Entre os anos de 1941 e 1955, a Livraria Martins Editora, sediada em São Paulo, publicou a coleção Biblioteca de Literatura Brasileira. Constituída de 15 volumes, os quais, posteriormente, foram reeditados e vendidos em conjunto, num formato de edições colecionáveis, teve como projeto editorial publicar autores canônicos da literatura brasileira, ou seja, escritores consagrados pelo público e pela crítica, tais como Machado de Assis, Álvares de Azevedo, Castro Alves e outros; com textos introdutórios de estudiosos renomados como Antonio Candido, Lúcia Miguel Pereira e Sérgio Milliet. Seus exemplares eram ilustrados por grandes nomes da arte brasileira, como Anita Malfatti, Tarsila do Amaral, Di Cavalcanti, Tomás Santa Rosa, Paim, Alberto da Veiga Guignard etc., e recebiam tratamento gráfico especial, com boa impressão tipográfica e papel de qualidade. Os livros da coleção apresentam um projeto gráfico que se estrutura a partir de parâmetros clássicos de composição, sob a influência de edições francesas e inglesas. O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar o projeto gráfico dos livros a partir da relação entre os elementos do design e sua materialidade (formato, papel, tipografia, mancha gráfica, capitulares e ilustração), com o intuito de identificarmos como as edições adotam certo padrão gráfico que permite atribuir ao conjunto um caráter de coleção. Neste percurso, procuramos definir o conceito editorial e estudar o contexto histórico-social em que os livros foram produzidos. Outro aspecto relevante para a pesquisa é resgatar a memória gráfica da coleção Biblioteca de Literatura Brasileira e propor instrumentos de análise para melhor compreender os parâmetros gráficos da época e a sua percepção atual para o campo do design gráfico. / The collection Biblioteca de Literatura Brasileira edited by Livraria Martins Editora between the years 1941-1955 is characterized by publishing the canons of Brazilian literature such as Machado de Assis, Álvares de Azevedo, Castro Alves and others. In the collection published by Livraria Martins Editora the books were illustrated by great Brazilian artists such as Anita Malfatti, Tarsila do Amaral, Di Cavalcanti, Tomás Santa Rosa, Paim, Alberto da Veiga Guignard etc. The books were well printed, in fine paper and presented a graphic design that were structured by classic parameters of composition, under the influence of French and English editions. This research focus on the graphic design of the collection and analyses the relations between graphic design, editorial conception and the historical-social context in which the books were produced. In terms of visual composition, we investigate how the elements of design (format, paper, typography, grid, initials and illustrations) define a graphic pattern that allows this set of books to be assigned as a collection. Another relevant aspect of the research is the rescue of the graphic memory of the collection Biblioteca de Literatura Brasileira and the attempt in developing tools to better understand the graphic parameters of an era and its current reception for the field of graphic design.

The aim of the master thesis is to explain and sum up the currently accepted rules of preventive care of historical book collections. It concentrates on the mechanical abuse of them. It aims to make clear what the concept 'historical book collections' mean and what exactly 'the preventive care of them' is. The work also deals with the degradation factors, storage and manipulation problems, conditions of access and possibilities of preservation reformatting.

In the early 1860´s, the author and opinion former Fredrika Bremer made a large donation of books to Högre lärarinneseminariet, which is the first governmental institute for higher education of women in Sweden. The aim of this thesis is to describe the collection of donated books as well as to extract information regarding Bremer's international network of contacts, her views on women's education and her relation to Högre lärarinneseminariet. Furthermore, the aim is to highlight the unique relationship between Fredrika Bremer's private collection of the books and the library of Högre lärarinneseminariet from a gender perspective. A handwritten list of the 321 titles constitutin the donation has been preserved in the seminar archive and three quarters of the books have been re-discovered in a bookcase at Årsta castle. The donation is characterized by its double origin as stamps and personal dedications remain as permanent traces in the books. The archive list of the donation defines the scope of the current thesis. A sub-population of the books was selected for a more thorough investigation which was performed according to a bibliographical form. By considering each individual book as an artefact and the donation as its context, information was derived both from the individual book as well as from the book in relation to the collection as a whole. The investigation shows that the collection reflects Fredrika Bremer's areas of interest, her travels and her contacts with other writers throughout the world. The donation of the books, as well as the Iduna statue which she also donated, confirms that she saw her vision of a college being realized in Högre lärarinneseminariet. She was also aware of her own efforts for women's education and emancipation, and her significance as a role model for future students at the school. There is a high cultural history value in the preservation of Fredrika Bremer's book collection and it is desirable to make the collection more accessible for research.

[pt] Este trabalho analisa a produção da Coleção Primeiros Passos, publicada pela editora Brasiliense no período da abertura democrática, no Brasil, entre os anos 1979 e 1985. Com a produção dessa Coleção a Brasiliense não só conquistou uma nova posição no campo editorial como criou um espaço de participação política relevante no processo democrático em construção. Destaca-se para a análise histórica o projeto político editorial de esquerda construído pela Brasiliense nesse momento. / [en] This work analyzes the production of Primeiros Passos, the book collection, edited by Brasiliense during the period of the Brazilian democratic opening process, from 1979 to 1985. With it, Brasiliense reached a new and important position on the publishing field and furthered an extremely relevant space for political discussion and participation alongside with the democratic process under construction by civil society. The leftist political publishing project built by Brasiliense is focused on here from a historical perspective.

Mme de Marans (1719-1784) est issue d'une famille de noblesse récente et vit en châtelaine dans le Bas-Vendômois. Elle tient la plume dès son enfance et écrit en son for privé toute sa vie. Trois de ses journaux personnelsont été conservés : recueils de miscellanées, ils s'apparentent aux livres de lieux communs. La forme et le fond de cesécrits privés révèlent la personnalité de leur auteure, très cultivée, les raisons de sa prise de plume et ses pratiquesd'écriture. À l'aide de ces sources principales, de la correspondance de Mme de Marans et d'actes de la pratique, il estpossible de restituer l'éducation reçue par la diariste et les voies d'accès à la culture pour cette provinciale curieuse detout. Mme de Marans mobilise l'univers de la sociabilité des élites et celui du livre (elle offre même le fruit de sesréflexions au public via les anonymes Pensées errantes) pour satisfaire son ambition d'en apprendre davantage.Introspection, morale, théologie, histoire, littérature ancienne et moderne, sciences, intéressent Mme de Marans. Elleporte aussi sa réflexion sur des sujets d'actualité : place de la noblesse dans la société, nature du pouvoir royal etdroits des femmes. Le profil de Mme de Marans correspond à celui d'autres écrivantes et curieuses de la France et del'Europe des Lumières, mais elle subit les mêmes contraintes que ses contemporaines dans son accès à laconnaissance. Son cas montre ce qui est possible en matière de réception et d'appropriation des savoirs à lacampagne, et contribue à la réévaluation de l'éducation et la culture des femmes au château au XVIIIe siècle. / Mme de Marans (1719-1784) was born in a noble but new family and lives amongst the Bas-Vendômois gentry.She starts writing as a child and keeps private writings her whole life. Three of her diaries, or commonplace books, werepreserved. Form and content of these private writings reveal their author's character, her great culture, the reasons whyshe started writing and her writing practice. Those main sources, Mme de Marans' correspondence and notary sourceshelp reconstituting her education, and the ways her inquiring mind can access knowledge. Mme de Marans takesadvantage of her social network and of the book industry (she even publishes her thoughts in the anonymous Penséeserrantes) to fulfill her ambition of always learning more. Mme de Marans is interested in introspection, ethics, theology,history, science, ancient and modern literature. Topical issues such as nobility's place in society, nature of royal powerand women's rights concern her as well. Mme de Marans shares similarities with other women writers from France orEurope of the Enlightment, but she experiences the same restrictions as her contemporaries in her access toknowledge. Her case is an example of what can be appropriation of ideas in the countryside, and contributes to thereassessment of women's education and culture amongst the 18th century gentry.

(in English): This study focuses on the faculty libraries of the Charles University in Prague. More precisely, it deals with their collections of manuscripts, old and rare books. The introductory chapters are dedicated to theoretical basis of protection and preservation of historical documents. The main body of the thesis is created by an analysis of historical collections in particular libraries. This analysis is based on a questionnaire survey, on study of sources and on a research carried out during an actual visit to these libraries. Each chapter includes a brief history of the faculty library, the origin of the collection, and other important features such as the size of the collection, its thematic focus and especially the details of the way it is stored and available to readers. Another important focus of this study is to express the needs, the aims and experience of these faculty libraries. A more detailed study is dedicated to the library of The Protestant Theological Faculty. It includes a report about my research into the actual physical condition of the collection. The concluding and summarizing part of this thesis consists of thematically structured chapters, diagrams and tables which try to give an overall perspective on the situation.
