Houde, Caroline 20 April 2018 (has links)
This dissertation reviews imaginary representations in three Spanish American novels dedicated to the figure of Christopher Colombus and his travel project: Alejo Carpentier’s The Harp and the Shadow (1979), Abel Posse’s The Dogs of Paradise (1983) and Augusto Roa Bastos’s Vigil of the Admiral (1992). Pertaining to the reflections on the New Historical Novel in Spanish America and the notion of postmodernism, my work aims to offer an original way to approach these works, one which is more centred on demonstrating the particular task of choosing Colombus at that specific time of History, that is, near the symbolic year 1992 and the “Discovery of America” 500 years’ commemoration. From a sociocritical approach —based on works of Pierre Bourdieu, Pierre V. Zima, Claude Duchet, and Edmond Cros— my analysis demonstrates how Columbus and his enterprise of discovery act as catalysts on the three writers, who reproduce their own version of the Admiral’s travels and life, with the intention of transposing the tales of their individual existences in the plot, of speculating about writing fiction in Hispanic America, and of reinventing original historiographies. My analytical orientation is due to the desire for a larger dissection of the three texts that constitute my corpus, which had been put aside by researchers, due to a consensus on defining the common characteristics of the “new” phenomena of the historical novel at the end of twentieth century and on underlining the postmodern angle of those fictions.

Explicit computation of the Abel-Jacobi map and its inverse / Calcul explicite de l'application d'Abel-Jacobi et de son inverse

Labrande, Hugo 14 November 2016 (has links)
One can compute it with a number of operations which is quasi-linear in the target precision, i.e. in time O(M(P) log P). Its inverse is given by Weierstrass's p-function, which can be written as a function of theta, an important function in number theory. The natural algorithm for evaluating theta requires O(M(P) sqrt(P)) operations, but some values (the theta-constants) can be computed in O(M(P) log P) operations by exploiting the links with the arithmetico-geometric mean (AGM). In this manuscript, we generalize this algorithm in order to compute theta in O(M(P) log P). We give a function F which has similar properties to the AGM. As with the algorithm for theta-constants, we can then use Newton's method to compute the value of theta. We implemented this algorithm, which is faster than the naive method for precisions larger than 300,000 decimal digits. We then study the generalization of this algorithm in higher genus, and in particular how to generalize the F function. In genus 2, we managed to prove that the same method leads to a O(M(P) log P) algorithm for theta; the same complexity applies to the Abel-Jacobi map. This algorithm is faster than the naive method for precisions smaller than in genus 1, of about 3,000 decimal digits. We also outline a way one could reach the same complexity in any genus. Finally, we study a new algorithm which computes an isogeny of elliptic curves with given kernel. This algorithm uses the Abel-Jacobi map because it is easy to evaluate the isogeny on the complex torus; this algorithm may be generalizable to higher genera

On some damage processes in risk and epidemic theories

Gathy, Maude 14 September 2010 (has links)

Perpetrators & Possibilities: Holocaust Diaries, Resistance, and the Crisis of Imagination

Tahvonen, Eryk Emil 03 August 2006 (has links)
This thesis examines the way genocide leaves marks in the writings of targeted people. It posits not only that these marks exist, but also that they indicate a type of psychological resistance. By focusing on the ways Holocaust diarists depicted Nazi perpetrators, and by concentrating on the ways language was used to distance the victim from the perpetrator, it is possible to see how Jewish diarists were engaged in alternate and subtle, but nevertheless important, forms of resistance to genocide. The thesis suggest this resistance on the part of victims is similar in many ways to well-known distancing mechanisms employed by perpetrators and that this evidence points to a “crisis of imagination” – for victims and perpetrators alike – in which the capability to envision negation and death, and to identify with the “Other” is detrimental to self-preservation.

The information front: the Canadian Army, public relations, and war news during the Second World War

Balzer, Timothy John 02 March 2009 (has links)
War news and public relations (PR) was a critical consideration for the Canadian Army during the Second World War. The Canadian Army developed its PR apparatus from nothing to an efficient publicity machine by war’s end, despite a series of growing pains. Canadian Military Headquarters in London appointed the first PR Officer, William Abel, in January 1940. PR services overseas grew along with the size of the army. The early days were marked by lack of coordination and often jurisdictional and personality conflicts between Abel and the other PR Officers and organizations. The 19 August 1942 Dieppe raid was the low point for both the accuracy of war news and Canadian PR involvement because Lord Mountbatten’s Combined Operations Headquarters minimized Canadian PR’s involvement in planning. This resulted in early portrayals of the raid as successful and the British censored a more honest explanation by the Canadian Army. The Sicilian and Italian campaigns provided a learning experience for the PR units. In Sicily, the news coverage of the Canadians was a public success, but PR had trouble with their allies in gaining national recognition and representation. Additionally, the question of correspondents’ priorities and delays getting to the front and transportation difficulties angered the press. Many of these problems continued in Italy until the appointment of Richard Malone, who enjoyed support from the politicians, press, and military. Applying the Mediterranean experience and participating in Allied publicity planning contributed to the excellence of Canadian PR during the Northwest Europe Campaign. PR maintained the confidence of the press while still controlling the correspondents. The army also largely overcame the temptation to censor bad news although this sometimes embarrassed Ottawa. Allied regulations sanitized war news preventing the reporting of the more disturbing aspects of war. Through censorship, the army exercised a great deal of control over the news media, yet this hegemony was incomplete because of need to keep the press friendly. Although a large sceptical minority remained, most Canadians considered their war news to be accurate. In sum, Canadian Army PR was generally successful, portraying the army positively and attracting media coverage.

[pt] CAIM COMO PARADIGMA DE VIOLÊNCIA EM GN 4,1-16 / [en] CAIN AS VIOLENCE PARADIGM IN GENESIS 4,1–16

LEANDRO EDMAR NANDI 30 September 2016 (has links)
[en] Just a watchful eye to realize the impulse to violence that acts as a destructive force in mankind and in society from all ages. Violating and corrupting seem to be constant traits in the social life, from their most expressive aspects to the most subtle ones. This paper enters into Genesis text, Gn 4,1-16, seeking to understand Cain s drama in which he cannot live fraternity with his brother. Cain is present throughout generations and in popular belief, as an archetypal presence of the conflict of the human being with his equal. This character brings in himself the symbolism of the violent forces and of its consequences when he allows these forces dominate over the actions. Therefore, his image permeates time in his fate, wandering vagrant in every person confronted with its limits and impulses. Getting to know the Biblical accounts and their meanings allows deepen the human history and their relations with the sacred and the profane. Seek for the significant roots of these Biblical accounts is to contribute with a meaningful channel capable of bringing, to the contemporary s man, the sacred wisdom of the ancient Israel, on its paradigms and paradoxes. Thereby, the investigation aim is to realize what are the driving forces that cause that violent reaction in Cain s character, elucidating, thus, aspects of the violence present in the human being.

Geschwisterrivalitäten im Buch Genesis : Eine literaturwissenschaftliche Analyse ausgewählter Geschwisterrivalitäten / Sibling rivalries in Genesis : a literary analysis of selected sibling rivalries

Martella, Immanuel Matthäus 11 1900 (has links)
This applies in particular to rivalry between brothers. Frequent episodes of reversals and other catalysts ignite conflicts which continually endanger family continuity. Although sibling rivalry has been extensively addressed by the academic research, the analysis of interconnected and recurrent literary motifs among the stories has not yet been sufficiently explored. Therefore, the present study investigates the literary connections among three principal rivalries: Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau and Joseph and his brothers. This includes, in particular, the analysis of those texts which deal with the origin, escalation and resolution of these conflicts. As a result of this study, lexical and thematic motifs, as well as motifs of plot development among the stories are worked out. These motifs present a tightly interwoven narrative network among the stories. They reveal a narrative arc of suspense which ranges from the primeval fratricide to fraternal forgiveness, teetering continually on the brink of fratricide / Genesis is a book of family histories which are marked throughout by conflict.
