Efficient Traffic Control Protocols for Vehicular Ad-Hoc NetworksBani Younes, Maram Younis Saleh January 2015 (has links)
Traffic efficiency applications over road networks have been investigated recently using VANETs. This area of research is primarily concerned with increasing the traffic fluency over road networks. In this thesis, we first propose an efficient and accurate protocol to detect congested road segments in a downtown area using VANETs. We refer to this protocol as the Efficient COngestion DEtection (ECODE) protocol. ECODE evaluates three different traffic characteristics of each road segment including traffic speed, traffic density, and the time required to travel the segment. Moreover, ECODE evaluates traffic characteristics and detects the congestion level in each direction of the road segment. In addition, we propose an intelligent, dynamic, distributed, and real-time path recommendations protocol. We refer to this protocol as Intelligent path reCOmenDation (ICOD) protocol. ICOD is the first path recommendation protocol that does not rely on a central database of gathered traffic data for each area of interest. Eliminating centralized behavior resolves bottleneck as well as single point of failure problems, which in turn
minimizes congestion and collision problems in VANETs. Furthermore, ICOD selects the path towards each destination in a hop-by-hop manner, which makes the turn decision at each road intersection more accurate and real-time. Different variants of ICOD are introduced that consider travel time, travel distance, fuel consumption, gas emissions, and context-awareness of each road segment parameters. Moreover, two traffic balancing mechanisms are proposed in this thesis to distribute traffic over the road network evenly, namely Bal-Traf and Abs-Bal. These mechanisms eliminate the highly congested road segment scenarios that are caused by the path recommendation protocol. Bal-Traf detects and eliminates the highly congested output road segment at each road intersection. However, Abs-Bal aims to keep the traffic density balanced among all output road segments at each road intersection. Finally, we propose an Intelligent Traffic Light Controlling (ITLC) algorithm to schedule the phases of each traffic light at isolated road intersections. This algorithm aims to decrease the queuing delay time of competing traffic flows and to increase the throughput of each signalized road intersection. ITLC has also been adapted in this thesis to the Arterial Traffic Lights (ATLs) algorithm for arterial road network scenarios. In ATLs the expected platoons on the arterial street are considered in the scheduling algorithm of each traffic light located on the arterial street coordinates. Transmitting packets among these traffic lights report the main characteristics of each predicted platoon.

The inflammatory process caused by smoking is related to different kinds of diseases such as pulmonary emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and atherosclerosis. In this scenario, an anti-inflammatory protein AnxA1 may represent a therapeutic alternative. For these reasons, the objective of this research was to analyze the effects of the mimetic peptide Ac2-26 of the AnxA1 protein, in a smoking model. Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups (n = 10/group). The groups of animals exposed to smoke were placed in a specific equipment of the Didactic and Experimental Research Unit (UDPE) of the Integrated Colleges Padre Albino (FIPA), and exposed to the burning of 10 cigarettes, one after another, 2x / day for 5 weeks. To evaluate the efficacy of Ac2-26, CS+Ac2-26 animals were administered intraperitoneally with peptide (1mg / kg), 1x / day, prior to first exposure to the cigarette. Group C was maintained in the same regimen, but in the absence of cigarette smoke or treatment. The rats were weighed and had blood pressure measured at the beginning and ending of the experiment. In the final period, pulmonary ventilation was verified through plethysmography and also performed ray-X images. The animals were euthanized and collected the alveolar bronchus (BAL) for quantification of inflammatory cells and cytokines, the blood for biochemical measurements of cytokines and hemoglobin and organs, lung and trachea, for histopathological and immunohistochemical studies. The physiological analyzes showed weight loss, increased blood pressure, reductions and in the pulmonary frequency and ventilation, as well as macroscopic alternative in the lung dimensions by X-ray images in group CS. While, in CS+Ac2-26, these values were similar to controls. The histopathological analyzes showed enlargement of the intra-alveolar spaces and increased lymphoid tissue (BALT), and loss of the cilia in the epithelium of the trachea in the CS group, compared to CS+Ac2-26 and C. Numerous lymphocytes and macrophages were observed in the BAL in CS, with significant reduction of the cells after treatment. In the quantifications of inflammatory cells in the tissues, macrophages and mast cells were increased in the CS+Ac2-26 group. The immunohistochemical analyzes of the lung and trachea showed lower expression of AnxA1, COX-2 and MMP-9 in C and CS+Ac2-26 animals. The dosages of cytokines and chemokine indicated incr ease in the supernatant of lung macerate, blood plasma and BAL in the F group and reduction of these mediators levels in C and CS+Ac2-26 groups. Also, the biochemical blood measurements showed that treatment with the peptide caused an increase in hemoglobin and glucose concentrations and reduction of total cholesterol and Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) compared to untreated animals. Our results evidenced a protective action of the Ac2-26 mimetic peptide in the COPD model, by attenuating the inflammatory process caused by exposure to cigarette smoke, which opens new perspectives for the treatment of smoking-related diseases.

Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Tecnologia, Sa?de e Sociedade, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2016. / The water availability and its due quality sets essential factor to the human development, and, therefore, the evaluation of the water quality represents, amongst others, a efficient tool to water resources management. Set?bal river is the only perennial river in the Jenipapo de Minas, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The construction of Setubal Dam in the county was an enterprise that aimed to maintain the Setubal River?s perennial, and, consequently promote the socioeconomic development through the usage of the water for irrigated agriculture. The water quantity by its own, it is not enough to promote development, it must, also, the available water be guarantee with a due quality. Thereby, this work had as objective to characterize Set?bal river waters quality, using the Quality Index Water (QIW) and the patterns settled down in the CONAMA?s 351/2005 Resolution, as well, analyze the socioeconomic effects from the increased availability of water sources from the construction of Set?bal Dam, in the Jenipapo de Minas - MG. The data that shows a possible socioeconomic development in the county was collected in public agencies. To characterize water quality, six samples were collected between 2015 June and 2016 June, in strategic spots, with these parameters being analyzed: hydrogen potential (Hp), Dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nitrate (NO3-), phosphor (PO4-3), chlorides, turbidity, total solids, total iron, total coliforms and Escherichia coli. The QIW was calculated from the methodology proposed by Instituto Mineiro de Gest?o das ?guas (IGAM). According to the results, it is concluded that the increased availability of water resources has fostered the development of irrigated agriculture with the raise in the numbers of irrigation projects and the agricultural productivity. Set?bal river water, in the sampling points, presented a QIW predominantly middle level, but with some variables in disagreement with the CONAMA?s 351/2005 Resolution, like high iron and turbidity concentrations, what put that two sampling stations in disagreement with the river framework, which is Class 2.

Conservation In Rural Areas: Case Study In Orenli Village In Kepsut, BalikesirYesilyurt, Gulsum Hande 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Rural settlements are formed according to local people&rsquo / s needs, harmonious with the land form and the climate, and have a rich variety of buildings using local material. But changes in lifestyle due to urbanization and tourism, socio economic degradation and poor living conditions have a negative effect on rural heritage and as a result, rural settlements become inharmonious with vernacular architecture and current lifestyle. Besides, due to its geographical and quantitative vastness, rural heritage is rarely recorded and legislations for rural settlements are so inadequate in Turkey.
The aim of this thesis is to understand the values of rural heritage and suggest proposals for the conservation of these areas. As a case study Ö / renli Village in Kepsut, Balikesir was selected and architectural characteristics of traditional buildings, lifestyles of local people in Ö / renli Village, written and unwritten rules of this rural settlement were analyzed. In conclusion, recommendations were done for conserving rural heritage while trying to meet the local people&rsquo / s arising needs.

Purification and quantitative description of Rhodococcus equi IgG designed for aerosol nebulization to foalsBeebe, Dale 03 August 2011 (has links)
The objective of this study was to purify IgG from commercially available hyperimmune Rhodococcus equi plasma and to assess the delivery of IgG as an aerosol to the equine lung. IgG was purified from plasma, and the IgG concentration of both the plasma and the purified IgG was determined by ELISA. The purified IgG was aerosolized using a vibrating mesh nebulizer and aerosol characterization was performed using cascade impaction. The purified IgG was nebulized to six healthy adult horses in order to assess the efficacy of pulmonary delivery and safety of administration. Bronchoalveolar fluid was retrieved endoscopically using a low volume technique prior to aerosolization (time 0) and at 0.5, 4 and 24 hours post aerosolization. The BAL fluid IgG concentration was determined and cytologic analysis was performed.
The IgG concentrations of the plasma and purified IgG were 2,175 mg/dL and 1,145 mg/dL, respectively. The MMAD of the purified IgG aerosol was 4.7 microns. The mean BAL fluid IgG concentration increased 61% from 19.33 µg/dL at time 0 to 31.5 µg/dL at 0.5 hours, but this increase was not significant (P=0.603). No significant change was observed in inflammatory cell numbers over time or at any time point during the study. This study demonstrated that IgG antibodies were purified at a concentration acceptable for nebulization, and that the nebulization unit generated aerosol particles from the IgG solution of appropriate size for pulmonary delivery. Nebulization of purified IgG to adult horses was well tolerated and caused no local or systemic adverse effects. / Master of Science

Berättelsens tid tenderar mot noll : Hur tid, plats och miljö framställs i Kristina Lugns IdlaflickornaPalmström, Sofia January 2016 (has links)
This essay examines through narratology how time and space are conveyed to the reader in the play Idlaflickorna by author Kristina Lugn. I seek answers in the text that has no stage directions and no description of characters or the space where the action takes place. The information given about time and space in the dialogue is contradictory. By using Mieke Bals Narratology – Introduction to the Theory of Narrative with focus on the chapters on time and space in story and fabula. I suggest that time is not only a tool to construct the text but the main theme that ties the story together. The contradictory information about where the characters are, create a new space in-between or parallel to the story being told. I have also used Gérard Genettes definition of narrative anachronism to further describe the construction of the story and what effects narrative anachrony has on the fabula.

Jean-Baptiste Arban, du cornet à la baguette : un musicien français du XIXè siècle aux multiples talents / Jean-Baptiste Arban, from the cornet to the conductor's baton : a French multi-talented musician of the 19th centuryCanin, Xavier 25 January 2016 (has links)
Few brass musicians today are not familiar with the name of Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825-1889). However, his commitment to the cornet as well as to the Conservatoire may have overshadowed his other activities: composition, musical education, conducting and entrepreneurial actions. In order to make them known, we have managed to collect substantial information from private and public archives and extracts of contemporary press. Such documents have allowed us to bring to the fore all the events connected with his life in Paris from the July Monarchy to the Third Republic. With about 700 entries, this catalogue illustrates how rich his musical production was (mainly linked to dance and entertainment). Thanks to such a review of the atypical career of this famous figure of music in the 19th century, going from his youth in a family of firework makers in Lyon to conducting dance at the Opera House, the writer of this thesis expects to make a significant contribution to the history of French society in those days.
