Enablers to implement sustainable initiatives in agri-food supply chains

Mangla, S.K., Luthra, S., Rich, N., Kumar, D., Rana, Nripendra P., Dwivedi, Y.K. 26 September 2020 (has links)
yes / Due to rapid agricultural industrialization, increased global food demand, and, increasing concerns related to food quality and safety, the concepts of sustainability and supply chain transparency are becoming critically important to the agriculture and agri-food sector. The new focus on sustainability performance objectives emphasizes the effective utilization and consumption of natural resources to balance ecological, economic and societal aspects of agri-food businesses. The management of sustainability adds a new demand on business managers who often have small profits and receive stringent requirements from large powerful customers and retailers. In this paper, we recognize and analyze the key enablers in implementing sustainable initiatives for Agri-Food Supply Chains (A-FSCs). Ten important sustainability driven enablers were considered from a rigorous literature review and phase of expert consultation. The identified enablers were then analyzed using a combined Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) - fuzzy Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) based framework. The ISM approach enabled an appreciation of the contextual relationships among the enablers and to classify the enablers based on their driving and dependence potential. The fuzzy DEMATEL technique supported the determination of the influential and influenced enablers and also to categorize them into cause and effect groups. An empirical case study, drawn from a vegetable and fruit retail supply chain in India, is used to focus and test the applicability of the proposed research framework. The paper facilitates professional management practice and researchers to uncover and explore the enablers for the real execution of sustainability oriented initiatives in the agri-food business sector.

This study aimed to understand the adoption and the employment of patterns of sustainable production in the agri-food chain of soybean in the Amazon region. The theoretical guidelines for the research were: Transaction Cost Theory, Resource-Based View and Social Exchange Theory. The objective was to understand how contract and relational connections take place for the adoption of patterns of sustainable production. The research approach used was qualitative with a case study. Data was collected through the Snowball Sampling Technique, with a semi-structured questionnaire script, which was used to interview those in charge of the processing and certifying companies, SEMA, Aprosoja, ICV, CAT, UFMT, EMBRAPA and a group of nine soybean producers associated to CAT who work in the Amazon region and adopt patterns of sustainable production. Data was evaluated through the Content Analysis Technique, whose results suggest that the adoption and employment of patterns are taking place to meet the necessities of the external market. The information related to the soybean agri-food chain contributes to the validation of the supply-chain theory, which, for the model studied, is coordinated by support entities aiming to integrate the supply chain and external market connection. The use of these theories in the soybean agri-food chain and the adoption of patterns of sustainable production allowed to determine that the contract and relational governance existing among the links involved has the objective of standardizing, guiding, encouraging and easing practices which are less aggressive to the environment. For the case studied, among the producers it was concluded that the theories complement each other. With the study finished, it is possible to realize that this research helps prove that, in the Amazon region, there are producers concerned in showing they use correct environmental and social formats. However, new studies are necessary to compare if the contract and relational governance is present in other models of pattern adoption, as well as to discover which are the main conflicts and difficulties faced by the producers to employ patterns of sustainable production.

The political economy of "local foods" in Eastern Kansas : opportunities and justice in emerging agro-food networks and markets

Champion, Benjamin Lee January 2007 (has links)
Alternative agriculture and counter-cuisine movements have grown to a strong cultural current in Western European and North American societies. In recent years, these movements have begun to converge and coalesce around the concept of localizing agri-food relations and commodity chains as a way of redressing the deleterious environmental, social, and economic consequences of what are seen as dominant globalized food relations. This dissertation reports on a regional study in Eastern Kansas of the political economy of local food relations that has arisen through this producer and consumer response. It is an effort to recognize the regional interplay of disparate forces in constructing local food systems in the interest of framing more contextualized and nuanced questions about the environmental, social, and economic outcomes of alternative agri-food development. Network, conventions, and spatial analysis theories and methods were customized and put into practice in the service of these aims, using triangulation among them to mitigate each of their individual weaknesses in representing the variable embeddedness, politics, and spaces of local food in Eastern Kansas. It was found that local food generally represents a marketing niche in urban consumerism that is served primarily by regional rural producers. The distances, agricultural and food ecologies, forms of organization, and values underpinning local food linkages were all found to vary quite considerably throughout the region, creating a diverse combination of development agendas and impacts from local food networks and making food localization a highly contested concept. Local food development in its current form is thus highly dependent on urban/rural dialectics and projects of urbanization that lack open, transparent, and reflexive governance. Critical acknowledgement of these development interdependencies is important as a step toward encouraging social, economic, and environmental justice through local food development.

Ferrari, Dilvan Luiz January 2011 (has links)
Santa Catarina family farming have been reacting and adapting themselves to two relevant processes that have been transforming production and working condition along the last years. The first one regards the economic pressure which several activities developed in different territories in Santa Catarina face. The second one regards the moving back of the demand for differentiated quality food products that one verifies in the context of developed countries and also in Brazil. Family farming historically present close relation with big agriindustrial complexes, in a process that they become suppliers of raw materials to transform into standardize products under the rule of industrial production. The reaction to these processes are happening through several initiatives and practices that aim at a repositioning in the agri-food food markets, inserting themselves in an autonomous way and building new markets through the production and processing of differentiated quality food, whether artisanal, organic, or in the identification with the local culture and values. The strategies of integration to several new markets through the construction of new agri-food chains has becoming familiar practice in several places and present close relation with the family farmers constant struggle for autonomy and progress, with the processes of rural development and with the rural changes in progress. The emergence of these new agri-food markets (of quality) can be identified in Santa Catarina through the reconnection of the relations between producer and consumer that emerges from the construction of short agrifood chains These chains characterize themselves by rooting food practices in local ecosocial relations, creating new economic spaces. A key characteristic would be its capability to re-socialize or re-spacialize food, allowing consumer to make value judgment. It would mean redefine the relation producer-consumer by giving clear signals about the product origin and the role of this relation in the construction of values and meanings. Thus, this thesis discusses fundamentally the construction by Santa Catarina family farmers of short agri-food chains as an ad value strategy through insertion in markets of products with specific qualities conforming through food production and trade a relation of trust among producers and consumers. To such three short chains in different contexts in Santa Catarina were analysed: the chains face to face, the ones with spatial proximity and the ones spatially extended. From three case studies we aim at understanding the processes that have been provoking rural changes and dynamicly altering the ways of production, organization, and integration of family farmers in new market circuits and stimulating the dispute among several agents that conform distinct food worlds in Santa Catarina. These short chains arise from proximity relations and are both cause and result of the active construction of nets by several actors in agri-food chain acting in the re-socialization and re-location of food in situations of emergent rural development. We made evident that insert family farmers in market circuits through food production with differentiated quality starting from the construction of short chains is a strategy that aims at amplifying autonomy and more appropriation of the added value to products with differentiated quality.

Les facteurs d'attractivité territoriale au service du développement au Liban : le cas du Akkar / The territorial attractiveness factors for the service of development in Lebanon : the case of Akkar

Khneyzer, Chadi 09 November 2016 (has links)
Lebanon knows nowadays a phenomenon against original-urban migration, while growing urbanization is rather the great feature of our world today. This has piqued our curiosity led us to investigate the causes of this dynamic in some Lebanese areas while others remain outside and suffer from underdevelopment. Such is the case of the region that is the subject of our research: Akkar, north Lebanon. To boost the region and trigger a process of territorial development, it is clear that agriculture must be aware of the concerns of the center of its predominance in the territory of Akkar and comparative advantages it provides.Several theoretical and empirical work highlights the virtues of the development of agriculture in terms of GDP growth and the fight against poverty and show that agriculture reacts faster than other sectors to new policies and contributes greatly to the GDP. Agricultural growth stimulates the whole economy because it creates markets for non-agricultural goods and services, producing a diversification effect of the economic base of rural areas. Thus the food industry and tourism will develop in line with a new vision for agriculture. Finally, the current weaknesses of Akkar economy can become opportunities if the multifunctional nature of the rural economy is sustainable development from a dynamic encompassing agriculture, agribusiness and tourism. Shares on the conditions of production (improving infrastructure, strengthening education and training, financial support and rational organization of production) involve state support. The actions of revitalization and recovery through a series of local development projects involve for their strong mobilization of local actors and decentralized for greater flexibility, especially in the management of decentralized cooperation projects.

From the conception of policy network, this paper has been sought to determine how the different policy networks in Mato Grosso do Sul s cattle breeding have gotten conformed. For such, it has been undertaken a study of multiple cases. For the milky territorial policy network case, it has been adopted as unit of analysis the political process that resulted on the inclusion of the type C pasteurized milk in the government's State acquisitions of Mato Grosso do Sul, destined to a specific social program, the Programa de Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional (PSAN) Program of Feeding and Nutritional Security. Therefore, the unit of analysis of beef cattle culture territorial policy network was the Programa de Melhorias na Cadeia Produtiva da Carne - Improvements Program in the Productive Network of Beef, orchestrated by the Serviço de Apoio às Micro e Pequenas Empresas de Mato Grosso do Sul (Sebrae/MS) - Support Service to the Mato Grosso do Sul small sized companies (Sebrae/MS). The results indicate that beef cattle culture territorial policy network can be seen as a political community, arrangement in network already well known in the literature, and that the milky policy network, weakly integrated and with multiple participants, it setups another specific type, that approaches the ideal model of diffused network. The results of this study show that the institutional densification in the political community of beef in Mato Grosso do Sul has brought positive results for the network organizations, as the shared use of resources for the training of actors technically deficient. The milky diffused network, then, is composed of actors who get results just limited in the strategic interaction. The ownership of resources, as it is clear, is enlarged when the actors get adapted to the wide institutional context that permeates their activities, letting thus the reference old frames that for decades, guided the decision taking in this agri business.

The urbanization resulting from the Brazilian industrialization process, which occurred after the second part of the twentieth century, after the Second World War, influenced the infra-structural aspects of large centers, with a massive process of development of the production of consumer goods and the stimulation of industry and, consequently, the population growth of the urban network. After this period, and after the entry of successive stagnations and economic recessions, there were socioeconomic structural problems regarding health and social issues, causing, among other problems, food insecurity. It is in this aspect of food and nutritional security in urban centers that Urban Agriculture is addressed. The activity focuses on agricultural production within urban spaces, and is expected to promote, in addition to improving the environment and reorganization of idle and polluted urban spaces, food security with health benefits of practitioners. The present study consisted in analyzing the impact of Urban Agriculture on the Food Safety of consumers of the Urban and Periurban Agriculture (AUP) activity in the city of Maringá, State of Paraná, through the evaluation of food insecurity scales as well as statistical analysis descriptive and linear multiple regression. In addition, its members and food availability were characterized in a quantity and quality that was socially desirable. As a result, it was identified that the activity has not produced a food safety framework that meets the basic nutritional needs of the practicing consumers, which are food insecure, and is used by a large part of the population in the food security situation for leisure and therapy purposes.

Contribution des capacités du système d'information à la performance des entreprises agroalimentaires / Contribution of the information system's capacities to the performance of agri-food companies

Labib, Mohamed 11 May 2017 (has links)
