Le aflatossine sono potenti sostanze cancerogene presenti in natura. L'aflatossina b1 viene poco degradata nel rumine ed è escreta nel latte come aflatossina M1 con un carry over del 1-3%. Nel presente lavoro è stata studiata l'apparizione delle aflatossine nel sangue conseguente all'ingestione orale di un bolo contaminato per verificare come queste tossine sono assorbite nel tratto digestivo delle vacche da latte. La comparsa nel plasma e nel latte attraverso una mucosa tipicamente non di assorbimento per determinare il possibile meccanismo che regola l'assorbimento delle aflatossine è stato un ulteriore oggetto di studio. Un'altra prova è stata effettuata con vacche da latte per studiare il carry-over dell'aflatossina B1 nel latte in relazione al livello produttivo e alle cellule somatiche, come indicatore di processi infiammatori nella mammella. La capacità sequestrante di diversi tipi di adsorbenti è stata comparata in prove in vitro condotte in differenti condizioni sperimentali. Anche il comportamento del complesso aflattosina-adsorbente nel tratto digestivo di vacche in lattazione è stato studiato in vivo per mezzo della misurazione della presenza di aflatossina M1 nel latte. Una prova in vivo è stata effettuata per verificare l'effetto che la pellettatura o la semplice miscelazione di adsorbenti nei mangimi può avere nel migliorare l'efficienza di sequestro. / Aflatoxins are the most potent natural carcinogenic compound present in nature. Aflatoxin B1 is poorly degraded in the rumen and is excreted in milk as aflatoxin M1 with a carry-over rate of 1-3%. The present work investigated rate and schedule of aflatoxins plasma appearance following an oral contaminated bolus to verify how these toxins are absorbed in the gastro-intestinal tract of dairy cows. Aflatoxins plasma and milk appearances were also investigated using a non-absorbing mucosa to understand the possible aflatoxins absorption mechanism through mucous membranes. A trial was carried out in lactating dairy cows to study the carry over of ingested aflatoxin B1 in milk as aflatoxin M1 in relation to milk yield and somatic cells count, the latter as indicator of udder inflammatory processes. sequestering capacity of different kinds of mycotoxins sequestering agents were compared in vitro trial carried out at different experimental conditions. The behaviour of the aflatoxins-adsorbents complexes through digestive tract of lactating dairy cows were also investigated in vivo by measuring appearance of aflatoxin M1 into milk. An in vivo trial was conducted to verify if effect of pelletizing or simply mixing processes is useful to improve mycotoxins sequestering agents efficacy in dairy cow nutrition.

The behavior of drilled shaft retaining walls in expansive clay soils

Drilled shaft retaining walls are common earth retaining structures, well suited to urban environments where noise, space, and damage to adjacent structures are major considerations. The design of drilled shaft retaining walls in non-expansive soils is well established. In expansive soils, however, there is no consensus on the correct way to account for the influence of soil expansion on wall behavior. Based on the range of design assumptions currently in practice, existing walls could be substantially over- or under-designed. The goal of this research is to advance the understanding of the effects of expansive clay on drilled shaft retaining walls. The main objectives of this study are to identify the processes responsible for wall loading and deformation in expansive clay, to evaluate how these processes change with time, and to provide guidance for design practice to account for these processes and ensure adequate wall performance. The primary source of information for this research is performance data from a four-year monitoring program at the Lymon C. Reese research wall, a full-scale instrumented drilled shaft retaining wall constructed through expansive clay in Manor, Texas. The test wall was instrumented with inclinometers and fiber optic strain gauges, and performance data was recorded during construction, excavation, during natural moisture fluctuations, and during controlled inundation tests that provided the retained soil with unlimited access to water. In addition to the test wall study, a field assessment of existing TxDOT drilled shaft retaining walls was conducted. The main process influencing short-term wall deformation was found to be global response to stress relief during excavation, which causes the wall and soil to move together without the development of large earth pressures or bending stresses. Long-term wall deformations were governed by the development of drained conditions in both the retained soil and the foundation soil after approximately eight months of controlled inundation testing. To ensure adequate wall performance, the deformations and structural loads associated with short- and long-term conditions should be combined and checked against allowable values. / text

Evaluating organic compound sorption to several materials to assess their potential as amendments to improve in-situ capping of contaminated sediments

Contaminated sediments represent a common environmental problem because they can sequester large quantities of contaminants which can remain long after the source of pollution has been removed. From the sediment these hazardous compounds are released into the sediment porewater where it can partition into organisms in the sediment and bioaccumulate up the food web; leading to an ecological and human health concern. The objective of this work is to investigate an emerging option in contaminated sediment remediation; specifically an option for in-situ treatment known as active capping. Conventional capping uses clean sediment or sands to separate contaminated sediment from overlying water and biota. Active capping is the use of a sorptive amendment to such a cap to improve its effectiveness. This work focuses on granular materials as direct amendments to conventional caps including; granular activated carbon (GAC), iron/palladium amended GAC, alumina pillared clay, rice husk char, and organically modified clays. All materials were investigated in batch sorption tests of benzene, chlorobenzene, and naphthalene in DI water. Additionally porewaters from three sites were extruded and the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured. At Manistique Harbor and Ottawa River PCBs were identified as the primary contaminant of concern while PAHs were the contaminant of concern at the Grand Calumet River. At these sites a solvent extraction method was used to analyze the sediment concentrations of the contaminants of concern. From the former batch tests activated carbon and a commercially available organoclay were chosen for further investigation. This includes PAHs in batch sorption tests using extruded sediment porewater to investigate matrix effects, and PCB sorption in distilled water. / text

Effectiveness of Sealing Southeastern Arizona Stock Ponds with Soda Ash

From the Proceedings of the 1978 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 14-15, 1978, Flagstaff, Arizona / Pond seepage losses are a particularly serious problem in the semiarid southwest where runoff-carried calcium normally causes well-dispersed clay particles to aggregate and increase the porosity of stock pond sediments. Reported are the results of laboratory and field tests carried out by the USDA Water Conservation Laboratory in Phoenix, Arizona to determine the success of sodium carbonate (soda ash) as a soil sealant and to establish criteria for its use. Following tests two leaky ponds on Walnut Gulch, Arizona were treated with soda ash broadcast over the dry pond surfaces to the spillway elevation at a rate of 3365 Kg/ha and mixed with the pond sediment to a depth of 10 cm with a disc. Seepage losses were compared following the summer rainy season, and generally represent 20 day periods in September or October when the summer monsoon rains have ended. The late season seepage loss for the after treatment period each year from 1968 through 1974 was reduced about 50% and the treatment on one pond seems to have lasted much longer than anticipated, thus increasing the value of the treatment. A pretreatment laboratory seepage test is suggested to better determine the likelihood of treatment success.

Performance of penetrometers in deepwater soft soil characterisation

Offshore developments for hydrocarbon resources have now progressed to water depths approaching 2500 m. Due to the difficulties and high cost in recovering high quality samples from deepwater site, there is increasing reliance on in situ tests such as piezocone and full-flow (i.e. T-bar and ball) penetration tests for determining the geotechnical design parameters. This research was undertaken in collaboration with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), as part of a joint industry project, to improve the reliability of in situ tests in determining design parameters and to improve offshore site investigation practice in deepwater soft sediments. In this research, a worldwide high quality database was assembled and used to correlate intact and remoulded shear strengths (measured from laboratory and vane shear tests) with penetration resistances measured by piezocone, T-bar and ball penetrometers. The overall statistics showed similar and low levels of variability of resistance factors for intact shear strength (N-factors) for all three types of penetrometer. In the correlation between the remoulded penetration resistance and remoulded shear strength, the resistance factors for remoulded shear strength (Nrem-factors) were found higher than the N-factors. As a result, the resistance sensitivity is less than the strength sensitivity. The correlations between the derived N-factors and specific soil characteristics indicated that the piezocone N-factors are more influenced by rigidity index than those for the T-bar and ball penetrometers. The effect of strength anisotropy is only apparent in respect of N-factors for the T-bar and ball penetrometers correlated to shear strengths measured in triaxial compression. On the other hand, the Nrem-factors showed slight tendency to increase with increasing strength sensitivity but were insensitive to soil index properties. These findings suggest that the full-flow penetrometers may be used to estimate remoulded shear strength and are potentially prove more reliable than the piezocone in estimating average or vane shear strength for intact soil but the reverse is probably true for the estimation of triaxial compression strength.

Φωτοκαταλυτική διάσπαση αέριων ρύπων ΝΟx με τη χρήση τροποποιημένων αργιλικών ορυκτών

Στην παρούσα διατριβή ειδίκευσης παρασκευάσθηκαν νανοσύνθετα υλικά αργιλικών ορυκτών/διοξειδίου του τιτανίου (TiO2) για την περιγραφή και μελέτη των νέων βελτιωμένων χαρακτηριστικών τους και την εφαρμογή τους σαν φωτοκαταλύτες στη διάσπαση ανόργανων αέριων ρύπων οξειδίων του αζώτου (NOX). Τρία αργιλικά ορυκτά (σαπωνίτης, παλυγορσκίτης και αλλοϋσίτης) χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για την διεξαγωγή των πειραμάτων. Δείγματα σαπωνίτη και παλυγορσκίτη συλλέχθηκαν από τη λεκάνη του Βεντζίου στα Γρεβενά και αλλοϋσίτη από τη νήσο Λήμνο. Δύο διαφορετικές μορφές νανοσύνθετων αργιλικού ορυκτού/TiO2 παρήχθησαν με δύο διαφορετικές μεθόδους και χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για τη μελέτη της φωτοαποικοδόμησης ανόργανων αέριων ρύπων NOX : Υποστυλωμένα με TiO2 νανοσύνθετα σαπωνίτη (Ti-sap1, Ti-sap2) παρήχθησαν με τη μέθοδο της «solvothermal synthesis” χρησιμοποιώντας TiCl3 σαν πρόδρομο TiO2 και νανοσύνθετα TiO2/ παλυγορσκίτη (Ti-pal) και TiO2/ αλλοϋσίτη (Ti-hall) παρήχθησαν με τη μέθοδο κολλοειδούς διαλύματος σε πήκτωμα (sol-gel) χρησιμοποιώντας Titanium Tetraisopropoxide (Ti(OC3H7)4) σαν διάλυμα διασποράς-επικάθησης. Για τον χαρακτηρισμό των ιδιοτήτων των φυσικών και τροποποιημένων δειγμάτων εφαρμόστηκαν διαφορετικές τεχνικές (XRD, FTIR-ATR, SEM-EDS, TEM, DLS, BET, porosimetry). Τα νανοσύνθετα αποδείχθηκαν αρκετά αποτελεσματικά για τη φωτοδιάσπαση των αέριων ρύπων NOX συγκριτικά με τον standard τύπο διοξειδίου του τιτανίου, Degussa P25, που χρησιμοποιείται γιαυτό το σκοπό. Tα υποστυλωμένα νανοσύνθετα Ti-sap1 και Ti-sap2 (με αναλογίες μάζας TiO2:σαπωνίτη = 0.2:1 και 0.1:1 αντίστοιχα) έδειξαν αύξηση της ειδικής τους επιφάνειας συγκριτικά με το φυσικό δείγμα σαπωνίτη και μεσοπορώδη δομή με κατανομή πόρων 5.7-9.8nm για το Ti-sap1 και 3.8nm για το Ti-sap2. Και τα δύο νανοσύνθετα απέκτησαν αυξημένη φωτοκαταλυτική ικανότητα βάση του περιεχόμενου ποσοστού TiO2 συγκριτικά με τον standard P25 λόγω της ομοιογενούς διασποράς των σωματιδίων TiO2 στον σαπωνίτη αλλά συγκρίνοντας τα δύο δείγματα Tisap1 και Tisap2, το Tisap2 είχε καλύτερη φωτοκαταλυτική δράση από το Tisap1. Όσον αφορά τα νανοσύνθετα TiO2-pal και TiO2-hall τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν τη δημιουργία μεσοπορώδους δομής με πόρους 6.5 και 5.6 nm αντίστοιχα για το κάθε υλικό ενώ η μακροπορώδης δομή (lumen) του αλλοϋσίτη δεν υπήρχε στο τροποποιημένο δείγμα λόγω του ότι καλύφθηκε από τα νανοσωματίδια του TiO2 με αποτέλεσμα να προκύψει ένα υλικό με μικρότερο μέγεθος πόρων. Τα δύο δείγματα έδειξαν υψηλή φωτοκαταλυτική ικανότητα στη διάσπαση των αέριων ρύπων NOX υπό την επίδραση ορατής (λ>510nm) και υπεριώδους (λ>290nm) ακτινοβολίας σε σύγκριση με τα αποτελέσματα που έδωσε ο standard τύπος TiO2 P25. / In this thesis TiO2/clay nanocomposites have been synthesized and characterized as photocatalysts in the decomposition of NOx gases. Three different clay minerals (saponite, palygorskite and halloysite) have been used. The saponite and palygorskite samples were collected from Western Macedonia (Grevena, Ventzia basin) and halloysite from Lemnos island. The two different forms of nanocomposites that synthesized by two different methods were: TiO2 -pillared saponite (Ti-sap1, Tisap2) were successfully prepared by solvothermal synthesis using titanium trichloride as the precursor and TiO2- Palygorskite (Ti-pal) and TiO2-Halloysite (Ti-hall) nanocomposites were prepared by deposition of anatase form of TiO2 on the clay surfaces using a sol–gel method with titanium isopropoxide as a precursor. The characterization of the natural and modified samples was done by using different techniques (XRD, FTIR-ATR, SEMEDS, TEM, DLS, BET, porosimetry) The photocatalytic properties of the TiO2-clay nanocomposites were found to be better than that of the standard titania, Degussa P25 in decomposing NOX gases. The pillared TiO2 nanocomposites Ti-sap1, Tisap2 (mass ratio of TiO2:saponite= 0.2:1 and 01:1 respectively) showed a mesoporous structure compared to the natural saponite, with the distribution of pore diameters centered at 5.7-9.8 and at 3.8 nm, with high specific surface areas. Both TiO2-saponite nanocomposites showed higher photocatlytic activity than the standard (Degussa P25) based on TiO2 content because the TiO2 was well dispersed on saponite. By comparing the two modified samples Ti-sap1, Ti-sap2, the second one showed better photocatalytic activity than Ti-sap1 The results of the other two nanocomposites, Ti-hall and Ti-pal, showed mesopores of about 5.6 and 6.5 nm, respectively, while the macropores of halloysite (lumen) disappeared. The latter is attributed to the covering of the lumen of halloysite tubes by TiO2 nanoparticles and for that reason the pore size of the TiO2–treated halloysite was significantly smaller. The clay minerals- TiO2 samples showed significantly higher activity in decomposing NOx gas under visible-light irradiation (λ> 510 nm) and UV light irradiation (λ> 290 nm) compared to that of the standard commercial TiO2, P 25.

Ο ρόλος των αργίλων σε χώρους υγειονομικής ταφής απορριμμάτων : ορυκτολογική, γεωχημική και περιβαλλοντική προσέγγιση

Η ορυκτολογική σύσταση του αργιλικού υλικού που χρησιμοποιείται σε ένα χώρο υγειονομικής ταφής απορριμμάτων είναι καθοριστικής σημασίας όσον αφορά την πιθανή διαφυγή και μετανάστευση ρύπων στο περιβάλλον. Ο προσδιορισμός των αργιλικών ορυκτών που συμμετέχουν στο αργιλικό υλικό, θεωρείται βασική παράμετρος όσον αφορά την εκτίμηση της ικανότητας τους για συγκράτηση οργανικών και ανόργανων ρύπων. Για το σκοπό αυτό η αναγνώριση των ορυκτολογικών συστατικών του αργιλικού υλικού που χρησιμοποιήθηκε στο χώρο υγειονομικής ταφής της Ν. Ζακύνθου κρίθηκε απαραίτητη. Από τα αποτελέσματα της περιθλασιμετρίας ακτίνων Χ προέκυψε ότι στο αργιλικό υλικό που χρησιμοποιήθηκε μέσα στο χώρο υγειονομικής ταφής, διακρίθηκε μία ομάδα δειγμάτων πλούσια σε σμεκτίτη (μοντμοριλλονίτη) και μία δεύτερη πλούσια σε χλωρίτη και βερμικουλίτη. Παράλληλα, η χρήση της περιθλασιμετρίας ακτίνων Χ σε συνδυασμό με την ηλεκτρονική μικροσκοπία και τις γεωχημικές αναλύσεις έδωσαν πληροφορίες για την προέλευση των ιζημάτων, καθώς και για τη παρουσία ρύπων και τον τρόπο συγκράτησης τους στις ορυκτές φάσεις που τα απαρτίζουν. Η μελέτη των φασμάτων NMR στα εκχυλίσματα των δειγμάτων έδειξε την ύπαρξη κορυφών απορροφήσεως από πρωτόνια που σχετίζονται με ομάδες πολυσακχαριτών, πεπτιδίων/πρωτεϊνών, αλκοολών, αμινοξέων, ομάδων που περιέχουν –Cl, σουλφιδίων και μεθυλενίων –CH2– παρακείμενων σε ομάδες αιθέρων ή και εστέρων τα οποία παράγονται ως αποτέλεσμα υδρόλυσης και αναερόβιας ζύμωσης στα διαλύματα στραγγισμάτων. Επιπλέον, οι μικροαναλύσεις έδειξαν την παρουσία χλωρίου και θείου σε κρυστάλλους απατίτη, καθώς και χλωρίου, θείου και φωσφόρου σε αργιλικά ορυκτά στα δείγματα που βρίσκονταν σε επαφή με στραγγίσματα, ενισχύοντας την άποψη ότι οι παραπάνω ομάδες προέρχονται από την αλληλεπίδραση με τα στραγγίσματα. Η διαφορετική ορυκτολογική σύσταση του αργιλικού υλικού που χρησιμοποιήθηκε στο χώρο απόθεσης απορριμμάτων (χλωρίτης-μοντμοριλλονίτης) φαίνεται να ευνοεί την εκλεκτική προσρόφηση των διαφορετικών οργανικών ρύπων που συμμετέχουν στα στραγγίσματα και κατά συνέπεια θεωρείται επιθυμητή. Προς την κατεύθυνση αυτή εστιάστηκε το ενδιαφέρον της διατριβής οπότε και προέκυψε ότι ο χλωρίτης παρουσιάζει εκλεκτική προσρόφηση για τις αρωματικές ενώσεις σε αντίθεση με τον μοντμοριλλονίτη, ο οποίος επιδεικνύει εκλεκτική προσρόφηση εκείνων των αλειφατικών ομάδων που εκχυλίζονται από υδατικά διαλύματα. Επιπλέον, οι αρωματικές ενώσεις δεν εκχυλίζονται από υδατικά διαλύματα και κατά συνέπεια από ύδατα επιφανειακών απορροών με αποτέλεσμα να επιδεικνύουν περιορισμένη κινητικότητα. Αντίθετα, οι αλειφατικές ομάδες εκχυλίζονται από υδατικά διαλύματα ενώ η παρουσία τους ευνοεί το σχηματισμό ευδιάλυτων συμπλόκων με μέταλλα, γεγονός που οδηγεί τελικά σε κινητοποίηση τους μέσω των επιφανειακών απορροών. Τέλος, η προσρόφηση αμινομάδων από τα αργιλικά ορυκτά φαίνεται ότι οδηγεί μέσω μιας διαδικασίας φυσικής οργανοφιλίωσης στην μετατροπή των υδρόφιλων επιφανειών των αργιλικών ορυκτών σε υδρόφοβες και κατά συνέπεια την προσρόφηση των υδρόφοβων οργανικών συστατικών που περιέχονται στα διαλύματα στραγγισμάτων. Το γεγονός αυτό είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό εφόσον δείχνει την δυνατότητα για in situ μετατροπή των αργίλων σε οργανόφιλες αργίλους δημιουργώντας νέες προοπτικές στην διαχείριση των μη πολικών οργανικών ρύπων. / The mineralogy of a clay liner used in a landfill may influence the mobility of contaminants. Therefore, the determination of the types of clay minerals that are present in the landfill is of great importance for the assessment of their efficiency in the retention of organic and inorganic pollutants. In the present work, clay materials from an operating waste disposal facility in Zakynthos Island, Western Greece were collected in order to determine the different clay minerals present and their pollutant retention potential. Mineralogical analyses by XRD of the clay material collected from the landfill revealed a smectite (montmorillonite) rich and a chlorite/vermiculite rich material. The information obtained from X-ray Diffraction and SEM-EDS combined with chemical analyses provided valuable information concerning the provenance of the sediments and their retention potential. 1H NMR revealed that some of the organic components which are present in the samples are aliphatics, polysaccharides, alcohols, esters, Cl halogens, sulphides, amines, peptide/protein groups, amide and aromatics which are produced in the landfill as a result of several complex phenomena involving solubilization, hydrolyzation and anaerobic biological processes. SEM-EDS analyses showed the presence of chlorine and sulphur in apatite crystals, and of chlorine, sulphur and phosphorus in clay minerals suggesting the interaction of these minerals with leachate. The different clay mineralogy of the material used in the landfill, smectite (montmorillonite) rich and chlorite/vermiculite rich material facilitated the adsorption of different organic compounds, which is significant for the retention of pollutants. NMR analyses showed that aromatic moieties are preferentially adsorbed on chlorite than on montmorillonite, while those aliphatic moieties that are water soluble are preferentially adsorbed on montmorillonite. Aromatics are not accessible to rainwater and therefore hardly migrate. The aliphatic chains that are water accessible can be released to the environment through natural leaching by rainwater and since they are known to form soluble metal-organic complexes, supervision of the landfill is considered essential. Moreover, the interaction of amine groups with clay minerals in an aqueous system is favoured by the formation of an "insoluble" hydrophobic product leading to the formation of naturally organically modified clays. Thus clays become organophilic and capable of removing non ionic organic contaminants. This is of great importance for environmental applications since it demonstrates the in situ formation of organophilc clays in landfills, hence enabling effective containment and immobilisation of toxic organic compounds.

Another negative factor is the disposal of waste gypsum in inappropriate places, thus contributing to the degradation of environmental quality, due to the leaching of this waste and may trigger the formation of sulfuric acid. Therefore, based on this picture, processing and reuse of waste coating, combined with the ceramics industry, which is a strong potential in the reuse of certain types of waste, promote mutual benefits. Thus the overall objective of this work is to conduct a search with scientific and technological aspects, to determine the effect of the incorporation of the residue of plaster for coating, from the building, the formulation of bodies for red ceramic. The residue of plaster coating was collected and characterized. They were also selected raw materials of two ceramic poles of the state of Rio Grande do Norte and formulations have been made with the intention of obtaining those with the best physical and mechanical properties, the residue was added the percentage of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%, in the best formulation of ceramic industry 1 and, according the properties analyses, 5%, 10% and 15% as the best results of ceramic industry 2. The samples were sintered at temperatures of 850 ?C, 950 ?C and 1050 ?C, the heating rate of 5 ?C / min with isotherm of two hours. They were submitted to testing technology, such as lineal shrinkage, water absorption, apparent porosity, apparent density and bending resistence. The residue incorporation best results in the formulations of mass in red ceramic, were observed between the temperatures of 850 ?C and 950 ?C, in those formulations that have illite clays and medium plastic in their composition, in the range of 0% to 15% residue incorporated / Na constru??o civil, durante o processo de execu??o de grandes ou at? mesmo pequenas obras, h? um desperd?cio consider?vel de gesso nas etapas de revestimento, tornando-se este um fator negativo, pois parte das perdas destes processos construtivos permanece incorporada nas constru??es, na forma de componentes, cujas dimens?es finais s?o superiores ?quelas projetadas. Outro fator negativo ? a disposi??o dos res?duos de gesso em locais inadequados, contribuindo assim para a degrada??o da qualidade ambiental, devido ao processo de lixivia??o deste res?duo, podendo desencadear na forma??o de ?cido sulf?rico. Baseado neste panorama, a transforma??o e o reaproveitamento dos res?duos de revestimento, aliada ? ind?stria da cer?mica, que ? um forte potencial no reaproveitamento de alguns tipos de res?duos, promoveria benef?cios m?tuos. O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi de realizar uma pesquisa com aspectos cient?ficos e tecnol?gicos, para verificar o efeito da incorpora??o do res?duo de gesso para revestimento, proveniente da constru??o civil, na formula??o de massas para cer?mica vermelha. As mat?rias-primas foram coletadas de dois p?los cer?micos do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte e formuladas com o intuito de obter aquelas com as melhores propriedades f?sicas e mec?nica, tendo sido incorporados os percentuais 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% e 30% de res?duo, na melhor formula??o da ind?stria cer?mica 1 e, de acordo com a an?lise dos seus resultados, de 5%, 10% e 15% na melhor formula??o da ind?stria cer?mica 2. Inserido neste cenário, o estado de Sergipe é hoje um dos pólos cerâmicos do país. Grande parte das argilas disponíveis no estado possui um elevado teor de carbonato de cálcio, que internacionalmente sofre restrições na sua utilização no processo de fabricação de revestimentos semiporosos e gressificados, por monoqueima rápida. O presente trabalho estudou composições de três argilas naturais vermelhas com diferentes teores de carbonato de cálcio utilizados por uma unidade industrial do estado de Sergipe. Uma ampla caracterização destas argilas foi realizada tanto na forma de pó, quanto nos corpos cerâmico sinterizados, onde se evidenciou a influência da composição mineralógica no fenômeno de expansão por umidade. A aplicação da dilatometria se mostrou viável como ferramenta para o desenvolvimento de formulações cerâmicas a partir de argilas naturais. Outro aspecto evidenciado no estudo é que um aumento nos teores de carbonato na formulação da massa cerâmica proporciona uma diminuição da expansão por umidade à medida que favorece a formação de fases cristalinas de aluminossilicatos de cálcio e uma menor formação de fases vítreas. Foi também verificado o efeito de aditivos, pressão de compactação e ciclo de queima na identificação da melhor formulação para utilização industrial. Definiu-se então uma composição que atendeu as exigências das normas, possibilitando o emprego destas argilas calcificas no processo de fabricação, com um ciclo de queima muito rápido, o que propiciará um forte retorno econômico para a unidade industrial. / In the world actual economy, Brazil appears as the biggest occidental market for ceramic tiles covers and as the third major world exporter of these products. Inserted in this scenery, the state of Sergipe is nowadays one of the ceramics polés of Brazil. A large quantity of available clay in Sergipe has a high percentage of calcium carbonate that is not well accepted in the manufacturing of semi porous and vitrified tiles covers, due to single fast firing. This report studied composition of three natural red clays with different rates of calcium carbonate used in one industrial plant in the state of Sergipe. A broad characterization of these clays has been made not only as a powdered shape but also as in the sinterized ceramics body, resulting the evidence of the influence of the mineralogical composition on the moisture expansion phenomena. The application of the dilatometer showed itself as a tool for the development of ceramics formulations based on the natural clays. Another aspect became evident on the studies, so as the increasing on the rates of carbonate in the ceramics mass provides a decrease in the moisture expansion while it enables the forming of crystalline phases of calcium aluminum silicates and a smaller formation of vitreous phase. Has been also observed that the effect of additives, compacting pressure and the firing cycle, during identification of the best formulation for industrial uses. Has been defined also a composition that attended the exigencies of normal standards, enabling the use of these calcites clays in the production process, deriving a very short firing cycle, which will provide a strong economical return rate for the industrial plant.

Para a determinação das propriedades de consolidação foram realizados ensaios de adensamento no aparelho edométrico, com amostras indeformadas, representativas de diversas profundidades da camada de argila. Também realizou-se ensaios de caracterização da argila, em termos de plasticidade, granulometria e pesos específicos. Os parâmetros de consolidação e os parametros de consistência da argila obtidos durante o programa de laboratório foram analisados em relação as suas variações com a profundidade. Os resultados desta análise, mostram que o coeficiente de consolidação Cv e o coeficiente de permeabilidade K, do solo estudado, são praticamente constantes ao longo da camada, enquanto que o coeficiente de compressibilidade av, o índice de compressão Cc e os índices de vazios, decrescem com a . profundidade. Estes resultados permitiram também formular relações matemáticas, algumas delas com notável validade estatística, permitindo consequentemente a sua utilização em anteprojetos de Engenharia Civil. / The study presented in this dissertation concerns the consolidation of a soft clay from the city of João Pessoa, in the State of Paraíba, Brazil. The consol i dation properties were deter mined by means of consolidation tests in an oedometer, with undisturbed samples representative of various depths within the clay layer. Tests were also performed in order to determine the clay cha rac ter i s t i es , in terms of plasticity, grain size and specific gravity. The parameters of consol i da ti on and coji sistency obtained during the laboratory program were analyzed in relation to their variation as a function of depth. The results of this analysis show that the coefficient of consol idation Cy and the coefficient of permeability K, of the soil which was studied are practically constant throughout the layer, while the coefficient of compressibility av, the compressive index Cc, and void ratio decrease with increase of depth. These results also permit the formulation of mathematical reiationships, some of them showing notable statistical validity, thus permitting their use in civil engineering designs.
