Challenges and Opportunities for BFA Programs: Focus on Textiles Education

Kim, Hyunsoo January 2024 (has links)
Certain disjunctions exist between the structure, courses, and practices of current textile curricula on the one hand, and the demands of students for entry into diverse creative professions and the demands of the creative industry for qualified new talents on the other. Thus, this research will explore the history, current issues, and emerging trends of academia and the creative professions as these shape the qualifications, aspirations, and expectations of students, academia, and the textile-related fields. The ultimate goal of this study is to comprehend the contemporary issues—social, economic, and cultural shifts—that may impact textile education within art and design colleges, and propose an efficient and engaging BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) textile curriculum suitable for the era of interdisciplinary education and the fourth industrial revolution. Since scholarly study of the effectiveness of art school curriculum is limited and little research has examined the challenges of BFA education, and in particular BFA textile education in the context of 21st century college education, the researcher begins with a survey of existing literature from adjacent fields, including higher education, sociology, business, marketing, apparel, and art education, in particular, adolescent artistic development. The existing literature also includes statistics from government, consulting firms, colleges ranking sites, and annual reports published by each school. This qualitative case study examines how stakeholders in BFA textile education—students, faculty, and professionals—from five selected art colleges in the U.S. perceive their educational experiences and post-college careers. The data were collected through 1) a review of existing literature pertaining to perspectives of general college education, creative industry, and current student generation, and 2) qualitative data gathered through initial surveys and verbal interviews, including two pilot studies. Stakeholder perspectives obtained through interviews are interpreted through the following theoretical frameworks: 1) the business perspective aiming at the success of all stakeholders; 2) the marketing perspective aiming at improving stakeholder satisfaction as a means of enhancing the operational efficiency of organizations; and 3) the educational perspective aiming to create effective teaching and engaging learning environments for the success of today's young creative talents. The researcher contends that the findings strongly suggest curricular and pedagogy change in accordance with societal changes and demands of the stakeholders—current student generation, creative industry, and academia—while at the same time informing the significant value of college education, BFA education, and textile education in the 21st century.

Heatwaves in urban environments : How can planning solutions be used to mitigate the consequences of rising temperatures?

Stål, Anna, Kokkalis, Natalie January 2024 (has links)
This report explores the effects of heatwaves in urban environments and examines the use of various urban planning tools to mitigate these effects. Heat stress and heat-related diseases are significant risks caused by rising temperatures in cities, therefore, green, blue, and gray solutions are analyzed to reduce these risks in urban areas. The study is based on a literature review and a case study of the Hornsberg area in Stockholm, on which an interview was also conducted. The results from the study suggest that a combination of green, blue, and gray solutions can work together to reduce temperatures in urban environments. Green solutions such as parks, trees, green roofs and walls can help to lower temperatures but also improve air quality in cities, creating healthier living environments. Blue solutions include various water features in cities, where this study primarily focused on the effects of lakes, ponds, canals and streams. Blue solutions have shown varying effects on temperature regulation in urban environments, which means that further investigation is necessary to understand their full impact. Two aspects not considered during the literature review but which emerged as potential solutions during the case study, were fountains and rainwater retention basins. For these solutions, further studies need to be reviewed. Gray solutions, such as the use of reflective materials, have proven to contribute to cooler cities. Overall, the results indicate that the integration of green, blue, and gray solutions is important for managing heatwaves and mitigating their effects, primarily the risk of health-related issues. These planning tools are important for sustainable development and creating resilient cities.

The provision of remedial academic support to first-year dental therapy students at Medunsa

Mokgokong, Martha Puleng Tokozile 28 February 2007 (has links)
The cost of education at institutions of higher education is very high and is exacerbated by the failure rate among first-year students, in particular. Their inability to cope with academic demands is largely due to their lack of preparation as a result of poor schooling in previously disadvantaged secondary schools. In the light of this, this study was undertaken to determine the academic needs of and strategies for remedial academic support to first-year dental therapy students at Medunsa. A literature review provided a theoretical foundation and highlighted various factors which impede effective study. An empirical investigation used a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches to explore the needs of first-year dental therapy students at Medunsa. The results corroborated the issues addressed by the literature as constraints to students' success. Diverse strategies for providing academic remedial support for first-year students were discussed based on the literature review and empirical investigation. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.

Lafleur, Martine 04 1900 (has links)
The importance of nursing in the health care system, both in terms of accessibility and quality and safety of patient care is well documented. In order to be able to fully exercise their role, nurses must be able to accomplish their full scope of practice. This applies to all nurses, including mental health nurses. However, research shows that nurses are unable to implement all the activities for which they have the training and experience. The aim of this study is to measure the actual scope of mental health nursing practice and to identify the influence of the level of training on this scope of practice. This study is based on the SCOP Model, from Déry et al. (2015), which states that certain job and individual characteristics, such as the level of training, can determine the actual nursing scope of practice. The deployment of this scope of practice can potentially influence professional satisfaction, quality of care and organizational factors such as accessibility, average lengths of stays and costs (Déry et al. 2015). A descriptive correlational design was used for this study. A questionnaire using a Likert scale was completed by nurses (n = 80) from a Quebec mental health Institute. Analysis of variance tests were used. The results show a sub-optimal deployment of the scope of nursing practice (4.24/6; E.T. = 0.63). The scope of practice results is the highest that has been measure with the ASCOP questionnaire. No significant differences were found between nurses with different levels of training F (3, 77) = 0.707, p = 0.551. These results can be explain by the nurses education level, the presence of a representation bias, a lack of statistical power or certain of the work characteristics. The results obtained in this study constitute initial empirical data on the subject. It is the only research measuring mental health nurses’ scope of practice with the ASCOP questionnaire and attempting to know the potential influence of level of training on scope of practice.

Das Staatsdenken von Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde / The philosophy on the state of Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde – Analogies and discrepancies in comparison to the oeuvre ‘The Notion of Politics’ of Carl Schmitt

Lambrecht, Cosima Winifred 07 May 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde and Carl Schmitt count among the most prominent experts for constitutional law within their eras. The two theoreticians were connected by an intensive personal relation. Thus, the research issue of the present thesis consists on the exploration of the possibility to also deduce interrelations between the theories on the state of both scientists. For this reason analogies but also necessarily discrepancies within the ways of thinking of the liberal expert for constitutional law Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde in comparison to the conservative state theoretician Carl Schmitt are elaborated. In conclusion, the question shall be answered, whether it is possible to receive the ideas on the state of Carl Schmitt outlined in his major oeuvre ‘The Notion of Politics’ (partly) in a liberal way.

Assisting Grade 12 learners in township schools to perform optimally : a case study in the Tshwane South District of Gauteng Province / Assisting Grade twelve learners in township schools to perform optimally

Mbuisa, Mahlatini 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to find solutions to problems relating to the fact that many township learners are not optimally prepared for the Grade 12 final examination resulting in them having limited possibilities for further studies and after-school employment. The main research question focused on how Grade 12 learners can be assisted to perform optimally in the final examination. A qualitative research approach was adopted using focus group interviews. School management team members and Grade 12 educators and learners from one township secondary school were selected as participants. The main factors that assist Grade 12 learners to perform optimally in the Grade 12 final examination relate to well executed leadership functions, competent teaching, learner commitment, effective policy implementation and sound school, home and township conditions. A school intervention programme that included formal studying by camping on the school grounds improved Grade 12 performance significantly. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Ed.
