Beginner principals need support through a mentoring and coaching program to ensure effective curriculum management and to develop as curriculum leaders. The aim of the study was to determine the need of and the requirements for mentoring and coaching programs to ensure support in effective curriculum management. A comprehensive literature study was done and resulted in the success of mentoring and coaching programs and the focus pointing to effective curriculum management and specifically curriculum leadership in South Africa. The results from the literature study guided the empirical study through combined research. The focus fell on the roles, expectations, problems and support of beginner principals, curriculum management and leadership and the need of and the requirements for mentoring and coaching programs.
Empirically it was dicovered that beginner principals are not supported efficiently as curriculum managers and curriculum leaders. Mentoring and coaching will address this need.
The requirements of mentoring and coaching programs consist of:
(1) Compulsary mentoring and coaching programs for all beginner principals;
(2) Experienced principals as mentors;
(3) Approved mentors who should receive training;
(4) The beginner principal being allowed to choose his/her own mentor;
ontwikkeling as kurrikulumleiers ondersteun word me. Mentorskap- en
afrigtingsprogramme sal hierdie behoefte aanspreek.
(1) Verpligte mentorskap- en afrigtingsprogram vir aile beginnerprinsipale;
(2) Die gebruik van ervare prinsipale as mentors;
(3) Goedgekeurde mentors wat opleiding ontvang;
( 4) 'n Keuse deur die beginnerprinsipaal ten opsigte van sy/haar mentor;
(5) Mentors wat kurrikulumkundiges is. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Onderwysbestuur)

Guidelines for an effective staff induction programme at a special school in Gauteng : a case studyKempen, Maria Elizabeth 06 1900 (has links)
This case study explores the experiences of eight newly appointed teachers at a school for intellectually disabled learners. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to interpret interview data.
The literature study investigates the phenomenon of staff turnover and includes key literature themes such as adult learning theories of Senge and Vygotski, the life cycle of a teacher, the special school context and problems and needs experienced by beginning teachers.
The key findings of the research were that beginning special education teachers experienced various problems and needs but that, with well planned structured support, these problems could successfully be overcome.
The researcher has developed a set of guidelines, which could be used in developing a staff induction programme, aimed at raising the effectiveness of newly appointed teachers at a school for intellectually disabled learners. This research once again emphasizes the need for a well planned, structured induction programme. / Further Teacher Education / M. Ed. (Education Management)

Experiences of induction by beginner educators in Bochum East Circuit, Limpopo provinceMatsebane, Thobja Marcus 09 1900 (has links)
Induction for teacher development is important for quality teaching and learning to take place in schools. The process of induction should be well-structured so that it is not mistaken as just an orientation to school procedures; it should be well-planned and implemented for the purposes of professional development and support (Rolley, 2001). The main aim of this study was to investigate beginner educators’ experiences of the induction process for professional development in the Bochum East Circuit of Limpopo Province. The assumption was that if schools are held accountable for learner performance, then support measures in terms of induction should be provided to newly appointed educators. Poor performance or educator turnover can sometimes be ascribed to inadequate interventions or the design of educator induction programmes. Although educators may have received the best training at university or training college, they still need to adjust to the realities of classrooms.
To achieve the aim of the study, a qualitative research approach was followed to collect data through semi-structured interviews. The study is ensconced in the Educator Development Theory which acknowledges that educator preparation is rarely sufficient to provide all the knowledge and skills necessary for successful teaching. A great deal of knowledge and many skills are, mostly, acquired while on the job and principals should, therefore, adequately induct newly appointed educators. Four beginner educators and two principals from average performing primary schools were purposively sampled in the Bochum East Circuit of the Limpopo Province. A thematic analysis was carried out to generate themes that addressed the problem of the study. The findings from participant responses revealed differences in an understanding of the induction process. Support from the principal, HoDs and fellow colleagues were considered to be part of induction. Recommendations include that educators should be given continuous professional development through standardised induction programmes which could be adjusted to the needs of the school. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Etude de l'entrée dans le métier d'enseignants néo-titulairesdu second degré en contexte d'éducation prioritaire : activités, expériences et trajectoires professionnelles / Study of teacher career initiation in the context of priority education : activities, experiences and career trajectoriesLlorca, Marie-estelle 30 September 2013 (has links)
This study is concerned with the field of cognitive ergonomics and looks at teacher career initiation in the context of priority education: activities, experiences and career trajectories. Drawing on the semio-logical framework for the analysis of course of experience (Theureau, 2004), this study seeks to describe the dynamics of professional engagement in a variety of contexts (in an out of the classroom).The study was carried out over one school year with five beginner teachers from four subject areas in a priority education secondary school in the Créteil local authority. Different types of data were collected and analyzed: a) audio and video recordings of classroom activity, b) self-confrontation data pertaining to these recordings, c) data from reflective logs, d) data from interviews re-assessing situations pertaining to the information from logs. The analysis of key content mobilized by the teachers led to an understanding of their situated activity and enabled the identification of features relating to their “own worlds” progressing over time (concerning their concerns, their expectations, their knowledge, their emotions). Results show how the professional activity of the teachers is built up in various stages according to alternate phases of ease / difficulty, stability and instability, self-preservation and a quest for greater efficiency in their professional activities. Dynamic changes in the relations with their own classroom situations are reflected in the construction of temporary and transitory moments of stability and in marked changes in their ways of perceiving and apprehending events in different professional contexts. Synthetic modeling of the teachers’ career trajectories shows a number of fluctuations in the process of professional acculturation.

The induction of novice teachers in community junior secondary schools in Gaborone, BotswanaDube, Wilhelminah S 30 November 2008 (has links)
This study focuses on the induction of novice teachers in Community Junior Secondary Schools (CJSS) in Gaborone, Botswana. The point of departure is that induction is an important factor that is essential to the success of every beginner teacher. It is the responsibility of the school management to provide comprehensive induction programmes that will support beginner teachers and retain them in the teaching profession. This problem was investigated by means of a literature study and an empirical investigation using a qualitative approach. A small sample of beginner teachers in six selected schools in Gaborone formed the sample for this study. Findings indicated that the extent to which novice teachers are given professional guidance and support in schools is not enough. It is recommended that induction programmes receive more priority in schools since the first year of teaching is the most important determiner in the teaching career of an individual. / Education management / M.Ed. Previous issue date: 2005-12-16 / The aim of this investigation is to analyze the professional learning of the Physical Education teachers in the first year of their careers in which they experienced an induction program with one mentor (author of this study). This investigation occurred because beginning the teacher s career implicates in a variety of experiences positive or not that can influence in the constitution of belief, knowledge and beginner teacher s pedagogical action. The impacts of this initial process in the profession can lead the teacher to construct different professional ways. The most radical one is giving up the teacher s career. Nevertheless, we can also clarify the immediate disillusion with the profession without quitting it, what can result in a professional practice unconcerned with the students learning. With the purpose of helping the professional beginning in a less negative way, offering support
and formative direction about learning and development of the profession and helping in the socialization with the scholar culture, the induction program with mentors are suggested. These programs are held in continuous formation and are
important because they can help beginner teachers by facilitating the construction of a support net and a link between initial formation and professional development
alongside the career. The theoric-metodological reference was based in the themes: professional learning teacher, professional development, teacher thinking, induction
program based in mentors, reflexive teacher and teachers narrative. To orientate this study a research-intervention was developed according to a collaborativeconstructive pattern of continuous formation and of interaction researcher-teacher.
The resource used to collect of dates was the diary of class and the semi-structured individual and collective interviews. The results showed that the teachers experienced a variety of emotions, personal and professional challenges. They had
difficulties to understand the students, the principal and the other teachers, the physical structure of school and the material of the classroom. However, as the time passed by, the young teachers understood the students, the principal and the other teachers better. In this learning process of understanding and being understood the teachers built several action strategies. They established routines, they made deals with the students, and they negotiate with the principal and the other teachers. The induction program with mentor contributed with the necessities which are part of the
beginning of teaching career and detailed elements that are a challenge to the process of continuous formation in general.
pedagógica do jovem profissional.

In my essay, I take as starting point stories where I experience that the school context does not take advantage of the possibilities offered by the youth leisure center in gathering information about the students’ knowledge development. In my text I am going to reflect upon my irritation, how I acted and why I acted in a certain way in different situations with students. The aim of my essay is to examine how can I, in my role as a youth leisure center educator act, so that my assessment of the students can be a complement to the school’s assessment. I am even going to investigate what possibilities and learning opportunities offer the youth leisure center in being a complement to the school’s assessment procedure of students. I my essay, I will reflect on my dilemma on the hand, and on the other hand, taking different approaches and points of view. I will discuss how I interpret my actions and experience myself, but also my colleagues in the situations with the students, linked to Dreyfus and Dreyfus’s model of skill acquisition, as well as analyze my attitude by using Aristotle’s concepts of wisdom and understanding. Further on, I will discuss how the youth leisure center can be a complement to school based on peer interaction in practice and development-pedagogical perspectives, as well as through analyzing various governing documents. I conclude my essay with a reflection on my research questions, and how I perceive my task as a youth leisure center teacher to collaborate with the school in assessing the students’ knowledge development. /
