Civility: Its Distinctness and Significance

Civility has many critics. Some challenge its distinctness as a virtue, others its moral significance. In this essay, I attempt to meet both challenges by offering an account of civility that stands distinct from other concepts and holds great value, both intrinsically and instrumentally. I claim that we show civility toward others when we dispute their ideas in ways that respect those persons' intrinsic worth. My account pays particular attention to the connections between civility, clarity and reconciliation--connections that make civility vital for modern pluralistic societies. I then consider a recent alternative to this conception of civility advanced by Calhoun (2000), arguing that it secures distinctness at the cost of moral significance. / Master of Arts

Study of the Morphology and Optical Properties of Propylene/Ethylene Copolymer Films

The development of a new catalyst system by The Dow Chemical Company has resulted in the production of isotactic polypropylene and propylene/ethylene copolymers with a unique defect and comonomer distribution. This work investigated the morphology and optical properties of cast and compression molded films made from the homopolymer and copolymers with up to 20 mol% ethylene comonomer. The defect distribution of the Dow Chemical copolymers resulted in materials with lower crystallinity than Ziegler-Natta or metallocene-made materials of similar ethylene content. These materials exhibited a gamma-phase crystal content ranging from 0-95%, depending on ethylene content, processing condition, and catalyst type. The gamma-phase crystal content of quiescently crystallized copolymer films was found to significantly influence their bulk optical properties, presumably through a change in the spherulite birefringence. The bulk haze, clarity, and transparency of a homopolymer film were degraded through annealing treatments, which decreased the fraction of gamma-phase crystallinity and increased the thickness of existing lamellae, resulting in an increased intensity of scattered light and a corresponding degradation in the optical properties of the film. The haze, clarity, transparency, and gloss of the copolymer films were found to improve at higher comonomer content and higher cooling rates. The variation in the length scale and degree of disorder in the bulk morphology of films processed under different conditions was shown to correlate with the optical quality of the films, with smaller scale morphologies scattering less light and resulting in films with better optical properties. It was also shown that no single metric can completely describe the optical quality of a polymer film; the relative importance of haze, transparency, and gloss, which depends on the intended application of the film, was discussed. The influence of surface scattering from the films was controlled through the compression molding of films using substrates of different surface roughness. The contribution of light scattered from the surface of the films was isolated and found to play a significant role in the degradation of optical quality. / Ph. D.

The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the topics of self-concept and motherhood. The part that deals with self-concept contains its definition, possible ways for it to be studied, its aspects, structure and dynamics. It also describes aspects examined in the research part i.e. self-concept clarity and self-esteem and provides an overview of commonly used methods for self-concept research. The part about motherhood formulates motherhood as a social construct and a biological aspect; it deals with the ambivalence to motherhood, motherhood and partner relationships, motherhood and work. Finally, it deals with the published research on the topic of self-concept in motherhood. The research part deals with self-concept clarity and self-esteem during motherhood. The aim is to explore self-concept clarity and self-esteem of mothers on parental leave with their first child old between (0.5-4 years) and compare them with mothers, which are also on parental leave with their first child old between (0.5-4 years) and work regularly; and also childless women aged 25 to 35 years. The following diagnostic tools were used that purpose: Self-concept Clarity Scale, Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale, NEO-FFI.

Impact du changement social et personnel dramatique sur la clarté de l'identité : le rôle de l'intégration du changement à l’identité

Les changements dramatiques sont fréquents dans la vie moderne. Néanmoins, l’étude des effets des changements dramatiques sur l’identité est lacunaire. Premièrement, aucune recherche ne démontre que le changement social dramatique a un effet négatif sur la clarté de l’identité culturelle, soit la capacité de l’individu à identifier avec certitude et de manière stable les caractéristiques de son groupe culturel (Usborne & Taylor, 2010). Deuxièmement, il n’a jamais été proposé que le changement personnel dramatique affecte négativement la clarté de l’identité personnelle (la capacité d’un individu à identifier avec certitude et de manière stable les caractéristiques de son identité personnelle; Campbell, 1990). Finalement, aucun mécanisme psychologique expliquant comment l’individu confronté à de tels changements peut renouer avec une identité claire n’a été proposé dans la littérature sur le changement social dramatique ou celle sur le changement personnel dramatique. La présente thèse répond à ces trois lacunes en 1) montrant que le changement social dramatique a un effet négatif sur la clarté de l’identité culturelle, 2) exposant que le changement personnel dramatique réduit la clarté de l’identité personnelle, et 3) exposant que l’intégration du changement dramatique à l’identité permet de clarifier l’identité. Pour répondre à ces trois objectifs, cinq études ont été exécutées et sont séparées en trois articles. Le premier article investigue les effets du changement social dramatique sur la clarté de l’identité culturelle à travers deux études expérimentales. Dans la première étude, l’indépendance du Québec est manipulée à titre de changement social dramatique alors que dans la seconde un retour à des rôles sexuels traditionnels est utilisé. Les résultats deux des études indiquent que le changement social dramatique a un effet négatif sur la clarté de l’identité culturelle. iii Le second article, qui comporte deux études, examine l’effet du changement dramatique personnel sur la clarté de l’identité personnelle ainsi que le rôle de l’intégration du changement personnel dramatique à l’identité sur la relation entre le changement personnel dramatique et la clarté de l’identité personnelle. Dans la première étude, un scénario d’immigration forcée est manipulé à titre de changement personnel dramatique. Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que le changement personnel dramatique a un effet négatif sur la clarté de l’identité personnelle. La seconde étude utilise un devis longitudinal afin de montrer que l’intégration du changement personnel dramatique à l’identité personnelle clarifie l’identité personnelle. Les résultats indiquent que les participants qui ont davantage intégré à leur identité personnelle le fait qu’ils sont des étudiants universitaires possèdent une identité personnelle plus claire que ceux qui ont moins intégré ce changement à leur identité. Le troisième article a pour but de montrer que l’intégration du changement social dramatique à l’identité culturelle augmente la clarté de l’identité culturelle. Pour y parvenir, le changement social dramatique (retour à des rôles sexuels traditionnels) et l’intégration de ce changement sont manipulés expérimentalement. Les résultats indiquent que la manipulation visant à favoriser l’intégration du changement n’a pas augmenté l’intégration du changement à l’identité et n’a pas augmenté la clarté de l’identité culturelle. / Dramatic changes, whether personal or social, are common in modern societies. Nevertheless, the effects of dramatic change on identity are understudied. Specifically, three important questions have yet to be answered. First, the negative impacts that dramatic social changes have on identity clarity, that capacity that individuals have to define the characteristics of their cultural group with certainty and consistency (Usborne & Taylor, 2010), have yet to be established. Second, the negative impacts that dramatic personal changes have on personal identity clarity, defined as the individual’s capacity to confidently and consistently identify the characteristics of his personal identity (Campbell, 1990), are still undetermined. Finally, nor the dramatic social change nor the dramatic personal change literature suggest a psychological mechanism explaining how an individual confronted to such changes may renew with a clear identity. The present thesis answers these three limitations by 1) showing that dramatic social change has a negative effect on cultural identity clarity, 2) exposing the negative effect of dramatic personal change on personal identity clarity, and 3) exposing that integrating the dramatic change to one’s identity helps to clarify this identity. To answer to these limitations, five studies were conducted and are reported in three articles. The first article investigate dramatic social change effects on cultural identity clarity in two experimental studies. In the first study, Québec’s independence is manipulated as a dramatic social change while the return to traditional gender role manipulates social change in the second study. The results of both studies demonstrate that dramatic social change decreases cultural identity clarity. v The second article, composed of two studies, focuses on dramatic personal changes. Specifically, the decrease of personal identity clarity following a dramatic personal change is shown. Furthermore, the role that integrating the dramatic personal change has on clarifying one’s personal identity following a dramatic personal change is brought to light. In the first study, a forced immigration scenario is manipulated as a dramatic personal change. The second study utilises a longitudinal design to show that integrating a dramatic personal change to personal identity clarifies personal identity. Results indicate that participants who integrated more to their personal identity the fact that they were university students possess a clearer personal identity than those who integrated that change to a lesser extent. The goal of the third article is to exhibit that integrating a dramatic social change to cultural identity strengthens cultural identity clarity. To achieve this goal, a dramatic social change (return to traditional gender roles) and the integration of the change are experimentally manipulated. Results show that the manipulation aimed at favoring the integration of the dramatic social change did not favor the integration of the change to the participants’ social identity and hence did not increase cultural identity clarity.

Identity-complexity, stigmatised identities and psychological well-being in adolescents

Research suggests that people define themselves, at least in part, in terms of their group memberships and that their psychology often depends on the state of the groups that defines the self (Haslam, Jetten, Postmes, & Haslam, 2009). Historically, the number of social groups in which people are active or with which they identity is seen as social capital and as leading to better mental health (e.g. identity-complexity, or social complexity, Linville, 1987). As such, social and clinical psychologists generally advocate and perpetuate the idea that multiple group membership and complex patterns of identification is psychologically beneficial to individuals. However, is identity-complexity straightforwardly positive for everyone? The current study examined how issues of identity-complexity are associated with psychological well-being in a young population (16-25). We hypothesised that identity-complexity might not be straightforwardly positive when multiple identities conflict with one another or when particular groups are stigmatised. The sample was made up of 464 young persons from a variety of social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds in schools, colleges, and universities. As hypothesised, participants who reported multiple identity conflicts and stigma were found to have less resilience and life satisfaction, and more depression and anxiety. Notably, findings also revealed that while it was psychologically advantageous for White participants to belong to multiple groups, the reverse was found for Black participants. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed. Results provide further insight on the relationship between multiple group membership and well-being.

Role clarity and instructional technology support: A naturalistic examination of various perceptions of the role of the ITRT within and across three high schools

Role clarity for any individual leads to more successful implementation of his or her job expectations. In a school, there are many individuals with various roles to fill. The Instructional Technology Resource Teacher (ITRT) has multiple roles within a school including: training teachers, designing integrated curriculum, managing learning resources, modeling instructional strategies, acting as a technology resource, assisting content specialists, and preview and recommending software. This study found that stakeholders in schools consistently recognize the ITRT as both a trainer and designer of integrated lessons. Other instructional support roles are recognized only by some stakeholders in schools. When a greater emphasis is placed on 21st Century skills throughout the school, there is greater consistency in the perceptions of the roles of the ITRT by stakeholders.

Parenting Styles, Internalization Of Values, And The Self-concept

In the present study, mediating effects of parenting dimensions between parent values and parent-child value similarity were examined along with the relationships between values, value priorities, parent-child value similarity, and self-evaluations. In the first study, Portrait Values Questionnaire (Schwartz, et al., 2001) was adapted to Turkish in a university sample, and its construct validity was investigated together with its psychometric qualities. In the second study, in both high-school and university samples, hypothesized relationships and mediation models were tested in, in which the mothers, fathers, and students served as the participants. Results indicated that value priorities of parents were systematically related to parenting dimensions. Parental acceptance mediated the relationship between parents&rsquo / Self- Transcendence values and parent-child value similarity, and parental control mediated the relationship between parents&rsquo / Self-Enhancement values and parentchild value similarity in both samples. Moderations effects were obtained in the university sample. Mothers&rsquo / socialization goals moderated the relationship between maternal control and mother-child value similarity in the Conservation domain. In addition, perceived importance of Self-Transcendence and Conservation values moderated the relationships between fathers&rsquo / parenting dimensions and father-child value similarity within the same domains. Value priorities were also found to be systematically related to self-esteem in the university sample per se, whereas relationships between parental congruence on value priorities, self-concept clarity and self-esteem were not significant. Results were discussed with reference to relevant literature together with implications and the limitations of the study. Contributions to current socialization research were elaborated and future research directions were highlighted.

Workplace attitudes among offshore team members

The attitudes of employees are key for ensuring the productivity and sustainability of an organisation. The present research aimed to explore obstacles and facilitators of positive team functioning in an offshore environment. Preliminary identification of obstacles and challenges to effective teamwork was achieved through an interview with two senior Human Resource managers at a large international bank, the primary location of which is in Australia. From this information, a survey was developed and distributed to members of an offshore Human Resource (HR) service centre consisting of 100 staff members, responsible for HR operations and described as an ‘extension’ or ‘captive’ team. An interview with management revealed that the effectiveness and sustainability of the current offshore team were of particular interest. Consideration of these issues and research into the effectiveness of virtual and captive teams led to a focus on organisational identity, work engagement, climate, trust, recognition from management, technology support, reliability of technology and goal clarity. Goal clarity and technology support were significant predictors of work engagement; low integration, goal clarity, technology support, reliability of technology and recognition from management were significant predictors of organisational identity. Thus, in an offshore environment, clear goals and the ability to complete those goals through use of efficient technologies are vital. This should impact the type of training given to offshore team members as well as the amount of technology support that is available to them.
