Stress and coping in high performance squash coaching

Tranfield, Jennifer K. January 2002 (has links)
This thesis investigates stress and coping in high performance squash coaching from the perspectives of both the coach and the player. An introduction to the thesis (chapter 1), a discussion of key concepts and theories from the general stress and coping literature (chapter 2), and a systematic review of the stress and coping in sport literature (chapter 3) are presented. The empirical work is reported in two phases. Phase one (chapters 4, 5 & 6) documents an in-depth study of 18 high performance squash coaches. Retrospective interviews were used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. Inductive content analysis (Patton, 1980) revealed 223 raw data themes for stress, which collapsed into 12 general dimensions, and 415 raw data themes for coping, from which 13 general dimensions emerged. Descriptive statistics on stress source characteristics revealed a number of interesting trends that required further investigation. Further, general ('multi-purpose') and specific coping strategies were identified. Coping effectiveness and frequency data detailed the analysis. Phase two (chapters 7, 8 & 9) investigates stress and coping experiences of elite squash players during coaching activities via two studies. In study one, data were collected through telephone interviews, and analysed using inductive content analysis (QSR NUDIST), revealing 227 raw data themes for stress and coping from which 9 stress and 8 coping general dimensions emerged. These results were used to develop a postal questionnaire (study two) administered to 84 elite squash players on the England Squash World Class Performance Programme (Jan. 1999). A response rate of 60% was obtained, data was input into SPSS, and various statistical tests revealed significant contributions to 5 major investigative themes detennined at the outset. An overall picture of the landscape in stress and coping in high performance squash coaching is offered, and conclusions and future directions are presented (chapter 10).

Third-party anger and being moved

Landmann, Helen 08 May 2017 (has links)
Moral and immoral behavior can elicit strong emotions. For instance, people can get outraged when they witness unfair behavior (i.e., they experience third-party anger) and they can be intensely moved and overwhelmed by exceptional helpfulness (i.e., they experience feelings of being moved). Using these feelings of third-party anger and being moved as examples, this dissertation set out to clarify how morality and emotions are related. Specifically, the role of outcomes and norms for emotional reactions and behavioral consequences were investigated within six empirical studies. Results indicate that third-party anger and feelings of being moved are counterparts: whereas witnessing behavior that violates norms (e.g., unfairness or disrespect) elicits anger, witnessing behavior that surpasses norms (e.g., exceptional helpfulness or outstanding achievement) elicits feelings of being moved. These emotional episodes seem to be highly relevant for social life as they were associated with punishment decisions, voting intentions and voluntary work. Explaining the elicitation of these emotions was improved when expanding established appraisal assessment methods. Taken together, these findings provide a framework for applying appraisal research to moral emotions and contribute to identifying links between moral principles and emotions. In addition, they point to practical implications concerning anger-induction through the media and the role of being moved in persuasion processes.

A Product-Service System project covers the creation of artifacts and their mutual relationships, taking into account both tangible and intangible dimensions in the composition of the offer and how this can be delivered to user in the most complete way possible. In order to meet the users' needs, first it is needed to understand what their concerns are in relation to what is about to be designed. Through the Appraisals' Theory it is possible to gain this insight and also provide the designer with the tools needed to apply it to the project. The objective of this research is to evaluate the use of a hierarchically organized concern profile in the development of a PSS project and to identify its contribution to this process. The PSS context under study are street food events based in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In order to conduct this research, we have first used qualitative methods (13 in-depth interviews) to identify concerns and elaborate a concern profile for patrons and non-patrons. We have then applied a quantitative method (survey with 328 users) to establish descriptive parameters for the concern statements as variables. A statistical procedure of multivariate data analysis has been performed on these results, obtaining a hierarchy of the concern statements. The last research step has been a project stage, organized in two workshops with professionals discussing and developing a street food event project, with only one group having access to the hierarchized concern profile. Our results show that the hierarchization of concerns can contribute by providing the designer with more qualified resources about the user, reducing risks during the design process, and promoting a PSS more focused on the user's concerns. These findings have practical and theoretical implications for research and processes involving user perspective in PSS design.

Female shoes have important role in women’s life as they represent symbols of power, elegance and sensuality. Shoes assumed love is commonly seen in our society and can be understood as a result of a set of positive emotional experiences lived by women. In this way, the shoe is perceived as belonging in a system that encompasses elements that transcend the physical aspects of the product. Under the product system scope, this study aimed to analyze experiences of ten women from 20 to 53 years old with their loved shoes from an Appraisals analysis. This analysis was made by content analysis, that enabled to conceive empiric categories which were related to seven appraisals components of Appraisals Theory. This study enable to understand the positive emotional triggers that resulted in the love by shoes. Thereby, as a result, this study relates elements which can contribute to designer to design shoes which can become loved shoes by women. Therefore, this research also contributes to women’s shoes studies and for emotional design area.

Process of psychological adjustment to multiple sclerosis : comparing the roles of appraisals, acceptance, and cognitive fusion

Ferenbach, Clive Thomas January 2011 (has links)
Background: Research in psychological adjustment to multiple sclerosis (MS) suggests that the way individuals appraise their condition can have an impact upon their psychological well-being and adjustment to their condition. Such research has influenced the development of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) interventions in this population. In recent years, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has gathered increasing interest in relation to chronic health conditions. ACT does not target the content of thought, but rather focuses on the contexts in which thought occurs (i.e. how individuals relate to their experiences). Aim and Primary Hypothesis: A cross sectional design was used to compare the extent to which cognitive appraisals and ACT constructs (‘acceptance’ and ‘cognitive fusion’), mediate the relationship between physical symptoms of MS and psychological adjustment outcomes. It was hypothesised that in comparison to cognitive appraisals, ACT constructs would serve as stronger mediators of the relationship between physical symptoms of MS and outcome measures. This study also piloted a newly adapted measure of MS related acceptance, the Multiple Sclerosis Acceptance Questionnaire (MSAQ). Method and Results: Participants (N = 133) completed self-report measures of: MS symptom severity, various cognitive constructs (cognitive appraisals and ACT constructs), symptoms of psychological distress, and satisfaction with life. Multiple mediation analysis was then used to compare competing mediational hypotheses. In comparison to all measures of cognitive appraisals, the ACT constructs tended to be stronger mediators of the relationship between symptoms and outcome measures (both psychological distress, and satisfaction with life). There was also some evidence for appraisals of personal control mediating the relationship between symptoms of MS and psychological distress. Conclusions: This research suggests that ACT constructs may be relevant to the process of psychological adjustment to MS, and that ACT based interventions may be worthy of investigation in this population. The newly adapted MSAQ also shows preliminary promise as a measure of MS related acceptance.
