Sociologia do trauma: elementos sociogenéticos e psicogenéticos / Sociology of trauma: sociogenetics and psychogenetics elements

Leonardo Fernandes Nascimento 02 December 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines the social processes related to the reception of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Brazil. Originating in the United States during the 1980, this diagnostic category first appeared in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-III, a publication of the American Psychiatric Association APA. It soon became one of the most studied and diagnosed syndrome of contemporary psychiatry. In order to map out the interrelated processes of diffusion and construction of PTSD I resorted to the analysis of a gamut sources: the daily operation of a research and treatment psychiatric institution, the verbal exchanges between psychiatrists and patients during medical appointments, psychiatric manuals and diagnostic tables and questionnaires, and mass media articles on PTSD. The approach adopted here intends to go beyond the apparent dilemma between a medicalized conception of PTSD as a natural phenomenon and an anthropological approach that sees PTSD as a culturally construed social experience. Finally, I also intend to show that the political and cultural underpinnings of the so called mental disorders cannot be correctly understood without taking into consideration the longue dureé dynamics of contemporary societies.

This dissertation presents an interpretive reading of part of Hilda Hilst’s theater, written at the end of the 1960s. At its very first chapter one comes across with comments on the critical fortunes already found in her dramatic writings, comparing similar perspectives and concepts in order to establish possible critical affiliations. In its second part one analyzes the play O novo sistema, trying to understand in it how the process of instauration of a State is represented and how the dialectics between barbarism and enlightenment is questioned, mainly based on the modern paradigms of scientific evolution and instrumental reason. The dissertation continues with an interpretive reading of As aves da noite, trying to capture its infernal atmosphere, in an intertextual dialog with Dante Alighieri, comparing it to certain aspects of modernity, found in social and administrative structures organized into the restriction imposed on spiritual evolution. The last pondering is on the play A morte do patriarca, in which one tries mainly to point out the figuration of the end of utopias and the proposition of new ways of narrating and creating the historical discourse. Along the dissertation, one pursues the constant dialog held by Hilda Hilst with a wide framework of discourses, authors, and texts of various genres and fields of knowledge - such as literature, science, pedagogy, philosophy, and theater -, configuring a structure in mosaic, resulting from a bricolage process with which the playwright from São Paulo Satate writes the three plays focused here

The ethics of deception : secrecy, transparency and deceit in the origins of modern political thought

Rubio, Diego January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to reflect on the importance that deception has had on the efficient functioning of societies and the development of individuals. I attempt to do so by adopting an historical perspective, analysing the development of the notion of lawful deception during the Middle Ages and, mainly, the Early Modern Age through theological and political discourses. The scope of my investigation is pan-European. I examine sources from the major Western territories, but I pay special attention to those produced in the Spanish-Habsburg Empire, which was a major political and cultural entity during this period. My claim is that between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, the West witnessed the formation of what I call an "Ethics of Deception:" a trend of thought that, without challenging the Augustinian prohibition of lying, recognised deception as intrinsic to nature and mankind, thereby justifying its use from moral and political perspectives. I explain how this intellectual process was conducted, fostered by new social realities, and helped by the flourishing of casuistry, tacitism and neostoicism. Furthermore, I argue that the acceptance of deception contributed to the creation of a new view of the world, language and human interaction. A view that is in the very basis of some of the most characteristic features of Baroque art and that opened the door to some of the most transcendental cultural changes of the period, such as the creation of politics governed by reason rather than faith, the secularisation of social behaviour, and the emergence of the notions of individualism, privacy and freedom of thought. For these reasons, I claim that deception played an important role in the shaping of Modernity.

Genèse et élaboration d’une « civilisation morale » : influences de l’expérience de guerre sur la pensée de Georges Duhamel (1902-1946) / Genesis and elaboration of a “moral civilization” : influences of the wartime experience on the Georges Duhamel’s thought (1902-1946)

Breton, Pauline 23 February 2016 (has links)
In the crossroads of history and literature, this biographical study consists at first of a questioning of the place of the individual in History. By means of an interdisciplinary collection and of an experimental approach of the genetics of texts, we have to determine the mark of the war on the genesis of Georges Duhamel's intellectual and philosophic position towards the “crisis of civilization”, brought to light by a reflection on the consequences of war. The demonstration aims to establish the correlation between his moral philosophy, his intellectual commitment and his wartime experience. After a state of the thought of the humanist on the eve of the war, the reconstruction of multiple “singular colloquium” which Georges Duhamel develops with the wounded soldiers of the Great War delivers the matrix of the foundations of the "moral civilization", gradually achieved over war stories. Window to an individual soul and part of the collective consciousness, this double perspective reconstitutes the path of the “moral civilization” from 1919 to 1939, from time for illusions to test of dangers. By games of scale, the cultural evolution of society and French consciousnesses from the First to the Second World War comes to light, as well as the durability of the ethical and metaphysical issues raised by the violence and the mass die-off at the turn of the century. Finally, the development ends on the meanings and the implications of the Second Conflict on the “moral civilization” envisaged in its double dimension, metaphysics and cultural.

Riverine and desert animals in predynastic Upper Egypt : material culture and faunal remains

Droux, Xavier January 2015 (has links)
Animals were given a preponderant position in Egyptian art, symbolism, and cultual practices. This thesis centres on the relationship between humans and animals during the predynastic period in Upper Egypt (Naqada I-IIIB, 4th millennium BCE), focusing on hippopotamus and crocodile as representatives of the Nile environment and antelope species as representatives of the desert environment. Depictions of these animals are analysed and compared with contemporary faunal remains derived from activities such as cult, funerary, or every day consumption. The material analysed covers several centuries: temporal evolutions and changes have been identified. The animals studied in this thesis were first used by the Naqada I-IIB elites as means to visually and practically express their power, which they envisioned in two contrasting and complementary ways. The responsibilities of the leaders were symbolised by the annihilation of negative wild forces primarily embodied by antelope species. In contrast, they symbolically appropriated positive wild forces, chief among them being the hippopotamus, from which they symbolically derived their power. Faunal remains from after mid-Naqada II are few, depictions of hippopotamus disappeared and those of crocodile became rare. Antelope species became preponderant, especially on D-ware vessels, which were accessible to non-elite people. However, toward the end of the predynastic period, antelope species came to be depicted almost exclusively on high elite material; they lost their individuality and became generic representatives of chaotic forces that the leaders and early rulers had to annihilate in order to maintain control and order.

The place of classical civilization in the school curriculum

Morton, Anne Caroline January 1985 (has links)
Classical Studies, as a subject, has not been seriously presented in many schools until fairly recently. Britain initiated the introduction of Classical Studies to the school curriculum in 1974, and interest has continued to grow steadily in other countries like America, New Zealand, Australia and Canada. This thesis was started on the assumption that this entirely new subject could be introduced into the curriculum for standard six and seven pupils at South African schools, for reasons which will be given later. As work continued on the thesis, the 1985 syllabus for Latin lent it further impetus. Some of the implications of the new Latin syllabus will be considered in the conclusion (Introduction, p. 6)

Haul Music : transnationalism and musical performance in the Saharaui refugee camps of Tindouf, Algeria / Transnationalism and musical performance in the Saharaui refugee camps of Tindouf, Algeria

Gimenez Amoros, Luis January 2012 (has links)
The thesis presents ethnographic data and musical analysis (in the form of transcriptions) of Haul music which is the music style performed by Bedouin societies in Trab el Bidan region (Mauritania, Western Sahara, northern Mali, southern Algeria and northern Morocco). It is based on field research undertaken in Algeria in 2004-05 in the refugee camps of Tindouf, Algeria, where Saharaui people (a Bedouin society)live in exile. This research is unique and original as Haul has not, until now, been explored in depth by any scholar. My research on Haul reveals that the changes in Saharaui music in the refugee camps of Tindouf reflect changes in the musical traditions of Bedouin societies as whole; changes that can be traced to the revolution which occurred in Western Sahara in 1975, and changes that are a result of the migrations and life in exile that followed. I argue that these changes occurred due to the transnational experiences undergone by Saharaui people in their forced exile (caused by the Moroccan state) from their homeland in Western Sahara to Algeria. Further, I assert that the invocation of memory in Bedouin musical styles is evidence of past musical practices being retained in contemporary Haul performance, although other musical changes are similarly in progress.
