Jämställdhet i bolagsstyrelser : En kvantitativ studie av jämställda bolagsstyrelsers koppling till finansiell prestation / Gender equal boards : A quantitative study of gender equal boards relation to financial performance

Wasserman, Olle, Andersson Hylén, Olle, Brdar, Mihret January 2019 (has links)
Background: The debate on gender equality is a topical subject in Sweden as well as the rest of the world. A gender quota law was proposed for Swedish listed companies but was outvoted. Is there a connection between gender equal companies and financial performance? Purpose: The main purpose of this study aims to investigate if companies with gender equal boards financially outperforms companies who does not have a gender equal board. Method: The thesis is based on a quantitative method along with a deductive approach in order to collect secondary data. Multiple regression analysis was performed in order to test the results against Critical Mass Theory, Resource Dependence Theory and previous research findings. Conclusion: The results of the study conclude that there is a significant positive relationship between gender equal boards and a higher market value. Furthermore, our findings show no significant relationship between gender equal boards and profitability.

Kvinnor i styrelser – endast för symbolik : Könsmångfaldens påverkan på företagets CSR-ranking, en kritiskt diskuterande studie / The impact of gender diversity on the company's CSR-ranking, a critical discussion study

Virtanen, Linnéa, Karlsson, Elin January 2023 (has links)
The reason that this study was conducted is to study whether Swedish listed companies with greater representation of women on the board have a higher CSR-ranking. The study has applied a quantitative investigation with a deductive approach since it is based on previous research and theories. The Critical Mass theory´s critical mass has been used as a breaking point, which states that a board that is composed of three or 30 precent women has a greater work with sustainability-based activities. Through statistical calculations in the form of independent t-test, differences have been investigated between two types of companies; those who fulfill the theory of the critical mass versus those who do not fulfill the critical mass. The result that the study has accomplished is that there is statistically significant difference between the groups of companies. Furthermore, the results of the study show that it is possible to claim covariation between the presence of female board directors and increased CSR-ranking. Other statistical research that has been conducted are of descriptive nature which aims to answer how Swedish listed companies’ boards are composed and how high the presence of women is. The descriptive statistics also show the average CSR-ranking of Swedish listed companies.

An Evaluation of the Techniques and Strategies for Recruiting African-Americans by 1862 Land-Grant Universities

Franklin, Rashawn P. 01 January 2016 (has links)
As post-secondary education becomes more important for the American citizen to generate wealth, universities are struggling to retain and graduate African-Americans, the third-most represented demographic in the country, especially at predominately white colleges and universities. The Colleges of Agriculture at these particular institutions are struggling to even get Black students to apply, let alone graduate. One of the major issues is the disconnect between the African-American community and the idea of post-secondary education in the agricultural field. One way that disconnect can be combatted is new techniques and strategies in recruiting African-Americans. This study identifies three themes based on interviews with recruiters from universities throughout the country, as to why universities are struggling to effectively recruit Black students into programs. The results indicate that there is a lack of resources present and offered in recruiting said student, a perceived misconception of African-American’s views of agriculture and a major disconnect with the African-American community and colleges of agriculture. In order to combat and ultimately fix this issues, these three themes must be addressed.

A Critical Evaluation Of Housing Co-operatives In Turkey Within The Framework Of Collective Action Theories: A Case Study In Ankara And Istanbul.

Ozkan, Alper 01 June 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Co-operatives and housing co-operatives as main consideration of the dissertation are historically and philosophically developed institutions. Co-operative culture, although emerged in Britain during early phases of the industrial revolution, has been adapted by other countries within socialist, social democratic and even communist systems. In the contemporary era, housing co-operatives are still in existence and contribute housing production all over the world in every economic and political system. Institutional development of housing co-operatives in Turkey can be regarded as a process of adapting a Western institution and it shows how contextual differences result in changes in terms of ideology and implementation. In this respect, the thesis aims to evaluate Turkish housing co-operatives by putting forward their contextual differences. Housing co-operatives are non-governmental organizations and produce considerable amount of housing in Turkey. The dissertation regards housing co-operatives as a kind of collective action and discusses underlying factors of success of them with respect to collective action theories. Free riding, group size, critical mass, heterogeneity, network density and selective incentives are the factors obtained from the Theory of Free Rider and the Theory of Critical Mass and discussed regarding the Turkish co-operative development case to be tested via &ldquo / The Housing Co-operatives Interview Survey&rdquo / in istanbul and Ankara. The thesis&rsquo / findings provide that despite there might be expected effects of factors on success of housing co-operatives, these factors might be different due to the fact that they depends on desires of the critical mass / whether to act in favor of collective or individual benefits.

A Threshold Coverage Flow-Refueling Location Model to Build a Critical Mass of Alternative-Fuel Stations

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: In order to address concerns about the dominance of petroleum-fueled vehicles, the transition to alternative-fueled counterparts is urgently needed. Top barriers preventing the widespread diffusion of alternative-fuel vehicles (AFV) are the limited range and the scarcity of refueling or recharging infrastructures in convenient locations. Researchers have been developing models for optimally locating refueling facilities for range-limited vehicles, and recently a strategy has emerged to cluster refueling stations to encourage consumers to purchase alternative-fuel vehicles by building a critical mass of stations. However, clustering approaches have not yet been developed based on flow-based demand. This study proposes a Threshold Coverage extension to the original Flow Refueling Location Model (FRLM). The new model optimally locates p refueling stations on a network so as to maximize the weighted number of origin zones whose refuelable outbound round trips exceed a given threshold, thus to build critical mass based on flow-based demand on the network. Unlike other clustering approaches, this model can explicitly ensure that flow demands “covered” in the model are refuelable considering the limited driving range of AFVs. Despite not explicitly including local intra-zonal trips, numerical experiments on a statewide highway network proved the effectiveness of the model in clustering stations based on inter-city flow volumes on the network. The model’s policy implementation will provide managerial insights for some key concerns of the industry, such as geographic equity vs. critical mass, from a new perspective. This project will serve as a step to support a more successful public transition to alternative-fuel vehicles. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Geography 2015

Gender diversity and corporate sustainability disclosures in Swedish listed companies : A quantitative study examining female representation on boards and in the CEO role and their effects on corporate sustainability disclosures

Al-Ramahi, Fatima, Alkhatib, Ehsan January 2021 (has links)
This study investigates the relationship between female representation, women as chief executive officers, and corporate sustainability disclosures in Swedish listed companies. The used data was collected from the Swedish listed companies in Nasdaq Stockholm for the period 2017-2020. The specific research period is due to the new amendments of the Swedish Annual Accounts Act (Årsredovisningslagen) which came into force 2017. To investigate the effect female representation, and women as chief executive officers have on the legally issued corporate sustainability disclosures, this study applies content analysis and quantitative methods. By estimating multiple regression models, the results revealed a non-significant relationship of female representation on the board of directors and of women as chief executive officers, on the quality of corporate sustainability disclosures. For the critical mass of at least three women, a non-significant impact is detected. Lastly, an additional test for reversed causality has been conducted, however no significant relationship was documented.

Female Leaders During Crisis : A study about the impact of female board directors on firms’ financial performance during the COVID-19 pandemic

Willhans, Lisa, Kossmann Lindström, Linnea January 2022 (has links)
This study aims to investigate how the proportion of female leaders on corporate boards affects firm financial performance during crises. The study investigates Swedish mid-cap and large- cap companies during COVID-19. The years observed are 2018-2021, where the two first years served as the pre-crisis periods, while the two latter as the crisis period. The sample includes 266 companies listed at Nasdaq Stockholm. Regression analysis is performed to investigate if there is a more positive relationship between the proportion of women on corporate boards and firm financial performance during a crisis. The firm financial performance measurements used are return on equity, return on assets, operating margin and Tobin’s Q. Moreover, in accordance with critical mass theory, the study examines if there is a significant relationship between a proportion of at least 40 % women on the board of directors, and financial performance during a crisis. The results of the study show no significant results for either a stronger relationship between the proportion of women and firm financial performance during a crisis or a threshold of 40 % proportion of women on the board. The study contributes to the current literature by expanding the research on gender and crisis management on a corporate level as well as explores the relationship between female board directors and firm financial performance in the Swedish market which has not been executed previously.

Jonsson, Josephine, Lund, Josefin January 2019 (has links)
ABSTRACT Title: Do women's risk aversion have any effect on earnings quality and audit fees? Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Josephine Jonsson and Josefin Lund Supervisor: Jan Svanberg Date: 2019 – june Aim: Due to the positive qualities women are considered to add to the boardroom and the countries' quota requirements for the proportion of women on boards, it is of great importance to examine the possible effect of an increased number of women on boards. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a connection between external audit fees and the proportion of women on the board. A second purpose is to investigate whether a higher/lower audit fees associated with women on the board is related to higher earnings quality. Method: The study adopts a hypothetical-deductive approach with a positivistic perspective. Quantitative secondary data has been obtained from the Thomson Reuters Eikon. A longitudinal study has been designed and the selection has finally been analyzed in multiple regression analysis using the statistics program IBM SPSS. Result & Conclusions: The study's literature review gave reason to expect a connection between the proportion of women on the board and the companies' earnings management and audit fees explained by women's risk aversion. The study measures the companies' earnings quality with earnings management in order to seek answers to whether the audit fee can be explained by the earnings quality. The result shows no correlation and the study can thus not explain the companies' audit fees with women's tendency to act risk averse. Contribution of the thesis: From a theoretical perspective, the study contributes to business research through an increased understanding of the view of the female leader, as this study seeks out explanations other than risk aversion to the connection between audit fees and the female leader. The study's practical contribution is about clarifying the effect of appointing more women on boards, and the study provides valuable information to the companies' stakeholders due to the quota requirements of women on boards in certain countries. Suggestions for future research: Since the results in the study do not fall in line with previous research, future research should take an open perspective on whether women should be assumed to be risk averse. There may be many other explanations for the effects of women on leading positions. These effects should be investigated. It is also interesting to investigate how the quota of women in leading positions affects the companies' profitability, if the woman is hired because of her gender and not her experience and competence.

Cicloativismo paulistano: uma investigação jurídico-fenomenológica / Bicycle activism in São Paulo: a legal and phenomenological research

Züge Junior, Odir 15 April 2015 (has links)
The present thesis describes a social movement that advocates the adoption of public policies in order to promote the use of bicycles as a means of transport in the city of São Paulo. Three associations and numerous informal collectives has been formed, and after a public pressure phase through several forms of protests (ranging from critical masses and / or bike rides, illegal traffic signaling) and making use of speeches founded in the law, it could then establish channels of communication with the government and has obtained the implementation of cycling structure in the city. Yet the Bicycle Activism in São Paulo remains vivid for not understanding it has achieved its goals, so it continues to press the government authorities in different ways with the argument to fight for a dignified life.

Understanding Effectiveness of a Diverse Board in the Nonprofit Sector: The Role of Board Inclusion & Critical Mass of the Diverse Board Members

Dutta, Suparna 01 January 2019 (has links)
Using rated responses from nonprofit CEOs who participated in the 2016 BoardSource national survey, this study investigates whether nonprofit board inclusive behavior or board inclusive practices are positively correlated with nonprofit board effectiveness. It further examines whether a critical mass of racial and ethnic minority or women board members may moderate the relationship stated above. To answer these questions, the study tested six hypotheses using principal component analysis, followed by hierarchical regression analysis, and found no evidence of statistical significance in main or moderator effects. The study recommends that policymakers should frame policies that ensure mandatory quotas for women and racioethnic minority board members for nonprofits that receive government funding and/or act as alternative service delivery agents for governments. In addition, the nonprofit CEOs should promote the learning-integration perspective of group inclusion to help maximize the experience of inclusion of board members. The study further recommends that nonprofit boards should promote pluralistic diversity, abandon tokenism, and foster an inclusive environment for all board members irrespective of their gender and color.
