Tomasi, Greice 11 December 2006 (has links)

O objetivo da presente pesquisa é o de inserir o autor nos círculos de debate e organização de resistência ao crescente aumento da opressão política e social, explorando fontes até então trabalhadas de modo incipiente, especialmente na relação que estabelecem entre si - imprensa, literatura e fontes oficiais / Abstract: Exploring the literary and political works of Sol Plaatje - South African writer, journalist and politician - it is my intention to research the impacts of a legislation that, starting from 1902, focused on controlling the native social and political participation in the South African Union, intensifying the segregationist character of the recently built national state. Beyond the political and literary works of Plaatje, my analysis also covers official sources - particularly a series of reports produced by commissions that were created to study the South African native, establishing thus the means to restrict native participation in South African politics. In the imbrication of these sources - literature, political writing, press and oficial sources - my aim is to reveal the organization of political and social resistance to the segregation policies / Doutorado / Historia Social / Doutora em História

Sir John A. Macdonald’s influence on the development of Canadian Indigenous Policy, 1844-1876

Taekema, Sarah 05 June 2020 (has links)
John A. Macdonald was not only Canada’s first Prime Minister; he played a significant role in framing much of Canada’s early “Indian policy” including legislation that was incorporated into the Indian Act (1876) which is still in effect today. Despite his central role, in all the voluminous analyses of Macdonald’s life and career, there is no in-depth scholarly study of Macdonald’s Indian policies or how his ideas about Indigenous people or race were formed. In this thesis, I examine Macdonald’s early personal context, how he may have developed his ideas about Indigenous people, the development of his Indigenous policies, and the local contingencies that shaped the rolling out of this legislative framework including the Gradual Civilization Act (1857) and the Gradual Enfranchisement Act (1869). / Graduate

Candela Jiménez, Emilio Iván 17 June 2013 (has links)

Reading history in the present: Sol Plaatje's Mhudi as an allegory of the 1913 Natives' Land Act

Thwane, Boitsheko Seboba Thato January 2017 (has links)
Submitted in the partial fulfilment for the degree of Master of Arts to the Department of African Literature University of the Witwatersrand, 2017 / Sol Plaatje’s novel Mhudi revisits prominent events detailing the relationship between the various clans that occupied the South African Landscape in the 1800’s. This story is a reflection of the conflict that arises between the different groups, how it is overcome and prospects of a new harmonious beginning. Plaatje writes his novel in the light of the occurrences in South Africa following the 1913 Natives Land Act. Plaatje uses various elements of culture and literary aesthetics to pose Mhudi as an allegory of the 1913 Natives Land Act. Literature is a carrier of culture and knowledge that can be used as a credible source to assess the past, the present and the future. Plaatje uses a story of love to elucidate how love conquers evil, the story of land and the knowledge and cultural significance it holds. Through this he highlights the wisdom that lies in the knowledge and application of culture through reverence. / XL2018

A History of Fort Duchesne, Utah, and the Role of its First Commanding Officer, Frederick W. Benteen

Huetter, Robert A. 01 January 1990 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the events that occurred during the first five months of Fort Duchesne, Utah, between August and December 1886. The primary focus is on Frederick William Benteen, one of the heroes who fought and survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The three Ute tribes--Uintah, White River, and Uncompahgne--are also discussed as they pertain to Fort Duchesne.A difficulty arose the first day a site was chosen at Fort Duchesne. Surprisingly, it did not involve the Indians, but the post commander. The central problem is what caused the long delay in building the fort. This study presents several possible theories as to why troops were still billeted in tents during the winter months of December and January. These include Major Benteen's inexperience as a construction engineer commander and his insatiable drinking habit he had acquired.

Chava Shapiro : a woman before her time

Caruso, Naomi January 1991 (has links)
This is a study of Chava Shapiro, a woman writer, born in 1876 in the Ukraine, who died in 1943 in Nazi Czechoslovakia. It describes her conventional Hasidic upbringing, her successful rebellion against it and her subsequent studies in Switzerland which led to a career in Hebrew journalism. It follows her return to Russia in 1914, her escape to Czechoslovakia after the pogroms of 1919 and 24 years later her tragic end in Terezin. / Dominating the study is the well-known Hebrew writer, Reuven Brainin, 1862-1939, with whom Chava Shapiro fell in love and who exerted an extraordinary influence on her life. / Using original, never before published materials from the Jewish Public Library Archives in Montreal, the study seeks to define the woman as a feminist and a Hebrew writer.
