Renaud, Luc 11 1900 (has links)
These factors allow the industry to dominate in the power struggle that plays out when the operating conditions for a new destination are being negotiated. The purpose of this research project is to highlight the socio-spatial dynamics inherent to the power relations between stakeholders in cruise tourism in the space of the Caribbean. We use the case study of the creation of a cruise enclave at Harvest Caye in South Belize to explore the territorialization processes that result when a new destination is established. To do this, we have developed a conceptual framework that is based, first of all, on the idea of the production of a cruise tourism space considering the neoliberal mechanisms of space production when a new enclave is established. The framework then focuses on the processes of territorialization that have transformed South Belize as a consequence of the territorial deployment of this kind of tourism in the lived space of the receiving communities. Our results are based on content analysis, participant observation and 42 semi-structured interviews, and show that the power relations that initially favor the cruise tourism industry can be countered, allowing lived space actors to take charge of territorialization processes in the context of the imposition of a cruise tourism space. The processes of territorialization that emerged when the cruise tourism space and the lived space met are evidence of strategic actions the different stakeholders have taken simultaneously—those related to the industry’s attempt at territorial appropriation and those associated with local stakeholders’ various resistance strategies, especially those evolving in the ecotourism industry. Nevertheless, we have witnessed, directly or indirectly, adaptation and cooperation on both sides that have eroded the conflictual vision of the territorial dynamics that often characterize the implementation of cruise tourism. Finally, we suggest that there is a phase of territorialization that runs parallel to cruise tourism and that is linked to the dynamics of territorial appropriation brought about by the real estate industry that has been exacerbated as the enclave island was established.

The gatekeepers of Moroccan cultural heritage : Amazigh women and the status quo

Macdonald, Madisson January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to determine the role of Amazigh/Berber women in maintaining and preserving the cultural heritage of their people through carpet weaving, as well as how this tradition contributes to gender norms and tourism in rural Morocco. The research method consisted of conducting semi-structured interviews and a literature review of intangible cultural heritage preservation, traditional gender norms in rural areas, and nomadic tourism theories. Analysis of the interviews concluded that Amazigh women keep their traditional culture alive through carpet weaving, and they are simultaneously valued and marginalized within their society. The necessity and pressure placed upon them leads to issues related to gender equality and girls’ rights/accessibility to a quality education in the modern context. Though in a constant state of change and shifting with time, the nomadic lifestyle and traditional Berber carpet weaving are still participated in today and nevertheless hold deep significance for those who partake in these activities. Traditional mentalities regarding gender norms remain intact, although they are challenged more frequently. Women’s weavings are critical in preserving Amazigh culture and symbolize a heritage identity in an overt manner, making women central to the Berber story and Berber heritage.

The Swedish Island of Gotland is well-known for being prosperous in cultural  and natural values, as well as for its attractiveness as a touristic destination that draws local and international visitors to its myriad of cultural activities, offerings and establishments. For those reasons, Region Gotland has created comprehensive plans aimed at achieving goals related to exalting the image of the island as place for sustainable tourism and the promotion of culture. However, it is important to identify possible problematics that may arise during the implementation of such plans, and additionally it is important to compare and analyze the directives of the Region against what cultural actors and artists perceive in their day-to-day activities. Therefore, based on the existing literature, the collected data, and the identified themes in this research, a model that seeks to incorporate concepts related to the Promotion of Culture, Culturally Sustainable Enterprises and Cultural Tourism will be presented as a solution to tackle the problems and issues that cultural destinations such as Gotland might face.

The Local Hub : En fysisk framtid för varumärken.

Stone, Alice January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis project I investigate how to approach ”the retail apocalypse” as an interior architect. My aim is to show how commercial spaces and physical stores will still be important in the future, despite internet shopping and the climate crisis, as places we will visit to experience things, socialize and where businesses meet with their costumers physically.    Today we are constantly approached by brands and their brand aesthetics while walking through commercial areas. Logos, graphic material and specifik interior for just that brand. In their aim to reach brand recognition from their costumers the brand looks almost the same in all their physical stores. In this thesis project I present a strategy where I don’t see the goal for brands to be brand recognition. Instead I’m working with the idea that brands (small or big) could benefit from adapting their brand to the specifik locality they are situated in. In order to try this out I have done a case study on one commercial area affected by closing stores and too few visitors, a suburban center in the southern part of Stockholm- Hökarängen’s centre.     It is a strategy with a design program that strengthens both the brands and the identity of the place and sees our suburban center not as doomed but as a part of the future. It brings hope for a future where retail is an adaption to the locality, as a vivid part of the local community.
