O comportamento de cuidado entre crianças analisado à luz do contexto sociocultural, das ideias infantis sobre cuidado, das metas de socialização maternas e de comparações interculturais / Caregiving among children analysed under consideration of the socio- cultural context, the children´s ideas about infant care, the maternal socialization goals and cross-cultural comparisons

Ana Karina Santos 12 August 2011 (has links)
O cuidado espontâneo, observado entre as crianças do Bom Jardim, revela aspectos essenciais ligados ao modo vida da comunidade em vivem, confirmando o modo como o desenvolvimento está atrelado ao contexto e refletindo as diferentes estratégias de desenvolvimento contextodependentes / Children´s sensitiveness to another´s signals of need and the propensity for care confirm the inherent motivation for the spontaneous caregiving among them. This work analyses the caregiving behaviour among children under consideration of the children´s ideas about infant care, maternal socialization goals and cross-cultural comparisons. This study was conducted in the day care center of a rural village in the countryside of Sergipe, a state located in the northeast of Brazil. The participants of the study were 17 children, from 4 to 6 years old, and 27 mothers. Children´s behaviours during free activities were videotaped. Picture cards interviews were used to investigate their ideas about infant care. The mothers answered a socialization goals comparison scale. Results indicated that the highest occurrences of care were related to caressing, followed by supervision and help. For the categories help and caressing the care behaviours was directed towards same sex children. The picture-card chosen more frequently by the children was the one that exhibited the body contact system of care. Cross-cultural comparisons with German and Nso children, from Cameroon, revealed that the amount of words spoken by the children during the interview related to primary care, body contact and object stimulation were not significantly different among the three cultural contexts. The opposite was found for the amount of words related to body stimulation and face to face interaction. Mother´s socialization goals score indicated their preference for the relational goals. A cross-cultural analyse indicated that the Brazilian mothers socialization goals are closer to the ones of the mothers from New Delhi in comparison to the goals of mother from Berlin, Germany, rural Nso, Cameroon, and Gujarati, India. The number of people who take care of the child correlated positively with the mothers score for the relational socialization goals and the amount of caregiving behaviour among children in the category of caressing and supervision. Mothers´ socialization goals score correlated positively with the number of coded words related caressing spoken by the children during the interviews about care. These results indicate that the practices and values about care are inter-generation transmitted, reinforced by the cultural environment. The spontaneous among children from the village reveals aspects related to the way of life in the community, confirming that the development is context-dependent

Psychological wellbeing in relation to morbidity and mortality risk : exploring associations and potential mechanisms

Okely, Judith Anna January 2018 (has links)
There is evidence of a prospective association between wellbeing and health outcomes including disease risk and longevity. The aim of this thesis was firstly to further explore whether wellbeing is a risk factor for specific chronic physical diseases, and secondly, to identify potential mediators and moderators of the association between wellbeing and disease risk or longevity. Chapter 1 provides an overview of research into associations between wellbeing and physical health. In addition, we outline theoretical models of how the experience of high wellbeing might impact physical health. In chapters 2 and 3, we build on research into wellbeing and chronic physical disease risk. In these chapters, we tested whether the association between wellbeing and disease risk was similar across different types of disease, and, whether different theoretical domains of wellbeing varied in their association with disease risk. We found particularly strong associations - that were not explained by demographic or health behaviour differences - between higher wellbeing and lower risk of arthritis, diabetes or chronic lung disease. In chapter 4, we further explore the association between wellbeing and arthritis risk using mediation analysis. Specifically, we tested whether this association was mediated by inflammatory biomarkers. We found that the biomarker C-reactive protein accounted for a small proportion of the association between wellbeing and a reduced risk of arthritis. The focus of the next two chapters was on potential moderators of the association between wellbeing and mortality risk. In chapter 5, we examined whether the association between higher wellbeing and lower mortality risk varied across individualist and collectivist cultures. We found a significant interaction between individualism and wellbeing such that the association between wellbeing and risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease was stronger in more individualistic countries. In chapter 6, we examined how positive affect (a subdomain of wellbeing), interacted with another psychosocial factor, namely subjective stress. Here, we tested Pressman and Cohen's (2005) stress buffering hypothesis that positive affect may be most strongly related with health under stressful conditions. In support of this hypothesis, we found that the association between positive affect and all-cause mortality risk was stronger in people reporting higher stress. In the final chapter, we summarise our findings, discuss the limitations of our approach and make recommendations for future research.

Ungdomars attityder till sex

Appelfeldt, Emmy, Johansson, Frida January 2009 (has links)

Sexuality has an important role in human life and there are many opinions about how to handle questions about sexuality. The attitudes have change over time and differ between different cultures, gender and age. This study deals with the question about youth attitudes to sex and personal relationships and what impact the education in this filed have on the youth. We have also studied how the education is organized. To get answers to these questions we have performed a questionnaire study among 116 students in grade seven to nine in an elementary school in Western Sweden. We have also interviewed two teachers in nature science in high grade and one school nurse. The analyses about the youth attitudes to sex and personal relationship are based on theories about sexuality, gender, socialization, culture differences, globalization, and consumption society. The study shows that the youth in general are equal in their attitudes to sexuality. Nearness, respect, love, self-knowledge are important, regardless gender. The attitudes about intercourse were different between boys and girls. They didn´t value the factors about sexual intercourse in the same way. Internet and sms plays an important role in how come in touch with each other. Boys thought that internet are important in sexual education.

Influence of national cultural differences on communication and transmission channels in cross-border knowledge transfer : A case study of Q-Med AB

Martinsson, Therése, Suikki, Sabrina January 2007 (has links)

The purpose of this thesis is to develop an understanding of if/how national cultural differences influence communication and transmission channels in cross-border transfer of organizational knowledge. To develop such an understanding a single case study has been conducted on Q-Med AB, a Swedish knowledge intensive biotechnology/medical device company. The case study is based on two theories; Gupta & Govindarajan’s (2000) work of four forces that affect effective knowledge transfer and Project GLOBE’s nine cultural dimensions. Our findings confirm that national cultural differences do influence communication and transmission channels when transferring knowledge cross-borders. More specifically, our case study shows that the cultural differences influencing Q-Med AB’s communication and transmission channels are: Power Distance, Institutional Collectivism, In-Group Collectivism, Assertiveness and Performance Orientation. Also language differences are regarded as an important factor by Q-Med AB. However, the results of this thesis are specific for the company studied. Therefore our study only contributes with insights, regarding the influence of cultural differences on communication and transmission channels when transferring knowledge cross-borders, for other knowledge intensive companies facing global challenges. Our findings and conclusions are summarized in our own theoretical model, which brings together the two internationally well-acknowledged theories mentioned above and the results of our case study.
/
Arctic sojourn : a teacher's reflections

Harder, Dorothy Margit 14 April 2008
The research describes the experience of a southern white teacher who lived and worked in a remote community in Canada's Far North.
The impact of physical relocation and culture shock are discussed, as well as problems encountered when conflicting views of education and life goals meet in a cross-cultural setting. The thesis explores some of the difficulties facing mainstream teachers of Indigenous students when issues of past colonialism and present injustices come into play.
Inuit community literacies (visual, kinesic and oral traditions) are explored and contrasted with traditional definitions of literacy, which center on the paramount importance of the printed word. Power issues are discussed, including the role played by literacy education in maintaining control in the hands of the dominant culture.
The research is qualitative and phenomenological in nature. The teaching experience is viewed through a critical lens, and attempts to better understand the writer's southern white middle-class background as it relates to differing worldviews. The author recounts the process of re-examining assumptions of her own culture, and describes her personal and professional journey of coming to grips with its impact on her teaching.

Selling, Hanna, Torstensson, Mikaela, von Zweygbergk, Oona January 2011 (has links)
Background: The collaboration between Swedish and Chinese companies has significantly grown as the number of Swedish companies establishing in China has increased. This has resulted in collaborations between companies where new relationships develop in aim to gain bigger market share. One obstacle is the difference in culture between Sweden and China that creates challenges in developing the relationship between the two parties. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the challenges that may occur in the business relationship between Swedish and Chinese companies as well as the cultural characteristics that they are based on. Theory: The theoretical framework proceeds from theories that describe the cultural differences between Sweden and China. The priority is to understand the most significant cultural characteristics within each country’s business culture to be able to distinguish the challenges that can occur. We will further explain the characteristics that are important to business relationships as well as how the relationships have changed over time. Method: The empirical study is based on a qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviews from three individuals with long experience of living and working in China. The material from these interviews has been complemented by reports from the Swedish Trade Council, which has provided valuable information about what the economic situation for Swedish companies in China looks like today. Result and conclusion: According to this study we have identified seven challenges that are based on cultural differences between Sweden and China. These results refer to challenges in decision-making, the role of the manager and fundamental difference when it comes to price and quality. We have also noticed that the concept of relationships differs between the countries, which we believe have a big impact on the business relationship.
