Modeling and Execution of Resilient Business Processes in Unreliable Communication EnvironmentsNordemann, Frank 01 March 2022 (has links)
Business processes define workflows by structuring sets of activities according to given objectives. Process Modeling Languages (PMLs) provide graphical elements to define process models. Apart from use cases in finance and commerce, PMLs gain popularity in application domains such as Cyber-Physical Systems, the Internet of Things, ubiquitous computing, mobile devices, and scenarios happening in rural, restricted, or disaster-affected regions. Many of the domains are exposed to delayed, intermittent, or broken connectivity. Existing PMLs show limitations in considering connectivity-related issues, leading to failures and breakdowns at process runtime. This thesis addresses connectivity-related issues regarding the modeling and execution of resilient business processes taking place in unreliable communication environments. With resilient BPMN (rBPMN), an extension for the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) addressing environments with delayed, intermittent, or broken connectivity is introduced. rBPMN extends the BPMN metamodel by new elements for resilient process models. Domain experts may define alternatives for possibly failing message flows based on priorities or characteristics of the alternatives. Functionality offered by remote participants may be moved to other participants for local execution. This thesis illustrates approaches for the graph-based analysis of business processes regarding their resilient operation. By translating process models into directed graphs, graph algorithms allow to dynamically find the most suitable process path. Domain experts are enabled to identify non-resilient parts of a process model, allowing them to optimize the involved segments before runtime. Multi-criteria analysis approaches optimize process operation according to a chosen set of criteria. A real-world scenario of an environmental-friendly slurry application illustrates the use of rBPMN’s concepts and approaches for modeling and executing resilient processes. Technical approaches realizing rBPMN’s resilience strategies using a BPMN runtime engine and microservices are illustrated. The proof-of-concept implementations may be extended and adapted, serving as guides for other application domains.

Matching Corporate Social Responsibility Strategies to Organizational GoalsVitelli, Jason P 01 January 2017 (has links)
Many Fortune 500 organizations have policies about corporate social responsibility (CSR), but the leaders struggle to implement CSR policies that match corporate stated goals and objectives. The purpose of this case study was to explore whether leaders' CSR strategies matched the goals and objectives of the company. Twenty individuals located in New York, NY, United States, with various management-level positions, and who had experiences with CSR in a Fortune 500 organization with a CSR policy, participated in the current study. The conceptual framework was corporate social responsibility stakeholder theory. Data collection consisted of a semistructured interview with the leaders about CSR, and the company's official documents on CSR. Data were analyzed using constant comparative text analysis to identify themes. Three main themes emerged: a) despite being in leadership positions, some of the participants have a basic knowledge and grasp of CSR but not the full-fledged initiative to go beyond existing CSR practices; (b) CSR programs are scripted and heavily predictable; and (c) leaders implement CSR policies based on individual interpretations of CSR. Business leaders may use the results of the study, along with the documented practices, policies, and experiences of a Fortune 500 company, to enhance programs to ensure CSR adoption and success. The implications for positive social change are significant to Fortune 500 organizations and businesses, because current and future leaders as well as other organizational leaders may use the data to improve their personal CSR interpretations with an organization's CSR-related business processes and policies.

IMPERATIVE MODELS TO DECLARATIVE CONSTRAINTS : Generating Control-Flow Constraints from Business Process ModelsBergman Thörn, Arvid January 2023 (has links)
In complex information systems, it is often crucial to evaluate whether a sequence of activities obtained from a system log complies with behavioural rules. This process of evaluation is called conformance checking, and the most classical approach to specifying the behavioural rules is in the form of flow chartlike process diagrams, e.g., in the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) language. Traditionally, control flow constraints are extracted using Petri net replay-based approaches. Though, with the use of industrial process query languages such as Signavio Analytics Language (SIGNAL) that allows for temporal row matching, the possibility of performing conformance checking using temporal constraints opens up. To this end, this thesis presents a parser for extracting control-flow objects from BPMN-based business process models and a compiler for generating both linear temporal logic-like rules as well as SIGNAL queries. The parser succeeds at parsing all industry models and most academic models; the exceptions in the latter case can presumably be traced back to edge cases and unidiomatic modelling. The constraints generated by the compiler are in some, but not in all cases, identical to constraints extracted via Petri net replay as an intermediate step, indicating some differences in the formal interpretation of BPMN control flow. In conclusion, the implementation and evaluation of the parser and compiler indicate that it is feasible to move directly from business user-oriented process models to declarative, query language-based constraints, cutting out the Petri net-replay middleman and hence facilitating elegant and more efficient process data querying.

Information visualization as an interactive business intelligence tool for improved management and self-assessment of financial brokers in private bankingTasola Kullander, Petter January 2019 (has links)
With an increase in storage capacity, many organizations strive to collect as much data as possible. The data can then be aggregated and visualized in order to provide a strategic advantage, commonly referred to as Business Intelligence (BI). Several sectors are contemporarily unfamiliar with the full potential of BI visualizations, among them the financial sector. In this report, an experimental design-oriented research study, set out to explore the affordances and challenges with designing an information visualization to improve both management and self-assessment of financial brokers in private banking at a large-scale bank.To explore this area, a prototype was iteratively developed based on information gathered from interviews and evaluations on two private banking managers and a panel of UX professionals at the bank. The final prototype was then evaluated by the two managers and five of their financial brokers through a combination of a task analysis and semi-structured interviews. The results concluded that the proposed visualization improved several aspects for financial management including business overview and workload balancing. However, the proposed tool was not deemed useful in self-assessment terms as financial brokers’ performance is so largely dependent on the current market state.

A New Paradigm Integrating Business Process Modeling and Use Case ModelingBrown, Barclay 01 January 2015 (has links)
The goal of this research is to develop a new paradigm integrating the practices of business process modeling and use case modeling. These two modeling approaches describe the behavior of organizations and systems, and their interactions, but rest on different paradigms and serve different needs. The base of knowledge and information required for each approach is largely common, however, so an integrated approach has advantages in efficiency, consistency and completeness of the overall behavioral model. Both modeling methods are familiar and widely used. Business process modeling is often employed as a precursor to the development of a system to be used in a business organization. Business process modeling teams and stakeholders may spend months or years developing detailed business process models, expecting that these models will provide a useful base of information for system designers. Unfortunately, as the business process model is analyzed by the system designers, it is found that information needed to specify the functionality of the system does not exist in the business process model. System designers may then employ use case modeling to specify the needed system functionality, again spending significant time with stakeholders to gather the needed input. Stakeholders find this two-pass process redundant and wasteful of time and money since the input they provide to both modeling teams is largely identical, with each team capturing only the aspects relevant to their form of modeling. Developing a new paradigm and modeling approach that achieves the objectives of both business process modeling and use case modeling in an integrated form, in one analysis pass, results in time savings, increased accuracy and improved communication among all participants in the systems development process. Analysis of several case studies will show that inefficiency, wasted time and overuse of stakeholder resource time results from the separate application of business process modeling and use case modeling. A review of existing literature on the subject shows that while the problem of modeling both business process and use case information in a coordinated fashion has been recognized before, there are few if any approaches that have been proposed to reconcile and integrate the two methods. Based on both literature review and good modeling practices, a list of goals for the new paradigm and modeling approach forms the basis for the paradigm to be created. A grounded theory study is then conducted to analyze existing modeling approaches for both business processes and use cases and to provide an underlying theory on which to base the new paradigm. The two main innovations developed for the new paradigm are the usage process and the timebox. Usage processes allow system usages (use cases) to be identified as the business process model is developed, and the two to be shown in a combined process flow. Timeboxes allow processes to be positioned in time-relation to each other without the need to combine processes into higher level processes using causal relations that may not exist. The combination of usage processes and timeboxes allows any level of complex behavior to be modeled in one pass, without the redundancy and waste of separate business process and use case modeling work. Several pilot projects are conducted to test the new modeling paradigm in differing modeling situations with participants and subject matter experts asked to compare the traditional models with the new paradigm formulations.
