fathers, competency, gate-closing and gate-opening are good predictors of father involvement, while conservatism is not a good predictor in this current study.

Komunikace Andreje Babiše na sociálních sítích jako rutinní informační zdroj pro novinářskou práci a přímý informační zdroj pro veřejnost / Social Network Communication of Andrej Babiš and Its Position as a Routine Information Source for Journalism Work and Dirrect Information Source for General Public

Tomeš, Michal January 2021 (has links)
This master's thesis project examines the content of Andrej Babiš's social media profiles and their function as a source of information. This study captures and describes current trends of political communication with an emphasis on the use of social media as an influential tool used for sharing content for the general and professional public. In this case, the focus is on internet communication of the Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. The emphasis is to examine social media as a part of media routines and its role in the concept of gatekeeping and subsequent creation of the news and opinion journalistic content. The research part of this thesis consists of three segments and focuses on the process of using social media as a source of information. The main research method is quantitative research supplemented by a questionnaire. The research was conducted to find out what informational value the social media of Andrej Babiš's have.

Phygital Fashion Week : A Qualitative Study of the Contemporary Copenhagen Fashion Week

Turner, Joanna, Poth, Andrea, Göthelid, Linnea January 2023 (has links)
The value of fashion week’s physical presence has been questioned in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic, when fashion week became fully digital. Once the pandemic subsided, the digital attributes were retained and combined with the physical space, resulting in a phygital fashion week. This new phenomenon, the contemporary fashion week that combines on-site and online activities, has therefore received little academic research. There is a lack of academic knowledge about how the post-pandemic setting of fashion week affects the physical value. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the post-pandemic setting of fashion week has affected the value of physical presence in regards to marketing communication through the lens of Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW). By conducting a case study of CPHFW, the goal is to bridge the gap by providing new research within the field of fashion marketing. A qualitative research approach was used to provide an in-depth perspective of CPHFW. The chosen data collection techniques were a combination of ethnographic and netnographic methods. The ethnographic methods were conducted on-site, physically at the AW 23 season of CPHFW, while the netnographic methods analyzed activities online, thus communication through social media platforms as well as press coverage. The results of this study indicate that there is a strong interdependence between the digital and physical fashion week, where the digital do not have an obvious position of power because it is dependent on the physical presence. Fashion week has evolved into a phenomenon conducted physically, with the aim of reaching a digital audience through the creation of spectacular on-site moments being shared online. This points to a complex power relationship between the two. Therefore, the value of physical presence remains strong in a post-pandemic setting of fashion week in regards to marketing communication. In terms of Copenhagen, the emerging fashion capital, the translation of the physical presence to the digital realm becomes even more important as it promotes its fashion week to a global audience. It enables CPHFW to communicate elements of differentiation digitally, thus strengthening the attractiveness of the physical presence.

Way-Finding: A New Approach to Studying Digital Communications

Glade, William Daniel 01 June 2019 (has links)
This work further develops the way-finding model first proposed by Pearson and Kosicki (2017) which examines the flow of information in the digital age. Way-finding systems are online systems that help individuals find information—i.e. social media, search engines, email, etc. Using a grounded theory methodology, this new framework was explored in greater detail. Way-finding theory was created using the context of the elaboration likelihood model, gatekeeping theory, algorithmic gatekeepers, and the existence of the filter bubble phenomenon. This study establishes the three basic pillars of way-finding theory: the user’s mindset when accessing way-finding systems, the perception of how popular way-finding systems function, and the perception of the information personalization process—particularly regarding algorithmic gatekeepers and their roles in creating the filter bubble phenomenon. These pillars and the relationships that exist between each constitute way-finding theory.

The Mother Domain: A Mediated Model of Maternal Gatekeepers and Depressed Fathers Among Newlyweds with Children

Thomas, Clare R 01 July 2019 (has links)
Paternal depression is an understudied topic and research connecting it to maternal gatekeeping is still in its infancy. Research has found that the marriage relationship can be associated with both depression and maternal gatekeeping. This study focuses on how these three areas are related. A subsample of the CREATE project was used including 216 couples, or 432 married parents. Two separate SEM mediational models were tested to examine father depression as a predictor of maternal gatekeeping, with marital instability as the mediator in one model and partner connectedness as the mediator in the other model. Both parent reports were used for maternal gatekeeping, marital instability, and partner connectedness. According to results, no direct association between father depression and maternal gatekeeping was found. Marital instability did not act as an effective mediator between father depression and maternal gatekeeping. However, mother reports of partner connectedness did have significant indirect effects on father depression and maternal gatekeeping. Implications suggest that therapists and researchers should examine father depression from a more wholistic family perspective. Future research should include longitudinal analyses to better understand the nature of the relationship between father depression and maternal gatekeeping.

Streamingtjänster och plattformsbevakning : En studie om musiklivets nya portvakt i en tid av streamad musik

Grunditz, Philip January 2023 (has links)
This paper examines how streaming services, with a particular focus on Spotify, have influenced music consumption through the implementation of algorithmically and humanly curated playlists and recommendation features. By placing the role of streaming services in a historical context, this paper explores streaming services as an extension of previous gatekeeping functions in the music industry. The paper examines how curated playlists and recommendations affect music consumption and the individual listener’s ability to discover new music. The result suggest that streaming services’ use of algorithmically and humanly curated playlists and recommendation functions constitute gatekeeping mechanisms. Due to the monopoly status of streaming services in society, this has an impact on what music is listened to and disseminated in society. Streaming services have also contributed to an increasingly more personalised music curation that differs from the governing mechanisms that previously controlled popular music. This partly contradicts the stated ambitions of streaming services to provide listeners with a means of discovering new music. The controlling functions of streaming services have in turn affected music creators who distribute their music on the platform. In what follows, it is explained how music creators have become increasingly aware of algorithmic features, leading to an adaptation of both the musical content and the music packaging to benefit from algorithmic advantages.
