Renger-Berka, Peggy 19 May 2016 (has links) (PDF)

Crisis in the Eastern Nile Basin: an Examination of the Challenges to Egyptian Hydro-Political Hegemomy and Potential Domestic Solutions

Bergonia, Alexandra 01 January 2013 (has links)
The countries of the Nile Basin are on a collision course that could result in disastrous military action to determine control of the region’s main water source. In the wake of the Arab Spring, the Egyptian government has lost much of the regional clout that allowed it to maintain it’s ‘lion’s share’ of the Nile as outlined by the 1959 agreement. Population and economic growth in upstream countries, specifically Ethiopia, have resulted in intensified calls for a more equitable water-sharing agreement. Just weeks after Mubarak stepped down, Ethiopia unveiled plans to build the Grand Renaissance Dam. The GRD will significantly reduce the water that reaches Egypt’s borders but will significantly increase Ethiopia’s hydroelectric power and irrigation potential. Egypt’s population and agriculture sector rely heavily on the maintenance of this status quo; the country also faces the mounting effects of climate change, rising food prices and immense population growth. In order to avoid a severe water crisis, Egypt must be proactive and look to improve efficiency within its own borders. This paper will examine the inadequacies of Egypt’s agricultural and irrigation sectors. It will then use examples from Mexico’s successful irrigation reform and advocate a shift of control to local Water User Associations. Other domestic and basin-wide efforts to increase water-use efficiency will also be examined.

Sofaya in paint: representations of human dignity in the work of Sekoto, Xaba and Mthethwa

Senong, Doctor Kolodi January 2016 (has links)
A Research Report to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master in Arts (Fine Art), 2016 / The core of the study for this MA examines expressions and understandings of human dignity/seriti, in the work of Gerard Sekoto (1913-1993), Nhlanhla Xaba (1960-2003), Zwelethu Mthethwa (b.1960) and in my own paintings. As such, the study probes, analyses and questions the intentions, writings on and readings of these artists’ work, as well as appropriate and build on their visual and representational languages. Underlying the research is the idea of black consciousness, and quest for an ideology of a more human and equal South Africa. The subject of my paintings evolves around seriti in Sofaya, an informal settlement in the northeast of Johannesburg, which is not located on official maps of the city. I set out this study with the argument, that all human beings retain seriti as a quality that bestows respectability and equality to them. The practical component is comprised of paintings in oil. The work tries to capture a personal and spiritual quality that I call seriti through explorations of colour, paint mark, and texture. I am curious about the concept of seriti as seen through everyday experiences. I am moved by the imaginative ability of both Sekoto and Xaba’s images that weave communal and socio-political narratives to portray, positively, people’s capacity to outlive harsh and conflicting living conditions. As a result of these influences, I employ dynamic brushwork, poetic colours, and expressive forms in an attempt to portray the realities, agency, and the place of Sofaya. / MT2017

I'll be your mirror: reflections on doubling and the processing of aggression in the post(modern) fairy tales of Hesse & Winterson

Unknown Date (has links)
Traditional fairy tales represent some of the oldest and most archetypal forms of literature. However, as humanity rapidly evolves, the genre and content of traditional fairy tales still operates as a prevalent socializing agent that fails to promote pluralism. Instead, traditional fairy tales illustrate and uphold limited gender roles and expectations. This paper examines Hermann Hesse's role as a pioneer in a now burgeoning movement of fairy tale revisions that blur boundaries between fantasy and reality by introducing specific, everyday locations, countries, and individuals coupled with a copious use of the double. This formula draws the reader into the tale via the uncanny and prompts a reevaluation of especially violent historical moments and issues that affect all within a society. Hesse's work within this new tradition of revisions of beloved fairy tales, as well as his creation of literary fairy tales, has significantly influenced the work of key postmodern feminist fairy tale revisionists like Jeanette Winterson. / by Brittany K. Continuidade entre estética e investigação na teoria da arte deweyana: a educação entre arte e ciência, valor e método, ou entre o ideal e o real / Continuity in research and aesthetics within Deweys art theory education between art and science, or value and method: the ideal and the real

Dorsa, Ana Daniele de Godoy 08 November 2013 (has links)
The present theoretical-philosophical research argues descriptively about the aesthetic theory of the american philosopher John Dewey, in regards to the principle of continuity\" within Dewey\'s philosophical system as a whole. Bearing that in mind, the continuity of the aesthetic and the scientific were focused, as well as value broadly conceived and knowledge viewed as a scientific approach, and as the essential feature of Dewey\'s aesthetic theory. Thus, through the observation of the philosophers general assumptions, it has been verified that his aesthetics is necessarily established in continuity with experimental methods of natural sciences, which consolidates a few of the essential features propositions of his art theory: Dewey\'s supreme belief in the contingent of the process, which is continuous, cumulative, and broadly conceived as nature itself, implies that the ideal must cease to be contemplative and thus become instrumental and operative, which means it should become an experimental method in virtue of the environment. Therefore: Dewey\'s aesthetics must be primarily understood within its investigative character, that is, in its continuity to science; Deweys rejection of traditional metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophical dualisms prevents any classical interpretation of \"transcendental\" or \"transcendent\". Therefore art or aesthetics, as acts of expression or culture, should be continuous to a diversity of rhythms, but never dualistic or hierarchical in the sense of any ideal in pursuit of the Absolute. According to Dewey\'s aesthetics, value resides precisely in the pace of the process itself, such as between tension and harmony, ordinary and extraordinary, real and ideal and so on. From this active articulation between all the aspects of continuity an expressive act would emerge, as the realm of a singular imaginative experience, and of culture as a whole, through communication.

Heroes of New Russia / Hrdinové nové Rusi

Shidlovskiy, Kirill January 2018 (has links)
Diplomová práce “Hrdinové nové Rusi: Analýza archetypů postav v díle Alexeje Balabanova“ představuje život a dílo jednoho z nejpozoruhodnějších režisérů nové ruské kinematografie Alexeje Balabanova.

Through a study of his biography, gathered from documents of his family’s personal collection and his works – specially Coivara (1920), A Amazonia Mysteriosa (1925), Elsa e Helena (1927), Vertigem (1934) e De Pai a Filho (1954) – we aim to reveal polyphonic dimensions of discourse between his historical subject, his fictional work and his own historical period. Our approach is essentially Bakhtinian which allows Gastão Cruls to be a great historiographic object of study considering that he composes a historical personality as the member of an extensive spectrum of social relationships and practices. Metaphorically, we could draw a comparison between him and an intersection point: intertwined with a remarkable visibility in Brazilian intellectual elite, also intersected by plethora of multiple interests and interdisciplinary actor in publishing segments. We observed that the overlapping of his personal, historical and fictitious spheres revealed historical features of the medical training during Rio de Janeiro’s Belle Époque: doctors and patient’s daily routines, human suffering in clinical conditions according to Medicine of his time, the national discussions concerning the future of Brazil and even the inception of psychoanalysis into Brazilian Medicine. Those are the kind of historical issues discussed in his fictitious works / A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar Gastão Cruls (1888-1959), autor de contos e romances de teor médico na primeira metade do século XX.

Konrath, Germana January 2017 (has links)
This research approaches the updating of utopian impulses through the poetic trajectory of the Belgian-Mexican artist Francis Alÿs and his intertwining with the notion of the right to the city developed by Henri Lefebvre. More specifically, it questions the potential for reflection and transformation that this artistic production presents in relation to our way of thinking and occupying public spaces, both from a time and spatial point of view. The empirical object is Francis Alÿs oeuvre carried out in large western cities, mostly Latin American, between the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first. These actions are discussed facing the theoretical contributions from authors who are contemporary to Francis Alÿs: Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Jacques Rancière, Michel de Certeau and Néstor García Canclini. The concepts that underlie all the research, however, such as public space, right to the city and utopian impulse, go back to two thinkers from the early twentieth century: Henri Lefebvre and Ernst Bloch. The dialogue between theory and practice, seeking in artistic works the updating of the concepts brought by the cited authors and aiming to identify the reverberation of these practices in theory, forms the backbone of this master’s dissertation.

Through oral statements, consultation to official documents, the press, and bibliography, I built what I could rescue of the history of the institution. The IIES-FFCL/PP was required, in the decade of 1950, assisting the interest of the middle class for its children's illustration and also local and central electoral interests. It was conquered in a moment in that the country lived the developmental politic, for which the university was an important icon. It formed teachers for the secondary teaching, the public university and, mainly, for the private university that began expanding, starting from middles of the decade of 1960. Center of researches, principally the regional research, the productions were took in analyze and interference in the regional space, through extension, and are important reference sources. It suffered difficulties with the repression of the military regime, implanted in 1964. It formed critical and militant citizens, many of these were teachers in the own institution, and they still work nowadays in UNESP. When it was grouped to the others IIES, for creation of UNESP, in 1976, it suffered with the extinction of 200 of the public vacancies that were offered annually, for teachers' formation, exactly in a historical moment of expansion of the Segundo Grau, when the public school was lacking qualified...
