It's time to talk: a study of the experiences of people with mental health in the workplace

Pelletier, Shawn 27 September 2016 (has links)
In Canada mental health related concerns are estimated to cost the economy $20-$50 billion annually. 500,000 Canadian each week have to take time off of work because of a mental health disability. This study explores the experiences of people living with a mental health disability in the workplace. The goal is to provide an opportunity to highlight many of the obstacles they face every day. This study relies on qualitative methodologies, using semi-structured interviews to get a more detailed understanding of their experiences. This study not only highlights the perceptions, experience and challenges of people living with a mental health disability, it highlights coping strategies and suggestions for building mentally health workplaces. The participant’s personal narratives can help by providing a chance for a community to build and be used to challenge the stigma and discrimination associated with mental health. / October 2016

Instrument myopia and myopia progression in Hong Kong microscopists

Ting, Wai Ki January 2004 (has links)
People who work in occupations that involve intensive near work are thought to have a higher chance of developing myopia than other people. For example, microscopists in the United Kingdom have a higher prevalence of myopia than that of the general community. The prevalence of myopia in Hong Kong is extremely high (71 %) and Hong Kong Chinese people are particularly susceptible to myopia development and progression due to environmental factors. It is possible that this environmental susceptibility may lead to Hong Kong Chinese microscopists developing even greater levels of myopia. We found that the prevalence of myopia in Hong Kong microscopists (n=47, mean age=31 years) was higher than that of United Kingdom microscopists (87 % c.f. 71 %) and similar aged people within the general Hong Kong population (87 % c.f. 71 %; −4.45 D c.f. -3.00 D). However, while in most microscopists (83 % of 36 microscopists followed for a two-year period) the amount of myopia and vitreous chamber depth increased over a two year monitoring period (−0.11 D, 0.06 mm), the increase was not clinically significant. We hypothesised that the slower myopia progression rate in Hong Kong microscopists may be the result of their older average age (Hong Kong microscopists: 31.7 years c.f. United Kingdom microscopists: 29.7 years). When a person looks into a microscope, excessive accommodation occurs even though the microscope is designed to render the magnified image at optical infinity (zero accommodation and vergence demand). This over accommodation is called instrument myopia. It is possible that this over accommodation is linked to the myopia development and progression that occurs in users of these instruments. We found that instrument myopia remained consistent with different viewing conditions and microscope settings (inexperienced microscopists, n=20, mean age: 24.1 years, mean spherical refractive error: −2.83 D). The magnitude of instrument myopia was not correlated with either the age or refractive error of the microscope user, while it was lower in those users with greater experience (inexperienced microscopists: 1.03 D c.f. experienced microscopists: 0.43 D). As the Hong Kong microscopists (n=10, mean age: 31.2 years, mean spherical refractive error: −3.39 D) who partook in this study were experienced (6.3 years spent working in this field), this may have contributed to the lower myopia progression that was observed. Studies to determine the main contribution to the phenomena of instrument myopia were also conducted. Instrument myopia was not correlated with convergence when looking into microscope (r= −0.224, p=0.342), near phoria (r=0.351, p=0.129), AC/A ratio (r= −0.135, p=0.571), the convergence induced by the excessive accommodative response (r= −0.028, p=0.906), lag of accommodation (r=0.065, p=0.785) and tonic accommodation (r=0.142, p=0.551). We suggest that the main contribution to instrument myopia during microscopy is proximal accommodation due to the awareness of the closeness, caused by the height of the microscope (i.e. the distance between the viewer and the table where the microscope is placed), during microscopy. For example, we found that the magnitude of instrument myopia increased significantly (from 0.64 D to 1.16 D) when the height of the microscope decreased from 50 cm to 35 cm. In conclusion we have added, through direct observation, to the understanding of the characteristics of instrument myopia. Guidelines for new microscopists aimed at minimising the amount of instrument myopia that is experienced have been developed. This information might help to reduce the amount of myopia progression in commencing microscopists.

Model-based fault detection and control design - applied to a pneumatic Stewart-Gough platform

Grewal, Karmjit Singh January 2010 (has links)
The safety and functionality of engineering systems can be affected adversely by faults or wear in system components. Therefore, methods for detecting such faults/wear and ameliorating their effects to avoid system failure are important. Designing schemes for the detection and diagnosis of faults is becoming increasingly important in engineering due to the complexity of modern industrial systems and growing demands for quality, cost efficiency, reliability, and the safety issue. In safety/mission critical applications, fault detection can be combined with accommodation/reconfiguration (after a fault) to achieve fault tolerance allowing the system to complete or abort its function in a way that is sub-optimal but does achieve the design objective. This thesis discusses research carried-out on the development and validation of a model-based fault detection and isolation (FDI) system for a pneumatically actuated Stewart platform. The Stewart-Gough platform provides six degrees of freedom consisting of three translational and three rotational degrees of freedom (x, y, z, pitch, roll, & yaw). As these platforms can be fast acting (rapid motion) and can handle reasonable loads, they can become dangerous, especially when fault(s) in the platform mechanism, drivetrain or control system occur. Therefore, as a safety critical application it is imperative that fault tolerant schemes are applied in order to provide a safe working environment. The design concept of the FDI scheme for the full Stewart-Gough platform is first designed using a single cylinder set-up. This modular concept is adopted so that a robust fault tolerant control scheme can be designed basically off-line (i.e. not attached to the Stewart Gough platform). This approach is adopted as requirements are easier to understand using a single cylinder set-up. The modular design approach subdivides the whole system into smaller sections (modules) that can be independently created and then used in the complete Stewart-Gough platform. The main contributions of the work are that a pneumatically actuated Stewart-Gough platform has been designed, built, and commissioned. A mathematical model has been developed and has been validated against experimental results. Two control approaches have been designed and compared. A fundamental comparative study of parity equations and Kalman filter observer banks for fault detection in pneumatic actuators has been conducted. The parity equations and Kalman filter approaches have been extended to provide a combined fault detection scheme. The FDI and control schemes have been combined in a modular Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) scheme for a pneumatic cylinder. The resulting FTC scheme has been validated by experimentation and demonstrated on the single cylinder test rig. The FTC scheme has been extended to all 6 cylinders (and including fault management at top level) of Stewart-Gough platform. The FTC scheme has been validated by experimentation and demonstrated on the Stewart-Gough platform test rig.

Schönheit und Wert von Immobilien / Beauty and value: analysis of the connection existing in living accommodations

Küster, Nicole 21 March 2014 (has links) (PDF)
While buildings oft he last century corresponded to the Vitruvian triangle „Firmitas“ (stability), „Utilitas“ (appropriateness) as well as „Venustas“ (grace or beauty) still as of course, the latter principle of the beauty steps with modern living building too often in favour oft the purpose in the background. Many building companies are fixed on high building land prices as well as the necessity arising from it of the maximum utilization oft he property with at the same moment minimal investments in the building. In view of the fundamental economic as well as social importance of the appearance of living accomodations it ist he aim oft he present work to identify eventual correlations between the two factors „beauty oft he living accomodation“ and „value of the real estate“.

Apgyvendinimo įstaigų personalo kvalifikacijos tobulinimo vertinimas / Evaluation of personnel qualification improvement in accommodation institutions

Merkevičiūtė, Rima 06 September 2013 (has links)
Darbo problema: kaip apgyvendinimo įstaigose vyksta personalo kvalifikacijos tobulinimas? Darbo tikslas: įvertinti apgyvendinimo įstaigų personalo kvalifikacijos tobulinimą. Darbo objektas: personalo kvalifikacijos tobulinimo vertinimas. Darbo uždaviniai: 1. Pateikti turizmo sektoriaus sampratą išskiriant apgyvendinimo subsektoriaus reikšmę jame. 2. Išskirti personalo vaidmens esmę turizmo sektoriaus organizacijose, 3. Atskleisti personalo mokymo ir kvalifikacijos tobulinimo reikšmę organizacijai, 4. Nustatyti apgyvendinimo įstaigų personalo kvalifikacijos tobulinimą, išskiriant jo būtinumą. Darbo rezultatai ir išvados: 1. Pagal tarptautinio NACE klasifikatoriaus veiklas, turizmo sektorius skirstomas į dar smulkesnius sektorius (subsektorius): apgyvendinimo įmonės, sveikatingumo įmonės ir kelionių agentūros bei ekskursijų organizatoriai. Turizmo subsektoriai veikia vienas kitą, tokiu būdu konkuruodami tarpusavyje, tačiau diždžiausia turizmo sektoriaus pažanga pastebima plėtojant apgyvendinimo paslaugas. 2. 3. Personalo dėka įgyvendinama organizacijos... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Problem of the work: how personnel qualification improvement proceeds in accommodation institutions? Objective of the work: assession of personnel qualification improvement in accomodation institutions. Object of the work: evaluation of personnel qualification improvement. Tasks of the work: 1. To present the conception of tourism sector and highlight the value of accommodation subsector in it. 2. To highlight the essence of the personnel role in organizations of tourism sector. 3. To reveal personnel qualification improvement and training essence for the organization. 4. To ascertain perfection of personnel in accommodation institutions distinguishing its great necessity. Results and conclusions of the work: 1. According to the international NACE classification of activities, tourism sector is subdivided into even smaller sectors (sub-sectors): accommodation institutions, health and travel agencies and tour organizers. Subsectors of tourism interacts with each other, in this way have intercompetition, however, the biggest progress in tourism sector is noticable in developement of accommodation services. 2. The quality of services in tourism sector depends on the personnel in that sector. Organizations of tourism sector possitively effects country's economic growth, promotes exports and employment. This sector depends on the personnel of that sector (human resources) which is considered as a hardly achievable or even unachievable competitive advantage of such organizations... [to full text]

At home in one's habitus: the accommodation of communities of the good life

Soufi, Youcef 15 June 2010 (has links)
This thesis seeks to offer a particular perspective from which to understand and approach the claims of some social collectivities. By making use of the concept of the habitus as employed by Talal Asad, I introduce the category of communities of the good life, whose members dedicate their lives to ends achievable only by a conscious shaping of their subjectivity. I argue that in light of the exigencies for sustaining a commitment to such a life, current legal rights are insufficient to make these communities feel that they can fully fulfill their aspirations in liberal societies. This in turn makes the basis of social and political solidarity tenuous. Perhaps worse, I argue, the accommodation of groups can only be placated by establishing structures of domination through the creation of assimilative mechanisms. I therefore contend that modern liberal democratic societies should understand their political union not as one based on liberal rights but on a union for the fulfillment of the concrete ends sought by citizens. In arguing for this position, I also seek to respond to two objections. The first is that the heterogeneous nature of all groups makes any accommodation either impossible without privileging some over others or perhaps placing dissenters in a precarious situation. The second is that accommodations will result in the subversion of citizens' freedoms.

Reuse / Reuse

Mattsson, Linnéa January 2013 (has links)
This project consists of and is driven forwards by three forces: PART ONE is the Story Behind, the environmental and political part with problems like waste management, over-consumption, and extreme lack of student housing in the Stockholm region in spite of the politicians’ promises. SECOND PART is the Collecting of Waste that are at hand, showing how much MATERIALS, still fully usable, we just discard of and the investigation of these - with a little creativity and innovation finding strategies to use them in a NEW WAY in the context of architecture, questioning the perception of second-hand materials. AND THIRDLY - reaction! The practical part, a full-scale built proposal with which I tie together this project. As a response to our consumption-oriented society, I collected whatever thrown away material at hand right here on the architecture school. With this material and the strategies discovered, I constructed a small student dwelling on a forgotten and unused space on the architecture school’s roof, making a statement towards the disappointing development of the student housing situation.

Stavba v krajině - Winery / Architecture in Landscape - Winery

Voznicová, Denisa January 2016 (has links)
The proposed winery is located near the village Strachotín in South Moravia. Plot on which the proposal is located is surrounded by vineyards on the north and steeply slopes to the middle reservoir of the Nové Mlýny on the south. Part of the winery is in addition to the actual production, sales and wine tastings, a restaurant with accommodation and wellness. The idea of the proposal is based on the views of the surrounding countryside. The proposal is situated on the edge of the slope - even underground floor opens to the south and affords a view of the whole Palava - the water area and the Pavlov Hills.
