The nature and dynamics of learning among caregivers in a National Certificate Training Programme

Nomvula Dlamini (Ms) January 2009 (has links)

The study analyses the relationship between experience, participation and learning and seeks to establish how the experience of adult learners can be mobilised through active participation and how situational conditions can either facilitate or inhibit participation and learning amongst the learners. Another dimension of the study seeks to establish what caregivers learn and the processes through which they learn and how such learning contributes to changes in behaviour and relationships. In this study, the nature and dynamics of learning amongst adult learners in the NCTP programme at community level is explored as an example of socio-cultural theory and situated learning which hold that learning results from participation in various socio-cultural situations &ndash / the act of participation is seen as crucial in the learning. The study focused on a group of 10 learners in the National Certificate Training Programme for community health workers who are also caregivers in the Nokuthembeka Home-based Care Programme in New Crossroads in the Cape Town metropole and used a qualitative research design and interpretive approach to understand the situations in which they learn. An interpretive approach allowed for deeper insight into the socio-cultural contexts that influence the social interactions of caregivers with peers as well as their learning. In the study I argue that the experience of caregivers forms a critical resource and the foundational basis for learning.

&nbsp /

Exploring the Impacts of Intimate Partner Violence on Emerging Adult Women’s Sense of Self: A Qualitative Case Study

Butler, Kathryn Laura 16 December 2014 (has links)
Emerging adulthood, the period between 18 and 30 years of age, is particularly relevant for identity development. During this time, relational disconnections such as intimate partner violence (IPV) can inhibit the growth that occurs within interpersonal relationships. There has been little in-depth exploration of how emerging adult women describe the impacts of IPV on their sense of self. Using qualitative case study methodology, six young women shared their stories of IPV during open-ended narrative interviews and completed an exploration of their Possible Selves. Thematic analysis identified impacts of IPV relating to participants’ sense of self, future possible selves, and subsequent intimate relationships. The findings highlight participants’ self-descriptions of strength and resilience, as well as accounts of challenges and growth since the relationships ended. The findings have meaningful implications for theory and research on IPV for young women, and for counselling practice. / Graduate / kateborsato@gmail.com

A novella of ideas : how interactive new media art can effectively communicate an indigenous philosophical concept

Peacock, Christine January 2009 (has links)
How interactive new media art can effectively communicate an indigenous philosophical concept. The sophistication and complexity of the philosophical concept concerning relationships between land and people and between people, intrinsic to the laws and customs of Australian Indigenous society, has begun to be communicated and accessed beyond the realm of anthropological and ethnological domains of Western scholarship. The exciting scope and rapid development of new media arts presents an innovative means of creating an interactive relationship with the general Australian public, addressing the urgent need for an understanding of Indigenous Australian concepts of relationship to land, and to each other, absent from Western narratives. The study is framed by an Indigenous concept of place, and relationships between land and people and between people; and explores how this concept can be clearly communicated through interactive new media arts. It involves: a creative project, the development of an interactive new media art project, a website work-in-progress titled site\sight\cite; and an exegesis, a Novella of Ideas, on the origins, influences, objectives, and potential of creative practices and processes engaged in the creative project. Research undertaken for the creative project and exegesis extended my creative practice into the use of interdisciplinary arts, expressly for the expression of philosophical concepts, consolidating 23 years experience in Indigenous community arts development. The creative project and exegesis contributes to an existing body of Indigenous work in a range of areas - including education, the arts and humanities - which bridges old and new society in Australia. In this study, old and new society is defined by the time of the initial production of art and foundations of knowledge, in the country of its origins, in Indigenous Australia dating back at least 40,000 years.

Vigotski, one of the greatest representatives of the Historical-Cultural Theory, defined the zone of proximal development (ZPD) category, as the level of development in which the child is capable of performing its actions by means of the involvement with someone culturally more experienced. For him, good instruction is the one that makes the development of the child advance, and that is possible, we believe, once the teaching process works with the possibilities in the area of proximal development. Consistent with this guidance, this search aimed to establish the possible relations between the pedagogical work of the teacher and the zone of proximal development of the students in the teaching and learning processes of the written language. This search was conducted with eight teachers and sixteen students of the first and second series of the elementary school of the municipal system of education of the city of Marília. The data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews, observations and records of episodes of the teacher-student interaction in the strict limits of the situations of textual production. Besides, we analyzed the students’ texts, gathered during the search. The results indicate that the teacher who develops strongly effective actions organizes the instruction in order to deal with the possibilities of students learning capacity by providing them the necessary assistance to the appropriation of cultural contents they work with, makes them progress in their development, giving potency to it. While she develops her work, the teacher interacts with her students, allowing them objectify their needs and interests, besides dealing with the written language by its social function and providing differentiated aid in the moment of textual production. This kind of action has implications in the learning process.

Communicative Experiences of African American Female Pilots on the Flight Deck: An Application of Co-Cultural Theory and Narrative Nonfiction to Inform Crew Resource Management

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT This study sought to inform the curriculum of crew resource management (CRM) for multi-pilot flight deck operations. The CRM curriculum requires continued reexamination to ensure safe flight in the changing demographic of flight decks in the US. The study calls attention to the CRM curriculum’s insufficient inclusion of robust training components to address intercultural communication skills and conflict management strategies. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, the study examined the communicative experiences of African American female military and airline transport pilots on the flight deck and within the aviation industry. Co-cultural theory was used as a theoretical framework to investigate these co-researcher’s (pilots) experiences. A parallel goal of the investigation was to better understand raced and gendered communication as they occur in this specific context—the flight deck of US airlines and military aircraft. The researcher conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews and shadowed two co-researchers (pilots) for a period of days and built a relationship with them over the course of one year. Eight years of preparation working in the airline industry situated the researcher for this study. The researcher collected stories and interviews during this time immersed in industry. The data collected offers initial insights into the experiences of non-dominant group members in this unique organizational environment. The study’s findings are reported in the form of a creative/narrative nonfiction essay. This effort was twofold: (1) the narrative served to generate a record of experiences for continued examination and future research and (2) created useful data and information sets accessible to expert and non-expert audiences alike. The data supports rationalization as a co-cultural communication strategy, a recent expansion of the theory. Data also suggests that another strategy—strategic alliance building—may be useful in expanding the scope of co-cultural theory. The proposed assertive assimilation orientation identifies the intentional construct of alliances and warrants further investigation. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Communication 2015

Because it is a theoretical study on the Historical-cultural Theory as well as the theoretical and methodological contributions made by international authors, were analyzed books and articles of the aforementioned authors, therefore the methodology adopted for this research is theoretical and bibliographical. With our analysis, we conclude that to the authors worked, Early Childhood Education should be structured to promote scientific learning of the child, goal of all education, therefore, play, regarded as the dominant activity of the preschool period, must be considered in the space of Early Childhood Education and can contribute to the development of the child. In the development of this work, we focus on the contributions of Marilyn Fleer, to be among the chosen authors, the author who has more discussed the issue of play in the space of Early Childhood Education. Therefore, we hope to contribute to think one Early Childhood Education quality for all walks of life, seeking the comprehensive development of children under five years in their maximum potential, based on the assumptions of Historicalcultu al Theory.

Moraes, Fabiana Aparecida de 22 December 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T19:39:07Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 2759.pdf: 4977359 bytes, checksum: fc5144ab8d9aa3b799926bfdae08074b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-12-22 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / Promoting Primary Education which provides children with thorough development requires the approach of knowledge, attitude and values in training professional educators who act at this level of teaching. Taking into consideration the premise that all the learning which takes place during childhood stays with us throughout life, it is important to observe the assistance that young learners have been receiving during such a period in Primary Education institutions in order to better understand the childish actions which take place in these places and how the children s development have been approached. The present work is the product of a field research carried out at a Primary Education institution in the city of Araraquara in São Paulo, which was accomplished so as to check if and how the mediation work of the teachers during the games take place as well as their contribution to the children s development. Therefore, the attempt was to identify how the professionals involved in this context conceive the play a game idea and their approach towards the kids when they are engaged in such an activity. The methodological procedures adopted in this work consisted of observations and interviews. The observations were carried out both when the children were in the classroom with the teacher and when they were doing free activities in the playground. Some interventions took place during the observations when the children were playing. Afterwards, interviews with the preschool children (3 to 6 years old) were carried out, who were asked about their idea of playing, the games they play and the places where these games take place. Furthermore, we also carried out interviews with the teachers and the educational agents, who are the people who attend the children throughout the period in which they stay at the institution. The methodological and theoretical reference on which this work was based was the Historical and Cultural theory by Vigotsky, which supported the data collection and analysis. The most significant results which were obtained show that the teachers assume a passive posture towards the possible mediation opportunities, thus restricting their acting to the explanation of a certain rule to the game or pulling the kids apart in case of conflicts. Considering the actions performed by the researcher during the games, it was possible to check that the main mediation opportunities should be based on constant observation, which is an important instrument to achieve mediations which are appropriate to the learning needs of the children. The importance of a deeper theoretical training for the teachers should also be highlighted, one which not only contributes to the games at the school day-to-day , but also so that these moments are legitimated through intentional mediations in order to promote an effective and thorough development of the children.

This research aims to present the possibilities of acting of the psychologist and the interdisciplinary team in the education, realizing a process of intervention of historical and cultural nature in the school, with the intention of enabling the construction of a space of action, reflection and action in the interior of public school. The specific objectives are focused on the promotion of reflections on the problems experienced in the daily life of the school, together with teachers and managers, especially on school complaints, in order to transform crystalized and naturalizing conceptions, carry out a research-intervention process with students and to provide favorable learning and development conditions, breaking with the model of clinical-psychological performance in school. The research-intervention process carried out followed the assumptions of historical-cultural theory and the foundations of historical-dialectical materialism. The research was carried out in a public school of the Municipal Education System of Presidente Prudente / SP. The subjects were the managers, teachers and students of a classroom of the 3rd year, Elementary School, cycle I. The methodology was based on weekly meetings with managers and teachers, during HTPC moments and with students, also weekly , in the classroom and on the school grounds. The research-intervention process with the managers and teachers was carried out by means of a discussion of topics of interest to the group and with the students, ludopedagogues activities were carried out involving games, games, dramatizations, debates and collective discussions. At the end of the research-intervention process qualitative changes were observed in the subjects, mainly in terms of conceptions, collective work, educational work, study activity, resistance / alienation situations and consciousness / humanization. We found that a researchintervention process carried out collectively and historically and culturally, can generate transformations in the subjects and in the school, creating different conditions for the improvement and transformation of the public school, through the construction of a critical awareness of the participants' subjects.
