Exploring fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME) manufacturers need for innovation to achieve growth in KwaZulu-Natal

Nze, Grace O January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in compliance with the requirements for the Masters Degree in Technology: Business Administration, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / This study explores South African Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) SMME manufacturers’ need for innovation to achieve growth in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). South Africa suffers from a high rate of unemployment, with an official unemployment rate estimate of 24.7% (Statistics South Africa, 2013). This high rate of unemployment in South Africa is partly attributed to the failure rate of SMMEs, which is between seventy and eighty percent. Small enterprises encounter greater barriers than medium-sized and large enterprises in accessing finance for innovation, commercializing new ideas and expanding their businesses. The study was exploratory and quantitative in nature. Questionnaires and interviews were used to gather data. The questionnaires were distributed personally and with the help of a research assistant to the business sites of the respondents. The respondents comprise 120 FMCG SMME manufacturers in KZN, who were selected by means of a non-probability sampling method. The results obtained identified a number of factors influencing innovation for FMCG SMME manufacturers to achieve growth. The influencing factors include a lack of financial skill and knowledge; high cost or complex procedures to register or defend patents; a lack of information on the part of employers on how to satisfy consumers’ interest; a lack of technological know-how and human capital problems; difficulty in accessing finance for research and development; government laws and regulations; new entrant threats and protocols; and a lack of product brand name. / M

Designens hållbarhetskraft : En kvalitativ studie om design och hållbarhet inom produktutveckling av dagligvaror / Design your way to sustainability : A qualitative study about design and sustainability within the product development of Fast Moving Consumer Goods

Carlsson, Priscilla, Nikkhooye Panahi, Sandra January 2019 (has links)
Sustainability is increasingly valued by consumers and more companies are expanding the incorporation of sustainability in their work. This means companies should develop the incorporation of sustainability in their work to stay or become competitive on the market. The consuming of groceries accounts for 25 % of the households climate influence. Within the fast moving consumer goods industry there is therefore a potential of improvement. To develop the incorporation of sustainability in a company requires innovative solutions. Design as a process has been able to contribute with exactly this. Although, studies have shown that even though companies value design highly it is not implemented to the same extent. The potential that design possesses is therefore at risk of being lost by the actors of the market. The thesis intends to explore which factors that are important for design to be implemented to develop sustainable products in the fast moving consumer goods industry. The study is a multiple case study with a qualitative approach. Three interviews have beenmade with european companies that are active on the swedish fast moving consumer goodsindustry market. The study showed that it is of importance for a company to be permeated by sustainability andto have a high understanding of design. Furthermore, it is of importance that design as well assustainability is implemented in the beginning of the product development process that is also known as Front-End.

Socially Desirable Fast Moving Consumer Goods - A Literature Review on How To Decrease the Gap Between Intention & Purchase Behavior Through Marketing

Forsberg, Mikael, Löfvenberg, Sara-Maria January 2011 (has links)
Abstract Authors: Mikael Forsberg and Sara-Maria Löfvenberg Tutor: Susanne Åberg Title: Socially Desirable Fast Moving Consumer Goods – A Literature Review on How To Decrease the Gap Between Intention & Purchase Behavior Through Marketing Keywords Branding, Consumer Behavior, Consumer Value Creation, Decision-making, Differentiation, Eco, Ecological, Environmentally Conscious Behavior, Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), Green Consumer, Green Marketing, In-store marketing, Marketing, Organic, Purchase decision, Socially Desirable, Value Creation. Background and Problem Consumers today are more environmentally conscious than ever. However, it has been found that there is a gap between the consumer’s intention and actual purchase when it comes to products that there is a social pressure to buy for environmental reasons. The potential for the socially desirable segment is estimated to have potential, but growth seems to be slow. It has been stated that until now, there is not enough research done that take a holistic perspective including several fields of marketing. There is a need to review and combine existing literature in various fields of marketing to investigate how the gap can be decreased and sales increased. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to review and combine existing literature in the fields of consumer value creation, decision-making and in-store marketing. By doing so the authors of this thesis aim to present a theoretical model on how producers of socially desirable FMCG can decrease the gap between the consumers’ intention and actual purchase through marketing. Decreasing the gap refers to more fully exploit the potential size of the segment and generate more sales.   Method A completely theoretical method was chosen for this thesis. To the authors’ knowledge there has not been done enough specific research to match the purpose of this thesis. A literature review has therefore been conducted within three separate fields of marketing to get a broader understanding of how the gap between intention and actual purchase can be decreased. Based on the extensive literature review, the authors developed ten propositions that formed a model that can be used as the backbone for future theoretical and empirical research.   Final Discussion Some highlights of the theoretical discussions earlier in this thesis are presented in the final discussion. The authors suggest that purchase decisions of socially desirable FMCG initially are high-involvement decisions that often are formed outside the in-store-setting. This suggests that more long-term marketing efforts such as brand building in some cases can be more important than in-store marketing when it comes to FMCG that are socially desirable. Symbolic values should be highlighted in branding of socially desirable FMCG because the instrumental differences between FMCG and socially desirable FMCG is limited. It is therefore likely that it is more efficient to focus on consumers’ self-identity to convince them to purchase socially desirable FMCG. It is also important that producers of socially desirable FMCG provide consumers with clear product information in-store and that the products are easy to find. Based on the extensive literature review, the authors have developed eight propositions that form the model presented in this chapter.

The Effect of Corporations’ Irresponsible Actions on Young Consumers’ Purchasing Behavior in the FMCG Apparel Industry

Söderholm, Linda, Olofsson, Jenny January 2014 (has links)
Background and Problem: CSI is a topic with a limited amount of research despite it being a very relevant issue and that its counter pole CSR is one of today’s most popular subjects to study. In both areas there is a gap in the literature regarding the apparel industry where there CSI can be evident in many different aspects, especially in the production process. In the FMCG market, the demand for apparel that has been produced ethically has increased over the years. Still, the importance that the consumers place on ethical attributes in their purchase decisions is rather unknown. Purpose: The study's purpose is to investigate the young consumers’ emotions towards FMCG apparel corporations in order to see if CSI actions give them a negative attitude. It will further be explored to see if the attitude towards the corporations reflects in their intentional purchase behavior and their actual behavior. This will provide insight to the young consumers’ knowledge and interest for CSI, aiding corporations in their quest for excellence when it comes to consumer relationships. Method: This research is done through a deductive, qualitative research. A literature review is done to create a great understanding to the concepts of CSI, consumer attitudes and planned behavior. Four focus groups are conducted as a base for the empirical findings. Further, these two chapters are compared in an analysis to get an understanding about the young consumers’ attitudes towards corporations acting unethically and the affects it may have on their planned behavior. Conclusion: Based on the analysis, the study found clear evidence that the participants have a negative attitude towards corporations’ CSI activities. However, these attitudes did not, as theory suggests, have any effect on the participants’ intended and actual purchasing behavior. Instead it is shown that young consumers base their decisions on contextual factors, where the most significant one is price.

Enman, Fredrik, Pers, Sebastian January 2017 (has links)
Introduction: A classic distribution chain consists of a raw material supplier, manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer and consumer. In this chain it's usually the manufacturers that delivers the branded product which ends up in the store shelf. This market has in recent times had a great change in the form of the retailers own brands (PL). These products are made to be similar to the market leader, and they are often placed right next to them on the store shelf. As a rule they have a slightly lower price but the similar quality. These products have risen in popularity and they are expected to rise even more. The retailers however do not manufacture their own products - that is the manufacturer's job. Considering the market is completely mature, this implicates that whenever a new product enters, it does this on the cost of someone else. This study wants to examine how the manufacturers work to keep their place in the distribution chain. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the manufacturer's opportunities, risks and strategic possibilities regarding their place in the distribution chain. Methodology: This is a qualitative study from the suppliers perspective. The data is collected through semi-structured interviews with key personalities from within the organizations who are engaged with private label production. Conclusions: EMV offer the manufacturers many possibilities for growth and strength, but at the cost of lower margins. PL challenges the classic view of the distribution chain and strategies of competition.

Understanding Affluence through the Lens of Technology: An Ethnographic Study toward Building an Anthropology Practice in Advertising

Garcia, Steven R. 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis describes a pilot study for a new cultural anthropology initiative at Team One, a US-based premium and luxury brand advertising agency. In this study, I explore the role and meaning of technology among a population of affluent individuals in Southern California through diaries and ethnographic interviews conducted in their homes. Using schema theory and design anthropology to inform my theoretical approach, I discuss socioeconomic and cultural factors that shape these participants' notions of affluence and influence their presentation of self through an examination of their technology and proudest possessions. I put forward a theory of conspicuous achievement as a way to describe how the affluent use technology to espouse a merit-based model of affluence. Through this model of affluence, participants strive to align themselves to the virtuous middle-class while ascribing moral value to their consumption practices. Lastly, I provide a typology of meaningful technology artifacts in the affluent home that describes the roles of their most used tech devices and how each type supports conspicuous achievement.

[pt] ETAPAS DE GLOBAL ROLL-UP & GLOBAL EXECUTIVE MEETING DO PLANEJAMENTO DE VENDAS E OPERAÇÕES E O PAPEL DAS FINANÇAS NO PROCESSO: UM ESTUDO MULTICASO NAS SUBSIDIÁRIAS LATINO-AMERICANAS DE CORPORAÇÕES MULTINACIONAIS / [en] SALES AND OPERATIONS PLANNING GLOBAL ROLL-UP & GLOBAL EXECUTIVE MEETING STEPS AND THE ROLE OF FINANCE IN THE PROCESS: A MULTI-CASE STUDY IN THE LATIN AMERICAN SUBSIDIARIES OF MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS

MARCELO XAVIER SEELING 20 May 2022 (has links)
[en] The thesis investigates the sales and operations planning (S&OP) cycle steps, expanding the understanding about the under-researched Global Roll-up and Global Executive Meeting steps. It presents a multiple case study embracing five important Latin American subsidiaries of four multinational corporations. Two S&OP frameworks are used to guide the field observations and analysis, aiding to improve the S&OP phenomenon s characterization. Scholars and practitioners can gain first-hand knowledge about how Global Roll-up and Global Executive Meeting steps are conducted in multinational corporations to improve their planning processes. The role of finance in S&OP / Integrated Business Planning (IBP) cycles is also examined and discussed in detail providing useful insights to improve these processes in other organizations, addressing another research gap. Findings indicate that there are challenges to consolidate and use information gathered from multiple subsidiaries in different contexts worldwide but internal benchmarking and sharing of best practices are explored as well as business opportunities among countries regarding inventory excess, portfolio expansion possibilities, and spare capacity utilization. Additionally, observations led to the conclusion that early involvement of finance in the S&OP cycle is beneficial for the business, adding value to the decision making process in the initial steps and taking a central role in the Pre-meeting and Executive Meeting steps.

Household product refills as a solution to single-use packaging: Developing The Theory of Retailer Care

Bartek, Connor, Rumbolt, Alexandra January 2022 (has links)
This research seeks to explore and understand retailers’ perspectives, realities, and actions regarding refill systems for household products. The reader can ponder not an answer to a question but rather grasp a deeper understanding of the retailers’ role within refill systems, as well as the feasibility of reducing single-use packaging for household products with a goal to reduce waste. Through conducted interviews with retailers, the following categories surrounding refill systems emerged and were explored: drivers, barriers, attitudes, current practices, and future practices. Utilising the Grounded Theory Method, the analysis of the data led to the development of The Theory of Retailer Care. This theory presents that through caring, retailers can drive vertical and horizontal change, along with pressuring and influencing behaviours of consumers and manufactures which in turn support the retailer’s business model.

Got Silk?: Buying, Selling, and Advertising British Luxury Imports During the Stamp Act Crisis

Busse, Michele Conrady 08 1900 (has links)
Despite the amount of scholarship on the Stamp Act Crisis, no study has used advertisements as a main source. This study attempts to show that a valuable, objective source has been overlooked, through the quantitative analysis of 5,810 advertisements before, during and after the Stamp Act Crisis from five port cities: Boston, Charleston, Philadelphia, New York, and Portsmouth. The findings reveal the colonists' strong connection to imported British luxury goods, and a lack of interest in American-made goods, especially before and after the boycott. Advertisements also demonstrate that the decision of many merchants to place the needs and expectations of their community before their own personal gain offered a rare economic opportunity for others. The colonists' devotion to imports tested the strength of the boycott, especially among Boston merchants, who continued to advertise imported goods a good deal more than any other city. This lack of dedication to the boycott on the part of the Boston merchants shows disunity among the colonies, at a time when many argue was the first instance of colonial nationalism. Capitalism challenged and undermined a commitment to communal sentiments such as nationalism. Moreover, if Americans did share a sense of nationhood during the Stamp Act Crisis, it cannot be gauged by a rejection of "Englishness."

Análise da prática do design na micro e pequena indústria no setor moveleiro do Estado de São Paulo: contexto, estratégia e competitividade nas empresas que possuem a cultura do design / The practice of design in Micro and Small Industries in furniture industries in the State of São Paulo: context, strategy and competitiveness in companies with design culture

Avendaño, Luis Emiliano Costa 26 April 2017 (has links)
In recent years, there has been great interest in design innovation and contribution to the business; however, this business vision, focusing on design, is not yet fully in line with the industry strategy. This thesis aims to examine not only the design culture in the Micro and Small Industry, taking as an example the furniture sector in the State of São Paulo, but also within the strategic context and business. These factors interfere with and help decide the success or failure of an integration design tool and its management. In this sense, the aspects studied are design as a differential business, the organizational structure of Micro and Small Industries, Design Management as a system integrator skill, customers, and how all this structure develops the design features in the organization to finally propose a theoretical model that can indicate strategic solutions for integrating design within the business vision. The thesis begins by proposing that design and management can leverage the industry towards its strategic vision, not only innovating developed concepts, its own design culture, but integrating factor strategies in design and marketing as well. The study shows that Design Management and the Theoretical Model proposed herein can be an important component to implement competitive solutions and integrated with other strategic organizational tools.
