Le Liber contra collatorem est un traité composé par Prosper d’Aquitaine en 432-433, qui réfute les positions d’un certain « conférencier », c’est-à-dire l’auteur des Conférences, Jean Cassien. C’est dans cette œuvre que Prosper, défenseur de saint Augustin et de sa doctrine de la grâce, a pu fournir la critique la plus complète des théories propagées par les adversaires provençaux de l’évêque d’Hippone, en s’appuyant exclusivement sur des extraits tirés de la Conl. XIII « Sur la protection de Dieu ».En abordant, dans une première partie, les aspects les plus importants de l’œuvre (finalité du traité, modus operandi, genre littéraire, pratiques polémiques, enjeux théologiques), la présente thèse cherche à défendre l’hypothèse qu’en composant son Liber, Prosper a voulu constituer un dossier à charge suffisamment argumenté pour obtenir de l’évêque de Rome une condamnation officielle de ce que l’on a nommé le « semipélagianisme » et, par là, la reconnaissance de l’autorité de la doctrine augustinienne en matière de grâce. La seconde partie consiste en l’étude de l’ensemble de la tradition manuscrite du traité et des témoignages médiévaux le concernant, qui permet de mettre en évidence une histoire du texte aussi riche que complexe, qui justifie pleinement l’établissement d’une nouvelle édition – la première qui soit critique – de nature à corriger un textus receptus, datant de 1711, qui ne laisse pas d’être par endroits problématique. Cette édition est assortie d’une traduction française et d’une annotation destinée à éclairer les passages les plus importants ou les moins facilement compréhensibles du texte. / The Liber contra collatorem is a treatise written in 432-433 by Prosper of Aquitaine, who refutes the positions taken by a certain “lecturer”, by which John Cassian is meant, author of the Conferences. As an advocate of Augustine and of his doctrine of grace, Prosper has provided in this work most fully his criticism of the theories expressed by the bishop of Hippo’s Southern-French opponents. In order to do this, Prosper built only on excerpts from Conference nr. 13, “On the protection of God”. The first part of this thesis addresses the principal aspects of the work: the purpose of the treatise, the modus operandi, the literary genre, polemical practices, and theological issues. In doing so, this thesis defends the hypothesis that Prosper wrote his treatise in order to assemble a sufficiently argued file to obtain an official condemnation by the bishop of Rome of what has been called “Semipelagianism” and thus the recognition of the authority of the Augustinian doctrine of grace. The second part presents a study of the manuscript tradition of the treatise and of its medieval testimonies, which allows unraveling a rich and complex textual history. Hence, a new edition is justified, the first critical one, correcting and replacing the textus receptus dating from 1711, which is problematic at various points. The edition here presented is provided with a French translation and annotated in order to cast light on the most important or les easily comprehensible passages of the text.

Cette thèse montre que, dans les Sermones in Matthaeum, les interprétations scripturaires développées par Augustin d’Hippone ont fait l’objet d’un choix, que justifie une adaptation pastorale au double contexte historique et liturgique de la prédication. Établi à partir du classement thématique des Mauristes, le « corpus » regroupe des sermons prêchés en différents lieux, entre 393 et 430 ; il se prête donc à une évaluation de ces adaptations.Le chapitre 1 propose une synthèse critique des données contextuelles (historiques, géographiques, sociologiques et liturgiques) concernant ces sermons, comme autant de pierres d’attente à d’éventuelles adaptations ; le chapitre 2 montre que leur texte biblique, souvent vieux latin, a parfois un substrat africain. Les chapitres 3 à 6 analysent l’exégèse d’une vingtaine de sermons choisis pour leur dimension réflexive afin de questionner, de manière inductive, les motifs des adaptations exégétiques. Les études comparent les interprétations du texte commenté à celles présentes dans les autres œuvres augustiniennes et dans la tradition patristique, et intègrent une approche rhétorique. Homilétique, cette exégèse se situe, comme les sermons qui la développent, à l’intersection entre Parole de Dieu (chapitres 3 et 4) et réponses des hommes (chapitres 5 et 6). Elle assume la situation historique dans laquelle elle est élaborée pour, en s’insérant dans la dynamique de la liturgie dont elle reçoit la matière du commentaire et la finalité qui l’oriente, faire en sorte que la res qu’elle transmet de façon quasi sacramentelle par les uerba du prédicateur, fructifie chez les auditeurs.Cette thèse comprend aussi une bibliographie et quatre annexes : un fichier signalétique sur les Sermones in Matthaeum et son résumé, les relevés des occurrences augustiniennes des citations étudiées et la liste des lectures liturgiques de l’Évangile de Matthieu. / This doctoral thesis shows that in Sermones in Matthaeum the biblical interpretations developed by Augustine of Hippo were selected in order to comply with a pastoral adaptation to the double historical and liturgical preaching context. Established on the basis of the Maurists’ thematic classification, the corpus contains sermons preached in different places between 393 and 430; it is therefore suitable for evaluating these adaptations. Chapter 1 gives a critical survey of the contextual data (historical, geographical, sociological and liturgical) concerning these sermons, to be taken as potential, adaptable building blocks; chapter 2 shows that the biblical text, often in Old Latin forms, has an African substrate. Chapter 3 to 6 analyse the exegesis of about twenty sermons selected for their reflexive dimension, in order to inductively question the reasons for the exegetical adaptations. The analyses compare the interpretations of the commented text with those present in other Augustinian works and in the Patristic tradition, and integrate a rhetorical approach. Like the sermons which develop it, this homiletic exegesis lies at the intersection of God’s Word (chapter 3 and 4) and men’s answers (chapter 5 and 6). It assumes the historic context in which it is developed and penetrates the dynamic of the liturgy from which it gets the subject of its comment and the aim of its orientation, so that the res which it conveys in a quasi sacramental way through the uerba of the preacher bears fruit within the listeners. This doctoral thesis also includes a bibliography and four annexes: an identification file about the Sermones in Matthaeum and its summary, a summary table of Augustinian occurrences to be found in the analysed quotations and the list of the liturgical readings from Matthew’s Gospel.

當今現實主義理論學派正面臨著一種淺碟化的危機,伴隨而來的是現實主義深遠的傳統根基遭受簡化以及忽視。本文企圖藉由重新檢驗現實主義傳統的古典文獻,提出在現實主義中的許多被忽略的問題。本文重新定位與評析現實主義之主要理論傳統,包括修昔底德傳統、奧古斯丁傳統、馬基維利傳統、以及霍布斯傳統等四大傳統。此外,本文亦將討論上述四項傳統理論的遺緒。吾人以為,當今現實主義學派的主流理論途徑,存在著嚴重的內在邏輯問題,同時這些問題影響著當代的國關研究。主流學者過度關注於特定版本的霍布斯傳統,因而輕視其它於此理論學派中同等重要的途徑之可能性。同時,透過本文對於現實主義理論傳統多元性與豐富性之展現,本文也指出部分擁簇常識現實主義(commonsense Realism)的學者們,事實上已模糊化現實主義的理論本質。針對上述各種內在的理論問題,作者冀望以本文採一種重新詮釋、重新定位現實主義理論根基的途徑來展現並反省。 / Political Realism is suffering from a crisis of superficialization. The profound traditional roots of Political Realism are being simplified or ignored. This thesis attempts to re-examine the classical texts of Political Realism’s traditions and thus raise questions about some problems in this theoretical programme. Four major traditions which are the Thucydidesian, the Augustinian, the Machiavellian, and the Hobbesian tradition will be re-envisioned and re-appreciated, and their legacies to modern Realists will also be expounded. As this thesis would show, serious inherent logical problems exist in the dominant theoretical approach to Political Realism, which has become pertinent to international relations theory study. Mainstream scholars put too much undue attention on a certain version of the Hobbesian tradition and thus overlook other possibilities which are equally important in formatting this vast theoretical school. By showing the richness and diversity of Political Realism’s tradition, this thesis also suggests that the nature of this theoretical programme is being obfuscated by commonsense scholars. All these inherent theoretical problems will be exhibited in this thesis with an approach to re-appreciate and re-envision the traditional roots of Political Realism.

The questions about the origin of evil in the world were often a secondary product of the great philosophical systems. One of the first thinkers to deal with that problem systematically was neoplatonic scholar Plotinus. He developed a theory which he considered to be only a continuation of Plato´s thinking. It became an original theory, which in its core, has influence to this day. This theory was, mostly thanks to St. Augustine, applied to christian theology and became the living doctrine. The goal of this thesis is to demonstrate in what Plotinus´ theory of evil was "christianized" through the hand of Augustin. In other words, how it trasformed from a pagan philosophy to a theological one and how it was preserved for rediscovery in the scholastic era and became a new-again topic of scholastic scholars.

Constata a ausência de tradução em língua portuguesa do diálogo filosófico “De Musica” (Sobre a Música) de Agostinho de Hipona (354-430), bem como sua necessidade representada especialmente pela crescente presença na pesquisa especializada brasileira, propondo a tradução completa de seu texto latino para a mesma língua. Situa a obra na vida, na época e no conjunto bibliográfico do autor, expõe os principais problemas textuais e intertextuais, elementos de recepção e conteúdo, introduz cada um dos seis livros que a compõe e termina relacionando várias de suas contribuições para a construção e transmissão dos princípios estéticos ocidentais. Percorre algumas das etapas históricas da reflexão tradutória identificando suas mais importantes correntes, especialmente representadas na dicotomia entre tradução livre e tradução literal. Apresenta a proposta de solução funcionalista percorrendo os sucessivos aportes de seus principais teóricos e destacando especialmente as preocupações pedagógicas de alguns de seus idealizadores. Discute as críticas mais importantes recebidas pelo modelo funcionalista e propõe sua aplicação ao texto em questão aliada aos postulados da Literatura Comparada. Descreve a proposta funcionalista de abordagem tradutória de Christiane Nord enfatizando sua relevância enquanto prática de aproximação textual e cultural. Aplica os métodos propostos pela autora percorrendo a obra a ser traduzida e destaca aspectos em que a teoria se mostra mais produtiva. Mostra em três quadros os resultados dos dados obtidos na análise do texto de partida, das principais decisões tradutórias e da proposta de aplicação ao texto de chegada. Partindo da Literatura Comparada e do estado atual dos Estudos de Tradução, seleciona aspectos menos produtivos do modelo funcionalista optando pela rejeição de práticas especialmente prejudiciais à visibilidade do tradutor. Apresenta como principal resultado a primeira tradução completa em língua portuguesa para a referida obra agostiniana. Conclui destacando aspectos do fenômeno linguístico, seu caráter intencional, a inevitável parcialidade das aproximações teóricas, provisoriedade do fazer tradutório e a pertinência de algumas intuições agostinianas expressas no “De Musica”. / Having noted the absence of a Portuguese translation of Augustine of Hippo’s (354-430) philosophical dialogue "De Musica" (About Music), as well as its need represented especially by the growing presence in Brazilian specialized research, I propose the complete translation of his Latin text into Portuguese. This translation situates the work in life and in literature at the time set by the author, sets out the main textual and intertextual issues, receiving elements and content, introduces each of the six books that comprise it and ends relating several of his contributions to construction and transmission of Western aesthetic principles. It runs through some of the historic steps of translation reflection identifying their most important currents, especially those represented in the dichotomy between literal translation and free translation. This study presents the functionalist solution proposed, traversing the successive contributions of its major theorists and especially highlighting the pedagogical concerns of some of its founders. And so, this text discusses the major criticisms received by the functionalist model and proposes its application to the text in question together with the postulates of Comparative Literature. I describe the functionalist translator approach proposed by Christiane Nord emphasizing, its importance as a practice of textual and cultural analysis. I apply here the methods proposed by the Nord covering the work to be translated and highlight the ways in which the theory proves more productive. For this purpose, I bring in three charts with the results of the data obtained from analysis of the source text, the major translation decisions taken and their application to the target text. Starting from the Comparative Literature and the current state of Translation Studies, I selected less productive functionalist models opting for rejecting practices especially harmful to the visibility of the translator aspects. The main findings result show the first complete translation into Portuguese for such Augustinian work. I conclude by highlighting aspects of the linguistic phenomenon, its intentional character, the inevitable partiality of theoretical approaches, temporariness of doing translational and relevance of some Augustinian intuitions expressed in "De Musica".

Virtue, honour and moderation : the foundations of liberty in Montesquieu's political thought

Liberal thinkers have suggested different theories that legitimise the state's various processes, institutions, and use of coercive power. However, their theories cannot account for those motivations that cause men to put their lives in danger when standing against political oppression. The study of Montesquieu's theory of government can aid liberalism's incomplete account of the political motivations that incline men to defend their liberty. Toward this end, this thesis studies Montesquieu's notions of virtue and honour, and challenges the meaning they have been accorded in previous studies. This thesis suggests that Montesquieu combined these notions in order to conceive a type of motivation that inclines individuals to defend their liberty against encroachment. In order to recover this type of motivation, this study will adopt an approach of close textual analysis with attention to the context. Virtue and honour play a crucial role in Montesquieu's political thought because they foster the preservation of government. Virtue inclines citizens in republics to act with self-sacrifice. However, that virtue does not aim toward the attainment of excellence or of God's grace; rather, Montesquieu conceived virtue in relation to public utility. Honour inclines the subjects of monarchy to pursue their selfish desires in order to derive public benefits. However, Montesquieu did not conceive honour in connection with the liberal motif of the invisible hand; rather, he conceived honour in connection with the pursuit of glory. By combining honour and virtue, Montesquieu conceived a type of motivation that can foster the preservation of liberty in modernity. This motivation enables individuals to enjoy their liberty in times of peace by pursuing their selfish desires; in times of crisis, it inclines them to perform great actions in order to defend that liberty against political oppression. Considering Montesquieu's type can aid liberalism's account of political motivations in the contemporary debate.

Entre 394 et 396 après J-C, saint Augustin d’Hippone forma le projet d’écrire un commentaire de l’Épître aux Romains de saint Paul. Il en rédigea seulement un premier livre, où il commente les sept premiers versets de l’épître, puis examine la question du blasphème impardonnable contre l’Esprit Saint. Nous présentons ici ce texte. Notre thèse comporte d’abord une introduction générale, qui situe l’oeuvre dans son contexte historique et théologique, et discute de sa réception. Puis nous fournissons une édition critique (avec traduction française) du texte : l’édition, sur la base de 25 manuscrits et 5 éditions imprimées, est précédée d’une présentation détaillée de ses sources, d’un stemma justifié, et d’un commentaire des choix ecdotiques. Vient enfin un commentaire détaillé de tout l’ouvrage, qui a pour buts principaux d’éclairer les passages difficiles du texte, de noter ses particularités linguistiques, et d’expliquer sa pensée par référence au corpus augustinien et à la tradition patristique. / Between AD 394 and 396, St. Augustine of Hippo undertook the project of writing a commentary on St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. I present this text here. My thesis begins with a general introduction, which situates the work in its historical and theological context, and discusses its reception. Finally, I provide a detailed commentary on the whole work, whose main aims are to elucidate the text’s difficult passages, to note its linguistic particularities, and to explain its contents with reference to the Augustinian corpus and patristic tradition.
