This work aims to study the phenomenon of the transient diffusion of heat and mass in solids with geometric form of an infinite cylinder. The study presents solutions for the diffusion equation with boundary condition of the third kind. Numerical tools for describing the diffusion of heat and mass in the ways mentioned were developed. For the numerical solutions proposed, the one-dimensional diffusion equation was discretized using the finite volume method with a fully implicit formulation, using cylindrical coordinates. For the numerical solution in cylindrical coordinates, two software have been developed on the Windows platform, one for mass migration and one for the heat transfer, using the Fortran programming language, Quick Win Application option. The software was validated using solutions known for cylinders with both constant and variable thermophysical parameters. It can be concluded that the developed tools were appropriate for the study of diffusion problems in general. The above tools were used to describe the process of drying whole banana. In the description, we considered the volume and diffusivities with variables values. It can be concluded that the proposed model to describe the process showed excellent statistical indicators to describe the kinetics of heat and mass transfer. One can also conclude that the exclusion of the vapor heating in the calculations performed does not significantly alter the results. In addition that using the latent heat of free water instead of this property in the product does not produce significant effects. On the other hand, discard the latent heat of vaporization and the consideration of density and specific heat of the product as constant properties should be avoided.

[pt] DESENVOLVIMENTO DE UMA METODOLOGIA PARA CARACTERIZAÇÃO TRIDIMENSIONAL DE ESPUMAS DE POLIURETANO A BASE DE POLIOLS DE ORIGEM VEGETAL / [en] DEVELOPMENT OF A METHODOLOGY FOR THREE DIMENSIONAL CHARACTERIZATION OFR POLYURETHANE FOAMS BASED ON POLYOLS OF VEGETAL ORIGIN

LORENLEYN DE LA HOZ ALFORD 30 September 2021 (has links)
[en] In this thesis, a methodology was developed for the three-dimensional characterization of polyurethane (PU) foams produced from polyols of vegetable origin. Foams obtained from the banana stem and leaf were analyzed. X ray microtomography (μCT) associated with in-situ mechanical tests and digital image processing and analysis (PADI) was used. A commercial in situ test chamber was used and a specific chamber was also developed for this thesis. The three-dimensional images obtained were evaluated by traditional ADI techniques and by the Volumetric Image Correlation (CVD) technique. The standard sequence involved noise reduction and the watersheds method to segment the individual cells that make up the foam structure. Thus, it was possible to quantify different parameters of size (volume, average diameter) and shape (aspect ratio, sphericity) of each cell in 3D and to statistically compare the samples. The CVD technique made it possible to correlate subvolumes of the foams at different stages of the compression process, revealing some aspects of the microscopic stress concentration mechanism. A traditional compression test made it possible to choose the two samples with the highest strength limits (CB8 and FB6). These samples were submitted to the compression test in situ and analyzed for different strain values. The FB6 sample had about 5 times more cells than the CB8 sample, with an average diameter about 2X smaller. Considering the first deformation stages (0, 0,5 and 1 mm), which were identical for both samples, the number of cells increased 5,9 percent for CB8 and 1,7 percent for FB6, while the average volume decreased 2,6 percent and 1,9 percent, respectively. The shape measurements pointed to non-equiaxial cells (aspect ratio and sphericity close to 0,4), with no significant changes during the tests.

Do, Dang Giap, Dang, Thi Kim Thuy, Nguyen, Thi Huyen Trang, Nguyen, Thi Duoc, Tran, Trong Tuan, Duong, Duc Hieu 27 February 2019 (has links)
Nano silver has positive effects on the growth and development of in vitro plants. In this study, shoots of in vitro banana with 1 cm in length were cut off the tip which was cultured in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 30 g.L-1 sucrose, 15% coconut water (v/v), 5 mg. L-1 6-Benzyladenine (BA), 8 g.L-1 agar and nano silver (1, 3, 5, 7 ppm). After twenty days cultured, shoots in the medium supplemented with 1 ppm nano silver have grown well with 8.4 times multiplication and total chlorophyll content (2.05 mg.g-1), three-fold higher than in the control experiment. All new shoot samples were cultivated in a new medium with same component and supplemented with 1 mg.L-1 active charcoal to study root formation. The results showed that the best medium for root development was the one with 3 ppm nano silver. In this treatment, the height of shoots, number of leaves, number of roots, root length, fresh weight, dry weight and total chlorophyll content were 2.90 cm, 4.40 leaves per explant, 7.10 roots per explant, 7.7 cm per explant, 1.47 g per explant, 0.136 g and 3.17 mg.g-1, respectively. In vitro healthy seedlings with equal size were grown in nurseries. Different concentrations of nano silver (5, 10, 15 ppm) were sprayed on once a week. After 30 days, the highest quality result was observed at concentration 5 ppm with shoot of 4.86 cm in length, 5.20 leaves per shoot, 4.60 roots per explant, root of 4.87 cm in length and 3.07 g per explant in fresh weight.

Land use change in a globalised world

Friis, Cecilie 23 August 2017 (has links)
The global demand for land resources has increased the pressures on land, especially in resource-rich frontier regions. Transnational land acquisitions constitute one of these pressures that currently shape land use change and threaten land access and land-based livelihoods in rural areas. This thesis contributes to create a better understanding of the complex processes involved in such land acquisitions in two ways. First, it examines a recent boom in banana cultivation in Luang Namtha Province, Lao PDR driven by Chinese investors leasing land from Lao farmers and exporting the bananas to China. Second, it critically engages with the emerging telecoupling framework proposed in Land System Science as an analytical framework for dealing with distal causal interactions. Based on ethnographic fieldwork and using qualitative analyses, the thesis examines two plantations in a small village and traces the actors, mechanisms and processes driving the banana expansion. Using the telecoupling framework as a heuristic device, the study illuminates how multiple and co-constitutive economic, environmental, political and discursive interactions influence the banana expansion. Furthermore, the in-depth place-based analyses reveal how different contextual factors ground and shape these interactions in this particular location. In this case, the distal interactions are mediated through a cross-border network of Chinese investors with social ties in the local area, as well as in the fruit market in China. The study shows that the investors’ strategies to obtain access to the land combined with the resulting destructive land use conversion amount to an alienation of land from the villagers. By engaging empirically, methodologically and conceptually with the telecoupling framework, the thesis advances the discussion on telecoupling by demonstrating the value of qualitative analysis for capturing some of the more elusive and immaterial interactions, as well as potential feedbacks influencing land use change in a globalised world.

Improving fruit soluble solids content in melon (Cucumis melo L.) (reticulatus group) in the Australian production system

Long, Robert Llewellyn, bizarrealong@hotmail.com January 2005 (has links)
Total soluble solids (TSS) is a reliable indicator of melon eating quality, with a minimum standard of 10% recommended. The state of Australian melon production with respect to this quality criterion was considered within seasons, between growing districts and over seasons. It was concluded that improvement in agronomic practice and varietal selection is required to produce sweeter melons. The scientific literature addressing melon physiology and agronomy was summarised, as a background to the work that is required to improve melon production practices in Australia. The effect of source sink manipulation was assessed for commercially grown and glasshouse grown melon plants. The timing of fruit thinning, pollination scheduling, the application of a growth inhibitor and source biomass removal were assessed in relation to fruit growth and sugar accumulation. Results are interpreted against a model in which fruit rapidly increase in weight until about two weeks before harvest, with sugar accumulation continuing as fruit growth ceases. Thus treatment response is very dependant on timing of application. For example, fruit thinning at 25 days before harvest resulted in further fruit set and increased fruit weight but did not impact on fruit TSS (at 9.8%, control 9.3%), while thinning at 5 days before harvest resulted in a significant (Pless than 0.05) increase in fruit TSS (to 10.8%, control 9.3%) and no increase in fruit weight or number. A cost/ benefit analysis is presented, allowing an estimation of the increase in sale price required to sustain the implementation of fruit thinning. The effect of irrigation scheduling was also considered with respect to increasing melon yield and quality. To date, recommended practice has been to cause an irrigation deficit close to fruit harvest, with the intent of 'drying out' or 'stressing' the plant, to 'bring on' maturity and increase sugar accumulation. Irrigation trials showed that keeping plants stress-free close to harvest and during harvest, facilitated the production of sweeter fruit. The maintenance of a TSS grade standard using either batch based (destructive) sampling or (non-invasive) grading of individual fruit is discussed. On-line grading of individual fruit is possible using near infrared spectroscopy (NIR), but the applicability of the technique to melons has received little published attention. Tissue sampling strategy was optimised, in relation to the optical geometry used (in commercial operation in Australia), both in terms of the diameter and depth of sampled tissue. NIR calibration model performance was superior when based on the TSS of outer, rather than inner mesocarp tissue. However the linear relationship between outer and middle tissue TSS was strong (r2 = 0.8) in immature fruit, though less related in maturing fruit (r2 = 0.5). The effect of fruit storage (maturation/senescence) on calibration model performance was assessed. There was a negligible effect of fruit cold storage on calibration performance. Currently, the agronomist lacks a cost-effective tool to rapidly assess fruit TSS in the field. Design parameters for such a tool were established, and several optical front ends compared for rapid, though invasive, analysis. Further, for visualisation of the spatial distribution of tissue TSS within a melon fruit, a two-dimensional, or hyper-spectral NIR imaging system based on a low cost 8-bit charge coupled device (CCD) camera and filter arrangement, was designed and characterised.

E importante observar o comportamento de demanda de irrigação como forma de se avaliar atribuições de tarifa de água bruta, evitando possíveis distorções económicas decorrentes de climas diferenciados em uma mesma bacia hidrográfica / It is considcred, in the present work, an evaluation of costs of energy and water. inside o; the agricultural irrigated planning, getting at first the raw demands from water and energy for the cultures of the dwarfed coconut (Cocos nucifera L.), papaya (Carica papaya) and pacovã banana (Musa spp) in 14 cities from northeast Brazil and if used two pressured systems, through a simulation of agronomic project of irrigation. The lesser foresecn annual water consumption for irrigation was in the locality of Mamanguape, PB, needing itself only 37.4%; 35.5% and 41.4% respectively, for the cultures of dwarfed coconut, papaya and pacovã Banana, based on the consumption gotten in the locality of bigger consumption (Petrolina, PE). Areas with good chance for irrigation had gotten the same using electropumps (7.5 CV and 22 outflow of m3 h"1) for the cultures of dwarfed coconut, papaya and pacovã banana, respectively, of 13.65 ha (located) and 4.54 ha (aspersion); 9,45 ha (located) and 5,18 ha (aspersion) and 6.25 ha (located) and 3.63 ha (Aspersion). The increasing demand of water and energy practically occurred combined by the scale of climatic classification of Hargreaves (1974b), whcre the city of Mamanguape PB (Dry-Wet climate), covered the lesser needs for complementation, following with Pacatuba, SE, Maceió, AE, Aracaju, SE, Natal, RN, Campina Grande, PB, later the cities Acaraú, CE, Aracati, CE and Touros, RN of Semi-Arid climate, Canindé do São Francisco, SE, Sousa, PB and Jaguaribe, CE, with Arid climate and Açu, RN and Petrolina, PE classified as of Very Arid climate. The culture of the dwarfed coconut would be punished economically by the water taxes, because of the lesser cost of maintenance related to the others two cultures in analysis. The values gotten through this study could be used as parameters for irrigated agricultural planning, with bigger trustworthiness, when the gotten averagcs, will be grouped by climate and the coefficients of variation will present low values (lesser than 10%), since they have similar sizing characteristics to the ones of this work. It is important to observe the behavior of irrigation demand as a way of evaluating attributions of raw water taxes, avoiding possible economic distortions due to differentiated climates in one same hidrografic basin.

Alternatives agro-écologiques à l’usage d’intrants chimiques dans les bananeraies plantains : Le cas de deux régions de la Caraïbe : Guadeloupe et Haïti / Agroecological alternatives to the use of chemical inputs in banana plantains : The case of Caribbean regions : Guadeloupe and Haïti

Deloné, Brunise 01 October 2014 (has links)
Plantain (Musa paradisiaca) is the staple food of millions of people worldwide and its cropping generates ongoing revenues for many farmers who are planting small or medium size areas. As in other tropical regions, plantain cultivation in Guadeloupe and Haiti is under heavy parasitic constraints terrestrial (plant-parasitic nematodes and banana weevil) as well as aerial (black Sigatoka in particular). Conventional means of control based on the use of synthetic products which adverse effects on the environment (soil, water, animals ...) as on human health are not bearable any more. It is thus urgent to think about agroecological solutions allowing to restore the biological balances, to maintain good soil quality and optimal plantain cropping systems. This is the ultimate goal of this thesis which couples the realization of an agroecological diagnosis in peasants’ plots, and the test of agroecological alternatives in semi-controlled conditions. To do this, a typology of plantain cropping systems was carried out from an agrienvironmental survey in the two study areas. It allowed to select 23 plots in Guadeloupe and 12 in Haiti in which an agroecological diagnosis was implemented. Based on this diagnosis and the research of agroecological alternatives to the use of chemicals, a field experiment was set up in Guadeloupe, in an experimental station allowing the test of three innovative practices for plantain cultivation (alone and combined), namely : i) the introduction of a cover-crop Paspalum notatum for weed control while reducing the use of herbicides ; ii) the input of worms’ compost to control plant-parasitic nematodes specific to plantain and to fertilize it ; iii) the use of healthy “PIF” plants (plants issued from stem fragments) free from telluric pests (nematodes and weevil’s larvaes). The typology of plantains cropping systems shows: i) in Guadeloupe the previous crops are: fallow pineapple and plantain predominate with a low level of intensification (low and infrequent chemical inputs) or high (high and frequent chemical inputs); ii) in Haiti, the previous crops are: fallow, plantain and cassava predominate with a low level or no intensification at all (no inputs). The results of the agroecological analysis show that : i) when the level of intensification is low, perennial plantain and pineapple as previous crops help maintaining a good soil quality and a good regulation of the telluric pests ; ii) when the level of intensification is strong, the soil engineers drastically reduce, while the density of telluric parasites increases without affecting good levels of instantaneous yields (plots where the previous crop is pineapple or mostly fallow) ; iii) when the fertilization is totally missing, it decreases the biological activity of the soil furthermore the plantain yields, exacerbated by the choice of the previous crop (cassava or plantain), in connection with soils and climate constraints and the black Sigatoka caused by Mycosphaerella fijiensis, especially in the Haitian plots ; iv) the crop succession plantain/plantain is the most critical regarding the plantain’s cropping, because whatever the level of intensification, the yields remain relatively low in connection with a degradation of the health state, compared to other previous crops. The driving of an experiment in a research station shows that on the scale of one year, the three tested innovative practices allow maintaining a good soils quality. Healthy plants "PIF" have a better health state (absence of plant parasitic nematodes in the roots) which helps a significant increase of the yields. Cover-crop P. notatum helps the weeds and the soil pests control and favors the improvement of soil biological activity and plantain yields. Worms’ compost contributes to the maintenance of a better soils quality while allowing the regulation of the populations of plant-parasitic nematodes of the plantains.
