The objective of this study is to present a critical translation of some short histories from the book Contes cruels (1883) by Villiers de l’Isle-Adam (1838-1889). The texts chosen are divided into two groups: the first is composed by the short histories “Véra”, “L’Intersigne” and “Souvenirs occultes”, translated into Portuguese in two editions (VILLIERS DE L’ISLE_ADAM, 1971, 1987) and whose analyses were developed in the Master Dissertation – “O universo simbólico em Contes cruels de Villiers de l’Isle-Adam” (DOMINGOS, 2004); the second group was chosen considering one of the specific objectives in this thesis, that is, the translation of some short stories that had never been translated into Portuguese: “Vox Populi”, “Fleurs de ténèbres”, “La Machine à Gloire”, “Sentimentalisme”, “A s’y méprendre” and “L’Inconnue”. In this research, the analyses pointed to ways of reflecting about the translation process which involves specific, discursive, poetic narrative procedures used by the author. It was possible to highlight some stylistic procedures found in Villiers’ discourse, which are extremely productive and are especially concerned with the condensed characteristic of the short story, its poetic prose and irony. It was very important to characterize those procedures because this study, devoted to the translation of a poetic literary text, is based on the assumptions of the translation theory and criticism, as well as on the literary criticism. These studies show differences between the act of translating and that of interpreting, and the translator should find adequate forms of translation as a way to fulfill the criterion that involves the production of the same effect, found in the departure text, in the target text. In general, the proposed critical edition is intended to present illuminating notes about... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Aswaq al-Aswaq min masari' al-ussaq d'Ibrahim al biqa'- I (m.885/1480) : édition critique et commentaire / Aswaq al-Aswaq min masari' al-ussaq, Ibrahim al biqa'- I (m.885/1480) : critical edition and commentary

Baratli, Youssef 18 October 2014 (has links)
Love-passion and lovers stories, which the fate spares or whom it persecutes, are themes which touched all the societies, and seem to cross the centuries without aging. Certain legends were orally reported, may be even sung at the begenning, then thanks to the writing and the rewriting, we can read them today. But we tend to favor certain anecdotes, certain poets or authors of the first ones centuries of the Islam. The authors of the later centuries do not seem to have been studied enough at least for this theme of love.It is the case of our author Ibrāhīm al-Biqāʿī ( d.885 H/ 1440 J-C) whom the work is impressive, more than ninety titles. He is especially known for its productions concerning the exegesis and the hadith. His literary side remains unknown or almost. Our research concerns the critical edition and the comment of one of its manuscripts title : Aswāq al-Ašwāq min Maṣāriʿ al-ʿUššāq, which I translate : «Markets of the desires and the demise of the lovers».

Presentation of his philosophical works. Critical edition and translation of the first two examinations (bahth-s) of the Book of Logic (al-Mantiq)

Morel, Teymour 09 June 2018 (has links)
Born in Tūlā (Lebanon), the Maronite clergyman Buṭrus al-Tūlāwī (1657-1746) was a pupil at the Maronite College of Rome, where he followed the whole scholastic curriculum taught by Jesuit fathers. After his return to the East, he left for Aleppo to serve his Church and there he composed an important series of philosophical and theological works. To be sure, he is well known among historians for his role in the history of the Maronite Church and for the place his writings occupied in the religious and intellectual spheres in the Near-East. Nevertheless, his philosophical works have not been the object of much research so far and were never critically edited. In this dissertation, we offer a critical edition accompanied by a commented French translation of the two first examinations (baḥṯ-s) of the Book of Logic (al-Manṭiq), taught in 1693 onward. That part is preceded by a detailed inventory of the 153 witnesses of al-Tūlāwī’s philosophical texts, Logic included, the results of which constitute the starting point for a reflection on the circulation of this corpus. In the following chapter, we proceed to the stemmatic analysis of the 24 witnesses of the Logic to which we could have access out of the 29 listed, in order to underline the existence of three distinct versions in which this text circulated, and which are of paramount importance for the principles of our edition, which is synoptic, and for the eliminatio codicum. The doctrinal references used by al-Tūlāwī in his treatises are varied and numerous. We present and reference, in the following chapter, all the quotations which are, in the Logic, taken from two major figures of philosophy: John Damascene and Avicenna.

Dvě rýmovaná officia, složená pro svátek Navštívení Panny Marie: srovnávací studie a kritická edice / Two rhymed offices composed for the feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary: comparative study and critical edition

Hallas, Kathryn Rhianydd January 2021 (has links)
The feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was one of the last medieval Marian feasts to be introduced into the Roman Calendar, and is unusual in the wealth of contemporary, and near contemporary, documentation available for study in relation to its introduction. The offices written by Jan of Jenštejn [1347-1400] and Adam Easton [1330-1397] for the feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary have never been the subject of detailed examination or comparison, nor have critical editions of these offices been produced. This thesis addresses both these gaps in scholarship and presents an analysis and comparison of the texts, melodies, and dissemination of the offices. Using contemporary evidence and secondary sources the reasons for the institution of the new feast, the motivations of both Jenštejn and Easton, their compositional styles including choice of texts and melodies, and the introduction process itself are examined within the wider context of contemporary Marian devotion and fourteenth- century textual and musical composition. Chapter One provides a contextual background to the celebration of the Visitation, from its inclusion in the Gospel of Luke and apocryphal sources to contemporary sermons, showing the importance of the Visitation in the West long before the new feast's introduction....

A critical edition of the Athis und Prophilias fragments with introduction, commentary, rhyme- and word-lists

Bartlett, William Jonathan Osborne January 1985 (has links)
The introduction contains separate studies of the manuscripts, their orthographies, the rhymes, metre and treatment of source material. Both the orthographic studies and the rhyme—grammar reveal Athis to be a CG poem with no real evidence of Rhenish provenance. The metrical studies, dealing with vowel collision and units of one and three syllables, show how the <u>Athis</u> poet pursued various legitimate rhythmic options in his attempt to introduce variation to the tedium of regular alternation. The most positive results emerge from the comparison of <u>Athis</u> with its OF source, the <u>Roman d'Athis</u>. The dependence of the German text on the OF poem can be proved through misunderstandings of lines and part—lines of the <u>Rd'A</u> enshrined in proper names in the German text. By far the most important aspect of the German poet's adaptation is his sense of history. Ancient Rome and Athens are presented in an entirely different way in the German text. In particular, the large scale descriptions of ceremonies and major events are scenically developed under the influence of medieval historiographic ideas. Further supplementary source material is provided by a Pseudo—Ovidian treatment of <u>Pyramus and Thisbe</u> and a number of medieval military and judicial customs associated with Roman models. In general <u>Athis</u> is shown to be indebted to a medieval German self—awareness of <u>Romanitas</u>.

Aquinas' Commentary on Sentences I, dist. 35. : A Doctrinal Investigation and a Critical Edition

Gibiino, Fabio 14 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation provides a doctrinal and philological study of Aquinas' Commentary on Book I, dist. 35 ofPeter Lombard's Sentences. At issue is the knowledge that God has of Himself and of the things other thanHimself. The first part of the dissertation investigates the conceptual and historical background of dist. 35. Itdivides into four sections. First, we approach the topic of the divine science from a linguistic perspective.Secondly, we examine the role of things other than God as objects of the divine knowledge. Thirdly, we drawattention to Aquinas' synthesis of Aristotelian and pseudo-Dionysian elements, namely the notions of actuspurus and esse. The fourth section provides an overview of the historical context and the XIIIth-centuryUniversity of Paris, in order to better understand the method of commentaries on the Sentences. The secondpart of the dissertation intends to provide, for the first time, the critical edition of Aquinas' Commentary onBook I, dist. 35 of Peter Lombard's Sentences. The manuscripts are collated according to LeonineCommission's criteria. The critical text is introduced by a philological study in which we investigate the textualtransmission of dist. 35 and we propose a stemma.

Les "riches inventions" d'un roman alchimique : édition commentée de l'Histoire véritable ou Le Voyage des princes fortunez de François Béroale de Verville (1610) / The "riches inventions" of an alchimical novel : critical edition of L'Histoire veritable ou le Voyage des princes fortunez by François Béroale de Verville (1610)

Bontemps, Laetitia 01 December 2018 (has links)
Described as an « oeuvre steganographique » by its author, L’Histoire veritable ou Le Voyage des princes fortunez (1610) opens the way to alchemical novel in France, by reactivating the literary model of Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, « alchemized » by Nazari and Gohory before being edited by Beroalde de Verville (1556-1626), in 1600. Left in the dark for a long time, it was rediscovered by E. Vordemann (1933) who identified its main source, an Italian translation of Eastern tales, Peregrinaggio di tre figliuoli del re di Serendippo, by Cristoforo Armeno (1557). Enlightened by the essays on Beroalde, which followed the pioneering study by V.-L. Saulnier, our thesis provides a critical edition that reveals many sources, its genesis’ context and its literary models. The study shows how the fictional motif of alchemy deals with the scientific or bawdy conception of this art in the work of Beroalde, a polygraph writer and an alchemist doctor, and also how it renews the novelistic way of writing by stimulating a « juste curiosité » with its games. At last, it compares two texts by Beroalde, considered more political, his poem L’Idée de la république (1584), and his anonymous discourse, De la guerre (1589).

: Critical edition, Italian translation, and a study of authorial variants (1566-1572) / La “Methodus ad facilem historiarum cognitionem” de Jean Bodin : édition critique, traduction italienne et étude des variantes (1566-1572)

Miglietti, Sara Olivia 29 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation consists of a critical edition, Italian translation and introductory essay to Jean Bodin's Methodus ad facilem historiarum cognitionem. Jean Bodin (1530-1596) is best known as the author of the Six livres de la République (1576), a true masterpiece of sixteenth-century political thought. First published in Paris in 1566, the Methodus was then reworked, revised and augmented by Bodin, and printed again by the same editor in 1572. The Methodus belongs to a crucial and fascinanting period of Bodin's thought, which was then still largely evolving. The République is still a long way to come, and yet one can already spot in the Methodus a few hints of Bodin's ongoing journey from constitutionnalism (basically, the idea of a monarchy limited by a range of checks and balances) to absolute sovereignty – a concept that Bodin formulates for the first time in 1576, and that represents a crucial step in modern political theory. This edition results from systematic comparisons between the first two French editions (1566, 1572), the only ones directly supervised by the author himself. All of the variants and additions which Bodin made in view of the second edition of 1572 have been carefully identified, shown in the critical apparatus, and thoroughly discussed. Thanks to this fresh textual material, it will now be possible to study the evolution of Bodin's thought more closely across this crucial decade, 1566-1576; it will also be possible to recontextualise Bodin's political ideas, to formulate new hypothesis concerning their genesis, and hopefully to better grasp differences and analogies between the Methodus and the République. In the introductory essay, a few points are made to argue in favour of the internal unity of the Methodus and its relative autonomy vis-à-vis the République. Then, using abundant evidence yielded by the variants and additions of 1572, it is argued that, contrarily to what many believe, there was nothing like an “absolutist turn” in Bodin's thought, and that Bodin's drifting away from constitutionnalism towards “absolute sovereignty” should not be too rigidly connected with St Bartholomew's massacre and with the consequent polemics against the monarchomaques. As far as Bodin is concerned, indeed, his intellectual evolution had taken an anti-constitutionnalist direction well before August 1572, for reasons which seem to owe less to the political context of 1570's France, than to a concern for conceptual exactness and consistency which is in fact quite typical of this author.

Machado de Assis: uma edição crítica de \"O Alienista\" com ensaio introdutório: \"O Alienista, ou do Objeto Inapreensível\" / Machado de Assis: a critical edition of \"O Alienista\" with an introductory essay: \"O Alienista, ou do Objeto Inapreensível\"

Franca, Sandra Mára da Silva 19 August 2013 (has links)
The main objective of this study is a textual criticism of the short story O Alienista [The Psychiatrist], by Machado de Assis. The analysis consists of a comparison between the text published in the magazine A Estação between October 1881 and March 1882, and the one published in the book Papéis Avulsos, in November 1882. Accordingly, alterations made by the author as he transferred the text from pamphlet to book form are recorded and the passages involved are subsequently commented. Subsequently, by examining the style of the story and the idiosyncrasies of its narrator and, above all, the concept of science as it is outlined, the analysis attempts to show that 1) the story fits into the category of works that illustrate the relationship between real facts and imagined facts, as defined by Antônio Candido in his essay Esquema de Machado de Assis; 2) that the concept of science at the time, of which Bacamarte is the incarnation, and especially scientific observation and enunciation with objective pretensions, are targets of criticism by Machado de Assis through verbal strategies employed by the narrator, which transmit the idea of an elusive reality, or, as Anatol Rosenfeld called it, an unexplained world, an aesthetic effect that in my opinion constitutes the crux of some of Assiss later works, such as Missa do Galo or Dom Casmurro; 3) that the narrative focus of O Alienista is its style, characterized by ambiguities and by a continual affirmation and denial of facts, materializing the continuous movement, always beyond the observation of Bacamarte, or the evolution of his own theories about madness and normality that makes the concept of observation the conducting motive of the work, and which makes this a short story rather than a novella; 4) that, curiously, the work presents conceptual nexuses with the so-called relativist sciences at the turn of the 19th Century, among them, especially, The Philosophy of As if, developed by the German thinker Hans Vaihinger, regardless of whether Machado de Assis had had contact with these sciences or not; and 5) for this reason the short story can be considered the pioneer of a huge body of work that followed it, characterized by having science as its central theme.

Diccionario das antiguidades de Portugal: história e edição crítica de um manuscrito (séculos XVIII e XIX) / Diccionario das Antiguidades de Portugal: history and critical edition of a manuscript (XVIII and XIX centuries)

Paula, Daniel Carvalho de 14 December 2015 (has links)
Our work consists in the production of a critical edition and the investigation of the history, composition, and transmission of the unpublished Diccionario das Antiguidades de Portugal (Dictionary of Antiquities of Portugal). Initially, our work was focused on a single manuscript, a copy from the 19th century, deposited in the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute (IHGB). The analysis of the bibliographic references pertaining to each entry of the dictionary and the writing system convinced us that the original work was written in the 18th century. The study of this copy led us to find the original manuscript located in the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, under the authorship of Pedro José da Fonseca (1737-1816), who was professor at the College of Nobles, founding member and director of typography in the Academy, founded in 1779. Manoel José Maria da Costa e Sá, Higher Official at the Secretary for the Navy and Overseas Affairs, is the man who we understand to be the author of the manuscript copy belonging to the IHGB; his trajectory is quite unclear and we were able to shed some light upon it. We have also approached the participation in the story of Counselor Antônio Menezes Vasconcellos de Drummond; he brought to the IHGB the copy made by his friend Costa e Sá. A transatlantic network involving Portuguese and Brazilian men of letters becomes clear through this study, rendering it patent that the Diccionario das Antiguidades de Portugal is a steadfast window throughout which we can very well gaze upon the history of Literate Culture in the 18th and 19th centuries.
