Functional movement screen as a predictor of injury in high school basketball athletes

Sorenson, Eric A., 1980- 12 1900 (has links)
xiii, 89 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Participation in athletics includes an inherent risk of becoming injured that is related to the nature of the games and activities of the players. Current literature reports that approximately seven million high school students participate in sports yearly in the United States and, during the 2005-2006 sport seasons, 1.4 million injuries were reported. Considering this high number of injuries, there is little doubt that definitive research into the determination of factors that might help predict the degree of injury risk associated with sport participation is warranted. Despite common association of variables such as joint laxity, range of motion, strength and balance with injury, these traditional measures have not proven to be reliable predictors of vulnerability. Consequently, attempts have been made to identify practical methods that may better permit identification of individuals who show a high likelihood of injury during athletic competition. This study examined one such system, the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), which utilizes measures of mobility and stability to permit its developers to assert that it can be used to practically and accurately identify vulnerable athletes. Critical data on inter-rater and intra-rater performance were first obtained on a team of athletic trainers to ensure that they could reliably execute the testing methods. Following confirmation of this fact, 112 high school basketball athletes were screened with the FMS and their injuries (non-contact neuromusculoskeletal tissue damage in school-sanctioned basketball) were tracked throughout an entire season. Data analysis to determine if a commonly-used FMS cutoff score of less than 14 out of 21 could identify vulnerable athletes revealed that this value was not significantly related to the likelihood of sustaining an injury. Furthermore, logistic regression revealed that none of the individual predictors (gender, FMS movements, and movement asymmetries) were significant predictors of injury susceptibility. The results indicate that, despite the fact that multiple evaluators and trials can be practically used to evaluate FMS scores in a large group of high school basketball athletes, the test does not appear to be a valid tool in assessing injury risk in this population during an entire season. / Committee in charge: Gary Klug, Chairperson, Human Physiology; Paul van Donkelaar, Member, Human Physiology; Andrew Lovering, Member, Human Physiology; Roland Good, Outside Member, Special Education and Clinical Sciences

The prevalence and profile of musculoskeletal pain in elite wheelchair basketball players of different point classifications in South Africa

Mateus, Isabel Sita Maharaj January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Technology: Chiropractic, Department of Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / Background There has been a remarkable increase in the participation of sport for athletes with disabilities. Consequently, there have been many international studies on injuries in athletes which have shown a high prevalence in wheelchair basketball, largely attributed to the fast-paced, high intensity nature of the sport. This sport has grown worldwide including South Africa, however, very little research has been published on South African wheelchair basketball players and more research is, therefore, needed. Aim To determine the prevalence and profile of musculoskeletal pain in elite wheelchair basketball players of different point classifications in South Africa. Hypothesis 1: Upper extremity (including neck and back) pain is experienced more commonly in lower point classified wheelchair basketball players than in higher point classified players. Hypothesis 2: Lower extremity pain is experienced more commonly in higher point classified players than in lower point classified players Method This study was a quantitative, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study. The questionnaire comprised of sub-sections on demographics and disability characteristics; activity levels pertaining to wheelchair basketball and other sport/physical activity; the prevalence of pain and the impact thereof on wheelchair basketball and/or activities of daily living. This questionnaire was administered to 48 wheelchair basketball players who were competing in the 2015 Supersport League. A response rate of 70% was decided as the lower limit cut-off for statistical power. Results Fourty-three participants responded yielding an 89.58% response rate. The mean age of participants was 33.3 (SD:9.5) years and the majority of participants (n=35) were male and African (n=29). Out of the 43 participants, 79.1% (n=34) used mobility devices, the majority (n=20) used wheelchairs. Most of the participants (n=41) played wheelchair basketball for more than five years and 32 participants did not participate in other sport. Almost half of the participants (n=25) experienced musculoskeletal pain in the last twelve months or at present, 75% of whom (n=12) visited a Physiotherapist for the pain. More than half of these participants (n=15; 60%) reported that the pain negatively affected their basketball performance. It was established that arm pain occurred frequently in lower point classified players (1.0-2.5 point players) and that hand and wrist pain was also more prevalent in lower point players than in higher point players. The prevalence of lower extremity pain was low and there was no statistically significant difference between higher and lower point classified players. Conclusions and Recommendations The finding that upper extremity pain occurred more frequently in lower point classified players was in keeping with the first hypothesis (the null hypothesis was, therefore, rejected). The second hypothesis was, however, rejected (and the null hypothesis was, therefore, accepted) as lower extremity pain did not occur more frequently in higher point classified players than in lower point classified players. The Eta scores may have been higher and may have shown a much larger than typical relationship between point classification and the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain had there been a larger sample size. Notwithstanding this limitation, it is a challenge to obtain a significantly larger sample size due to the nature and limited number of participants in this sport. More studies are warranted on this group of individuals, as a large number experienced pain which affected more than half of the participants’ performance in wheelchair basketball. These studies are important for the future success of the South African players and the sport in South Africa. / M

Jaunųjų krepšininkų greitumo jėgos savybės kitimas fizinių krūvių ir atsigavimo po jų metu / The changes in acceleration of the strength and physical charges and becoming well again of the young basketball players

Momkauskas, Saulius 15 May 2006 (has links)
It was investigatet the indexes of physical charges and their changes among the basketball players of 15–16 years old. The survey was done in January and February, 2006 and there were 15 young basketballers. The aim of the survey was the changes of the young players in the acceleration of the physical strength and becoming well again. According to the pecularities of the phases of the young players and the importance of the physical strength there was an actual research in this problem, that is, to ascertain the changes of the indexesof the accelaration of the strength pointing at various physical charges and becoming well afterwards. The aims were to ascertain the hight of the players jump (hp90, Dj90 and Dj135), as well as their changes before the charge and after it, and becoming well afterwards, then to ascertain the tiredness of the muscles, the composition of the skeleton, the changes of the height of the jumps at the maximal intensivity, and to ascertain the pain of the muscles. During the warming – up the players did three experimental jumps in these ways: hp90, Dj90, Dj135. Later, the young basketball players had to do three control jumps. Then, there was a 1 minute charge test in maximum power series of the jumps. After that, they did three control jumps in all the described ways. Then, the young players had a rest for one hour. After that they had a warming – up and then three control jumps. A contact platform was used to ascertain the height of the jump with the... [to full text]

Lietuvos merginų krepšinio rinktinių 1990 – 1992 metų gimimo krepšininkių rengimas, fizinių galių ir techninio parengtumo kaita per metus / The lithuanian basketball team of girl players born from 1990 - 1992 physical powers and technical readiness per year

Bankauskas, Marius 24 September 2008 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / While preparing the young feminine basketball players who can participate in various age championships and later masters of sport for the national team, it is important to observe the technical level of players, to analyse their physical development, functional abilities and annual training cycle. The aim of the research is to analyse the annual training cycle of Lithuanian feminine combined team (years of birth 1990 - 1992), their physical capacity, development, technical preparation and the change of the mentioned factors during the year. It is fixed that the young Olympic Lithuanian basketball players made a progress in physical abilities during the season and the end of the season reached a higher level. The static power and the anaerobic muscular power which were influenced by acceleration during the training and competition, and the frequency of motions achieved the suitable level for the basketball players. The single muscular contract power also increased, bet this muscular power has not achieved the appropriate level for the basketball players. After defining the body weight it was obvious that the average team weight increased in more grease than in muscles. At the end of the season the results of technical training were better than the beginning of the season. We established that in the given age group and corresponds the recommendation of tutors but the number of hours for special physical training should be increased.

Kayal, Kalle, Hallesson, Ida January 2022 (has links)
Metod: Metoden utformades och följde riktlinjerna enligt Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Sammanlagt inkluderades 5 studier i litteraturöversikten. Resultat: Totalt 5 artiklar inkluderades i denna studie.
