Tony Baker & Alex Iles: Interviews with Two Trombonists who Excel as Performers and Soloists in Classical and Jazz settingsJanuary 2012 (has links)
abstract: The ability of musicians to perform well in multiple musical styles is increasingly common and necessary. This paper profiles two trombonists who have gone well beyond the ability to function in multiple genres, and are instead considered significant artists. Tony Baker and Alex Iles were chosen to be profiled for this project because both have achieved recognition as solo artists in the genres of classical music and jazz and have performed on international stages as soloists. They also have significant ensemble experience in both classical and jazz settings and are active teachers as well. Both hold-high profile positions that have helped grow their reputations as performers: Mr. Baker as a professor at one of the largest music schools in the United States, the University of North Texas, and Mr. Iles as a highly in-demand freelance musician in Los Angeles. This paper presents interviews with both trombonists that investigate their development as musicians and soloists in both classical music and jazz. They are asked to describe the benefits and challenges of performing at a high level in both styles, and how these have affected their musical voices. Common traits found in their responses are examined, and recommendations are created for musicians seeking stylistic versatility. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012

En Darwinistisk reduktionismWengelin Grantén, Elin January 2018 (has links)
Alex Rosenbergʼs Darwinian reductionism is a more recent form of reductionism that aims at settling the dispute between reductionists and antireductionists in philosophy of biology. The idea is that the principle of natural selection can be viewed as a physico-chemical law that can ground biology in physics and chemistry, and hence make reductionism possible despite issues such as multiple realizability and downward causation. Rosenbergʼs proposal has received a lot of critique, so my aim is to investigate whether this critique is sound, and to enquire into whether Rosenbergʼs understandings of reductionism, antireductionism and physicalism are reasonable, and if Darwinian reductionism can survive the critique presented. My conclusion is that Rosenberg indeed is quite controversial and makes some strong claims, but also that a lot of the critique he receives is misguided and focused on asserting that Rosenberg is mistaken, rather than actually arguing against Rosenbergʼs claims. Despite some problematic assumptions, I do think that Rosenbergʼs proposal contributes to a philosophical pluralism within philosophy of biology.

Alex la Guma: a literary and political biography of the South African yearsField, Roger Michael January 2001 (has links)
>Doctor Literarum - DLit / The South African years (1925-1966) of Alex la Guma is examined in this thesis. While La Guma's father was an important role model, most critics have overlooked his mother's contribution to his literary and political development. Throughout the thesis the same point is made about Blanche, La Guma's wife, who supported him in many ways. The researcher describes La Guma's infancy, childhood and adolescence, his father's political profile, how notions of race and writing, coloured identity and family and political experiences created the conditions that enabled him to become a story teller and political activist . / South Africa

Performing Architecture: A Thesis on Playful DesignTaylor, Alex Matthew 05 February 2015 (has links)
There is an element of play within all of us. It is imagination and interaction that makes us human. In this digital age, it is evident that we are losing touch with our own ability to remain imaginative and explore new and different ways to physically interact with our environment. In this thesis, it is my goal is to design in a way that does not limit human abilities, but instead promotes the idea of play between our wants and needs as well as re-sparking our imagination.
In this thesis exploration, I experimented with multiple scales of playful design. I will show you how I implemented the idea of play for the design of a kite, a toy, a furniture piece, and a building. All of these projects are examples of designs that could have been static elements, but instead were designed to be dynamic to complement our everyday dynamic lives.
Enjoy! / Master of Architecture

A Study of Viewer Response to the Television Presentation, “Roots”Cannon, Sherry L. 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this research is to discover viewer response to the television series, "Roots," as revealed through newspapers and magazines published from December, 1976, to June 20, 1977. Thirty-seven articles and 134 interviewee responses were analyzed. The responses with the highest frequency of occurrence in the sample provided eight major categories (listed in the order of highest to lowest frequency of response): inaccuracy/oversimplification, increased awareness, future race relations, white guilt, black anger, future prime time television programming, black pride, and sadness. The predominant appeal of "Roots" was to the emotions of the viewers. Despite the criticism of inaccuracy and/or oversimplification, "Roots" was a timely presentation relating to a current social concern with justice and heritage.

[pt] Entre 1959 e 1963, Alex Viany publicou, na revista
Senhor,
uma série de
ensaios, artigos e críticas sobre o cinema estrangeiro e
nacional. O objetivo
desta pesquisa é a recuperação dessa produção
intelectual
e que se encontra
arquivada nessa revista. O estudo desenvolve-se a partir
da percepção da
Senhor como um repositório do pensamento específico
sobre
o cinema no
publicadas, determinou a
orientação do periódico quanto ao cinema. Assim, a
entender e apreciar o
cinema de arte. / [en] From 1959 until 1963, Alex Viany published essays,
articles and reviews
about foreign and Brazilian cinema in the Senhor magazine.
This dissertation
intends to explore his intellectual productions in terms
of referencing this
particular magazine as an authority on cinema thought at
the beginning of the
1960`s in Brazil. In general, Senhor will be considered
for its cultural value in
its time. More specifically, the foreign and national
cinema texts by Alex
Viany will be grouped and analyzed. Senhor magazine
published more cinema
reviews by Alex Viany during the 1960s than by any other
reviewer. As a
result, his thought determined the periodical`s
orientation about cinema
productions. Senhor`s goal of moving its readership
towards sophisticated
thought and cosmopolitan ideas was enhanced by Alex
Viany`s contributions
in educating the public on the art of cinema.

Introduction. I report an investigation designed to identify the contemporary role of digital resources for information retrieval, such as Alex Author-dictionary. This study proposes that it is essential to see digital resources and their specific place within contemporary structures for information retrieval, that digital resources relate to a broader context. My focus is facts beyond giving patrons access to a specific type of information about authors. Method. This case study uses integration of qualitative content analysis from interviewees with data analysis. A pre-search interview and data-analysis along with follow-up interviews established some interesting perspectives on Alex Author-dictionary as well as aspects on digital resources for information retrieval. Transcripts of the interviews formed the data for analysis. Analysis. Qualitative analyses were carried out from two preparatory email-interviews, one with the editor and one with a person who writes for Alex. Another pre-search interview and two following interview sessions, one with a school librarian and another with a public librarian, were conducted. Results. It proved possible to demonstrate that Alex Author-dictionary as such has its benefits compared to sources from the internet. The results derive from and agree with some previous studies, especially that there is a where, when and how to use different resources. The web for example could advantageously give patrons access to other formats such as video interviews etc. that the library doesn’t hold. Conclusion. I identify a need to enlarge the scope of how patrons teach users. Users of all ages would be benefited from knowing when to use Google and when benefited using other digital resources of information retrieval. This sound awareness is directly related to users need to develop skills, and then interpret their own actual information literacy. This could take place either in sessions of user education at the library, or from teachers in a school environment.

The Good KillingAaron, Alex F 20 December 2013 (has links)
This paper will provide a far-ranging analysis of the relevant aspects of the filmmaking process as it pertains to the development and production of the thesis project, The Good Killing. This analysis will include both a detailed, biographic overview of the making of the film, as well as an in-depth critique of the creative decision-making and practical methodology that guided the production. In this regard, special attention will be first be given to how the project was initially conceived, and, broadly speaking, what was originally intended. Secondly, proceeding sections will examine key elements of the filmmaker’s technical planning, performance, and working philosophy, specifically citing directing style, cinematography, sound and editing. Through this evaluative process, the film will be judged from the standpoint of both concept and execution in order to determine overall success.

Musikaliska porträtt av Alex & Sigge : - om att skriva musik till podcast-segment / Musical portrait of Alex & Sigge : - about writing music to podcast segments.Jennersjö, Benjamin January 2019 (has links)
