A study of certain aspects of the Mount Coke Missionary Institution

Walker, James Andrew January 1955 (has links)
In searching for information concerning the chain of stations that William Shaw established from the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony towards Natal, I found that I had to consult many books. Many sources of information have recently come to light and this had to be analysed as well. In this work much had to be included that did not directly refer to Mount Coke, but it is relevant in that it affected the history of the Mission, and the effect of the Mission on the community as a whole. When histories of all the stations are written the incidents should show up in the right perspective.

Ironické mýty a rozbité obrazy: Reflexe povstání roku 1798 v irském románu a dramatu dvacátého století / Ironic Myths and Broken Images: Reflections of the 1798 Rebellion in Twentieth-Century Irish Fiction and Drama

Markus, Radvan January 2012 (has links)
The 1798 Irish rebellion together with the preceding decade is justly regarded as a watershed event in the forming of Irish national identity. Therefore it is not surprising that it has inspired numerous, and often conflicting, interpretations in both historiography and literature. This study concentrates on both English- and Irish-language historical novels and plays written about the rebellion in the course of the twentieth century, especially after the year 1916. Attention is drawn to the interpretations of the event contained in these literary works, comparing them to the various views of 1798 as they have evolved in Irish historiography. As the rebellion, especially from the 1970s onward, has been increasingly seen in the light of the later conflict in Northern Ireland, this connection has an important place in the analysis. On the theoretical level, the thesis draws from the findings of Hayden White, who has famously questioned the border between historiographical and fictional treatments of historical events. At the same time, this relativism is complemented by selected features of the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur, who highlighted the inevitable ethical questions connected to representations of history. In accordance with the theoretical preliminaries, the study explores the relative value of...

Ranger, Pierre 03 December 2009 (has links)
>My doctoral thesis looked at the representations of France in nationalist Ireland from 1879 until 1921. My argument is centred on the concept of a “mythe français” developed in most part in the 1840s. This myth imposed the image of France as an enemy of England, and thus an ally of Ireland and of oppressed nationalities. This approach introduces a new understanding of Irish nationalist relations with France and her myth; a relationship that influenced the definition of a nationalist ideology and the set of representations that looked at France and her images, used in nationalist rhetoric through the nineteenth century, as a model as well as a source of inspiration and pride. This allowed Irish nationalists, in particular separatists, to build a positive image for their demands, one that would not solely rely on an ancestral struggle against England. I have shown that such was the case with Arthur Griffith, founder of the Sinn Féin movement and inspired by the Franco-Irish experience of Maud Gonne, a virulent Irish activist. I have also argued that the “mythe français” had a strong impact on Irish nationalist politics. I focused on Charles Stewart Parnell’s and John Redmond’s “French” policy during the Land War and the 1890s, on the intense rhetorical battle between parnellites and anti-parnellites after the death of Parnell, and on pro- and anti-ally debates during the First World War.

A transmissão do legado camoniano no século XIX : o caso Ferdinand Denis

Barbosa, Rafael Souza January 2017 (has links)

Earlier career of Alexander Runciman and the influences that shaped his style

Macmillan, Duncan January 1973 (has links)
Alexander Runciman was in his mid-thirties before he adopted the monumental style of history painting on which his reputation has always been held to rest. What may be called the formative part of his career was therefore unusually extended. This thesis is a study of his development during this time, its background, and the sources from which derived his ideas on painting. This part of his life culminated in the monumental paintings that he did for Sir James Clerk of Penicuik in 1772 and the related work in the Cowgate Chapel, Edinburgh. These were the most important of all his works and were unique in eighteenth century painting. In them he combined the grand style that he had learned during the four years that he spent in Rome, with the native Scottish tradition of decorative painting in which he had been trained. The thesis therefore falls into three parts. The first (Chaps.1-7) deals with his life and background in Edinburgh; the second (Chaps.8-15) with his four years in Rome; and the third (Chaps.16-18) with the works that he carried out on his return to Edinburgh. In the first part attention is given in Chapters 1 to 3 to the men of the older generation from whom he may have learnt not only his style, but also his ambitions as a painter. Chapters 4 and 5 deal with the circles in which he moved among his own contemporaries, and the last two chapters in this part with his own and his younger brother. John's work in Edinburgh before they left for Rome in 1767. In the second part the first three chapters(S-10) cover the brothers' stay in Rome up to John's death late in 1768, or early in 1769. Following this event Alexander became determined to succeed, not merely as a landscape and decorative painter, but in monumental history painting. Chapter 11 is a discussion of the work of Gavin Hamilton and of James Barry, the two painters who influenced him most at this time. This discussion is extended in Appendix D which deals more fully with the work of Gavin Hamilton. Chapters 12-14 are an account of Runciman's first works in the new manner, with particular attention to his proposals for the decoration of Penicuik House. Chapter 15 deals with his relationship to Henry Fuseli at the end of his Roman stay. The last three chapters give an account of the circumstances in which he finally carried out his work at Penicuik, and of the pictures themselves. As they were destroyed by fire in 1899 Chapter 18 and part of Chapter 19 are devoted to a reconstruction of their appearance. The thesis concludes with a discussion of his work in the Cowgate Chapel. The part of this which survives is all that is left of his monumental work.
