What protégés and mentors report helped or hindered the outcomes of mentoring relationships: an adapted critical incident technique study

Buydens, Sarah Louise 04 January 2017 (has links)
How to best conduct a mentoring relationship has been confounded by the lack of a consistent definition of “mentoring” and the scarcity of studies addressing how to achieve a positive outcome. This study contributes new, operationalized definitions of “mentoring,” “mentor,” and “protégé,” and a modified version of the Critical Incident Technique and the Enhanced Critical Incident Technique, called the Adapted Critical Incident Technique (ACIT), which is more consistent with a qualitative methodology. The researcher interviewed 18 self-described mentors and protégés to obtain 207 quotes about what critical behaviours helped or hindered mentoring relationship outcomes. Independent judges confirmed the placement of quotes into 13 categories of behaviours that helped mentors and protégés to reach the mentoring goals and 10 categories of behaviours that hindered the mentoring outcome. The findings contribute to an increased understanding of the foundation upon which mentors and protégés in all fields may potentially build better programs and training under the guise of mentorship. / Graduate / 2018-12-01

Thérapie par l’exercice et dystrophie facio-scapulo-humérale : étude contrôlée randomisée de 6 mois d’entraînement à domicile : précédée d’une étude histologique du potentiel régénératif musculaire dans deux modèles distincts de myopathies / Exercise therapy and facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy : a randomized, controlled trial of 6-month home-base : preceded by a histological study of muscle regenerative potential in two distinct models of myopathies

Bankolé, Sénakpon Landry Cyrille 27 October 2014 (has links)
En somme, ce programme d’entraînement mixte, supervisé et coaché à domicile a permis d’aboutir à des améliorations fonctionnelles, tissulaires et de qualité de vie, ce qui ouvre des perspectives d’application à d’autres types de myopathies / Although it is now accepted that physical activity (PA) is not deleterious in myopathies, including muscular dystrophies, there is very little evidence of relevance in the literature. This thesis has allowed to provide for the first time, confirmed evidence of safety and beneficial effects of exercise therapy in FSHD, through an integrative view of the potential benefits of such programs on functional, biological and quality of life. Two groups were randomly formed: control group (CG: 44 ± 10 years) and trained group (TG: 40 ± 13 years). After 6-month of adapted and home-based training, benefits have been reported particularly in terms of aerobic capacity (VO2pic, PMA), strength (MVC) followed by an increase in cross-sectional area (CSA) of muscle fibers, muscle function (muscle endurance, 6MWT) and fatigue experienced by patients. The lack of muscle damage (HES analysis & plasma CK values) and the strong tendency to improving the quality of life, support the idea that our training program is safe. Muscle biology also shows improvements in the activity of some oxidative enzymes (CS and CK). In short, this home-based mixed training program has allowed to achieve functional, tissue and quality of life improvements, which opens perspectives for application to other types of myopathies

Impact d'un programme d'activités physiques adaptées sur la qualité de vie et les caractéristiques physiologiques de personnes agées : utilisation d'un système de visioconférence collective / Effects of an APA program on the quality of life and on the physiological characteristics of the older adults : Evaluation of a videoconferencing system compared to traditional training

Bigot, Lucile 10 February 2017 (has links)
The main goals of this thesis were to determine the feasibility, the acceptability, and to evaluate the benefits brought by a multivariate home based APA program for older adults using a videoconferencing system.Forty-one participants aged between 67 and 80 years old were recruited and separated into three groups: an untrained control group, and two groups trained by videoconferencing or face-to-face programs. The APA program was provided during 4 months, with two sessions of one hour per week. In order to improve the quality of life and the physiological characteristics of the participants, resistance, balance and aerobic exercises were conducted during each session. In order to evaluate the effects induced by this program, the evaluation protocol was similar for the pre- and post-program tests. Quality of life, physical condition, balance, simple and dual walking-tasks and circadian rhythmicity (temperature, subjective sleepiness and fatigue, rest-activity cycle) were evaluated.Main results showed improvement of quality of life, of the leg extension power, of the maximal aerobic power and of the rest-activity cycle. The training did not affect significantly balance and walking abilities of the participants.Although benefits have been obtained for both trained groups, effects are globally more important and seem larger when using the traditional face-to-face program in comparison to the use of the novel videoconferencing program. Nevertheless, the benefits observed using the video-conferencing program demonstrate its relevance in older adults. This program could thus be suitable as a complement or in transition of traditional methods (i.e. face-to-face).

Specifika čtenářství u neslyšících dětí mladšího školního věku se zaměřením na problematiku upravovaných textů / Specific od Reading Ability of Young School Age Deaf Children with a View of Using Adapted Texts

Ptáčková, Klára January 2012 (has links)
Anotation TITLE: The Specific of Reading Ability of Young School Age Deaf Children - with a View of Using Adaptated Texts AUTHOR: Klára Ptáčková DEPARTMENT: Special Education SUPERVISOR: Doc. PhDr. Eva Souralová, Ph.D. This dissertation thesis is aimed at the reading ability of deaf children with a view of using adapted texts as a means of improving their reading competences. The thesis summarizes theoretical knowledge relating to a way of communicating and educating deaf pupils in connection with their reading ability, its specifics, development and difficulties. It is focused on adapted literary works, on the methodology of their creation and the different approaches to them. The research uses methods of quantitative analysis that contains systematic summary and evaluation of provided data in connection with the qualitative approach. By the method of text analysis were briefly demonstrated the principles of text modification for hearing children of young school age. In another part there was used an analysis of modified texts in light of their reading comprehension level (using of Mistrík's method). The qualitative approach part of research was aimed at description and defining of specific areas and process of adapted Czech literary works for the deaf in comparison with their original versions. Researching sensitive topics: Adjusting cultural probes to research and identify design spaces for sensitive HCI.

Jackson, Gregory Alexander January 2020 (has links)
Research tools to identify sensitive topics and thus new opportunities to design for have grown in popularity in the last twenty years within HCI, with many projects and areas to note. However, the research tools used are still underdeveloped (Crabtree, 2003), and many universal designs of the 20th century have failed to develop for more sensitive areas, bar the conventional young, non-disabled, white, cis-male (Clarkson, 2003). The topics discussed in the thesis are reviews and arguments for the use of an adapted cultural probe’s place to research sensitive topics, identify perhaps previously hidden “sensitive-HCI” (Waycott et al. 2015) design spaces. The focus is on the tools to gather data, and discover design opportunities, rather than the particular and actual findings from the study.

Caractérisation des troubles de l’équilibre et effets d’un programme d’activités physiques adaptées chez les personnes âgées obèses / Characterization of balance disorders and effects of a program of adapted physical activities in obese elderly people

Maktouf, Waël 05 February 2019 (has links)
It is well recognized that obesity and aging impair individuals balance and walking abilities. These alterations are potentially associated with greater difficulty in performing activities of daily life. However, the magnitude of the effects on functional abilities of the combination of aging and obesity, as observed in obese elderly, requires further investigations. Through this thesis work, we, first of all, showed that obesity presents an additional constraint to age throughout the process of stabilization and walking in elderly. This aggravates the functional limitations in the obese elderly in activities of daily life. Then, we reported that an adapted physical activities program based on balance, muscular reinforcement and mobility exercices optimize balance and walking abilities of obese elderly in extreme situations likely by developing their neuromuscular capacities in the lower limbs.

Brandsäkerhet ur hemtjänstens perspektiv : En enkätstudie med Sveriges hemtjänster

Hansson, Petter January 2021 (has links)
9 out of 10 fires in which people die occur in their homes, there. People in the age group 80 years or older are overrepresented in deaths caused by fire. The vision of the Swedish national strategy for strengthening fire protection for the individual is that "no one should die or be seriously injured as a result of fire". The sub-goal for the vision was that the number of fatalities and serious injuries in fires should decrease by one third between 2010 and 2020. When individuals live in their own homes, so-called ordinary housing, the building legislation presupposes that people themselves put themselves in safety in the event of a fire. As this is difficult for the elderly with disabilities, MSB has published an example of a checklist for municipalities to use as a template for risk inventory for individuals. The purpose of the report is to investigate how municipal and private home services work with fire protection work. But even if the view of fire protection in the home care service is different depending on where in the country the respondent is active and what form of work he has. The method chosen for the work was a questionnaire study and a literature study. The questionnaire was divided into different tracks, depending on whether the respondent worked out with users or did not work out with users. The goal was that all unit heads in Sweden would be asked to participate in the study.   The results show that the majority of the respondents believe that fire protection is not the home service's area of responsibility. It also shows that there was a difference in the view of fire protection depending on whether the respondent worked out with patients or did not. Where respondents who worked out at users to a greater extent controlled and worked around the users' fire protection than the respondents who did not work out at users. However, the number of respondents who worked out at users was lower than those who did not work out at users. It also shows that the respondents' views on fire protection differ geographically. This could consist of, for example, the use of a checklist for national inventory with regard to fire protection, which was used more frequently in some regions than others.  The conclusions that can be drawn from the work are that the responsibility for the elderly who cannot look after their own fire protection is not specified. According to the law on protection against accidents, it is the individual's responsibility to review their fire protection if they live in ordinary housing. But if the person cannot do it himself, for example due to dementia or disability, there is no clear picture of who should do it. The Social Services Act may indicate that it is the municipalities' responsibility to review the elderly population within the municipality, but nothing is printed out exactly regarding fire protection.

Authentic texts or adapted texts - That is the question! The use of authentic and adapted texts in the study of English in two Swedish upper secondary schools and a study of student and teacher attitudes towards these texts

Daskalos, Konstantinos, Jellum Ling, Jeppe January 2006 (has links)
AbstractDaskalos, Konstantinos & Jellum Ling, Jeppe (2005)Authentic texts or adapted texts – That is the question! The use of authentic and adapted texts in the study of English in two Swedish upper secondary schools and a study of student and teacher attitudes towards these texts. Skolutveckling och ledarskap, Lärarutbildningen 60 p, Malmö HögskolaThe aim of this paper is to find out which attitudes teachers and students have towards authentic and adapted texts used in the teaching of English in two Swedish grammar schools. Furthermore, the paper aims to demonstrate the importance of proper text selection in relation to student motivation. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with second year students in two different schools; on top of this, several interviews were conducted with students as well as an interview with a teacher. This was done to demonstrate the different attitudes towards the textbook and authentic texts and to illustrate the importance of choosing topics that students can relate to.The results show that students preferred to read authentic texts. These texts provided them with interesting topics. The teacher also preferred to use authentic texts and agreed that authentic texts usually created an active classroom, but pointed out that to substitute the textbook entirely with authentic material was unrealistic. Therefore, a combination of the two types of text would be preferable.

Access for All: Adapted Literacy Through Low-Tech Assistive Technology

Galyon, Cathy L., Floyd, Kim K., Woods-Fields, Colleen F. 01 July 2023 (has links)
Three-year-old Kasey has cerebral palsy (CP) with seizures. He often pushes books away, putting his head down instead. Kasey is learning preliteracy skills and enjoys manipulating objects but has great difficulty with fine motor abilities. Kasey’s twin, Kolby, also has CP. He enjoys having books read to him. He will often seek out books during check-out time, but he cannot interact with them on his own because of fine motor difficulties. His strengths include enjoying the computer with an adaptive switch, and he has the ability to understand key concepts in a story. Chandler is an active four-year-old with language delay, who often engages in imaginary play where he fights with ninjas during storytime. He seldom initiates looking at books, and when he does, he folds the pages, bends the corners of the book, or even tears the pages. During sensory activities such as playing in sand, finger painting, and playing with play dough, he is very attentive and will not leave that area. His strengths include his sustained attention to the sensory area and manipulatives table, his imagination, and his understanding of simple plots.
