An investigation of intellectual capital disclosure in annual reports of UK firms : practices and determinantsLi, Jing January 2009 (has links)
This study examines the intellectual capital (IC) disclosure practices in the annual reports of 100 listed UK firms selected from sectors considered to be IC-intensive. It also investigates the possible determinants of such disclosure practices from the three perspectives of corporate governance structure, company characteristics and market factors. IC disclosures were captured using content analysis, and were measured by a disclosure index, supported by word count and percentage of word count metrics to assess the variety, volume and focus of IC disclosure respectively, at both overall and subcategory levels. The presentational formats and locations of IC disclosures were also recorded. The results indicate that the UK firms sampled provide considerable IC information in their annual reports, mainly in text form, with popular use of numerical information, while the use of graphs and pictures for many IC elements remains low. The distribution of IC disclosures, captured in three categories, varies by the three measures of disclosure applied. IC information was found in virtually all sections of the annual report and was most concentrated in the Operating and Financial Review section. IC terms typically used in the academic literature do not feature in the sampled annual reports. The results of the statistical analyses based on the three measures of IC disclosure indicate significant associations with a number of corporate governance factors (i.e. board composition, share concentration, audit committee size and frequency of meeting, board directors' shareholding, audit committee directors' shareholding, and board directors with cross-directorships), company characteristics (i.e. firm size, profitability, and listing age), and market factors (i.e. 'hidden value', share price volatility, share turnover, and multiple listing). These findings offer support for a number of theories, such as information asymmetry, agency and signalling theory. The influence of these explanatory factors on human, structural and relational capital disclosures, based on all three disclosure measure metrics, as well as on the format of IC disclosure, was also explored. The study also finds that its IC framework is more effective than a less detailed framework used in prior studies for the purpose of examining IC disclosure practice and its determinants. The study contributes to the further advancement of the state of knowledge in relation to IC disclosure both empirically and methodologically. It provides information users, preparers, regulatory bodies and academics with a state-of-the-art understanding of IC disclosure practices in the annual report. The transparent content analysis process enables future replication and comparison of results. The rigorous measurements of IC disclosure, the greater specificity of disclosure about the location and presentational format, and the more detailed IC research framework can be usefully applied by other studies. By examining the relationship between explanatory factors and IC disclosure, it helps shareholders and other groups of information users as well as the regulatory bodies to identify factors that may encourage IC disclosure in the annual report.

An Analysis: wealth creation by the industrial companies listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange of South Africa, 2005 - 2014Oke, Oji Okpusa 10 1900 (has links)
M. Tech (Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Management Sciences) Vaal University of Technology. / Numerous studies have been conducted to ascertain factors that impact on wealth creation of companies. It has been suggested by various researchers that economic value added (EVA) could be used to measure company wealth creation and a number of factors have been suggested that contribute to wealth creation for company shareholders.
The purpose of this study is to determine the company characteristics that influence wealth creation. The study uses EVA, the dependent variable, as a measure of a company’s wealth creation. The company characteristics, independent variables, are operating capital size, capital gearing, export and domestic distribution market segments, sub-sectors and the type of product companies release into the market. Identifying company characteristics that influence wealth creation could enlighten investors on where capital should be directed in order to maximise wealth creation for the companies’ shareholders and the entire economy.
Logistic regression analysis models were used to analyse 61 industrial companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock exchange (JSE) for the 10-year period of 2005 to 2014. The use of logistic regression for this analysis was necessitated by the binary nature of the data (EVA positive or negative) and logistic regression analysis is suitable for such binary data. A series of tests were conducted to assess the suitability of logistic regression analysis in evaluating the impact of company characteristics on EVA. The classification accuracy test, which shows the predictive accuracy or the forecast strength of the logistic regression model for this study yielded a forecast strength of the highest of 97.2 percent for 2006 and lowest of 63.2 percent for 2014. The results indicated the appropriateness of the logistic regression model for the study.
The data on the EVA of companies were collected from INET-BFA. Other sets of data also obtained from INET-BFA include companies’ volume of operating capital, capital gearing, company product types, distribution channels and sub-sectors to which each company belongs. The historical inflation and exchange rates were also obtained and applied in comparing with EVA. The comparison was to determine if there was any relationship between EVA, exchange rates and inflation.
Results of the logistic regression analysis model reveal that the sub-sector factor, capital size factor and capital gearing factor impact on EVA, while market segment and company product type do not impact on EVA. The results show that the sub-sector categories of manufacturing, retail and extraction have significant positive impact on EVA while property management does not impact on EVA. The large capital category of the capital size factor shows significant positive impact on EVA while the medium capital category shows a negative impact on EVA, leaving small capital size having no impact on EVA. The high as well as moderate capital gearing categories of the capital gearing factor show negative impact on EVA, while low gearing shows no impact on EVA. However, some years covered in the study did not have any significant factors.
Results of wealth creation evaluation of the industrial companies using EVA as a metric reveals that the industrial companies created more value than was destroyed in terms of EVA. The results show that manufacturing, extraction and retail sub-sectors achieved net positive EVA, while the property management sub-sector achieved net EVA negative in the 10-year period. Furthermore, results of EVA comparison with foreign exchange and inflation rates indicated a relationship between EVA, exchange rate and rate of inflation. The results show that as inflation rises, foreign exchange depreciates, while EVA performance of companies drops during the same period.
Findings and recommendations of this study are important to company managers as they offer crucial information regarding the types of activities organisations could engage in and for investors to consider the types of businesses in which to invest. The findings are also important in suggesting how companies could organise their capital structure as well as the size of the capital in order to optimise wealth creation. Such considerations by company managers and investors alike would help to increase wealth creation within the economic system.
This study made use of five company characteristics, which were stated into various categories. Additional company characteristics should be used in a further study to identify other company attributes that may impact on EVA. There is also the need to carry out further studies using other methods to find out if different results could be achieved. In addition, a study is recommended to establish why no significant factor was identified in some of the years.

Frivillig redovisning i svenska börsnoterade företag : En kvantitativ studie inom sjukvårdssektornCarlsson, Sofia, Mehrabi, Nanor January 2023 (has links)
Företagen uppfyller dock ungefär i genomsnitt lika stor andel inom varje område i indexet. / Aim: Financial management aims to convey a justified image of a company's financial performance and is addressed to the company's external environment. Annual reports are not only a way to present the financial performance but also a way to communicate with external stakeholders. Information that’s published in the reports are regulated by differentregulations. Besides obligated disclosure, companies also choose to publish additional information, this type of information is called voluntary disclosure. Companies within the healthcare sector are often publicly scrutinized, thus they frequently disclose voluntarily in order to attain and maintain legitimacy. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between company characteristics, and the extent of voluntary disclosure in listed companies within the Swedish healthcare sector and which type of information the voluntary disclosure consists of. The research questions formulated are: what are the determinants of voluntary disclosure, and what type of information is voluntarily disclosed. Method: The methodology used for this study is a quantitative method. Initially a correlation analysis was done, to determine the correlation between each independent variable. Thereafter a multiple regression analysis was implemented to determine the relationship between the dependent variable and each of the independent variables. The data for the independent variables was collected from the database Retriever and Nasdaq Stockholm (Stockholm Stock Exchange). The data for the independent variable was collected manually from annual reports for the fiscal year 2021. The sample size for this study is 58 listed companies, from a population of 60 companies. Results and conclusion: The results indicate that the determinants profitability, liquidity, and ownership structure are statistically associated with the extent of voluntary disclosure. On average, general information was disclosed the most, and stock related information was disclosed the least. However, the companies fulfill roughly the same percentage in each area of the index on average. As a result, there is no outstanding pattern regarding which area is disclosed the most and the least. Contribution of the thesis: There is a lack of studies of Swedish companies within specific sectors, since past studies are more general and include companies from different industries. In addition, prior studies focus more on the determinants of voluntary disclosure and less on what it consists of. Therefore, this thesis contributes to a more recent study of voluntary disclosure within Swedish listed companies within a specific sector. Suggestions for future research: A suggestion for future studies like this one, may be studying voluntary disclosure within different sectors. Another suggestion may also be studying non-listed companies or companies outside of the EU, since implementation of regulations vary amongst these. It may also be of interest to study other determinants of voluntary disclosure than those considered in this study.

TCFD - ett nytt sätt att klimatredovisa. : En studie av nordiska bolag / TCFD - a new way to climate report. : A study of Nordic companies.Gustavsson, Annie, Schött, Freja January 2022 (has links)
Abstract Master Thesis in Business Administration School of Business and Economics at the Linneaus University Authors: Freja Schött and Annie Gustavsson Supervisor: Natalia Semenova Examiner: Anna Stafsudd Title: TCFD – a new way to climate report. A study of Nordic companies. Background: The reporting of risks and opportunities associated to climate change have great importance to investors when executing their risk assessment of a company. Therefore, TCFD published recommendations for climate reporting with the intent of making the reporting more standardized and comparable. Previous research shows low compliance with the TCFD recommendations. This study questions the factors affecting the compliance with TCFD and how the compliance varies between the Nordic companies. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate which company characteristics contribute to Nordic companies’ level of compliance with the TCFD recommendations. Method: This study is taking a deductive approach. Furthermore, a cross- sectional design is applied and with a quantitative content analysis 77 Nordic companies’ annual-, climate- and sustainability reports was examined for the year 2020. The empirical data was analyzed using statistical models to test hypothesis based on previous research and legitimacy theory. Conclusions: Our study finds that size, environmental performance, debt, the energy and industrial sector, and country are company characteristics which affect the compliance of climate reporting according to TCFD. In addition, the empirical result indicates that financial performance, shareholder distribution, state ownership and some sectors cannot explain the compliance.
