Entre dois mundos: a loucura feminina nos romances A Louca de Serrano, de Dina Salústio, e O alegre canto da perdiz, de Paulina Chiziane / Between two worlds: the female insanity in the novels A Louca de Serrano, by Dina Salústio, and O alegre canto da perdiz, by Paulina Chiziane

Juliana Primi Braga 18 October 2013 (has links)
The female literature in the post-colonial societies is considered by Gayatri C. Spivak as a process of metonymic saga of women used as a complain instrument, which allows the myths and the prejudices failure a long time reinforced by the patriarchal discourse. Among the women who found her voice and spoke up, no longer considered as only native informants of oral histories of their culture deserve mention the Cape Verdean Dina Salústio, Vera Duarte, Fátima Bettencourt, Orlanda Amarilis and Dulce Almada Duarte, and the Mozambican Paulina Chiziane and Lilia Momplé. The objective of this work is to investigate in the Dina Salústios and Paulina Chizianes novels A Louca de Serrano and O alegre canto da perdiz, respectively, how the insanity theme is built, represented by the african women (and characters) Louca de Serrano and Maria das Dores, which can be understood as a voice full of loneliness, pain, denial, rebelliousness and nonconformism and as a resistance mark to the women marginalization into and by the hegemonic social practices.

Diagnostic measurement from a standardized math achievement test using multidimensional latent trait models

Jun, Hea Won 22 May 2014 (has links)
The present study compares applications of continuous multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) models for their diagnostic potential. Typically, MIRT models have not been used for diagnosing the possession of skills or attributes by students, but several researchers have suggested that they can potentially be used for this purpose (e.g., Stout, 2007; Wainer, Vevea, Camacho, Reeve, Rosa, Nelson, Swygert, & Thissen, 2001). This study applies MIRT models to a standardized eighth grade mathematics achievement test that was constructed based on a hierarchically-structured blueprint consisting of standards, benchmarks, and indicators. Only the highest level, consisting of four standards, was used to define the dimensions. The confirmatory models were defined using the standards that had been scored for involvement in each item. For the current study, the exploratory MIRT (EMIRT) model was interpreted with respect to the dimensions. Then, the compensatory and confirmatory MIRT (CMIRT) models and the full information bifactor model were fitted. The interpretation of dimensions, empirical reliabilities of person estimates, and test- and item-fit were examined. Also, dimension and pattern probabilities were obtained for determining their diagnostic potential. Last, a noncompensatory MIRT model (MLTM-D; Embretson & Yang, 2011) and the DINA model (Haertel, 1989; Junker & Sijtsma, 2001) in use as diagnostic models were analyzed to compare pattern probabilities with the compensatory CMIRT model.

In that sense, we sought to comprehend the idealization and the creation of DINA by the Military Joint of Government, under direct command of General Augusto Pinochet. The presented studies reveal that the Chilean dictatorship and DINA institute a wide movement of the right wing authoritarianism and antidemocratic against the social and political changes in course on that context and that they aimed to set up a project of bourgeois autocracy entitled “republic refoundation” and the establishment of a so-called “protected democracy”. The DINA as an unprecedented apparatus until 1974 performed roles beyond repression and suppression of social struggles or against dictatorship resistance. Its mission was the annihilation of the left and Marxism paving the way for the Chilean society standardization on the molds of a capitalist society.

Using the van Hiele theory to analyse geometrical conceptualisation in grade 12 students: a Namibian perspective

Mateya, Muhongo January 2009 (has links)
The study reported here utilised a theory of levels of geometric thinking. This theory was proposed and developed by two Dutch mathematics educators, Pierre van Hiele and his wife, Dina van Hiele-Geldof. The van Hiele theory enables investigations into why many students experience difficulties in learning geometry. In many nations, such as the UK, the USA, Netherlands, the USSR and to a certain extent, Nigeria and South Africa, research evidence has indicated that the overall students’ mathematical competencies are linked to their geometric thinking levels. This study is the first of its kind to apply the van Hiele theory of geometric thinking in the Namibian context to analyse geometrical conceptualisation in Grade 12 mathematics students. In all, 50 Grade 12 students (20 from School A and 30 from School B) were involved in this study. These students wrote a van Hiele Geometry Test adapted from the Cognitive Development and Achievement in Secondary School Geometry test items. Thereafter, a clinical interview with the aid of manipulatives was conducted. The results from this study indicated that many of the School A and School B students who participated in the research have a weak conceptual understanding of geometric concepts: 35% of the School A and 40% of the School B subsamples were at the prerecognition level. 25% and 30% of the School A, and 20% and 23.3% of the School B students were at van Hiele levels 1 and 2 respectively. An equal number of students but different in percentages, 2 (10%) in School A and 2 (6.7%) in School B, were at van Hiele level 3. Only one student from School B attained van Hiele level 4. These results were found to be consistent with those of previous similar studies in UK, USA, Nigeria and South Africa. The findings of this study also highlight issues of how the Namibian Grade 12 geometry syllabus should be aligned with the van Hiele levels of geometric thinking as well as the use of appropriate and correct language in geometrical thinking and problem solving.

The new within the given : collage principles and processes in contemporary painting

Edelsburg, Zahava 01 1900 (has links)
Collage is presented as an allegoric art-form sui generis, considering allegory itself as an open-ended form of art. The research provides a suggestion to a different understanding of collage i.e.: as a catalyst for a search for structure and semiotic relationships in an attempt to overcome a constant disordered expansion of an intertextual web and hermeneutic possibilities; and as an open work, providing multi-layered meanings. As an open work collage is typified by the prominent role of its "readers", its ambiguity and the infinite net of references it summons. Collage may be conceived as a bridge between modernism and postmodernism, structuralism and post-structuralism; as a model for constant innovation and suppleness; as a stimulator for meta-artistic questions, acceptance of "soft" universals and reevaluation of the role of the Other within an artwork. Works by Jasper Johns, Michal Na'aman, Dina Hoffman and myself exemplify these ideas. / Visual Arts / M.A. (Visual Arts)

Women's experience, spirituality and theology for liberation and life in contemporary South Africa as expressed through visual arts with a focus on the lives and work of two women artists - Dina Cormick and Bonnie Ntshalintshali.

Buckenham, Karen Elizabeth. January 2001 (has links)
Art as an expression of spirituality and theology has the artist as a potential visionary and mediator of the spiritual. All over the world and in South Africa, the visual has been used to illustrate thought patterns, religious themes, religiousity, and to draw people closer to God. However, questions arise about how the visual images depicted by visionaries/artists express social movements, and more deeply, spiritual longings of God for liberation and life. This dissertation explores the question of representation of women's spirituality and theology for liberation and life in contemporary South Africa through visual arts. With a particular look at the lives and work of two women artists of KwaZulu Natal- Dina Cormick and Bonnie Ntshalintshali, I map the interface between religion, art, spirituality and theology, and expressions of reality of those who are dominated people. I look at women's spirituality in South Africa, art as theology, creative expressions as ways to hide and reveal, and at the specific artists in whose lives and work these questions intersect. I argue that visual art is a powerful means of both shaping and expressing spirituality and theology, and if 'read' with attention and discipline, reveals incipient movements of the Spirit. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2001.
