Black snow by Michael Smetanin : an analysis : and original compositionsO'Connor, Jennifer January 2004 (has links)
Black Snow, an orchestral work composed by Michael Smetanin in 1987, was named after the book Black Snow by Mikhael Bulgakov. Newspaper articles, reviews and the literature researched, all comment on Smetanin’s style and on the influences that shaped that style. The aggressive and confrontational style of much of Smetanin’s music can be attributed partly to his love of rock music and jazz and partly to his mentor in the Netherlands, Louis Andriessen. The same sources quote other composers who also influenced Smetanin’s style. Three works in particular are named, that is, Trans by Stockhausen, Keqrops by Xenakis and De Tijd by Andriessen. It was decided, in the light of previous investigations into Smetanin’s music, to take one of these composers, namely Stockhausen and his work Trans, and discover how much Smetanin was influenced by this composer and this particular work. Trans was chosen because the similarities with Black Snow are less obvious. All aspects of Black Snow were examined - namely the harmony, rhythms, the important textures, serial/mathematical techniques, orchestration, the dramatic program, how the instruments are played - and then compared with Trans for similarities and differences. The results of the analytical investigation show that, while the internal organisation of the two works is very different, there are significant similarities between the two works in most of these areas. Serial/mathematical techniques could only be demonstrated in one area, and this is only conjecture.

Santos, Aline Peterson dos January 2016 (has links)
This M.A. thesis discusses the protagonists in Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange and the films A Clockwork Orange and Vinyl, directed by Stanley Kubrick and Andy Warhol, respectively, comparing how such characters represent the individual in society. The thesis draws on the theories by Joseph Campbell, Antonio Candido, and Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes, concerning the characters, and by Italo Calvino, concerning Lightness. The three works are analyzed aiming at the understanding of the peculiarities present in each one of the narratives, as well as the trajectory of the protagonist in the three narratives, until they reach the end. The concepts of good and evil, maintained under conceptions established in our society, are threatened when the protagonist is subjected to the Ludovico Technique, treatment that has the objective of reducing the quantity of prisoners in jails. For that, it eliminates the power of choice of the individual, who happens to be able to practice acts of kindness only, since all exposure to evil brings him to pain and to unbearable discomfort.

A ênfase da análise empreendida está nos elementos referentes às autobiografias ficcionais e à metaficção, que dão ensejo também ao estudo sobre o foco narrativo e o tempo / This thesis presents a study about the novels A life and Zeno’s conscience and some sparse chapters, i.e. “Un contratto”, “Le confessioni del vegliardo”, “Umbertino”, “Il mio ozio” and “Il vecchione” from the Italian author Italo Svevo. Based on the analysis of the texts, the work shows how these narratives are examples of literary narcissism, in which the employed artifice to do Literature becomes the narrated theme itself. Furthermore, the study shows a clear evolution of Svevo's work in relation to the critic artifact and the consciousness of the creative work, since this thesis examines three different moments of his work and demonstrates an undeniable maturity of these issues. The emphasis of the undertaken analysis relies on the constituents relating to the fictional autobiographies and to the metafiction, giving rise also to the study of narrative focus and time

A Production Analysis of the Musical, Peter PanWilson, Wheelice 08 1900 (has links)
This investigation is concerned with the analysis of a production of Peter Pan, a large-scale musical play, which was presented at Dallas Repertory Theatre in February of 1975. This analysis is intended to be both an educative discussion of the experimental nature of the show and a practical guide to the production of a typical musical play by a non-professional company. The most outstanding elements examined include the following: (1) casting a teen-age boy, instead of an adult, in the title role; (2) casting children in all children's roles, and adults in all adult roles; (3) modification of the script and score to implement the casting of children in key roles; (4) the utilization of a short motion picture to simulate the flying of actors onstage.
