Ten days of Taglit : How emotions work on a Birthright trip in Israel

Buisman, Sacha January 2017 (has links)
Taglit Birthright is an organization that provides free ten-day diaspora-heritage trips to Israel for young Jewish adults between 18 and 26 years old. Taglit is Hebrew for discovery and this is the ambition of the organization: providing young Jewish people with an opportunity to discover their socio-cultural Jewish heritage. Taglit Birthright aims at ensuring the future of the Jewish people by strengthening the Jewish identity via an educational trip and pursues to foster the understanding and identification of the participants with Israel, its people and the culture. Since its foundation in 1999, over 500.000 young people have partaken in a Birthright trip.                                                     This case-study presents empirical data from one particular Taglit Birthright trip to Israel. The objective of this study is to provide insights in how emotions shaped a Taglit group and which emotions are constructed during a ten-day Taglit trip. Theoretically, this study is informed by the work of the post-colonial and feminist scholar Ahmed (2004 and 2013). Emotions are considered as ‘doing things’: collectives, such as a Taglit Birthright group, are constructed through shared emotions. Methodologically, emotional reflexivity will be applied in this research. Related to this positioning, hermeneutic circle informs this research in order to emphasize how temporal distance results in ‘understanding in multiple ways’. Besides, hermeneutic circle embraces reflexivity as it stresses the importance of self-understanding and pre-understanding as informing our understanding. The presented findings are based on participant observation during a Taglit Birthright trip in the summer of 2016. The empirical data consists of audio recordings of group activities, recorded personal reflections and diary entries. Based on this data, the following conclusions are drawn: strong feelings of connectiveness to and with the group derive from an intense ten-day trip in which embodied experiences, embedded in emotions, are shared. Sharing activities, such as circulizing (forming a circle with a large group of people), are tools which provoke strong feelings of ‘being part of something’. On a personal level, it can be argued that expressed emotions, which create feelings of connectiveness within a group, do not necessarily need to be personally felt simultaneously. When personal feelings do not align with the collectively expressed emotions, feelings of ‘not fitting in’ might arise. This study wishes to contribute to the ‘emotionalization of tourism’, which aims at foregrounding the role of emotions in tourism encounters and social relations.

Reginaldo Pereira de Moraes 01 December 2012 (has links)
This dissertation researches the birthright in the Old Testament in light of the narratives of Esau and Jacob, particularly, the texts of Genesis 25.19-26, 25.27-34 and 27.1-45. For this, a design of bibliography was chosen under an exegetical perspective. Thus, a dialogue with psychology and anthropology is performed, from where it is perceived that theme is as present nowadays as it was in ancient times. It was also noted that, despite the conventions almost settled on the hegemony of the birthright in the Old Testament, there is no way of knowing which cultures have influenced others. Similarly, there were no biblical laws that could justify such thinking. But we can not say that the firstborn would not have his importance, after all there are many texts demonstrating such relevance. Still, from the exegeses made in three major pericopes analyzed, along with an approach, en passant, of other passages, one can present an argument in favor of a real story, in spite of several literary aspects that could be used in contrast. Such narratives are full of intra-family conflicts, which served to demonstrate the common practice of birthright in the Hebrew culture. Moreover, regarding the definition of Birthright, an application that included five dimensions is defended: spiritual (blessings had an almost magical connotation, it was very strong); religious (besides the fact that the firstborn was consecrated to God, he had the responsibility to take care of and lead the worship of the Lord); patrimonial (assets transferred to the children consisted of land and or dominions, notwithstanding the period of semi-nomadism and the constant transhumance); social (the leadership of the clan and its representation before the council of elders were part of the responsibilities of the firstborn); and also an existential dimension (the eldest son was responsible for perpetuating the name of his father, living as the continuity of the life of his predecessors).

Sionisty bez přesvědčení: Utváření imaginace a performance transnacionální přináležitosti / Zionist without Zeal: Imagination and Performance of Transnational Belonging

Pokorná, Anna January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation based on a fieldwork conducted among Czech Jewish youth during a ten-days educational touristic program Taglit-Birthright explores production of transnational space of mutual belonging. The transnational belonging to Jewish collective is produced through particular physical space of Israel through practice of tourism in collective constructed by the programme as a collective of common origin based on "blood ties". I examine participants' tourist bodily experience, performances, emotions and attitudes as a site of production and reproduction of transnational space using a concept of embodiment as ways in which the individual grasps the world around him/her and makes sense of it in ways that engage both body and mind. Transnational space created throughout the programme becomes socially constructed emotional category of "ahavat Israel", "love for Israel" that might conceal its political implications. Keywords: Transnationalism, diaspora, tourism, embodiment, Jewish youth, Taglit-Birthright, Czech Republic, Israel

Essays in immigration economics and political economy

Sajons, Jörg Christoph 20 February 2012 (has links)
This thesis revolves around two themes. The first is whether granting citizenship to immigrant children at birth affects their parents’ return migration decisions and integration into the host-country society. Evaluating the introduction of birthright citizenship in Germany in 2000, I show in chapter 1 that migrant families are less likely to return to their home countries if their children automatically obtain the German citizenship. Chapter 2 continues the analysis of the same reform and finds that it has different effects across integration dimensions. Finally, chapter 3 is dedicated to the second theme. It examines whether stating the profession of candidates in open-list elections influences voter satisfaction and voting behavior. The results of a field experiment conducted in Barcelona indicate that voters are more satisfied if they know the profession of the candidates and that candidates working in high-skill occupations enjoy an electoral advantage.

Nationalité et souveraineté / Nationality and sovereignty

Lepoutre, Jules 24 November 2018 (has links)
This work aims to review the relationship between nationality and sovereignty. The bond between these two legal notions has repeatedly expressed itself as an absolute power of the State to determine which individuals it considers to be its nationals. Accordingly, nationality is widely selected to exemplify a State’s power with a high (if not the highest) degree of liberty. However, does this sovereignty “dogma” in nationality law still reflect current positive law? To further contribute to the debate, this thesis needs to examine – through a study of French domestic law, European laws, and International law – both the scope of the State’s jurisdiction and the discretion of its power. Then, results show that nationality law, because ofhistorical developments and contemporary transformation, is no longer able to express itself as a sovereign power. The connexion of nationality with the territory, its integration in the field of human rights, and the growth of judicial review are altogether eroding and erasing the State’s freedom to grant, deny or revoke nationality.

Healing writes : restoring the authorial self through creative practice : and Birthright, a speculative fiction novel

Parv, Valerie January 2007 (has links)
Writing the speculative fiction novel, Birthright, and this accompanying exegesis, led me to challenge the validity of the disclaimer usually found in the front matter of most novels that the story is purely imaginary, bears no relationship to reality, with the characters not being inspired by anyone known or unknown to the author. For the first time in my career, I began to consider how writers including myself might frequently revisit themes and ideas which resonate with our lived experiences. I call this restorying, an unconscious process whereby aspects of one's life history are rewritten through one's creative work to achieve a more satisfactory result. Through personal contact, studying authors' accounts of their creative practices, and surveying current literature on narrative therapy, a case is made that, far from being generated purely from imagination, writers' creative choices are driven by an unconscious need to restory ourselves.

Geschwisterrivalitäten im Buch Genesis : Eine literaturwissenschaftliche Analyse ausgewählter Geschwisterrivalitäten / Sibling rivalries in Genesis : a literary analysis of selected sibling rivalries

Martella, Immanuel Matthäus 11 1900 (has links)
This applies in particular to rivalry between brothers. Frequent episodes of reversals and other catalysts ignite conflicts which continually endanger family continuity. Although sibling rivalry has been extensively addressed by the academic research, the analysis of interconnected and recurrent literary motifs among the stories has not yet been sufficiently explored. Therefore, the present study investigates the literary connections among three principal rivalries: Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau and Joseph and his brothers. This includes, in particular, the analysis of those texts which deal with the origin, escalation and resolution of these conflicts. As a result of this study, lexical and thematic motifs, as well as motifs of plot development among the stories are worked out. These motifs present a tightly interwoven narrative network among the stories. They reveal a narrative arc of suspense which ranges from the primeval fratricide to fraternal forgiveness, teetering continually on the brink of fratricide / Genesis is a book of family histories which are marked throughout by conflict.
