Janacek's Diary of One Who Vanished: Background and Preparation for PerformanceParks, David W., Parks, David W. January 1982 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to document the results of the research required to conscientiously prepare a performance of The Diary of One Who Vanished, by Leos Janacek.
Too often, vocalists and instrumentalists alike find themselves in a performance not knowing the bare essentials needed to produce an acceptable performance. Research is necessary in the following areas: life history of the composer as well as historical and political conditions of his surroundings, compositional style of the composer and specific tools which he used in the composition of the music to be performed and, if the composition is vocal, a thorough investigation of the text. Only after a complete study in these areas can a performance of any music be intelligently given.

Mario Pinto Serva e as fronteiras do campo educacional (1915 - 1928) /Simão, Alexandre. January 2017 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This research aims to understand the itinerary of the journalist Mario Pinto Serva in the educational field of the São Paulo State between 1910 and 1920. To do so, it was intended to analyze the articles published by Serva in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo (1915 - 1928), as well as his collection of articles gathered in his book A Educação Nacional (1924). In the periodicals analyzed were mapped the main themes that configure Mario Pinto Serva's educational thinking, along with information regarding the story of his family, his graduation and professional performance, friendships, his participation on politics and strategies used by him to access debates and spaces attended by educators of that time, with emphasis on the Nationalist League of São Paulo and the events of the Brazilian Association of Education. The approach of these aspects took into account the conjuncture that involved the exercise of intellectual activity in the First Brazilian Republic (1889 - 1930). By exploiting this fertile ground, could be established the hypothesis that assures that the presence of Mario Pinto Serva among the educational actors was articulated with his participation in institutions that are not specific of education, but that, in different ways, configured the educational field of the São Paulo State. In addition to the analyzes presented in this research, it also sought to raise questions that may foment further researches about intellectuals and disputes over the construction of professional identities in the educational field. / Mestre

Anti-Christian Elements in Thomas Hardy's NovelsAlexander, B. J. 05 1900 (has links)
A commonplace among Hardy critics is that as a young man Hardy lost his Christian faith and entered a serious religious disillusionment. The mainstream of Hardy criticism has followed the general consensus that Hardy suffered keenly as a result of this experience and looked back on Christianity with poignant nostalgia. If his view is not purely nostalgic, traditional criticism has insisted, then it seems at worst only ambivalent. The purpose of this dissertation is to argue that Hardy's attitude toward Christianity as revealed in his novels is not only not ambiguous, but, as a matter of fact, is specifically anti-Christian, often to the point of vehemence; that his treatment of various components of Christianity in his novels is aggressively anti-Christian; and that the feeling is so pronounced that the novels may be read as anti-Christian propagandistic tracts. This dissertation evaluates Hardy's cynical view of and attack on Christianity by examining his treatment of its symbols, such as its architecture, and its practitioners, both clergy and laity. Furthermore, since Hardy's attitude is shown not only in specific comments and particular situations but also in general tone, attention is directed toward the pervasive irony with which Hardy regards the entire panoply of Christianity. Although a few short stories and poems considered particularly relevant receive passing attention, this study is restricted primarily to a consideration of Hardy's fourteen novels. Moreover, this study notes the lack of continuity of development or logical intensification of Hardy's attitude toward Christianity during the twenty-four years spanning the time between the publication of his first novel, Desperate Remedies, in 1871 and the publication of his last novel, Jude the Obscure, in 1895.

Totiusque ecclesiae suae sanctae; a comparison of the ecclesiologies of St. Augustine and Hans KungSullivan, Edward J. 01 January 1971 (has links)
This paper attempts to compare the ecc1esio1ogies of the fourth century Bishop of Hippo and the controversial twentieth century theo1ogian. In doing so, a study is made of each writer independently in order to extract his conceptual models of the Church. Special significance is given to the names each attributed to the Church and the consequences of these names as they pass from an analogical to an ecc1esio1ogica1 sphere. A study is also made of the functions of office within the Church with respect to the fulfillment of specific ministries. Here the two divide, Augustine meets the Donatist challenge by condemning disunity, while urging contemporary Christians to true internal reform, reminding them of the necessity of grace available only through the Church to heal their natures. Special attention is given to two specific topics from Augustine: the use of force to compel at least outward conformity, and the belief in the inability of man to do any good outside the Body of Christ. Kung diverges in another way in different times. He emphasizes the communal nature of the Church as those called by God and, on earth, represented by the ministry of ecclesiological office, including Ecumenical Councils and the Papacy. The Church, according to Kung, is the Kingdom of God moving towards manifestation and must reflect its apocalyptic nature by its witness and proclamation of the Word. He finds fault with the teaching office of the Church for its adherence to verbal propositions and concludes advocating a non-propositional attachment to kerygma.
The contrast between the writers is sharply emphasized by a comparison of their positions on certain points, including authority, the Papacy and finally the four marks or distinguishing characteristics of the Church. The attitudes towards the first two differ markedly on some points, but a consistency of approach towards the four marks of the Church, with the exception of the Apostolic characteristic, can be seen. Several conclusions are propounded but the essence of each lies in the attitude of each writer towards human nature. Augustine finds the same wholly depraved without grace, which is given through the Word and human collaboration. Kung finds a response to divine call sufficient and is less concerned with limits on freedom in the name of love of neighbor. The interplay between these two schools of thought has punctuated Church history in the same manner as it does human history.
