Lygia Fagundes Telles : imaginário e a escritura do duploLamas, Berenice Sica January 2002 (has links)

Neste trabalho,
propomos a expressão função deserto para conceituar e sintetizar estes desertos poéticos

attention because of the frequency with which it appears, and especially because of the
issues that it moves: the desert. Projecting it onto the historical and cultural background
of Portugal, we see it’s role of contrasting refutation in relation with the sea. Guided by
poets Carlos de Oliveira, Luís Miguel Nava and António Ramos Rosa, we found that
the desert constitutes an imagetic and even conceptual “obsession” in modern Portugese
poetry, because it can not be understood only in its referential sense, but readable even
when this word is not printed on paper. So, more than just chase it while signifier, it’s
important to observe images and writing processes of dissections or defections from the
known, attempting to the fact that these poetic deserts do not work only with negative
sign: they represent the power of multiplicity; trade channels and passages; openness to
others (subjects and world and language settings); and a claiming for freedom. In this
paper, we propose the expression função deserto (desert function) to conceptualize and
synthesize these poetic deserts that, in Portuguese modernity, become power, much
more than exclusion

Rayonnement de la poétique d'Otomar Krejca en Belgique francophone / Influence of Otomar Krejca's Aesthetics in French-Speaking BelgiumFlock, Sarah Sylvie 03 March 2011 (has links)

/ The thesis focuses on Czech theatre from first avant-garde to second avant-garde; mainly it is focusing on Otomar Krejča’s theatre and its relationship with Belgian theatre within the second Czech avant-garde theatre to the end of the Normalization.
Krejča worked an intensive part of his artistic life in Belgium. His Belgian theatrical activity can be divided into two distinct periods. The first one was coinciding with the foundation of his “Theatre Beyond the Gate” (Divadlo za branou) in Prague in 1965 and took place in the Belgian National Theatre in Brussels. Those years were squaring with Czechoslovakian destalinization and were particularly productive in the artistic field. In Brussels Krejča directed four plays: in 1965, Hamlet, in 1966, The Seagull, in 1970, Three Sisters, in 1978, Romeo and Juliet. The first three plays occurred before the Normalization and his departure in specific exile. The last one marked the beginning of his second period in Belgium, closely bound to Louvain-la-Neuve city. The two following Krejča’s productions were first created for the Festival d’Avignon: in 1978, Waiting for Godot and Lorenzaccio in 1979, before being performed at Atelier théâtral Jean Vilar in Louvain-La-Neuve. The three following plays were the last of Krejča’s Belgian works: Three Sisters in 1980, A. Schnitzler’s The Green Cockatoo in 1981 and Dostoevsky’s The Possessed adapted by Krejča himself in 1982.

In Belgium, the reception of his plays was mitigated. Duality between critics can be explained by Krejča’s new regard on plays, by Krejča’s use of dramaturgy. Krejča’s productions in Belgium were innovating because through dramaturgy they paved the way for something new :it was the end of a romantic Hamlet in the Shakespearian tradition and the end of Pitoëff’s aesthetic in Chechov’s productions.

Krejča’s work of art, impregnated by Czech tradition theatre of avant-garde, influenced his Belgian collaborators. Krejča was influenced by leaders in Czech first avant-garde theatre such as Burian, Frejka, theatrical theory of Honzl and Hilar’s theatre conception. When Krejča started to work in Belgium, the country was undergoing a theatrical revolution. At the end of the 1960s, French-speaking Belgium lived at the rhythm of its first avant-garde in staging. According to me, this fact is the main explanation to Krejča’s significance in French-speaking Belgium. Thanks to Krejča’s Belgian productions, a part of the first Czech theatrical avant-garde and the second Czech theatrical avant-garde penetrated in Belgium.

All of Krejča’s concepts (human beings, ethic of responsibility, importance of dramaturgy, personal appropriation of Stanislavski’s approach) slowly instilled French-speaking Belgian theatrical life. Sure an evident mark of continuity of his aesthetic cannot be seen in the long time, nevertheless Krejča’s influence was considerable and briefly materialized in many fields. It is obviously still vivid in the way some actors play, feel and teach theatre.

Season songs : a song cycle for voice and orchestraMitchell, Mark Howard January 1991 (has links)
Season Songs is a song cycle for mezzo-soprano (or tenor) and medium sized orchestra (a perfoming version for voice and piano is appended). There are four songs and an orchestral prelude. The poems are by various authors and provide the programmatic elements of the cycle in that each poem is set in a different season of the year and time of day: winter/morning, spring/afternoon, summer/evening, and autumn/night respectively. The title of the prelude sets it just before dawn. The music of the prelude and the last song is closely related both motivically and tonally, thus reinforcing the cyclical nature of the work.
The accompanying commentary seeks to explain the compositional processes and aesthetic principles which guided the creation of Season Songs. The music explores nonfunctional
tonality, in that means other than traditional tonic-dominant (i.e., V-I) relationships are sought by which to create a sense of forward propelled harmonic motion. This sense of harmonic "trajectory", in conjunction with appropriate rhythmic proportions, is held to be one of the most important factors contributing toward the sense of departure and return, tension and resolution in the music. The main means used toward this end is a four-note source cell which governs much of the harmonic and motivic activity in the work, from the most local level of leading motives of individual songs to the broadest level of key relationships among songs. The harmonic manifestation of the source cell promotes root movement by major thirds and minor seconds on the local as well as broad levels. Sonorities associated with traditional tonality, such as open fifths in the bass and major or minor triads, are common, although the contexts in which they are heard are usually non-traditional. The metric pulse is usually distinctly articulated and readily intelligible, although changes in metre are frequent in most of the songs.
The text setting aspires to a directness of expression. The words will be intelligible in performance and the music reflects and magnifies the emotional content of the the text. While there are several levels on which the music can be appreciated, over-obscurity is avoided, as a rule, especially in the composition of the musical surface. / Arts, Faculty of / Music, School of / Graduate

The Disordered Era: Grotesque Modernism in Russian Literature, 1903 – 1939Hooyman, Benjamin January 2023 (has links)
This dissertation argues that Russia’s confrontation with modernity generated a series of sociocultural paradigm crises that gave rise to a modernist grotesque aesthetic tradition, uniting over forty years of artistic production into a coherent literary movement. While close reading the work of Fyodor Sologub (The Petty Demon [Мелкий бес]), Andrei Bely (Petersburg [Петербург]), Evgenii Zamyatin (At World’s End [На куличках]), and Velimir Khlebnikov (“The Crane” [Журавль]), I argue that prerevolutionary modernist writers utilized grotesque modes of representation to depict a world where the former cornerstones of pre-modern Russian identity are fracturing under the pressures of modernity. In contrast to extant scholarship, I argue the 1917 Revolution is not a fundamental break in Russia’s experience of the crisis of modernity, but an extension, and an exacerbation of it.
Though discourses of Russian identity formation will be rapidly recodified around the Soviet project, the same underlying grotesque aesthetic devices used by pre-revolutionary authors are taken up by a new generation of Soviet-era modernists. Mikhail Zoshchenko’s parody in Michel Sinyagin (Мишель Синягин) elicits skepticism about yesterday’s unenlightened masses becoming today’s new Tolstoys. Andrei Platonov’s anomalous depictions of the Russian periphery in his Juvenile Sea (Ювенильное море) are still inhabited by monsters, too far from Soviet nodes of power to be assimilated into the national ideological project. And Konstantin Vaginov (in the novel Goat Song [Козлиная песнь]) and Evgenii Shvarts (in the play The Shadow [Тень]) capture the prevalence of superfluous intellectuals with ruptured psyches, frustrated by their unsuccessful attempts to adapt to the new Soviet reality.

Mexico is the Latin American country that presents the largest number of works and the oldest tradition of compositions for this instrument, since the first Latin American concerto for cello and orchestra was written by Ricardo Castro, around 1890. Given the poor dissemination of this legacy, the objective of this thesis is to reveal the historical importance, singularity, heterogeneity and artistic value of the Mexican cello repertoire, through the musicological analysis of a selection of representative works written by the most significant composers of each generation, as well as the observation of the aesthetic evolution that they describe, from the post-romanticism at the end of the 19th century to the avant-garde of the 20th century. The interdisciplinary methodology used covers the fields of conscious listening, thought after perception, sociopolitical and cultural study of Mexico, musical analysis appropriate to each language, interpretation of works and assessment for the performance of each work in relation to its particular characteristic and the place it occupies in the author's work. In each of the three chapters, we contrast works for cello by two composers belonging to the same sociopolitical moment. Those of Ricardo Castro (1864-1906) and Manuel M. Ponce (1882-1948) are pioneers of their genre in Latin America and different representations of the search process for Mexican identity. Julián Carrillo (1875 -1956) and Carlos Chávez (1899-1978) provide two different visions of the path that Mexican music had to follow from the historical moment of the 1910 Revolution. Manuel Enríquez (1926-1994) and Mario Lavista (1943-2021) share the cosmopolitan ideal of the avant-garde of the second half of the 20th century. The research carried out shows that the selected works contribute significantly to the development of the cello as a solo instrument and that their authors enrich the musical languages of the 20th century with individuality and idiosyncrasy. / Lacruz Zorita, MD.
In the beginning of the 20th century, Herbert Berliner and Roméo Beaudry were implicated in the Canadian phonographic industry and had an important impact on the emergence of a French-Canadian popular music field. The technical and artistic expertise of these two actors notably participated in the field's transition from a heterogeneous to a more structured state. Through the Compo Company, founded in 1918, they oriented the establishment of a French-Canadian music in a significant way. Using Pierre Bourdieu's field sociology, this study will determine and analyze the interactions and factors involved in the field structuration with a special interest for Berliner and Beaudry's contribution for the period 1918-1932.

An ecclesiological analysis of the Church of God and Saints of Christ and its impact on Bulhoek massacreNgwanya, Richman Mzuxolile 08 1900 (has links)
A tragic massacre in May 1921, commonly referred to as the Bulhoek Massacre, was associated with the ecclesiology of the Church of God and Saints of Christ, founded by Enoch Mgijima. If it were not for the theology of eschatology that this church adhered to, the so-called Bulhoek Massacre would not have happened. The theology of eschatology which Mgijima was focussing on caused the ecclesiology of the amaSirayeli to be the victims of the circumstances.
Dulles defines ecclesiology as the church in the process of self actualisation. There is self understanding of worshippers. In the case of the Church of God and Saints of Christ, such self-understanding caused the Bulhoek Massacre. It is said that when people fervently believe in an Ultimate Being, whether such belief is a construction in their minds or a reality, then those people will be willing to defend their belief and die for, if it needs to be.
For such a believer, it is because of the hope for a better life in the future that they are willing to even defy earthly authorities. When that believer follows a voice of the supernatural, which is revealed only to him and sounds much louder, much clearer and more authoritative than human voices, it is then that he cannot be void. Such an authoritative voice may be transmitted either through ancestors, known as the living dead, or directly from the Supreme Being. In the case of the said church, it is both.
Secondly, an ecclesiology of the Church of God and Saints of Christ should be understood in the light of their mother church in America under the leadership of Crowdy the founder. Such ecclesiology should also be understood against the religious backdrop of the African Initiated Churches (AIC). These two factors, the mother church in America and the religion of the African Initiated Churches, will be the main components that drive this thesis, and thus illuminate the spark in the said church.
Owing to the proliferation of the African Initiated Churches in the continent of Africa, there is a wide speculation that Africa, of the 21st century, will be the centre of World Christianity. Whether this is just a dream or a reality remains to be realized. But the fact remains that, these churches continue to be a religious force that forms part of the church history in Africa.
While this thesis will constantly be referring to the 1921 events, an ecclesiology of the said church is a present phenomenon because the church survived the massacre and is still active today.
The two researchers, Robert Edgar from Los Angeles University in the USA, and Martin Mandew from the University of Natal, completed their doctoral theses on the Bulhoek Massacre. Edgar was researching on, The Fifth Seal. Enoch Mgijima, The amaSirayeli Bulhoek Massacre, 1921. Mandew concentrated on, War, Memory and Salvation, The Bulhoek Massacre and the Construction of a Contextual Soteriology.
Since both researchers come from a distance, and are unable to speak the language of the people they were researching, there were of obviously unfilled gaps in between. As mentioned about cultural differences, therefore, knowing the language of the worshippers makes a big difference. There needs some analysis of idiomatic expressions, enunciated and other formal and informal expressions that tend to be important during communication. However, I acknowledge their research programme but I will go further from their product.
This thesis examines the ecclesiology of this church and then relates it to the massacre where they were killed for their own beliefs.
