Integrating IT and change management : A benefits analysisTunedal, Lenny January 2009 (has links)
IT as an enabler, by obtaining benefits to an organization, was the coherent apprehension behind the purchase of the Enterprise Resource System R/3 by Ericsson in 1997. Public Networks, a 33.000 worker’s division at Ericsson, have had profitability problems during the recent years prior to the purchase. By integrating R/3 with an organizational change, the management aimed to obtain foreseen benefits, such as headcount reduction and shorter lead times. This thesis shows in theory as in practice difficulties and obstacles in reaching and calculating benefits of IT. Through analyzing the system along with the business processes targeted by the integration project, a list of Key Performance Indicators was brought to the stakeholders of the organization. Through numerous interviews and meetings throughout the division the indicators were discussed, depicted and analyzed. In a consensus driven organization as Public Networks, the integration project withholding the largest Enterprise Resource Planning systems had to work politically with communication to be able to gain approval for its benefits. In failing to win the process against different views and stakeholders, benefits was to be at risk and more importantly, later shown to be impossible to measure.

To meet the demands of a rapidly increasing population in Sweden, municipal services need to distribute their resources efficiently and offer well functioning services. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the factors that lead to success in leadership and participation in municipal business. The study is based on the cornerstone model (Bergman & Klefsjö, 2012) which is part of an interpretation of Total Quality Management. A case study was conducted on the winning units of the City of Stockholms Quality Awards 2016, through analysis of written entries and interviews. This study concluded that the leadership was executed by setting goals that correspond with the goals of the city. The style of leadership showed that the client always remained the focal point of all business development. The leadership was result-oriented. Managers expressed a desire for all employees to participate and be engaged in their work. This effect was achieved preferably by giving and taking responsibilities. Another significant element needed for the development of successful leadership is the notion that managers do not stand alone. When difficult or sensitive problems arose, managers asked for, and received, help. / <p>2017-06-28</p>

In 2014, the municipality of Söderhamn initiated a new control and management philosophy, characterized by core values such as increased citizen focus, employee commitment and trust in all operative aspects. These values are the same as the core values of Total Quality Management and leadership for change. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain more knowledge about the work involved in implementing the management philosophy as well as the experiences of senior management. Eight managers were interviewed. These semi-structured interviews were then transcribed and collected, after which the empiricism has been interpreted from a hermeneutic perspective based on the theoretical framework of the study. The results indicate that the change process is complex and the leaders have interpreted the guiding values differently, leading to the conclusion that there are differences in the degree of matureness between individuals as well as within the organisation. Moreover, the financial steering in the municipality is not yet accustomed to the new philosophy/ management. The authors conclude that the concepts characterizing the values of the municipality easily become abstract and are hard to implement in practise and, furthermore, there is capacity for improvement in the implementation work. / <p>2017-06-28</p>

Challenges when making extensive changes to software processes : A case study on a software development department at Scania CV ABDibo, Alexandra January 2017 (has links)
Organizations go through a variety of different change processes during their life time, and many of these are necessary for the organizations to maintain their competitiveness. However, a large part of change efforts never achieve their goals and about 70 percent of all change efforts are considered to be unsuccessful. A reason for the high percentage of failures is the inability to deal with the challenges that often arises in connection with the change process. In order for the change effort to be successful it is therefore crucial to be prepared and knowing how to identify and handle the challenges and resistance that may arise during the change process. The aim of the study has been to identify the challenges with extensive change efforts in software development organizations. Two extensive changes, (1) changing the software itself by making the software structure modular and (2) changing the software development process by adapting agile methods, at a software development department at Scania CV AB has been used as a case study. An overall fear and resistance towards extensive changes was identified. In addition, four main challenges were identified with the first change; difficulties with the software development process, lack of vision and communication from management, fear and uncertainty, and lack of resources and tools. Two challenges were identified with the second change; that it was time consuming and lack of resources and tools. The difficulties with the software development process showed that the major challenge with the modular software structure was maintaining it. However, the remaining challenges have previously been identified in several studies and could all be related to being causes of resistance. Also, a comparison between the two changes were made to identify similarities and differences between them. This was made to further understand if the difference between the changes could be related to the challenges. The comparison indicates that a change effort with a clear vision, good communication and management involvement is less likely to encounter challenges.

Information, communication and technological competencies in a digital working environment : a case study in the Netherlands Defence OrganizationBroos, Elizabeth 18 June 2008 (has links)
This research is an attempt to obtain insight in the influence of ICT and the information society on the labour environment of the officers of the Netherlands Defence Organization and to determine the competence of those officers in a number of information, communication and technological areas associated with the changed ways of working in the information society as they are discussed in the literature. What was found is that a substantial number of officers are not fully prepared to participate in the new ways of working required in the information society. The implications of those findings for a digital learning environment for the Netherlands Defence Academy are discussed and a general model for information, communication and technological competencies for managers in the information society is proposed based on the results of the case study. / Thesis (PhD (Computer-Integrated Education))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

The Barriers to, and Incidence of, Islamic Banking and Finance in CanadaTahmina, Tanita Noor January 2013 (has links)
The non-interest and profit-loss sharing schemes of Islamic finance (IF) are attracting increasing global attention. Despite exposure to the similar opportunities as other Western countries that have adopted the financial business model there is little evidence of Islamic finance windows operating in the conventional institutions in Canada. This thesis takes a qualitative approach to bring the issue forward in Canadian social science literature by exploring the perceived challenges to, and the potential of, the development of IF offerings with a focus on factors affecting the supply and management decisions in the industry. The study used an inductive approach with archival data and critical survey of literature to arrive at the hypotheses surrounding the challenges. These were tested deductively by semi-structured interviews and panel discussions both in Canada and the US on a sample of senior officials involved in both IF and conventional financial institutions. Using a thematic analysis the study arrived at findings supporting the hypotheses related to awareness, regulation, management intent and internal resources. In the external environment, factors affecting strategic decision on offering IF services are mainly due to regulation, lack of awareness, even among Muslim communities, or misgivings about Sha’riah authenticity. Internally, highly customized IT infrastructures, lack of funds and foreign investment make it unfeasible. Management interest when proposed with the concept is high but not in a top-down manner and there is an overall uncertainty avoidance culture and little proactivity with market research. Access to specific Sha’riah knowledge is not considered a hurdle anymore. It is apparent that investments in Sha’riah compliant stocks would be easiest to set up. Mortgage structures can be affected by the capital market structure, even if not tax structures. Knowledge on this can have implications for banks seeking to expand their investment portfolios and aid government policies.
