Becoming through displacementWang, Ting January 2024 (has links)
This project is aiming to experience the process of following a designed research plan to formulate a narrative and an artwork, to evaluate the necessity of a rational research in an artistic project. The subject of the artwork is displacement – the displacement of identity and the displacement of craft heritage. As a Chinese living in Sweden for around ten years, displacement is a longstanding theme in my art and a lens that I subconsciously observe the world through. Therefore, I interpret the issue of craft heritage in the contemporary society as displacement. Against the backdrop of globalization and consumer culture, almost all craft heritage are experiencing a displacement from its original cultural and societal context, having been marginalized and lost the connection to people’s daily life. This project used wax batik as a paradigm to discuss the potential development opportunity for craft heritage. Inspired by Deleuze’s becoming and rhizome theory, the theoretical research and studio experimentations formed a broad theoretical and practice base that paved the way for the formulation of the narrative and the final artwork. The implementation of this project proved that a rational research could play a significant role in terms of facilitating the agencies and actions that are leading to the final artwork. Additionally, an adequate research enables the work to be articulated and discussed in language. Becoming is the key word of the output of the project. Instead of being considered as fading from the contemporary society, displaced craft heritage has the potential to adapt to the new context and become something new; every one of us has the possibility to propose a brighter future for craft heritage. Displacement is a prerequisite for the becoming.

Atlas numérique Genius Loci, modélisation de connaissance à partir d’une poétique du chantier / Digital Atlas Genius Loci, knowledge modelling based on poetics of construction sitesDomengie, Céline 22 November 2018 (has links)
This research thesis in art unfolds in two main and closely linked dimensions, one epistemological and the other artistic. Firstly, from an epistemological point of view, it is the expression of the continuum between theory and practice. It hypothesizes that meta-art initiated by two artists: Adrian Piper in the 1970s and Jean-Paul Thibeau in the 1990s, defines the right method to explicit and analyse the artistic experimentation. This theoretical-practical program is carried out through the writing of two kinds of texts: the experience accounts of our projects (Genius Loci Monflanquin, Genius Loci Aix, Genius Loci Villeneuve, Genius Loci UBUBM) and the analytical comments ("How to represent movement? ", " How can ecosophy shed light on the artistic practices that take place in everyday life as a experimentation situation? ", "How to make a decision? ", and "How to build a pathway to the heart of a living environment?”). Secondly, from an artistic point of view, this thesis opens up a space for experimentation on the creation of the Atlas Genius Loci. The "construction site situations" from which we have worked (in particular those with Bordeaux universities) have led us to practice a research-creation on tangible living environments, and to pursue artistic cooperation with project owners and institutions. With the possible links between art and architecture (Building Information Modeling) as a starting point, our Atlas has become a "mesological process" claiming a presence-alliance between an artist and an institution. The extension of this research-creation, where the field-environment from where one speaks is both explicit in its materiality and involved in the experimentation, is part of the legacy of institutional analysis (sociology) and institutional criticism (art) practiced since the 1970s.The contemporary commitment of the artist in society, and reciprocally, the place that society gives to art, expresses the singularity of the artistical research, and the way that it now opens up original perspectives for the alliance of the academic world with civil society.

Funcionamento da obra de pesquisa / Functioning of the artwork of researchGodoi, Vagner 05 December 2018 (has links)
From the years 2000 to 2010, discussions on artistic productions that are related to knowledge, university, research, theory, reflection, education and other fields of knowledge are intensified and renovated. One of the angles of this multifaceted phenomenon, and a reason for the rising interest in it by artists and other art professionals, can be summarized by the expression artistic research. One of the contributions of this thesis is correlating the pioneering creation of postgraduate programs in Visual Arts in Brazil, consistently established and defined since the 1970s, to this recent phenomenon, that took place specially in Europe, initiated by the transformation of art academies into universities, followed by an intense debate on the meanings of artist research. Moreover, this study examines artistic, discursive, pedagogical and theoretical productions by Brazilian artists Jorge Menna Barreto and Ricardo Basbaum in order to find the poetic line of research, contextualizing both as heirs of research in art in Brazil and affiliates of these international shifts on artistic research. The starting point is the uncertainty regarding the multiplicity of meanings and nomenclatures that artist research provokes, not as an ontological enquiry, but with the purpose of understanding their place, an institutional matter of art inserted in the university environment, and, particularly, a problem found in the work of art itself, now considered research.

Based on the artistic process, this research reflects and describes the preparation of arrangements and a recital of music from videogames as a concert repertoire. The theoretical references are discussions about music in videogames, related audio technologies, discussions about artistic research, texts about performance and about the concert as an event. The documents developed by the author during the process are scores of arrangements, posters and logos that I drew. Nowadays, video game music is no longer restricted to games, it is a repertoire that has been played by orchestras and soloists in different parts of the world. From a noise that was intended to illustrate the sound of the beating ball in the Pong (1972) game to the symphonic materials present in the games of today, we can perceive a history of technological evolutions, market demands, interpretive practices and the possibility of a new window to be open in the field of music studies. In this work, I present the report on the different stages for the preparation of a concert with video game music, involving the choice of repertoire, preparation of the arrangements, realization of posters for dissemination and interpretative decisions.

Designing with Urban Sound : Exploring methods for qualitative sound analysis of the built environmentHällgren, Nina January 2019 (has links)
The licentiate thesis Designing with Urban Sound explores the constitution and qualitative characteristics of urban sonic space from a design-oriented and practice-based perspective. The act of lifting forth and illuminating the interaction between architecture, the creation of sound and a sonic experience aims to examine and develop useful tools and methods for the representation, communication and analysis of the exterior sonic environment in complex architectural spaces. The objective is to generate theoretical and practical knowledge within the field of urban sound planning and design by showing examples of different and complementary ways of communicating and analyzing sound than those which are commonly recognized.

Design And Body : Exploring Conceptions Of The Body In Fashion Design ProcessesSaleem, Faseeh January 2022 (has links)
The human body has been considered to be an active element and is a common starting point of fashion design processes. However, during these processes, understanding of the body and how it is used to design is often confined by the body’s standard spatial and structural characteristics. The research presented in this thesis aimed to examine body alternatives in fashion design processes in order to explore and open up for alternative body expressions for developing silhouettes for clothing. Alternative aesthetic approaches and understandings of the body as a design tool were researched through experimental explorations, reflections, dialogue, and discussions. These created an embodied dialogue between thought and execution which was further developed and informed by the EDI (Embodied Design Ideation) framework for analysing and refining understandings of the interactions between the body, materials, and movement. These explorations and their outcomes bridge the theory of research for the art and research for art and design. The explorations were based on the varied ways in which the body is perceived during body-material interactions, and were explored through movement, human-technology interfaces, and an exploratory workshop conducted at the Swedish School of Textiles. These explorations expanded our understanding of the body’s aesthetics in relation to material interactions and embodied experiences. The explorations questioned our preconceived conceptions of the body and facilitated a process of re-learning these through fashion design. The results of the explorations were alternative methods and tools that use the body as a central variable in fashion design. The research culminated in the development of conceptions of the body in design processes that increase the design possibilities by introducing new concepts, tools, and methods. The body alternatives developed provide an openness in terms of design thinking and introduce conceptions of the body that can facilitate or improve design practice. The results have implications for design methods and contribute to methods in general and fashion design education programmes in terms of how they facilitate design processes.
