Boon, Wietske 30 November 2008 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The problem that motivated the study was that siblings of children with cancer may experience the relationships within the family differently after cancer treatment. The purpose was to investigate and describe how family dynamics are experienced by the siblings of a cancer patient after his/her treatment for cancer. The research methodology includes qualitative research of an explorative and descriptive nature. Data were collected through unstructured interviews with siblings of children who had received treatment for cancer. From this data eight categories were identified accordingly. Although the data do not indicate that siblings experienced family dynamics after treatment as problematic, as expected, the information contributes by making parents of cancer patients more aware of the siblings' emotions and needs. / Social Work / M.Diac (Spelterapie)

Priscilla Machado Moraes 15 February 2011 (has links)
This dissertation aims to understand the functioning of families with children affected by obesity in the installation and maintenance of the disease from the perspective of parents. In this circumstance, we considered the feelings expressed by mothers and difficulties facing the obesity of children, strategies used to address the problem in the family context and indicators that could be contributing to the maintenance of the obese children. The work is divided in three articles, one theoretical and two empirical. The first presents a brief history of the human need to feed that showed the changes that led to the proliferation of obesity and, in this scenario, the changes that the family faces in adapting to the environment permeated with so many offers and constant changes, in conjunction with Systemic Theory. The second article identifies the family context under the light of the Systemic Theory, indicators of family dynamics that may be contributing to the installation and maintenance of obesity in childhood. The third article considers elements in the family history of children with obesity, the sentiments expressed by the families and the physical and psychological consequences of disease progression. The research is qualitative in nature, taking into account the experience of participating in the issue. Six mothers were interviewed and a grandmother of children, aged between 8-10 years old, who were in the outpatient clinic of Childhood Obesity Institute of Medicine Professor Fernando Figueira (IMIP) in the city of Recife. We used an interview with previously established questions, and subsequently the results were discussed based on thematic content analysis. The results indicated that all members of the system are involved in the installation of obesity, through the maternal rejection, overprotection offset by food, marital conflicts, and interference from the grandparents in the feeding of grandchildren, which shows confusion in the hierarchy. The difficulties of exchange with the environment showed that families consume of food with high contents of fat, lack of cohesion about food standards and limits are the child elements that may be contributing to the maintenance of childhood obesity

The problem of this study is localized around the issues of sexual abuse perpetrated by father against children. Based on issues and concerns caused by the clinic listening to children and adolescents involved in situations of sexual violence and their families aimed to study, within the psychoanalytic perspective, the impact on family dynamics, the development of intra-family sexual abuse and the implications for the child. Participated in the survey the mother of a child who suffered sexual abuse by her biological father and revealed the fact to mother after almost two years, referred to research by the Interprofessional Reference Center on Attention to Children and Adolescents Victims of Violence of Capital / Court of Justice of Pernambuco [TJPE]. We adopted for the collection of data the semi-directed psychological interviews, within the clinical-qualitative approach, observing the ethical guidelines for research with human beings; for the analysis of the data we use the Content Analysis[AC], grouping the interview fragments themes to then understand them in their core sense. Our research has shown that disclosure of child sexual abuse is a slow and gradual process that requires an intense psychic work for the child and unfolds in his narrative. We found that the revelation of incestuous sexual abuse does not necessarily promote early relief and can be lived in a threatening and painful for the child / adolescent, associated with anxieties and fantasies, being able to be more difficult than the experience of abuse. Both the child and family members when deciding the complaint, are asked to talk about what happened in different instances, mostly disjointed, forcing members to share, countless times, how was the abuse by setting up a true via-crucis for children mainly. We also note that the data analyzed in the interview show that in relation to the family, the process of revelation leads to a destabilizing period requiring the emotional disposition group for the development and transformation. It can tell that our study corroborates findings from previous research, with regard to maternal reactions to the disclosure, evidencing the psychological suffering that mothers have to take notice of the fact, and must receive equal attention and care in the course of revelation, noting that occupy a significant place in this process. As regards the disclosure in the clinical context, we emphasize the importance of clinical work and Therapist figure mediating the child relationship with his experience of abuse, offering a safe environment for creating senses. Thus, we hope that this research has contributed in some way to broaden the discussion around the issue of child sexual abuse assistance in the field of clinical and academic circles.

Body image in preadolescent girls

Maimon, Kyla 01 1900 (has links)
People's psychological experience of their body can impact on their lives. Some theories hold that the media creates an impossible physical ideal. The demands of trying to achieve this ideal may lead to normative discontent and psychopathology. Girls are experiencing this pressure at a younger age and the onset of puberty can exacerbate this experience. The present study used case studies and thematic content analysis to explore the issue of body image in twelve preadolescent girls. The research found that hair and the ability of the body to do need to be encompassed in the definition of body image. While the participants appeared to have a positive perception of their body, there also appeared to be negative feelings. This suggested that the participants experienced confusion and ambiguous feelings about their body. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

A survey on the occurrence and effects of corporal punishment on children in the home

Smith, Elizabeth, 1983- 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of the current study was to determine the occurrence and effects of corporal punishment in the South African environment. Special attention was paid to themes that were derived from the literature. These themes were immediate compliance, aggression and the parental influence of corporal punishment. This was a quantitative study which utilised a survey developed by the researcher using previous literature on the topic of corporal punishment. The sample was taken from four different schools in the Johannesburg area. The sample consisted of one hundred and twenty one children within middle childhood (N=121). It was found that corporal punishment is occurring in South African homes. It was also found that children do not feel indifferent about the use of corporal punishment. When it came to the use of corporal punishment and socio-economic status, it was found that there is a significant correlation between the two. / Social Work / M.Diac (Play therapy)

Van Niekerk, Anna Maria Susanna 06 October 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature and negative consequenses of, and to set guidelines for the therapeutic handling of the loss and grief process. A literature study was undertaken to determine the nature, consequences, and therapeutic techniques, with regard to the loss and grief process, based on Psychological Relations theory. By means of therapeutic intervention in the three participants’ loss and grief processes, I gained insight to compose a therapeutic programme, as well as therapeutic guidelines and intervention strategies and specific techniques that can be used when the therapist and the client are involved in continuous psychotherapy. The results of the study indicated that it is important to focus on unresolved issues that happened earlier in the client’s life. Insight in the person as a whole, is required to be able to understand themselves better in the handling of their loss and the grieving process. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Voorligting)

The influence of competition and cooperation on children's movement competence and self-esteem

Wakelin, Justin 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M Sport Sc (Sport Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of two different approaches to presenting content during a sport module in physical education on the movement competence and self-esteem of children ages 11 - 12. One approach consisted of competitive activities and the other approach consisted of cooperative activities and cooperative learning. The following measurement criteria were selected to assess movement competence: response time, coincident timing, eye-hand coordination (throwing and catching) and eye-hand coordination (striking). Harter’s (1982) Perceived Competence Scale for Children was used to measure children’s perceptions their competence in terms of cognitive, social and physical competence and general self-esteem. Pre-tests were administered to a competitive activities group (n=14), a cooperative activities group (n=14) and a control group (n=25). Following a10-week intervention programme, the competitive group achieved significant improvements in response time and eye-hand coordination (striking). The cooperative group improved significantly in their response time. There were no significant improvements in the control group. None of the groups demonstrated significant changes in perceptions of cognitive, social or physical competence or on general self-esteem. This study concluded that participation in cooperative activities as well as competitive activities can help children develop their movement competence. Approaches to the development of positive self-perceptions and self-esteem still require further research. Neither the nature of competitive activities nor cooperative activities seemed sufficient to produce changes.
