Hybridity, Fluidity and Ingmar Bergman's Alternative Moral Picture : The ideological value of Fanny and Alexander (1983)

Zeng, Hainan January 2019 (has links)
Bergman has claimed that he does not have any ideological intention behind his films. He has also been generally criticized for his bourgeois outlook and lack of ideology. Among the vast amount of Bergman studies as well, the ideological aspect of Bergman’s films has been an under-researched area. This thesis will focus on the five-hour television version of Fanny and Alexander (Ingmar Bergman, 1983) and investigate the interrelationship between the formal features of narrative, character, music and their ideological functions, utilizing ideological and formalist approaches. The premise of this study is: films are cultural products that implicitly or explicitly carry ideological messages. Bergman’s films are no exception. Through the blend of contradictory elements in narrative and the representation of fluid subjectivity, Bergman’s cinematic vision provides an “alternative moral picture”, an expression coined by Hector Rodriguez, and functions as ideology critique. This thesis intends to shed more light on the ideological value embedded in Bergman’s films in general, and Fanny and Alexander in particular, and contribute to a comprehensive field of Bergman research.

Bergman space methods and integral means spectra of univalent functions

Sola, Alan January 2007 (has links)
We study universal integral means spectra of certain classes of univalent functions defined on subsets of the complex plane. After reformulating the definition of the integral means spectrum of a univalent function in terms of membership in weighted Bergman spaces, we describe the Hilbert space techniques that can be used to estimate universal means spectra from above. Finally, we show that the method of norm expansion used in that context can be applied in a more general setting to reproducing kernel spaces in order to explicitly compute kernel functions. / <p>QC 20101117</p>

Moments en géométrie algébrique réelle / Moments in real algebraic geometry

Ancona, Michele 26 November 2018 (has links)
It is well known that the number of real roots of a real degree d polynomial is at most d. In the 90s, E. Kostlan proved that the average number of real roots equals the square root of d, once we equip the space of polynomials with some natural Gaussian measure. This result has a geometric interpretation, in which the real polynomials are sections of a line bundle over the Riemann sphere. We can extend this study in a more general case of a real Riemann surface equipped with ample line bundle and study the expected value of the number of real zeros of a random section. In this thesis, we compute all the central moments of these random variables. As an application, we prove that the measure of the space of real sections whose number of real zeros deviates from the expected one goes to zeros, as the degree of the line bundle goes to infinity. In a second part, we present analogues results in real Hurwitz theory, in which we study the real critical points of a random branched covering of the Riemann sphere. We compute the expected value of this number and also all the central moments. The techniques we use are of analytique nature (Bergman kernel, L^2 estimates) and gometric one (Olver multispaces, coarea formula)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Mauro Gomes da Silva.pdf: 2235103 bytes, checksum: 2f7922e62d0e9e6cd2bbc309f61aa8f1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-03-14 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / In the present study ten 2,3-diyne-1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives were synthesized by Sonogashira coupling reaction between the 2,3-dibromo-1,4- naphthoquinone and several functionalized terminal alkynes using a catalytic complex of palladium (II) and CuI. Alkynes are among phenylacetylene, 1-ethyl-4- methoxybenzene, 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol, 1-ethynyl-1-cyclohexanol, 4-pentyn-2-ol, 4- pentyn-1-ol, 1-pentyne, 1-hexyne, 1-octyne and 1-decyne. The yields of products obtained ranged 15 to 55%. The enediynes having hydroxyl groups, in their structures such as 2,3-di(3-hydroxy-3-methylbut-1-yn-1-yl)-, 2,3-di[(1- hydroxycyclohexyl)ethynyl]- and 2,3-di(5-hydroxypent-1-yl)-1,4-naphthoquinone were subjected to acetylation reaction using acetic anhydride and montmorillonite clay K- 10 under sonication, thereby obtaining three new enediyne derivatives with yields ranging from 56 to 71%. The compounds were all characterized by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra, IR and MS-LC. These compounds containing the 1,4-naphthoquinone nucleus and acetylenic substituents in the quinonoid ring form a enediyne system (Z-3-ene-1,5-diyne) highly reactive, possibly subject to Bergman cycloaromatization, with potential antitumor activity. The enediynes underwent evaluation of the cytotoxic potential against three tumor cell lines, OVCAR-8 (ovarian adenocarcinoma - human), PC-3M (metastatic prostate cancer - human), NCI-H358M (bronchoalveolar lung carcinoma - human), presenting, in general, satisfactory results for inhibition of cell growth. The compound 2,3-di(3-hydroxy-3-methylbut-1-yn-yl)-1,4-naphthoquinone where said among the substances analyzed by presenting a lower IC50 (˂ 2 μg/mL) for three cell lines tested, which is characterized as a potent cytotoxic agent.

Ackzén, Kristina January 2016 (has links)

Hästbacka, Elisabeth January 1990 (has links)
This thesis deals with the problems of genre and narrative techniques in two novels by the Swedish author Hjalmar Bergman, 1883-1931. Although regarded as one of the foremost novelists in Swedish literature, with novels such as Markurells i Wadköping, 1919, and Farmor och vår Herre, 1921, Bergman's narrative techniques have not previously been systematically analyzed. Instead critics have focussed either on the biographical and philosophical aspects of his work, or on the meaning of his specific use of symbols and metaphorical language. Hjalmar Bergman wrote more than twenty novels, a large number of plays, short stories, fairy tales and screenplays. His most innovative period was in the 1910s, which is also the period focussed on here. The study begins with the reception of the seven novels written from 1912 to 1918. These novels were considerably different from what the critics at the time were wont to expect. Consequently they had trouble understanding not only the purpose of the narrative techniques in the novels, but also in determining their specific genre and subject matter. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that by analyzing Hjalmar Bergman's narrative techniques, we can learn more about the genre of the novel, about its status in the Swedish literary institution of the 1910s, and about Hjalmar Bergman's contribution to its development in Sweden. For this purpose the methods of the Russian theorist of the novel, Mikhail Bakhtin, have proved to be useful. In the succeeding chapters two novels, Loewenhistorier, 1913 (Loewen Stories) and En döds memoarer, 1918 (The Memoirs of a Dead Man), are analyzed for a deeper understanding of Hjalmar Bergman's specific use of novelistic subgenres such as the adventure story, the picaresque, the Bildungsroman, the confession, the memoir etc. Hjalmar Bergmanhas been considered a 'pre-modernist' in Swedish prose fiction. If this is the case, it is not primarily because hetried to invent new ways of writing novels, but rather that he made use of seemingly well-defined genres, combining them in new and often surprising ways. He thereby investigates not only a subject matter or a protagonist, but also the relevance, with regard to the stories hesets out to tell, of the genre-bound plots and perspectives. The result is novels that are simultaneously highly structured and 'law-abiding', in accordance with their genre patterns, and characterized by a certain open-ended 'brokenness'. Nothing ever turns out as the reader might expect, judging from the genres used in the novels. / digitalisering@umu

Speaking About Voice : A Study on Communicating Brand Personality Through Virtual Assistants

Bergman, Karolina, Sundin, Daniela January 2019 (has links)
Problematization: Earlier research on brand communication emphasize the importance of communicating a brand consistently throughout all marketing channels and media. Virtual assistants (VAs) are a new marketing media and a relatively new technology with which a brand can communicate with customers. However, the theory and knowledge about how to use it as a communication tool for a brand is limited. With human communication attributes being a unique characteristic of VAs as a marketing medium, it is suggested that these can be used to clarify and supplement the traits of a brand’s personality. Research Questions: How is brand personality communicated via integrated marketing communications? How does communication with VAs affect the consumers’ perception of a brand’s personality? Purpose: This report investigates, through theories on integrated marketing communication, brand and communication, how brand personality can be communicated through a voice. The study also shows how human conversation attributes are of importance in conversation with virtual assistants, and how these affect brand personality. Conclusion: The study has shown that virtual assistants could provide the opportunity to augment a brand’s personality as a result of their ability to adopt human communication attributes. If the conversational expectations are not fulfilled, the impression of the VA, and therefore the brand it represents, will be negatively affected. If VAs overcome the communication and social obstacles, of which some are presented in this study, they can become a valuable medium for communicating brand personality. Knowledge Contribution: This study has given an understanding for human-to-brand conversation through voice and what aspects that may be considered when developing a VA for marketing purposes. A theoretical model has been developed to show how brand personality and communication attributes can affect the brand communication through virtual assistants.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Isadora Goldberg Sinay.pdf: 586770 bytes, checksum: 5e3fbe2f23b98023e035b7c6c0fb813a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-05-09 / The presente dissertation is composed by the analysis of two fiction feature films, Wild Strawberrys and The Seventh Seal, by Ingmar Bergman. The analysis highlights, in both works, the theme of the Silence of God, importante aspect in the work of the filmmaker. Ingmar Bergman is one of the biggest names in contemporary art and his films articulate philosphy and religion, making then a piece of fundamental interest to the Science of Religions as a manifestation of essential reflections in the artistic production of a society. The analysis supports itself in the works of film analysis by Jesse Kalin and Paisley Livingston and focus in understanding the silence of God as a form of abandom and seeing the carachters search for a personal answer from the divinity as a way of conquering meaning and mercy in their lives. As the analysis goes it is verified that this answer can not be found in the transcendency, by exactly when the caracther stop looking in its direction and turns his sight to the concrete and imanent / A presente dissertação de mestrado é composta da análise de dois longa-metragens de ficção, Morangos Silvestres e O Sétimo Selo, de Ingmar Bergman .
