For over four hundred years historians and theologians have been unable to come to a consensus as to where Johann Arndt (1555-1621) fits on the spectrum of orthodoxy in the Lutheran church, what age he best represented, and how he should be understood. Arndt has been credited with reviving medieval mysticism, as being a subversive innovator within the Lutheran church, and as being the father of Pietism. All of this confusion seems to come from the variegated nature of his work. Arndt was willing and able to borrow from a variety of traditions as he sought to revive the church of the Reformation on the eve of the Thirty Years’ War. This work is an investigation into the private world of Arndt through his correspondence as he wrote to individuals with varying theological temperaments. In a sense this thesis follows the pioneering work of Friedrich Arndt, who attempted in 1838 to investigate Arndt’s self-understanding on the basis of his correspondence; his work, however, was severely limited by the fact that only ten letters were known at the time. The Verzeichnis der gedruckten Briefe deutscher Autoren des 17. Jahrhunderts published in 2002 listed twenty-three known letters of Arndt. For my research and using the footnotes and appendices of secondary literature on Arndt and with help from the Forschungsbibliothek in Gotha, I have collected fifty-two letters written by Arndt. This work is the first to treat the letters exhaustively and proposes to present a fuller biographical picture of Arndt and to explore his self-understanding as a prophet of spiritual renewal in the Lutheran church.

Changing in variance or volatility with time can be modeled as deterministic by using autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (ARCH) type models, or as stochastic by using stochastic volatility (SV) models. This study compares these two kinds of models which are estimated on Turkish / USA exchange rate data. First, a GARCH(1,1) model is fitted to the data by using the package E-views and then a Bayesian estimation procedure is used for estimating an appropriate SV model with the help of Ox code. In order to compare these models, the LR test statistic calculated for non-nested hypotheses is obtained.

Depuis l’origine du christianisme, l’unité de l’Église fondée sur la foi, le culte et la communion hiérarchique avec le successeur de Pierre est confrontée à des dissensions doctrinales ou disciplinaires qui entraînent parfois des ruptures institutionnelles. Aujourd’hui, les catholiques peinent à parler d’une seule voix sur des thèmes essentiels, tandis que le dialogue œcuménique tarde à restaurer l’unité parfaite entre chrétiens. Ces deux problématiques sont abordées à la lumière de l’histoire. A travers un long parcours chronologique qui mène le lecteur de l’Antiquité à l’époque contemporaine, cette étude évoque les solutions doctrinales, canoniques et pastorales mises en œuvre au fil des siècles pour résoudre les crises qui ont surgi dans l’Église, puis répond à trois questions en lien avec l’actualité. Que faire pour éviter de nouvelles ruptures dans l’Église ? Comment réagir face aux situations conflictuelles ? Quel chemin emprunter pour réconcilier les chrétiens ? Si la promotion de l’unité réclame audace et courage, elle ne saurait être envisagée en dehors de la vérité révélée par le Christ et de la tradition. / Ever since the inception of Christianity, the Church’s unity based on faith, worship and hierarchical communion with Peter’s successor has been faced with doctrinal or disciplinary dissents which entail institutional severances at times. Today, Catholics have difficulty speaking with one voice about essential questions, while at the same time the ecumenical dialogue is late inrestoring perfect unity between Christians. Those two sets of problems are tackled here in the light of history. Leading the reader on a long chronological path from Antiquity to modern times, this study examines the doctrinal, canonical and pastoral solutions applied along the centuries in order to deal with the crises arising inside the Church ; then it answers three questions in connection with present circumstances : What should be done to avoid new severances within the Church? How to react in front of conflictual situations? What way should be followed to reconcile Christians? While it takes courage and boldness to promote unity, the latter cannot be contemplated outside the truth revealed by Christ and tradition.

Just as packet switched networks constituted a major breakthrough in our perception of the information exchange in computer networks so have the decoupling properties of publish/subscribe systems revolutionized the way we look at networking in the context of large scale distributed systems. The decoupling of the components of publish/subscribe systems in time, space and synchronization has created an appealing platform for the asynchronous information exchange among anonymous information producers and consumers. Moreover, the content-based nature of publish/subscribe systems provides a great degree of flexibility and expressiveness as far as construction of data flows is considered. However, a number of challenges and not yet addressed issued still exists in the area of the publish/subscribe systems. One active area of research is directed toward the problem of the efficient content delivery in the content-based publish/subscribe networks. Routing of the information based on the information itself, instead of the explicit source and destination addresses poses challenges as far as efficiency and processing times are concerned. Simultaneously, due to their decoupled nature, publish/subscribe systems introduce new challenges with respect to issues related to dependability and fail-awareness. This thesis seeks to advance the field of research in both directions. First it shows the design and implementation of routing algorithms based on the end-to-end systems design principle. Proposed routing algorithms obsolete the need to perform content-based routing within the publish/subscribe network, pushing this task to the edge of the system. Moreover, this thesis presents a fail-aware approach towards construction of the content-based publish/subscribe system along with its application to the creation of the soft state publish/subscribe system. A soft state publish/subscribe system exposes the self stabilizing behavior as far as transient timing, link and node failures are concerned. The result of this thesis is a family of the XSiena content-based publish/subscribe systems, implementing the proposed concepts and algorithms. The family of the XSiena content-based publish/subscribe systems has been a subject to rigorous evaluation, which confirms the claims made in this thesis.

Besonders die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Islam hat sich in den letzten Jahren drastisch verschärft und führt immer wieder zu heftigen verbalen oder gewalttätigen Angriffen. Das Ringen um Verständigung bzw. Abgrenzung und die damit verbundenen Konflikte und Diskussionen sind jedoch nicht neu, sondern ziehen sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Geschichte. Interessant aus heutiger Zeit ist deshalb die Erschließung der Anfangsdebatte am Entstehungsort des Islams. Auf welche Weise und mit welchen Mitteln setzten sich die unmittelbar von der arabischen Herrschaft betroffenen Christen mit der neuen Religion auseinander? Wie entwickelten sich die Argumentationsmuster in den Anfängen des Religionsdiskurses? Welche hauptsächlichen religiösen Unterschiede wurden wahrgenommen und thematisiert? Anhand einiger Texte des Johannes Damaskenos und des Theodor Abū Qurra soll diesen Fragen auf den Grund gegangen werden. / Religion is an important component of her being for many people. Particularly the discussion with Islam has drastically intensified during the last years and leads over and over again to fierce verbal or violent attacks. Nevertheless, the struggle around notification or demarcation and the conflicts linked with it and discussions are not new, but stretch like a red thread through the history. Therefore, interesting from today's time is the development of the beginning debate in the place of origin of Islam. In which manner and with which means did the Christians immediately affected by the Arabian rule argue with the new religion? How did the argumentation patterns develop in the beginnings of the religious discourse? Which principal religious differences were perceived and picked out as a central theme? With the help of some texts of Johannes Damaskenos and Theodor Abū Qurra should become to these questions on the reason gone.

Im Rahmen der EFRE-geförderten Projekte wurde in den Jahren 2011–2014 für elf sächsische Hochschulbibliotheken eine auf der Open-Source-Software Vufind basierende ‚Recherche-Oberfläche‘ entwickelt. Mit der Einbindung der Nutzerdienste der Bibliotheksmanagementsysteme, der Abbildung hierarchischer Mehrbändigkeit und der Integration von Normdaten hatte ein Proof-of-Concept schon früh die Leistungsfähigkeit des Open Source-Systems belegt. Jetzt, am Ende der Projektlaufzeit, können wir die anfänglichen Prognosen bestätigen und sagen: ‚finc‘– so der Name des neuen Suchsystems – ist ein großer Erfolg (vgl. BIS 2012, H. 2, S. 72–76).

The ordinary least squares (OLS) is one of the most widely used methods for modelling the functional relationship between variables. However, this estimation procedure counts on some assumptions and the violation of these assumptions may lead to nonrobust estimates. In this study, the simple linear regression model is investigated for conditions in which the distribution of the error terms is Generalised Logistic. Some robust and nonparametric methods such as modified maximum likelihood (MML), least absolute deviations (LAD), Winsorized least squares, least trimmed squares (LTS), Theil and weighted Theil are compared via computer simulation. In order to evaluate the estimator performance, mean, variance, bias, mean square error (MSE) and relative mean square error (RMSE) are computed.

Contrary to previous work on development which considered poor local communities a threat to the natural environment, current views emphasise the role of the community in bringing about participation, conservation and consequently Sustainable Development.
