Loubove, Nathanael 21 December 2012 (has links)
The fairy, a hybrid creature sprung from the depths of time, from greco-roman mythology and the pagan divinities of the Middle Ages, takes center stage in the artistic creation of nineteenth-century authors such as Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly (1808-1889). Indeed, Barbey d’Aurevilly depicts unusual and powerful feminine characters, which seem, because of their enigmatic characteristics, to be related to the medieval fairy, herself a sister of the roman Parcae and greek Moirae. In L'Ensorcelée (1854), as in Un Prêtre marié (1864) and in Une Vieille Maîtresse (1851), among numerous other examples, the erotic nature of fairy-like beings combines with a prophetic and divinatory essence. This study thus addresses these two salient dimensions of the fairy in Barbey’s novels, eroticism and divination. The first section on “Depicting the fairy” establishes a typology based on the matricial figures of the fairy godmother and fairy mistress. Subsequently, the section titled « The universe of the fairy » focuses on space, or the sulfurous universe through which this enigmatic character moves. This analysis of the poetics of space attempts to elucidate Barbey’s orchestrated illusion of the supernatural and the marvelous. The writer blurs the spatio-temporal narrative frame of his novels by means of polyphony, introducing multiple points of view and narrative situations. The last section, « The symbolism of the fairy », points out the novelistic ends to which the avatars of this figure have been put, both in the aurevillian imaginary universe and more generally nineteenth-century literature. Our perspective endeavors to take into account both the wealth of aurevillian narrative technique and thematic depth of his work.

A better DREAM? / A better DREAM? : Evaluation and development of a method for the analysis of road traffic accidents

Furberg, Bibbi January 2004 (has links)

Fluidity and Solidity in Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping

Lindqvist, Linda January 2006 (has links)
<p>C-paper Abstract</p><p>Title: Fluidity and Solidity in Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping</p><p>Author: Linda Lindqvist</p><p>The purpose of this essay is to show that fluidity and solidity constitute a central tension on all levels in Housekeeping, and how this tension leads to a choice of either a fluid or a solid lifestyle and view of the world. I focus on fluidity and solidity in gender roles, in memories, in dreams, in nature, and in different perceptions of reality. By taking a closer look at Ruth’s first-person narration (seeing fluidity as not resisting deformation, while solidity resists deformation), we find that the characters in Housekeeping have fluid and solid traits, but that there is no reality that allows mixed manifestations of these. This results in repression of either fluidity or solidity, which creates tension and feelings of loss. Ruth chooses a fluid lifestyle, thus her memories and dreams become mixed with her present, and this also leads her to become a transient, outside gender roles and traditional small town society. Transience in this novel questions all distinctions conventionally made between dream and reality; male and female. In conclusion, this essay highlights how tension between fluidity and solidity is generated on all levels in Housekeeping, and how this leads to either fluid or solid lifestyles since the characters follow a cultural code that dictates a choice between them.</p>

How to Get from Here to There: Poetic Connections in Tracy Letts's "Man from Nebraska," "August: Osage County," and "Superior Donuts."

Kochman, Deborah Ann 01 January 2011 (has links)
In this thesis, Kochman examines the textual references to poetry in contemporary playwright Tracy Letts's "Man from Nebraska," "August: Osage County," and "Superior Donuts" and explores how specific references function as a "poetic exchange" between the protagonists and the respective agents of change or moral touchstones in each play and how these "poetic exchanges" suggest a diminishment or elevation of the intrinsic value of art -- specifically, poetry -- as a force for personal and cultural renewal. While Letts's writing is hardly "poetic" and his structure closer to "narrative," he focuses on "the repressed" - both emotionally and socially --and the redeeming qualities of poetry. Kochman argues that Letts's dramatic works do not merely challenge the gaps, ruptures, and contradictions in the "master narratives" of Western culture, but also suggest an alternative to the traditional American "narrative" focused on the individual by advocating a "poetic perspective" centered on the community. This perspective urges a shift from a rigid, linear, individual-goal oriented principle (as depicted in "August: Osage County" toward a principle of flexibility, unity, and synthesis (as advocated in "Man from Nebraska" and "Superior Donuts").

Užmirštų sapnų šešėliai / The Shadows of Forgotten Dreams

Sinicienė, Marta 13 January 2007 (has links)
Dreams are one of the most secret processes of human’s psychology which formation device has not been finally clarified yet. Scientists from all over the world, successfully working on this project, the results of their researches and works adduce as different hypothesis, because it is really difficult to formulate thesis that could be tested using laboratories because of the research specifics of the psychophysical proceeding of a dream. It is usual that a new theory is often denied by some examples which can not be proved according to the theory. Realized and unrealized proceedings reflect in dreams which in their content are connected with phenomenon from the outer world, just as psychophysical proceedings of human organism or demands. The content of dreams is mostly influenced by past experience and information lying in subliminal mind. However, such an explanation does not overwhelm a big part of dreams which are interesting and secret. In the research paper there was analyzed the influence of dreams on the dreamer, what sort of mood he has in the morning. It is possible that many days or weeks he is persecuted by a black shadow of a woeful dream, which is difficult to remember. It is possible that he feels tired and prostrate or conversely: he feels assured, negotiating all the barriers on his way. Colour and its symbolic meaning also have a big role in a dream. Features that influence perception of colours are: living experience, position and gradation scale. They are... [to full text]

Beaudry, Andréanne 03 1900 (has links)
Abstract: This memoir consists in a study of dream narratives made by two authors who belonged to the surrealist movement in their youth : Michel Leiris and Raymond Queneau. For one, we will describe the dream poetics by Leiris and Queneau, with different analyses on narrative styles and textual linguistics. Secondly, we will determine how much the surrealism influenced each author in his conception of the dream. The first chapter presents the surrealist conception of the dream, particularly with André Breton, as detailed in the first Manifeste du Surréalisme and in Les Vases Communicants. This synthesis is followed by the analysis of some dream narratives by Breton from Clair de Terre and from La Révolution Surréaliste. The second and third chapters are devoted to Leiris and Queneau’s writing of dreams. We will first study their dream narratives as they were part of the surrealist movement (1924-1929). These texts are found in their personal journals and in the publication La Révolution Surréaliste. After, we go through and compare some texts written after the surrealist period that contain dream narratives or use the dream as a narrative structure. With these analyses, this memoir tries to demonstrate the contribution of the dreams and the elaboration of the poetics styles of Leiris and Queneau. Key words : dream narrative, Michel Leiris, Raymond Queneau, surrealism, french litterature.

Football Wishes and Fashion Fair Dreams: Class and the Problem of Upward Mobility in Contemporary U.S. Literature and Culture

Appel, Sara Elizabeth January 2012 (has links)
<p>Through an analysis of contemporary films, novels, comics, and other popular texts, my dissertation argues that upward class mobility, as the progress narrative through which the American Dream has solidified itself in literary and cultural convention, is based on a false logic of "self-made" individualism. The texts I examine tell a new kind of mobility story: one that openly acknowledges the working-class community interdependence underpinning individuals' ability to rise to their accomplishments. My work spotlights distinctly un-rich communities invested in the welfare of their most vulnerable citizens. It also features goal-oriented individuals who recognize the personal impact of this investment as well as the dignity of poor and working-class people from "heartland" Texas to Lower East Side Manhattan. American-exceptionalist stories no longer ring true with popular audiences faced with diminishing access to economic resources and truly democratic political representation. The growing wealth gap between the corporate elite and everyone else has resulted in a healthy mass skepticism toward simplistic narratives of hard work guaranteeing the comforts of a middle-clas life. The archive I have identified displays a fundamental commitment to the social contract that is perhaps the greatest of U.S. working-class values, offering a hopeful vision of collective accountability to readers and viewers struggling to avoid immobilizing debt, foreclosure, and the unemployment line.</p> / Dissertation
