O desequilíbrio familiar e a identidade americana nas peças de Sam Shepard / The unbalanced family and American identity in the plays of Sam Shepard

Ligia Razera Gallo 09 March 2012 (has links)
Em Curse of the Starving Class, Buried Child, Shepard retrata a dor ecoando dentro do círculo familiar. / This study analyzes three dramatic works of Sam Shepard: Curse of the Starving Class, Buried Child and Fool for Love within the context of their shared obsession with the American dream of a harmonious family showing a deviation of the dream which is also predominant in plays of American playwrights such as O\'Neill and Miller, preceding Sam Shepard. This study also investigates the concept of American identity in the plays. Among the works of playwright Sam Shepard there are three plays that explore what it means to be a member of a family in the U.S. Midwest. In Curse of the Starving Class, Buried Child, Shepard portrays the pain echoing within the family. As the initial work of Shepard, these family plays reveal themselves with a strong biographical element, born of personal experience and persistent concerns of the playwright, through the plays, he examines and reviews the multigenerational family system of which he also derives from. For example, the father\'s alcoholism and how the fathers of his plays are constructed from a personal perspective are much more than simple features of the characters, it is a condition that affects all the characters, their relationships and their interpersonal destinations. In addition, we note that the American dream and its relationship with that family instability is one of the recurring themes in dramas written by the author. Another aim of this study is, at first look at the American dream from a historical perspective to define its many facets from colonial times to the twentieth century, as depicted in the drama, and secondly on a thematic level to identify the various themes Sam Shepard uses in his plays, such as family ties tampered with, alienation, inability to communicate, violence, wife-lover surreal relationship, and the search for identity and to define how they prevent the fulfillment of the \'dream\', and finally, the features used by Sam Shepard, which serve to make the plays as instances of the \'dream\' of a harmonious family becoming a nightmare. In the play Fool for Love we also analyze the tyranny exercised by the family on the lives of their grown children. From 1977 until 1985, Shepard is away from the fatalistic acceptance and thereby reveals changes in both the authorial perspective and the social environment. As he does often in his work, Shepard reflects the behavior of an era.

Voyage au bout de la nuit, Louis-Ferdinand Céline: o itinerário de uma viagem / Voyage au bout de la nuit, Louis-Ferdinand Céline: the itinerary of a trip

Regina Lima Dantas Miguel 24 August 2010 (has links)
Journey to the end of the night (Voyage au bout de la nuit), by the French author, Louis- Ferdinand Celine, caused a stir in literary circles and the public at large when it was launched in 1932. Its vitriolic tone and the popular idiom in which it was written were quite unprecedented, as was the vehemence with which Ferdinand Bardamu decried social injustice. This, the first book written by Celine, created a huge impact and until today continues to occupy an important place in the world of literature. The authors intention to breathe new life into the French literary canon by introducing the popular idiom into the written language was, without doubt, one of the factors behind this impact. The form of protest adopted by the novel is two-pronged: alongside the vehement denunciation of an absurd world, was the blow which was aimed at the very heart of academic literary language. There can be no doubt that the vast resonance created by the work is the result of this choice of language, which was considered to be both innovative and revolutionary when judged by the standards of its time.Today, Celines invention of writing the way we speak, has a particular air of spontaneity, which would have been lost, had the author instead resorted to the artifice of a more elaborate style. If the choice of language set off a wave of resounding scandals at the time, nowadays it is not the language, but rather the violent manner in which Bardamu refers to his peers that creates a similar impact upon contemporary readership. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine the two driving forces behind the text: the writing and Celines universe. The manner in which the voyage is approached leads to the perception of a world wrought from a dreamstate dimension, since it is an imaginary voyage which is announced in the foreword of the novel. This journey of ours is entirely imaginary. The journey to the nights end, undertaken by Celine has the sense of a slow and deliberate journey towards death. Once immersed in this universe, we are led to a place where the itineraries of Bardamu and Celine converge, suggesting strong autobiographical associations. Finally, this analysis allows us to reflect on the usage of a language constructed upon the code of a popular idiom, a mechanism used by its creator to introduce the paradox of emotive reasoning expressed in the popular idiom, into the written language.

[Narration, système des personnages, temporalité] / Two similar fictive models : Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin, Remembrance of Things Past by Marcel Proust. [Narration, System of Characters, Temporality]

Chen, Yi-An 26 November 2010 (has links)
By examining the commonalities by structural, stylistic and semiotic tools, and by themes, this study aims to find the commonalities between the two Chinese and French novels: Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin and Remembrance of Things Past by Marcel Proust. Based on our analysis in Part I, a specific form on three aspects - the narration, the system of characters and the temporality - is found to be common in both works. It is of a circular shape, closing in on itself, analogue to a metaphor but extends to all the text, which we call "the metaphorization." The metaphorization on these three aspects will be the center of a new aesthetic, proper but common to both works. In Part II, we will show that metaphorzation makes possible the formation of a self-referential world in the interior of the two works, and the three categories of signs inside a fiction - the Signifier, the Signified and the Referent - will have the opportunity to draw their source only in the interior of the novel. We are going to investigate into the fantastic that lies under the appearance of realism in the narration of the two stories of “Marcel” and “Jia Jade magique.” The metaphorization is not only an important part of our theory, it helps to discuss on the very essence of the literature in this present study. By converging these two novels by their similarity, we wish to make interesting discoveries from a comparative point of view.

The construction of the character and the emergence of fantastic in romantic short stories (Charles Nodier, Joseph von Eichendorff)

Vest, Jocelyn 10 November 2017 (has links)
At the beginning of the 19th century, the instability of the world lead to a crisis of representation and to the development of what Todorv called the fantastic genre. Unlike Hoffmann's grotesque or discordant visions, Charles Nodier's and Joseph von Eichendorff's stories are characterised by a dreamlike fantastic that is close to the supernatural. This kind of fantastic is connected with the intimate life of the subject and reveals their hidden desires. Contrary to traditional criticism, it will not be analysed through the prism of the event, but through the prism of the characters and their relations. By analysing romantic short stories, we aim to contribute to a general fantastic poetry and to shed a new light on the relations between French and German romanticisms. The first part of the study brings out the presence of typical roles and recurrent modalities of character construction: their names, their physical and psychological traits, their idiosyncraties. The fantastic story focuses on the relationship between a fantastic figure and a subject. Two stereotypes evolve around the latter: a character that defends a supernatural interpretation of the facts and a character that questions their reality. The fantastic effect not only results from ontological characteristics, but also from the interactions between the characters and between the various diegetic levels. The study of these interactions reveals a form of manipulation which serves an anthropological and esthetic aim. This is how, it reveals similarities but also differences between French and German romanticisms concerning the relation between literature and religion or the consideration of dreams or madness.

Milan Kundera a intertextualita / Milan Kundera and intertextuality

Grušová, Mariana January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis Milan Kundera and Intertextuality deals with aspects of relations between the texts in his novels. The first part outlines the intertextuality, theory of the novel and the approaches of some literary theorists towards this issue. The second half of the thesis analyzes the intertextuality in Kundera's works in various forms, mainly based on the themes of dreams and physicality. The greatest emphasis is placed on examining the legacy of Kafka in the context of Kundera's works, particularly in the novels The Joke and The Book of Laughter and Forgetting. Zákon DREAM Act: Finální řešení? / American DREAM Act: Final Solution?

Toloch, Jan January 2015 (has links)
This thesis describes DREAM Act, a legislative proposal discussed in the US Congress between 2001 and 2011. The Act proposes a pathway to legal citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants. The thesis aims to find whether the children of illegal immigrants should be held accountable and face deportations, even though they were not responsible for entering the U.S. illegally? It also discusses whether implementation of the DREAM Act is a convenient solution of governmental reform of the broken immigration system. The first chapter describes the DREAM Act in greater detail and compares it to the presidential executive order DAPA, a similar program to DREAM Act providing deferred action on deportation for these children. The second chapter focuses on impact of immigrants, their legal consciousness and tells stories of undocumented children who crossed the U.S. border and describes their lives in the U.S. The third chapter's focus is on impact on the U.S. society, mainly discusses the economic potential of the DREAM Act implementation. Last chapter provides an analysis of DREAM Act in the State of New York and activities of undocumented students fighting for its enactment. The thesis concludes that the children should not be punished for decisions of their parents as they bring many benefits for...

Gambling mythologized : A multimethod qualitative study of U.S. sports betting advertising narratives

Janson, Stig January 2023 (has links)
Online sports betting is an industry that has seen a huge surge in popularity in the US since 2018, and the companies behind this surge have enjoyed exponential increases in profits. Accompanying the increased interest in and profits of online sports gambling is a large spike in advertisements created by companies that offer online sports betting services. Although gambling is an activity that is recognized as highly addictive and potentially destructive for certain individuals, the companies that offer sports gambling services in the US face little to no government regulation in how they advertise their services. This study aimed to investigate the advertising narratives deployed by the four most popular online sports betting companies in the US (FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars Sportsbook, and BetMGM) in terms of their frequency, using the precision afforded by the method of qualitative content analysis. Additionally, this study deployed semiotic analysis with the constructionist approach to representation and the concept of myth to examine how the most frequently used narratives in online sports betting advertisements draw on broader systems of meaning in order to persuade audiences. This study found that FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars Sportsbook, and BetMGM most frequently used narratives of online betting and celebrity feature in their advertisements. Using semiotic analysis, this study found that the narratives of online betting and celebrity feature often translated to mythologized and often unrealistic depictions of sports betting which represented it as an activity that allowed sports bettors to align themselves on the same hierarchical level as professional athletes and Hollywood celebrities, while largely ignoring the risks that are inherently attached to gambling. The findings of this study stand as an exploratory accounting and examination of the currently unregulated advertising practices of the largest sports gambling companies in the US.
