The reason for that is because these factors would play an important role in group collaboration, as well as they would act in the construction of the human being relationships in a socio-cultural perspective. According to the vision of some educational researchers, psico-pedagogues and psychologists, in collaborative learning activities, socio-affective individual abilities should be conjugated in order to produce a collective and effective work in the construction of knowledge. Although some pedagogues and other educational researchers point out the importance of considering those factors in collaborative learning activities, few works are appreciating them. This way, the proposal of this work is to define some socio-affective factors to be inferred in collaborative learning systems in order to promote collaboration in these environments. The work will also show the importance of these socio-factors for those virtual environments. It will be also presented mechanisms for the inference of the considered socio-affective factors. / Atualmente, fatores sócio-afetivos, como cooperação, motivação, afinidades sócio-cognitivas, proatividade, interação, entre outros, tendem ser bastante explorados na relação professor-aprendiz e entre aprendizes, de forma que os resultados da construção do conhecimento sejam alcançados de forma colaborativa. A razão disto é que estes fatores desempenhariam um papel de fomento à colaboração, bem como atuariam na construção das relações do ser humano dentro de uma perspectiva sócio-cultural. Segundo a visão de alguns pesquisadores da educação, psicopedagogos e de psicólogos, em atividades colaborativas de aprendizagem, habilidades individuais sócio-afetivas de um indivíduo precisam ser conjugadas com as de outras pessoas de forma a produzirem um trabalho coletivo. Embora os padagogos e outros pesquisadores da educação apontem a importância de considerar esses fatores em atividades colaborativas de aprendizagem, poucos ambientes educacionais colaborativos assim estão fazendo. Desta maneira, a proposta deste trabalho é definir fatores sócio-afetivos a serem considerados em ambientes colaborativos de aprendizagem a fim de promover a colaboração nestes ambientes. O trabalho também mostrará a importância dos fatores sócio-afetivos para àqueles ambientes virtuais. Serão, também, propostos mecanismos para a inferência dos fatores sócio-afetivos considerados.

Technology-enhanced statistics learning experiment:a case study at upper secondary level

Abstract The aim of this study was to examine and develop statistics education by implementing computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL). This study has been influenced by design-based research, and it focuses on describing the statistical learning of upper secondary school students (N=138) in a CSCL environment, both quantitative and qualitative methods have been utilised. The present study is filling a gaping void in classroom study and disseminates new knowledge with a novel approach in combining CSCL, mathematics education at secondary level and statistical literacy. First, the students’ starting level in statistical literacy was assessed in the pre-test in which students’ perceptions and knowledge of statistics was evaluated. The results showed that students had a severe lack of understanding of basic statistical concepts. Second, CSCL supports students in collaborating asynchronously in different small-groups by using technology. Results suggest that studying in a group fostered their learning and the electronic and interactive material clarified learned topics which was designed by integrating the principles of cognitive theory of multimedia learning. Third, the shift from traditional didactic instruction towards student-centred CSCL learning was challenging for students. According to the results, students had only a few earlier experiences in learning CSCL environments. The quality of the students’ conversational acts varied considerably. It seems that learning how to collaborate productively needs practice. According to the results, the articulation and quality of mathematical discussion increased as students’ acquaintance with their teammates improved. Students’ collaboration in small groups was examined by using video analyses and content analyses. Contact summary sheet -instrument used in analyses facilitated observation of the magnitude and quality in student’s inter-subjective phenomena in collaborative learning. Fourth, students in the treatment group had better learning outcomes than students in the control group. The results suggest a statistically significant difference between treatment and control groups only in the delayed post-test and the effect size indicates a medium effect. The interactive material and CSCL seemed to foster and facilitate the development of statistical literacy. Nevertheless, students were critical of studying in the CSCL environment. / Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tutkia ja kehittää tilastojen opetusta hyödyntäen tietokoneavusteista yhteisöllistä oppimista (CSCL). Tutkimus on saanut vaikutteita design-perustaisesta tutkimuksesta ja se keskittyy kuvaamaan lukio-opiskelijoiden (N=138) tilastojen oppimista CSCL-ympäristössä ja tutkimuksessa on hyödynnetty kvantitatiivisia ja kvalitatiivisia menetelmiä. Tämä tutkimus lisää tietämystä luokkahuonetutkimuksesta ja yhdistää CSCL:n ja tilastollisen lukutaidon opetuksen toisella asteella. Ensimmäiseksi oppilaiden tilastollisen lukutaidon lähtötaso mitattiin alkutestissä, missä arvioitiin heidän ennakkokäsityksiä ja tietoa tilastoista. Tutkimustulokset osoittivat, että oppilailla oli suuria vaikeuksia ymmärtää tilastollisia peruskäsitteitä. Toiseksi CSCL-teknologia tukee asynkronisesti pienryhmätyöskentelyä. Tulosten mukaan opiskelu ryhmissä tuki opiskelijoiden oppimista ja sähköinen ja interaktiivinen oppimateriaali selkiytti opeteltavia asioita, joka oli suunniteltu kognitiivisen multimedia oppimisteorian periaatteiden mukaisesti. Kolmanneksi opiskelijat kokivat haasteellisuutta siirryttäessä perinteisestä opettajajohtoisesta opetusmenetelmästä oppijakeskeiseen CSCL-oppimismenetelmään. Tulosten mukaan opiskelijoilla on ollut vain vähän aikaisempia kokemuksia oppimisesta CSCL-ympäristöissä. Opiskelijoiden funktionaalisten roolien laadut vaihtelivat huomattavasti. Näyttää ilmeiseltä, että produktiivisen yhteistoiminnallisuuden oppimiseen tarvitaan harjoittelua. Tutkimustulosten mukaan artikulaatio ja laatu matemaattisissa keskusteluissa lisääntyivät oppimistilanteissa, kun opiskelijoiden ryhmätyöskentelytaidot kehittyivät. Opiskelijoiden pienryhmätyöskentelyä tutkittiin video- ja sisällönanalyysin avulla. Analysoinnissa käytetty contact summary sheet -instrumentti auttoi havainnoimaan opiskelijoiden intersubjektiivista yhteistoiminnallisen oppimisen laatua ja määrää. Neljänneksi opetuskokeiluun osallistuneilla oli parempia oppimistuloksia verrattaessa kontrolliryhmän oppilaisiin. Tutkimustulosten mukaan tilastollisesti merkittävä ero oli havaittavissa opetuskokeilu- ja kontrolliryhmän välillä ainoastaan viivästetyssä lopputestissä ja vaikutuksen suuruus on keskivoimakasta. Interaktiivinen opetusmateriaali ja CSCL näyttäisivät edistävän tilastollisen lukutaidon kehittymistä. Tästä huolimatta, opiskelijat suhtautuivat kriittisesti opiskeluun CSCL-ympäristössä.

Learning through collaborative design in a virtual environment : a case study

This paper reports on an on-line collaborative design project of which the final outcome was a comprehensive, international World-Wide Web database of experts in the field of Instructional Technology as part of a learning task for post-graduate students in the same field. The main objective of the study was to determine the extent to which computer-supported collaborative design without face-to-face contact could be used to create a useful resource in this field. Sub-questions that arose were: How does a computer-supported collaborative design process evolve in an open-ended learning environment? What support could student designers working on a real-life project expect from their peers and experts in the field? How does one judge the success of such a project? What direct benefits can students derive from computer-supported collaborative design? The iterative design process was explored by means of an action research case study methodology. Social Media for international collaborative learning – A case study from Palestine

International experience is important to prepare university students for the modern labor market in the globalized knowledge economy. While financial, societal, and political obstacles may limit students’ mobility in developing countries, using Web 2.0 and Social Media applications can enable them to engage in a virtual social learning environment to interact with peers and instructors abroad in an enjoyable, inclusive international Virtual Collaborative Learning experience. This study investigates the factors influencing Palestinian students’ perception of this experience, and explores the enhancement potential to fit the needs of developing countries. Thirty-four contextual, design, and individual factors were linked by course participants from Palestine to their reported motivation, enjoyment, and satisfaction in this new learning scenario. Recommended improvements in the design and implementation of similar arrangements are concluded from the qualitative evaluation of this empirical case study.

Das hochschulübergreifende Lehrangebot „Personalwirtschaft integrativ und virtuell“ steht für ein interaktives sowie flexibles Lernarrangement. Ziel des kooperativen Projektes zwischen den wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultäten der Technischen Universität Dresden (TU Dresden) und der Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Dresden (HTW Dresden) ist die Realisierung eines lernerzentrierten, integrativen und virtuellen Lehrkonzepts. Der vorliegende Beitrag fokussiert sich in diesem Zusammenhang auf die Darstellung des didaktischen Grundkonzeptes und damit einhergehend auf die Schaffung eines generischen Frameworks zur Übertragung auf ähnliche Lehr-/Lernszenarien in der Hochschullehre. Zudem werden die aus der Durchführung des kooperativen Lehr-Lern-Projektes resultierenden Herausforderungen und Potenziale im Sinne der Nachhaltigkeit und Verstetigung der Projektergebnisse für weiterführende Lehrangebote herausgearbeitet.

Leveraging CSCL technology to support and research shared task perceptions in socially shared regulation of learning

Collaboration is a vital skill in today’s knowledge economy. Regrettably, many learners lack the regulatory skills required for complex collaborative tasks. In particular, groups struggle to construct shared task perceptions of collaborative tasks on which to launch engagement. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation was to examine how computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) tools can be leveraged to support shared task perceptions for regulating collaboration. Because investigating this process brings forth a wide array of methodological challenges, a second purpose of this dissertation was to explore how CSCL tools can be used as a methodological solution for capturing this process. Towards this end, research unfolded across one conceptual paper and two empirical studies: (a) Miller & Hadwin (2015a) extended work conceptualizing self-, co-, and shared-regulation in successful collaboration and drew on this theoretical framework to propose ways in which CSCL tools can be designed to support and research regulation of collaboration; (b) Miller, Malmberg, Hadwin, & Järvelä (2015) investigated the processes that contributed to and constrained groups’ construction of shared task perceptions in a CSCL environment in order to inform further refinement of supports; (c) Miller & Hadwin (2015b) examined the effects of tools providing different levels of individual and group support on construction of shared task perceptions and task performance. Together, findings revealed the potential of blending pedagogical tools to support shared task perceptions with research tools for examining and understanding regulation. In particular, findings evidenced shared task perceptions to be a complex and challenging social phenomenon and shed light on ways in which CSCL tools may prompt and promote this process. In addition, data generated by learners as they interacted with CSCL supports created valuable opportunities to capture shared task perceptions as they unfolded in the context of meaningful collaborative tasks across the individual and group level. / Graduate / 0525 / fgage@uvic.ca

Under de senaste åren har det skett en integrering av informations- och kommunikationsteknik (IKT), exempelvis datorer, i såväl samhället som i skolans undervisning. Syftet med den aktuella litteraturstudien är att undersöka vilka samtalsaktiviteter som eleverna deltar i då de använder bärbara datorer eller handdatorer under matematiklektionerna, samt att belysa vilka möjligheter och hinder som framträder. Som teoretisk utgångspunkt ligger ett sociokulturellt perspektiv på lärandet där språket, den miljö som eleven befinner sig i och de redskap som används beskrivs som betydelsefulla aspekter för lärandet. I läroplanen förtydligas att elever ska ges möjlighet att delta i kommunikativa samspel och att modern teknologi ska användas så att eleven kan inhämta, lära och utveckla sin förmåga att kommunicera matematik. Tidigare forskning kring matematik visar att elevers kollaborativa lärande och användande av IKT främjar elevernas matematiska kunskaper och delaktighet i samtalet. Litteraturstudiens resultat visar att elever i huvudsak deltar i muntliga samtal och att deras kollaborativa lärande och matematiska förståelse ökar då de använder datorer. Handdatorer beskrivs dessutom kunna möjliggöra för en ökad mobilitet vilket medför att elevernas i större utsträckning kan välja med vem de vill samtala. / In recent years there has been an integration of information and communication technologies (ICT), such as computers, in society as well as in education. The purpose of the current literature survey is to examine the communication between students when they use a laptop or a handheld computer during math class, as well as to highlight the opportunities and obstacles that appear. As a base for this work a sociocultural perspective on learning is used where the language, the pupils studying environment and the tools that are used, are important aspects of learning. The curriculum states that the students should be given the opportunity to participate in communicative interactions and that modern technology should be used so that students can obtain, learn and develop their ability to communicate mathematics. Earlier research in mathematics shows that the student’s collaborative learning and the use of ICT promotes the pupils mathematical knowledge and involvement in the conversation. The result of the survey shows that students mainly participate in oral communication and their collaborative learning and mathematical understanding increase when they use a computer. Another conclusion from the survey is that handheld computers allow mobility, which improves the students opportunities to choose who they want to talk to.
