Leadership development, identity, culture and context : a qualitative case study

Nedjati-Gilani, Parisa January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the impact and effects of a leadership development programme in-depth and over time. There has been a lack of attention given to understanding the impact of such interventions in the academic literature. Where studies do investigate the impact (s) of leadership development they tend to focus almost exclusively on positive outcomes or the achievement of pre-determined targets and tend to be short-term in focus. This research finds that there is also a shadow side of leadership development, defined as the unintended effects of leadership development programmes which can be counter-productive and dysfunctional. A longitudinal case study approach was adopted comprising documentary analysis, observation and interviews, the latter of which were conducted with multiple stakeholders at three different junctures in time during and beyond the length of the leadership development programme. Three conceptual dimensions of identity, organisational culture and organisational context were identified which together facilitated a multi-faceted understanding of the changing impact and effects of the leadership development programme over time. In conclusion this thesis makes both a theoretical and methodological contribution by adding a longitudinal, multi-level analysis and evaluation of leadership development, evidencing both positive and shadow impacts and effects.

Srovnání strategických kultur Československa a Finska před druhou světovou válkou / Comparative analysis of Czechoslovak and Finnish strategic cultures before World War II

Jílek, Tomáš January 2013 (has links)
Aim of the thesis is to examine the influence of strategic culture on states and their most substantial decisions. The concept of strategic culture introduced first by Jack Snyder in the 1970s is today generally accepted, there are even warnings that culturalism may become too fashionable, indeed some authors say this is already happening. Most works however focus on strategic cultures of countries with long and rich history, historical experience and a great amount of various doctrinal documents - such as USA, Russia, China or India. My aim is to identify the influence of strategic culture in small countries, with a rather short period of independence - Finland and Czechoslovakia before World War II. They differ in one crucial decision: Czechoslovakia had decided to yield to German territorial demands, while Finland had decided not to do so and as a result faced a war against the Soviet Union. Hypothesis of this work is that this crucial difference is caused by different strategic cultures in the two contexts.

Such characteristics circumscribe these writings in a distinct context of the language use and bring implications in relation to the translation practice. In the case of the Bible, the Christians, who enshrine it accept it as divine Word and hope that its message is preserved, and nothing in it is changed. In this sense, translations may or may not cater to the expectations of the target public, being subjected to what Simms (1997) calls for sensibility. Along this line, this thesis aims to evaluate the sensibility in the translation of the sacred book as a practice that reveals the group of voices in the interaction and discuss as the relations between the interaction and the sensibility, genre and translation may signal the existence of a distinct discursive mode, whose nuances can be derived interlacement among language and context. Thus, based on the functionalist theory (HALLIDAY, 1978; 2004; HALLIDAY; HASAN, 1989; DIK, 1997; EGGINS, 2004), a comparative study of linguistic and discursive aspects in textual sequences of the New Testament was done, from following Biblical Portuguese versions used by Catholics and Protestants: Versão Almeida revista e atualizada (1993, ARA); Bíblia de Jerusalém (2002, BJ); Tradução ecumênica (1994, TEB); Nova versão internacional (2001, NVI); Edição pastoral (1990, EP); Nova tradução na linguagem de hoje (2000, NTLH). Besides this, a questionnaire was prepared with questions whose aim was to analyze receptors expectations about Biblical translation. With this research, it was observed that the various biblical versions have distinct functions in different contexts and cater to the expectations of the target public in for use in particular situations.

A semantic perspective of culture modeling toward service innovation

Tai, Hua Cheng Unknown Date (has links)
To do service innovation and to develop culture and creative industry are becoming a hot issue in these years. A lot of researches have been demonstrating the importance of culture and how it relates or influences to people's decision making and business management. However, few researches to date show the IT enabled use of culture ingredients to do service innovation. Accordingly, in this research we aim to investigate if there is any possibility for us to utilize cultural factors and IT to facilitate the creation service innovation opportunities. Therefore, we intend to view service innovation from the lens of local cultural factors and IT, especially for the small and medium business owners (SMBs). In this paper, we proposed “cultural interpretations” as the emotions, values and behavior, etc. which people convey out through the effect of culture. In addition, we come up with a semantic information system to motive or inspire SMBs with a new way to think about service innovation by leveraging the local culture in terms of the perspective of “cultural interpretations”. We believe our system could motive SMBs to understand their culture context and then achieve the goal of doing service innovation.

Aging in China and its impact on vehicle design

Zhao, Chao January 2008 (has links)
This study contributes to the growth of design knowledge in China, where vehicle design for the local, older user is in its initial developmental stages. Therefore, this research has explored the travel needs of older Chinese vehicle users in order to assist designers to better understand users’ current and future needs. A triangulation method consisting of interviews, logbook and co-discovery was used to collect multiple forms of data and so explore the research question. Grounded theory has been employed to analyze the research data. This study found that users’ needs are reflected through various ‘meanings’ that they attach to vehicles – meanings that give a tangible expression to their experiences. This study identified six older-user need categories: (i) safety, (ii) utility, (iii) comfort, (iv) identity, (v) emotion and (vi) spirituality. The interrelationships among these six categories are seen as an interactive structure, rather than as a linear or hierarchical arrangement. Chinese cultural values, which are generated from particular local context and users’ social practice, will play a dynamic role in linking and shaping the travel needs of older vehicle users in the future. Moreover, this study structures the older-user needs model into three levels of meaning, to give guidance to vehicle design direction: (i) the practical meaning level, (ii) the social meaning level and (ii) the cultural meaning level. This study suggests that a more comprehensive explanation exists if designers can identify the vehicle’s meaning and property associated with the fulfilled older users’ needs. However, these needs will vary, and must be related to particular technological, social, and cultural contexts. The significance of this study lies in its contributions to the body of knowledge in three areas: research methodology, theory and design. These theoretical contributions provide a series of methodological tools, models and approaches from a vehicle design perspective. These include a conditional/consequential matrix, a travel needs identification model, an older users’ travel-related needs framework, a user information structure model, and an Older-User-Need-Based vehicle design approach. These models suggest a basic framework for the new design process which might assist in the design of new vehicles to fulfil the needs of future, aging Chinese generations. The models have the potential to be transferred to other design domains and different cultural contexts.
