O estigma da deficiência física e o paradigma da reconstrução biocibernética do corpo / Physical disability and the bodys bio-cybernetics reconstruction paradigmJoon Ho Kim 06 December 2013 (has links)
Both paralysis and amputation are body characteristics that tend to result in stigma, which means, in other words, that the mere perception of their existence may depreciate the social identity of those who have these traits. However, the emergence of prosthetic technologies enabling amputees to compete at the Olympic level against people without disabilities are provoking reactions that contradict the general rule pursuant to which one usually avoids exposing characteristics that cause stigma. Moreover, amputees stereotyped images have been increasingly reaching more media exposure as a cyborg dream that comes true: the organic body enhanced through its hybridization by means of cybernetic systems. In the midst of this imagery, the robotic exoskeleton technology derived from military industry emerges as a solution that promises to reestablish the movements of persons with spinal cord injuries. However, the obsession with their encapsulation inside supernumerary robotic bodies, to the detriment of other technologies and therapies, seems more driven by the symbolism of a simulated bipedalism, which aims to erase the differences between disabled and normal person, than actual rehabilitation. The physical disability and the bio-cybernetic technologies applied to the bodys rehabilitation and reconstruction, expose, not only the irreducible social dimension of the body, but also demonstrate that even the technical and scientific thinking operates under a symbolic logic, disguised under a presumably objective selective set of scopes and classifications. It is not a coincidence that bipedal restoration of persons with paralysis is close to the biblical miracle imagery, since the body-machine from which bio-cybernetics is the evolution, and the body of Christian cosmology rooted in the Middle Age, are not completely exclusionary. In fact, although they constitute antagonistic meaning systems, both concepts of the body share the same unconscious symbolic structures and, above all, they fulfill the same imperative of giving meaning to a reality that cannot be explained in its entirety only by reason. It is to this regard that this thesis will reflect.

Previous issue date: 2012-06-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Cordel Literature, also known as string literature , constitutes one of the traditional poetical verses of Northeastern Brazil, characterized by the written production and specific typographic records. The communicational processes occupy, hence, a privileged position. In the last two decades, the cordelists have started performing through poetic contests by means of e-mail or chat communities on social networks, publishing what is called virtual battles , battles based on the cordel s imaginary battles, which can already be seen in titles of the 20th century. Thus, these written contests tradition harks back to the poetic challenges between two improvisers who would perform before an enthralled audience. The contests of cordelists and improvisers safe guard several codes and simultaneously interweave poetical elements which have been updated for centuries. Combining fixed forms, rhythm, themes, verbal duels, be they improvised or not, are recurrent in the poetry of cordelists, guitar players, coquistas, cirandeiros, maracatu masters, carnival ox, caboclinhos, rural carnival parades, samba of the countryside man. Face to face challenges, printed challenges, web-mediated challenges pave the way for the articulation of these expressions into a great poetical, oral text going through a continuous process in updating the virtual matrices. The research corpus harbors battle booklets (virtual and fictional); face-to-face challenges; poetry performing events; recorded virtual battles that took place on the web, cds and dvds by improvisers and cordelists. Participants observation, interviews and qualitative analysis of large texts that have been utilized in virtual contests (mediated by twitter, msn, facebook, orkut, sites, portals, email, and so forth) are in the methodology covering the fictional battles of cordelists and improvisers. Pursuant to the interdisciplinary concepts of communication by Jesús Martín-Barbero; tradition, performance and movement by Paul Zumthor; great oral text and virtual matrices by Jerusa Pires Ferreira; cyber-culture by Francisco Rüdiger, I propose to carry out a comparative study on the production of improvisers and cordelists spanning mainly the decades from 1990/2000. The purpose of the study is to investigate the existence of memories confluence and combination in the articulation of this large communication text in an ever adapting process, and also to speculate to what extent one can define such poetry as a recognizable cultural series / A literatura de cordel se constitui numa das poéticas tradicionais do Nordeste do Brasil, caracterizada por produção escrita e registro tipográfico específicos.

Previous issue date: 2009-03-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research had as the main objective to verify the relation between the cyber culture and the myth of the perfect and universal language. From the hypothesis that the cyber culture, mainly its phenomenon of biggest visibility, Web, is included in a movement named by Gérard Genette as cratylism or secondary mimologism . A tradition made by idealists that through times searched to repair the mistake of the natural language through a supposed adamic and divine language or by projects of artificial languages, universal grammars or poetical languages. It is about a long journey which starts on a mythical area with the Biblical narratives, particularly with the history of the world‟s origin and the Tower of Babel, and in rational area with the dialog Cratyle by Plato. It was used as methodology the bibliographical research, by a secondary order observation . The thesis brings initially the relation between myth and language, with approach especially to the concept of myth developed by Roland Barthes. Then it goes to the delineation of a cyber culture mythology. Later it is done an analysis of the dialog Cratyle by Plato, based on the particular interpretation of this work made by Gérard Genette in his book Mimologiques. Following the genettian concept of secondary cratylism, the work includes in its theoretical construction the philosophical and literary reflection of the language, oriented by works of authors like Stephane Mallarmé, Paul Valéry, Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, Jorge Luis Borges, Haroldo de Campos, among others. In what Umberto Eco names as research of the perfect language‟, the airtight chain, from the memory art by Ramon Llull to the binary codes by Leibniz, theories considered as the origin of the contemporary computer language. The aspects of the alphabetical language were also verified and the passage to the digital culture, looking for a relation with the thesis object. In the end, theories were analyzed to explain the digital culture phenomena / Esta pesquisa teve como principal objetivo verificar a relação entre a cibercultura e o mito da língua perfeita e universal.

Between real and virtual: and ethnographic research of MMORPG phenomenon / Tarp virtualaus ir realaus: etnografinis MMORPG fenomeno tyrimasŠataitė, Rasa 12 June 2012 (has links)
In the wake of recent discourses growing around metaphors like globalization and information age, information society, information and communication technologies move into cyber anthropology's focus. Although online games and online gaming communities are not new, the rising interest in online games and the number of people playing online games means that such games and the corresponding communities that seem to evolve out of then have potential to be fertile ground for social researchers. One particularly useful method is that of virtual ethnographies, or participant observation in the game itself. Through an ethnographical research of the Lord of the Rings Online and an online gaming community that has emerged within this game, this work attempts outline the process of virtual ethnography that combines emic and etic methods of data gathering adapted to the virtual context to provide a ‘true’ accounting of the social constructs inherent in the virtual world.
Massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) are present for almost a decade now, but they have become significantly popular only over the past through years. During the past 6 years the MMORPG turned into a thriving cultural phenomenon with over 20 million people daily involved in various social interactions. MMORPGs provide a unique space for social interaction as players no longer share the same physical environment and the non-verbal communication in no longer available. In such games players also are no... Šiame darbe siekiama pateikti tikrą socialinių konstruotų virtualioje erdvėje formavimosi aprašą remiantis etnografiniu Žiedų valdovo internetinio žaidimo (Lordo of the Rings Online) bei tame žaidime susikūrusios bendruomenės tyrimu naudojantis virtualios etnografijos metodu apjungiančiu eminę ir etinę perspektyvą.

Previous issue date: 2017-01-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) / This study aims to analyze the strategies and complexities for music diffusion,
circulation and consumption, having as scope the appropriation of
communication tools and venues by musicians independent of the cities of São
Luis - MA and Teresina - PI; reflect on the impacts of these recent but
transformative movements against the new dynamics of culture in the digital
era; and, also, to understand strains and challenges of artistic autonomy and
independence given the dominant music industry. In our first methodological
walkthrough, which was the bibliographical one, we have sought the
comprehension about the online culture, associated to the communication
practices in the cyberspace. Due to a restructuring in the music industry,
opportunities have been opened in which the independent artist and the fans
have commenced to act at the core of the process of transmitting and
circulating culture in the virtual sphere, due to the appropriations of the current
digital communication means. As online sociocultural experiences differ from
face-to-face experiences, we have deemed significant to use as methodological
contribution to empirical research the online ethnography or netnography. In a
qualitative manner, this study does not offer universal generalizations, as it is
based on a particular and specific context. Nevertheless, it is understood that
this netnographic study can raise theoretical formulations that deepen the
understanding of the complex relation established in this context. The online
fields studied were three fan pages of independent bands from the cities of São
Luis and Teresina. To implement the study, several methods were combined in
the netnographic research, among them: direct participant observation in social
networking sites, face-to-face interviews, observation - with a specific target -
and archival data collections (taken from social network pages of analyzed
bands). As a sample, we have had three bands from the independent music
scene of the cities aforementioned, whose representatives were interviewed in
person at the data collection stage. To analyze the research data, we have
followed the proposed criteria for the netnographic study and associated it with
two other methods: interviewing analysis and network conversation analysis.
After this walkthrough, our study identified, in relation to the analyzed bands,
the strategies employed in social networking sites in view of fans' participation
and engagement, aiming at achieving network popularity. We also analyzed the
difficulties and challenges that the independent musicians of our research have
faced in order to circulate their art in cyberspace; we have pointed out that this
fact is associated to control mechanisms of the traditional media that are
occupying the virtual space. Therefore, the so-called network neutrality can be a
utopia that is further and further away from being achieved. Our study is
interdisciplinary and the analysis bases are the communication sciences and
the computer-mediated communication (CMC), since they are a constituent and
decisive part of new habits, sociability manners and social relationship
practices, merged into the day-to-day basis of billions of people. / Este estudo objetivou analisar as estratégias e as complexidades para
comunicação no ciberespaço.
Tão logo, a suposta

Abstract The purpose of the present study was to clarify and describe what image men and women present and communicate in their profiles on an online dating site. Further has been investigated if traditional gender roles and stereotypes are as pronounced on this online platform or if it offers a space to go beyond traditional formations. The theoretical framework of this study consisted of a social psychological idea and understanding of identity as well as a gender theoretical perspective. The methodological points of departure were hermeneutic and the data consisted of ten male and ten female member profiles on match.com. The results of the study was divided into three themes, the emphasis on positive qualities, the attractive body and project manager to one’s own life. The results showed that both men and women present a positive image of themselves in their profiles, both concerning inner and outer qualities. The results also indicated that a life with various social activities is of great importance, which implies a reflexive attitude towards life. To create an image of oneself is strenuous work in constant change. Regarding traditional gender roles and stereotypes about what is being regarded as male and female showed that traditional, stereotype ways of describing masculinity and femininity exist, but there were certain tendencies that a crossing of traditional formations takes place on this platform. However, the result of this study has also revealed that this happens to a lesser extent than we first thought.

Adventures in cyberformanceJamieson, Helen Varley January 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines the new theatrical form of cyberformance (live performance by remote players using internet technologies) and contextualises it within the broader fields of networked performance, digital performance and theatre. Poststructuralist theories that contest the binary distinction between reality and representation provide the analytical foundation for the thesis. A critical reflexive methodological approach is undertaken in order to highlight three themes. First, the essential qualities and criteria of cyberformance are identified, and illustrated with examples from the early 1990s to the present day. Second, two cyberformance groups – the Plaintext Players and Avatar Body Collision – and UpStage, a purpose-built application for cyberformance, are examined in more detailed case studies. Third, the specifics of the cyberformance audience are explored and commonalities are identified between theatre and online culture. In conclusion, this thesis suggests that theatre and the internet have much to offer each other in this current global state of transition, and that cyberformance offers one means by which to facilitate the incorporation of new technologies into our lives.
