Historical Consciousness and the Construction of Inter-Group Relations: The Case of Francophone and Anglophone History School Teachers in Quebec

Cette thèse s’intéresse aux effets de la conscience historique sur les négociations de l’ethnicité et la structuration des frontières intergroupes chez les enseignants d’histoire nationale au Québec. L’ambiguïté de dominance ethnique entre Francophones et Anglophones contextualise la façon dont les enseignants de ces groupes historicisent les significations du passé pour se connaître et s’orienter « ethniquement. » Selon leurs constructions des réalités intergroupes, ils peuvent promouvoir la compréhension intergroupe ou préserver une coexistence rigide. Le premier article théorise comment les capacités à historiciser le passé, ou à générer des formes de vie morales pour une orientation temporelle, soutiennent la construction de l’ethnicité. En développant un répertoire des tendances de conscience historique parallèles et égales afin de comprendre les fluctuations dans le maintien des frontières ethniques, l’article souligne l’importance de la volonté à reconnaître l’agentivité morale et historique des humains à rendre les frontières plus perméables. Le deuxième article discute d’une étude sur les attitudes intergroupes et les traitements mutuels entre des enseignants d’histoire Francophones et Anglophones. Alors que la plupart des répondants francophones sont indifférents aux réalités sociales et expériences historiques des Anglo-québécois, tous les répondants anglophones en sont conscients et enseignent celles des Franco-québécois. Cette divergence implique une dissemblance dans la manière dont les relations intergroupes passées sont historicisées. La non-reconnaissance de l’agentivité morale et historique des Anglo-québécois peut expliquer l’indifférence des répondants francophones. Le dernier article présente une étude sur la conscience historique des enseignants d’histoire francophone à l’égard des Anglo-québécois. En mettant le répertoire de conscience historique développé à l’épreuve, l’étude se concentre sur la manière dont les répondants historicisent le changement temporel dans leurs négociations de l’ethnicité et leurs structurations des frontières. Tandis que leurs opinions sur l’« histoire » et leurs historicisations des contextes différents les amènent à renforcer des différences ethnoculturelles et à ne pas reconnaître l’agentivité morale et historique de l’Autre, presque la moitié des répondants démontre une ouverture à apprendre et transmettre les réalités et expériences anglo-québécoises. La dépendance sur les visions historiques préétablies pour construire les réalités intergroupes souligne néanmoins l’exclusion de ce dernier groupe dans le développement d’une identité nationale. / This three-article thesis looks at the effects of historical consciousness on the negotiation of ethnicity and the structuring of group boundaries among national history teachers in Quebec. The province’s ambiguous ethnic dominance between Francophones and Anglophones sets the stage for revealing how teachers from Quebec’s parallel history classrooms historicize meanings of the past for ethno-cultural awareness and agency. Depending on how inter-group realities are constructed, these educators can either promote inter-group comprehension or preserve rigid co-existence. The first article theorizes how social actors’ differing capacities to historicize the past, or to generate moral life patterns for temporal orientation, underlie their negotiations of ethnicity and agency toward the “significant Other.” By developing a repertory of parallel and equal tendencies of historical consciousness for grasping fluctuations in ethnic boundary maintenance, the article moreover argues how social actors’ willingness to recognize human moral and historical agency is central to group boundary porosity. The second article discusses the findings of an exploratory study conducted on inter-group attitudes and mutual in-class treatments between Francophone and Anglophone educators in Montreal national history classrooms. Whereas most Francophone respondents are indifferent to Anglo-Québécois social realities and historical experiences, all Anglophone ones know and transmit those of the Franco-Québécois to their students. Mirroring each group’s sociological status, this divergence implies a dissimilarity in how past inter-group relations are historicized. Possible non-recognition of Anglo-Québécois moral and historical agency moreover explains the prevalent indifference among Francophone respondents. The last article touches upon an in-depth study conducted on Francophone national history teachers’ historical consciousness of the Anglo-Québécois. By testing my aforementioned repertory, the study analyzed how respondents historicize temporal change when negotiating ethnicity and structuring group boundaries. While their views on “history” and their historicizing of different thematic contexts overwhelmingly lead respondents to reinforce ethno-cultural differences and to not recognize human moral and historical agency, half of them nonetheless demonstrate openness to learning about and transmitting Anglo-Québécois social realities and historical experiences. Despite such willingness, reliance on pre-established historical visions for constructing inter-group realities nevertheless highlights the exclusion of the latter when respondents set out to develop a national identity among students.

Teorie firmy v pojetí nové institucionální ekonomii s přihlédnutím ke stavu institucionálního prostředí v ČR / Theory of the Firm from the view of New Institutional Economics and some Aspects of Institutional Framework Quality in the Czech Republic

This doctoral thesis presents the basic and the main developments of the theories of the firm rooted in Transaction Cost Theory (TCT). Since the article of Coase on the nature of the firm, this question has been elaborated by number of economists. In my point of view, I would like to introduce the last theory developed by the representative of the school called New Institutional Economics. The theory concentrates on the role of institutions. We distinguish institutions formal and informal. The formal are laws, constitution, regulations, contracts and other written rules. The informal don't require a written form and they represent informal restrictions such as rules of behaviour, conventions, traditions and habits. The main purpose of the institutions in their various forms is mainly to protect property rights, enforce voluntary contracts and establish the physical and regulatory infrastructure to facilitate economic activity. Generally, we can call them the rules of the game. They inform us about possible economic behaviour and give us basic restrictions in this sense. First -- the theoretical part of this thesis, we can find a simple model with human asset specificity based on TCT. The main proposition is that transactions with a high level of asset specificity are more probably internalised because the firm handles better such transactions compared to the market, even if asset specificity increases the cost of coordination in the firm. If the hierarchy, for example through the formation of routines, may enhance the efficiency compared to the market, we can modify the previous model. The model developed according to a Knowledge-based view assumes that asset specificity reduces transaction costs inside the firm and increases transaction costs on the market. In the conclusion of the theoretical part is discussed the reply on first formulate hypothesis if the TCT is still compatible with a newer Capability and Knowledge based view. In my opinion based on the presented arguments and views, both theories are compatible, they can answer more questions and explain more issues. The last step links the aforementioned theories into one Theory of firm boundaries. In the practical part of the thesis, I bring basic arguments about the institutional framework quality in the Czech Republic. These arguments rely on the latest studies of the international institutions such The Transparency International, The Heritage Foundation, The Kurtzman Group and mainly The World Bank. Studies reveal certain weak arrangements concerning for example the number of procedures when starting a business, complicated construction permits, rigidity of working hours, time-consuming and administrative demanding tax system, duration of judicial process which results in ineffective contract enforcement and mainly poor protection of property rights. Taking these disclosures into account we have to say that emergent transaction costs are enormous. These transaction costs influence negatively the competitiveness of the firms and the whole Czech economy. Therefore a negative response to the second hypothesis relating to the quality of the institutional framework in the Czech Republic.

After an initial analysis of the problems of growth of cities and the exploitation of natural resources, there is a major historical events and documents produced in the environmental area and presentation of a number of changes in the field of architecture and urbanism. There is then an analysis on techniques to improve the environment urban or peri-urban and feel the need to incorporate principles of ecology in planning and city management. The first technical deal with water resources and urban drainage, pointing the principles proposed for sustainable management of rainwater. In addition to these proposals, there is a land of bioengineering and fitorremedia??o, which are techniques for stabilization and recovery of degraded areas, especially in water courses. Shall be analysed then the permaculture, a philosophy that is creating scenarios in human space already offering a number of practices they consider the energy cycle of human actions, aimed at reduction of waste and ecological awareness in food production and actions of everyday life. The permaculture serves as the basis for ecological communities, called "ecovilas", which house thousands of people seeking to live with another form of relationship with nature around the world. Consistency in the international law of maritime delimitation : towards a set of common principles for the judicial establishment of maritime boundaries

This thesis examines the process applied by international tribunals for delimiting Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf boundaries under international law. Maritime delimitation is governed by articles 74 and 83 of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which are customary international law. However, owing to the vagueness of such legal provisions, international tribunals have been developing a standard process for delimiting maritime boundaries. The delimitation process has evolved significantly since the 1969 judgment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in North Sea Continental Shelf. The ICJ re-stated this process in its 2009 Black Sea judgment as being constituted of three stages: first, an equidistance line is provisionally drawn; second, this line is adjusted should relevant circumstances so require; third, the overall equitableness of the boundary is evaluated by assessing the proportionality between the length of the relevant coast and the marine areas appertaining to each state. This thesis analyses each stage of the delimitation process as re-stated in Black Sea. By way of introduction, chapter 1 outlines the relevant legal provisions and the historical evolution of the delimitation process through the jurisprudence of international tribunals. Chapter 2 discusses both the notions of the relevant coast and of the relevant area, and the practical methods for their identification. Since Black Sea, international tribunals have tended to identify the relevant coast and the relevant area prior to establishing a provisional equidistance line. Chapter 3 discusses the issues concerning the drawing of the provisional equidistance line. Chapter 4 examines relevant circumstances and the methods for adjusting an equidistance line. Chapter 5 discusses proportionality. Using doctrinal legal research methodologies, this thesis aims to assess the degree of consistency in the international tribunals’ application of the three-stage delimitation process. It argues that, while great leaps forward have been made since 1969, there is still a number of unresolved issues, in relation to which this thesis endeavours to provide some workable solutions.

Récupération d'énergie par cycle de Rankine à bord d'un véhicule : commande et gestion énergétique / Rankine cycle for waste heat recovery on board vehicles : control and energy management

Au moins 30% de l'énergie produite par les moteurs à combustion interne est dissipée sous forme de chaleur dans les gaz d'échappement. L'intérêt des constructeurs pour les systèmes de récupération de chaleur bases sur le cycle thermodynamique de Rankine est justifié par des réductions de consommation espérées entre 5 et 10%. L'ambition de cette thèse est de contribuer à lever les principaux verrous liés à la gestion des procédés Rankine pour des applications ≪ mobiles ≫. Ce manuscrit s'appuie sur trois cas d'étude avec, pour chacun, un procédé pilote destiné à être intégré respectivement sur des véhicules légers à moteur essence, sur des camions poids-lourds et sur des trains à propulsion hybride Diesel électrique. Pour cela, des approches de l'automatique à base de modèle ont été développées. Une nouvelle loi de commande non-linéaire, permettant l'asservissement de la température et de la pression en sortie d'évaporateur, est proposée. Il est montré expérimentalement que le système peut être maintenu dans des conditions permettant la récupération d'énergie sans discontinuer, même sur des cycles routiers très dynamiques. La supervision énergétique du cycle de Rankine à bord d'un véhicule est ensuite abordée. Il s'agit de trouver les consignes pour la commande rapprochée qui permettent de maximiser l'efficacité énergétique d'un véhicule équipé d'un système de récupération d'énergie par cycle de Rankine. Il est montré que le gain énergétique apporté par l'optimisation dynamique temps réel proposée est important, comparé à une stratégie basée sur l'optimisation statique du système habituellement employée dans la littérature / More than 30% of the energy produced by internal combustion engines (ICE) is dissipated as heat through the exhaust gases. The interest of manufacturers in heat recovery systems based on the thermodynamic Rankine cycle is justified by announced reductions in fuel consumption ranging from 5 and 10% depending on the system and the driving cycle. The aim of this thesis is to help remove the main barriers associated with supervising and controlling Rankine processes for ≪ mobile ≫ applications. This dissertation is based on three study cases, each corresponding to a pilot process installed in engine test benches at IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN). These are applications to be integrated respectively on board light-duty vehicles with spark-ignition engine, heavy-duty trucks and trains with Diesel-electric propulsion. An original nonlinear (model-based) control law for the temperature and the pressure tracking at the evaporator outlet is proposed. It is shown experimentally that the system can be maintained under conditions allowing continuous energy recovery, even during highly transient road cycles. Then the supervision of Rankine systems is addressed, resulting in the choice of optimal set-points (in term of energy management) for the low-level controller. An optimal control problem is formulated, allowing online implementation via dynamic real-time optimization.The proposed approach is validated on a realistic simulator, showing significant benefits in the amount of energy recovered when compared with the classical (static) approach found in Rankine cycle literature

Linear and non-linear properties of light

Alle optischen Systeme haben den gleichen Zweck: Sie manipulieren Eigenschaften des Lichts, durch Interaktion mit Materie. In dieser Arbeit werden zwei wichtige Teilaspekte aus diesem Kontext untersucht, im linearen und im nicht-linearen Bereich. In Teil I werden die bekannten Bragg-Reflexionen in neuem Licht betrachtet. Bragg Reflexion findet statt, wenn Licht mit einem periodischen Medium interagiert. Die Bragg-Bedingung verknüpft den Gitterabstand in einem Kristall mit der Wellenlänge, die von ihm reflektiert wird. In dieser Arbeit werden die Bragg Reflexionen in gewellten Wellenleitern untersucht. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Bragg-Bedingung nicht ausreicht, um die Streuung in diesen Wellenleitern zu verstehen. Es wird numerisch und analytisch demonstriert, dass unebene Ränder eine neue Reflexionsbedingung schaffen, die über das einfache Bragg-Bild hinausgeht. Dieser Streueffekt, der Square Gradient Bragg-Mechanismus ist aus statistischen Streuansätzen bekannt. Er hängt mit der Krüummung des Randes zusammen und hat einen starken Einfluss auf die Wellenleitung in diesen Systemen. In dieser Arbeit wird die erste allgemeine Theorie für den Square Gradient Bragg Streumechanismus vorgestellt, die es ermöglicht, Voraussagen für einzelne Wellenleiter mit beliebig deformierten Rändern zu treffen. Eine weitere wichtige Eigenschaft des Lichts wird in Teil II dieser Arbeit untersucht: Die Verschränkung zwischen zwei Photonen. Verschränkung ist ein intuitiv nicht verständliches Phänomen, weil es in der uns umgebenden klassischen Welt kein Analogon hat. Insbesondere verletzt es unsere implizite Annahme eines lokalen Realismus, weil voneinander entfernte Teilchen scheinbar instantan miteinander wechselwirken können. In dieser Arbeit wird eine neue und verstimmbare Quelle für verschränkte Photonen entworfen. Die Photonenpaare werden in nicht-linearen Kristallen erzeugt, aber ihre Verschränkung wird rein geometrisch erzwungen. Dieser geometrische Ansatz erlaubt es, die Frequenz der Photonen einzustellen. Hier übertrifft diese neue Quelle ihre Vorgänger, die ausführlich besprochen werden. Die Verschränkung der erzeugten Photonen wird experimentell nachgewiesen. / Any optical experiment, any optical technology is only about one thing: Manipulating the properties of light through interaction with matter. This thesis will address two important issues in this broad context, in the linear and in the non-linear regime. In Part I, the well-known Bragg reflection is revised. Bragg reflection takes place whenever light interacts with a periodic structure. The famous Bragg condition relates the lattice spacing in a crystal to the wavelength which is effectively reflected by that lattice. In this thesis the Bragg reflection in dielectric waveguides is investigated. It is shown that the Bragg condition is not sufficient to describe the scattering situation in waveguides with corrugated boundaries. It is demonstrated, analytically and numerically, that corrugated boundaries cause a new type of reflection condition, which goes beyond the Bragg picture. This scattering mechanism, the Square Gradient Bragg Scattering, is known from statistical scattering approaches. It is connected to the curvature of the boundary and has a strong influence on the wave propagation in these systems. Here the first general theory for Square Gradient Bragg Scattering is presented, which allows for making predictions for single corrugated waveguides with arbitrary boundaries. Another important property of light is investigated in Part II of this thesis: The entanglement of two photons. Entanglement is a counter-intuitive phenomenon, because it has no classical analogy. It especially violates our assumption of local realism, because distant particles seemingly act on each other instantaneously. In this thesis a new tunable and portable source of photon pairs is designed. The photon pairs are created in non-linear crystals, but their entanglement is enforced in a purely geometrical manner. This geometrical approach makes the setup tunable. This is where the new design supersedes its predecessor, which will be discussed in detail. The entanglement of the generated photons is demonstrated experimentally.

Dynamics and mechanics of compartment boundaries in developing tissues

During development of tissues, cells collectively organize to form complex patterns and morphologies. A general feature of many developing epithelia is their distinct organization into cellular compartments of different cell lineages. The interfaces between these compartments, called compartment boundaries, maintain straight and sharp morphologies. The interfaces play key roles in tissue development and pattern formation. An important model system to study the morphology of compartment boundaries during development is the wing disc of the fruit fly. Two compartment boundaries exist in the fly wing disc, the anteroposterior (AP) boundary and the dorsoventral (DV) boundary. A crucial question is how compartment boundaries are shaped and remain stable during growth. In this work, we discuss the dynamics and mechanisms of compartment boundaries in developing epithelia. We analyze the general features of interfacial phenomena in coarse- grained models of passive and active fluids. We introduce a continuum description of tissues with two cell types. This model allows us to study the propagation of interfaces due to the interplay of cell dynamics and tissue mechanics. We also use a vertex model to describe cellular compartments in growing epithelia. The vertex model accounts for cell mechanics and describes a 2D picture of tissues where the network of adherens junctions characterizes cell shapes. We use this model to study the general physical mechanisms by which compartment boundaries are shaped. We quantify the stresses in the cellular network and discuss how cell mechanics and growth influence the stress profile. With the help of the anisotropic stress profile near the interfaces we calculate the interfacial tension. We show that cell area pressure, cell proliferation rate, orientation of cell division, cell elongation created by external stress, and cell bond tension all have distinct effects on the morphology of interfaces during tissue growth. Furthermore, we investigate how much different mechanisms contribute to the effective interfacial tension. We study the mechanisms shaping the DV boundary in wing imaginal disc at different stages during the development. We analyze the images of wing discs to quantify the roughness of the DV boundary and average cell elongation in its vicinity. We quantify increased cell bond tension along the boundary and analyze the role of localized reduction in cell proliferation on the morphology of the DV boundary. We use experimentally determined values for cell bond tension, cell elongation and bias in orientation of cell division in simulations of tissue growth in order to reproduce the main features of the time-evolution of the DV boundary shape.

Water Resources of the Inner Basin of San Francisco Volcano, Coconino County, Arizona

From the Proceedings of the 1974 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 19-20, 1974, Flagstaff, Arizona / The inner basin is a collapse and erosional feature in San Francisco Mountain, an extinct volcano of late Cenozoic age, which lies approximately eight miles north of flagstaff, Arizona. The main aquifer's coefficient of transmissibility is approximately 14,000 gallons per day per foot and the storage coefficient was 0.08. Aquifer boundaries increased rates of drawdown of water levels in the inner basin well field. Inner basin springs which issue from perched reservoirs are not affected by pumpage of inner basin wells. Recharge is greater than the average yield from springs and wells in the basin which has an average of 8,000 acre-feet of water in storage in the principal aquifer. A large amount of water is lost from the inner basin aquifer system via leakage into underlying fractured volcanic rocks. It is believed that a part of this water could be intercepted by pumpage from a well constructed in the interior valley.

La dépendance sur les visions historiques préétablies pour construire les réalités intergroupes souligne néanmoins l’exclusion de ce dernier groupe dans le développement d’une identité nationale. / This three-article thesis looks at the effects of historical consciousness on the negotiation of ethnicity and the structuring of group boundaries among national history teachers in Quebec. The province’s ambiguous ethnic dominance between Francophones and Anglophones sets the stage for revealing how teachers from Quebec’s parallel history classrooms historicize meanings of the past for ethno-cultural awareness and agency. Depending on how inter-group realities are constructed, these educators can either promote inter-group comprehension or preserve rigid co-existence. The first article theorizes how social actors’ differing capacities to historicize the past, or to generate moral life patterns for temporal orientation, underlie their negotiations of ethnicity and agency toward the “significant Other.” By developing a repertory of parallel and equal tendencies of historical consciousness for grasping fluctuations in ethnic boundary maintenance, the article moreover argues how social actors’ willingness to recognize human moral and historical agency is central to group boundary porosity. The second article discusses the findings of an exploratory study conducted on inter-group attitudes and mutual in-class treatments between Francophone and Anglophone educators in Montreal national history classrooms. Whereas most Francophone respondents are indifferent to Anglo-Québécois social realities and historical experiences, all Anglophone ones know and transmit those of the Franco-Québécois to their students. Mirroring each group’s sociological status, this divergence implies a dissimilarity in how past inter-group relations are historicized. Possible non-recognition of Anglo-Québécois moral and historical agency moreover explains the prevalent indifference among Francophone respondents. The last article touches upon an in-depth study conducted on Francophone national history teachers’ historical consciousness of the Anglo-Québécois. By testing my aforementioned repertory, the study analyzed how respondents historicize temporal change when negotiating ethnicity and structuring group boundaries. While their views on “history” and their historicizing of different thematic contexts overwhelmingly lead respondents to reinforce ethno-cultural differences and to not recognize human moral and historical agency, half of them nonetheless demonstrate openness to learning about and transmitting Anglo-Québécois social realities and historical experiences. Despite such willingness, reliance on pre-established historical visions for constructing inter-group realities nevertheless highlights the exclusion of the latter when respondents set out to develop a national identity among students.
